Desktop creating two copies of files when moving items to desktop..

Q: Desktop creating two copies of files when moving items to desktop..

I've searched and I get not even one link on this. I have a clean install of Windows 7 plus Firefox and Dell Drivers.. My problem is it creates a ghost like file that really isn't there because if I delete one, the other becomes inaccessible and I have to manually refresh using F5. Also, when I restart my computer it also is creating duplicates of files and shortcuts. Even when I install software it creates two short cuts.. I can deal with having to manually refresh, but I cannot deal with it creating duplicates of everything.
Here is an image that will further confuse you.

Preferred Solution: Desktop creating two copies of files when moving items to desktop..

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I can't see anything other than a folder shortcut in your snip? But, with your problem, have you by chance "taken ownership" of any system folders - particularly the "Documents and Settings" folder. This action can often produce the effects you are experiencing.

All of a sudden, I can't move or copy files or folders to other folders on the computer. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro. When I try to move something, I get a popup that says that I can't copy or move from this zone due to security settings. I can't find where I can change this. Can anyone direct me to the solution?
I just noticed that I can move things on the C: drive into and out of folders. The problem appears to be related to moving things around on the desktop. If I try to move a file into a folder on the desktop, I get the cannot move into the zone due to security settings.
This did happen once before but then it went away.

Hi there,

I have vista home premium on a vaio vgn-nr38e, pentium dual CPU T2390 @ 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset family.

Laptop has been a bit funny since the HD was replaced a couple of weeks ago. The guy who replaced it added office 03 & reinstalled some other applications. The trouble all started this morning when MS office 2003 kept trying to configure, couldn't download anything & trying to start any programme just triggered the configuration box & announcement of sku011 missing file error. Tried system restore, etc. nothing worked. Eventually managed to get around that by updating to the office 07 from disk that the laptop came with.

Nearly all my desktop items won't work now although I can download files, despite specifying the location the file should be saved in, it isn't there when I look, hence why I can't give a hijack this log. But they won't uninstall due to missing components so I can reinstall either.

Opera won't start, it says there is a module 9 error but I've checked the fix Opere give & the .lng file name is spot on.

When I try to repair on uninstall:

-With ad-aware I get an "ad-aware installation package has stopped working" notice but the words are not aligned properly.

-With AVG I get:

Installer initialization failed due to following error:

I think I got it covered. Downloaded the installations on another computer & transfered them to disc then installed them on the laptop from there. Hi, I'm posting this to both the General Security and Windows XP forums because I think an answer from either forum is possible (if this is not allowed, I will delete one thread).

It's a bit of a long story, but bear with me:
I have a USB drive that I do not use anymore. Back when I did, though, at some point it developed a kink where I would not be able to save or move new files to the drive even though it had plenty of free space. I would have to delete something to make room, but the number of things I had to delete and their combined size would differ each time, as far as I could tell.

Well, earlier today I needed to use that old drive for something. So I took it out and, completely forgetting about that strange trait it had, backed up all contents in it to my desktop. This is where the problems started. I was unable to save a file to desktop--specifically, a Flash_Disinfector.exe linked from this site. Under Firefox, I would simply get an "unknown error" and afterwards Firefox would not find the link anymore; under IE, I would get an "access denied" error and a message to check whether the disk was full or copy-protected. That second error message is strikingly similar to what I used to get with the USB drive.

I'm wondering if there was a file on the drive that was causing it to lock or somehow limit the available space, and that was transferred to my computer when I backed up the drive? Since then, I have completely removed everything I bac... Read more

and then while doing a seach you can repair the file when its found by telling Recuva to repair it when it recovers it
Now for the USB drive

Go into the Disk Manager thru the start menu by right clicking (My Computer) and select (Manage) then select (Disk Manager) and select the drive ( needs to be connected to the computer ) and select it to be reformated

I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer.

I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.

I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!

So... am I stuck with this?

Thanks fellas.

I purchased a used desktop PC (Acer Aspire M5100) without an installed operating system. What's an easy method of moving the operating system (XP SP2), programs and files to the Acer from a Dell Dimension 2100.

Since some XP files and settings are hardware dependent, I assume that simply moving the "C" drive won't be successful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A:Moving files/programs to new desktop

First you can NOT legally MOVE the OS from the Dell to the Acer as it is tied to the Dell machine. You need to go and BUY a copy to be installed on the new machine. Then you are going to need to INSTALL all of the programs that you own on the new machine.
Then you can copy the data from the old machine to a external device and then copy to the new machine.

Whenever I try to move downloaded files off my desktop (into another folder, for example) then try to open/run them again, I get the error message "User/(user name)/Desktop may have been changed/moved/deleted..." or something like that. For example, I downloaded Minecraft to my desktop the other day, then proceeded to move it into my personal folder, then tried to open it again, but it failed to open. (Not that I WANTED it off my desktop, I just used it for the sake of example.) If I delete said folder off the desktop, I get the error message when I open the personal folder. If I delete the desktop folder from my personal folder, I get the error message when I try to open/run the application. I've never had this desktop folder show up before or have had any problem moving or deleting files, until yesterday. Is there any way I can prevent the desktop folder from showing up in the personal folder, or at least prevent it from being a stubborn prick whenever I want to move something.

I mean, it's not like I need a folder to tell me whats right in front of my face anyway...

I've noticed a few days ago some strange things happening on my dell Inspiron laptop. I have all these files moving by themselves everywhere on my computer and even on my portable drives... "Desktop.ini" and "thumbs.db" are duplicating themselves almost everywhere and several times ; library "music, video, my documents".Also in "my documents" now I get all these shortcuts for "my videos" and "my music" with access denied when clicked on... Some words and One notes documents have been moved around too in videos, music, quite a mess!...
I've ran several scans "Malwarebytes, windows defender, Microsoft essentials and McFee" but none of them could find any type of malware of my laptop.
Does anybody know what the issue is with my computer and how to fix that?

I don't know what it is, but I've been having troubles copying files from my desktop to my media HDD.

I've been getting errors such as the one I attached.

Also transfers are SUPER slow - I have 8g of ram, it should not take 10-20 minutes to move a few hundred MB's over to my media HDD.

What can I look into why this is so slow & even giving me error problems period?

A:Having trouble moving/copying files from desktop to HDD lately.

The Media HDD is an external USB drive? Try running chkdsk /r against it, see if there are file system problems. If not perhaps there is a hardware problem.

Hello Everybody,

I stupidly saved important folders to desktop; When I click properties says location is c\users\user\desktop which to me is where the folder and files are on the HD.

I have tried using a practise folder to get it from desktop to My Docs with properties showing as a Document, so I can delete from the desktop.
When I create folder on desktop and "send to" My Docs it appears in my doc but when I delete from desktop it deletes both.
I looked at a article about the old way drag and drop as XP did. Found the move to under edit but still can't do it.
there must be a way!
I do not use libraries as they confuse me as to where the file is stored on HD and I only have important docs twice a year, which is also the problem, as I don't repeat what I've learnt enough.

I've been storing some on my old XP drive [Has all my old records on] as I can work that, but I thought I could use the Win 7. Well I'm pathetic , I can't even move a document and know its safe on HD.

I do not use the libraries as sounds simple but I never believe I won't accidently delete.>

Any help will be appreciated.

I am writing on behalf of my friend b/c I already have an account here. A couple of days ago she was on her laptop when numerous pop ups started filling up her screen, the kind that makes one think "virus". The pop ups looked like system messages about some critical error with some hardware component, she can't remember. So I suggested that she go into Safe Mode and run her Avast and SuperAntiSpyware scanners to see what they pick up. Avast found one infected file, a music file that she deleted afterwards, and SAS found 34 items, mostly cookies and 4 trojans. She deleted/quarantined those afterwards too. Oddly, no log file was created by SAS after that scan like it usually does so I can't list the items they found. Also, SAS always fails when updating definitions now.
When she booted up normally, her computer was in a depressing state after the attack. The desktop was empty and unresponsive, i.e., you couldn't right-click, the Recycle Bin was gone. I tried to add icons back on but nothing appears. You can change the wallpaper and that's it. The start menu was bare too, everything had to be manually restored like the links to Control Panel, Run, etc., and all the shortcuts in the All Programs menu. However, I can't restore the Accessories folder with all it's system tools (System Restore!!!) and stuff. The Task Manager was disabled but I fixed that after looking for a solution online. Win XP Pro SP2
IE 7

I don't know when the problem began, but I suspect it began when I upgraded [ ?? ] to IE 7.

First noticed 07 April when I created a new user account [ administrator group ].

Problem occurs with all users.

System Restore is not an option because I have made many changes since adding IE 7.

I also use FF. I do not want this to become an IE vs FF thread.

I tried these:
Go into the registry and look for the registry key...

I'll bet yours looks as mine did and has...

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,-7.

What it should be is...

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,-32528

I was browsing through the registry and I found the same key as you ending -702. This is the wrong key, if you go one level lower you will find the key ending on -7. When you change this one it does work.

Neither of which worked.

That which restored the IE desktop icon:
Tip #100 at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm
The Display properties, customize destop, "desktop items", "general" tab does NOT allow for the selection / deselection of IE. See screen shot.

Seems this is a common problem that hasn't been solved. My laptop HP Pavilion DV7 running Windows 7 worked fine for many years. Took it on a train trip and when back home suddenly had 4 copies of the desktop image. Other than this it works fine. Upgraded driver, rolled back driver. Had some success by re-starting after the problem occurred. My external monitor shows the same images.

One time I flipped it over while it was running, looking at the bottom, and the problem went away. I'm wondering if there is a physical problem with a card or something. The Amtrack train is a bone crusher at times and is a constant pounding. Also wondering if this could be heat related.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the

When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.

We basically only need to loop through all files in the DNA-RAW folder, assuming that DNA-AFTER holds the same file names?
Is it all files or only jpg?
And the files should be moved, not copied.

Hi there,

So I make backups every now and then of my laptops and desktops. I have a desktop PC at the moment which is an HP SFF (don't have exact model on me - let me know if required).

I now have a newer HP SFF desktop with a failed hard drive that I picked up for free (i7 etc.) that I'm wanting to use as it's got a lot more grunt.

I make my backups using Macrium Reflect. I've successfully restored backup images onto hard drives and used them in the same PC they came from - but never to go to a new PC.

First off I tried just straight swapping the hard drive into the new PC to see if it'd boot, pickup hardware changes and install drivers (or manually if required). However, the desktop would just show the Windows screen then the HP screen in a continuous loop.

I created a WinPE bootable USB using Macrium Reflect and successfully booted the NEW desktop using it. I then restored the image onto a different hard drive using settings that I thought would prompt for additional driver downloads etc. - however it did the same thing as above.

Is anyone able to assist as to what exactly needs to be done to restore the image from my existing HP desktop onto a newer faster HP desktop and have it automatically pick up hardware changes and either download drivers automatically or let me manually do it?

I had followed a couple of tutorials (however brief) I found online to no avail.

Any help much appreciated :) Can provide exact PC models if required when home tonight.

Hi after I restarted my computer I noticed desktop.in files, is this normal, and can I delete them?

A:Strange files called desktop.ini on desktop

It's normal, and yes you can delete them, and in earlier versions of Windows they used to stay gone.

But in my case at least, they won't in 8.1. They keep reappearing on restarting.

So what I did was this: Right-click on the desktop and select 'Large Icons'. Then drag the unwanted icons until
they are out of sight off the left of the screen. Reset icon size to 'Small Icons' and you'll never see them again.

Hey guys on Windows 7 Ultimate is it possible to add items to the desktop, but in a specific place, so even though I right click and do>sort>by name that item will not move?

A:Add items to desktop

Hi CriticalError and welcome to the Forum. You might want to try a free download called Fences. Allows you to group icons into your own logical groups and manage them independantly.

Hi all

I'd be grateful for any suggestions or advice on the follwing problem.

Windows 2000 Professional
Dell Optiplex desktop pc.

I provide second line support to a remote site up in Scotland.
There is one user who has a strange problem on her pc.

I need to run a setup.exe file on her pc. If I double click it, nothing happens.
This happens for other icons too. However some work fine such as "My Computer" and "My Documents".

1. Logged on as myself, same problem.
2. Copied the file else where to the pc and tried from there.

Other than that I'm a bit stumped. I'd love to reload the pc but because of the location its difficult to arrange.

Any ideas?

Operating System: Windows XP

Desktop icons all missing, the right-click option is not working. Can not change the background appearance. The taskbar is working.

I have Kaspersky Internet Protection and performed a scan. It detected and quarantined 1 trojan that is a legal software that can be used by criminals for damaging your computer or personal data PDM Trojan. Generic.

Ran a Malwarebytes and found 2 low urgency trojans. Disinfected both, but forgot to log what they were. After running this, I got some of my desktop items back and right-click is working and changing the background is possible.

When I click the Start tab and select the all programs, most of the programs are not there and looks to be deleted from the list.

Should I run a Hijackthis log here?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A:How to lock desktop items

Have you tried right clicking on your desktop, going to the desktop tab and clicking "Customize Desktop" then go to the "Web" tab (in the new window) and check the box that says, "Lock Desktop Items"

Hi all, I am trying to figure out how to add changing content to my background. I decided to use the Web option in the customize desktop area of the display settings. I made two test attempts trying different things out to see if it would do what I wanted. I had no trouble and so I went ahead and made my image. Now when I went to add the actual image in it let me, but wouldn't save the changes after I logged off. It works fine while I am still logged in, but as soon as I log off my changes are gone. So I thought that maybe there was a limit on how many items I could have in the list at any given time. I had no need for my test objects, so I deleted them from the display control panel. Now for the surprise - Those changes don't save either. After I log off the test objects are restored. I now thought that maybe it was some kind of safety feature so you don't remove it by mistake. I went through and found where the registry keys for it were located and deleted all of them. This only effected my current session - After I logged off, the test ones are put back and my actual one is removed, from both the control panel and the registry.

So my question is how can I remove the test ones (Not that big of a deal if they can't be removed) and add my new one in (This is the big issue)

I copied all my spec info into this post so someone might be able to help me, and i included as much snips as i thought possible, okay here goes.

Some of my Desktop items have been overlay with a generic icon, Yes I have been all over this site and tried everything possible to resolve it, yes i have googled it and tried everything there as well, resetting the iconcache, resizing the icons, changing resolutions, everything, changing the icons back to default, nothing.

First here is a snip of my desktop
notice that computer is okay, I added the network, control panel and my folder, to show that they are okay as well
also my quick launch has nothing but generic icons

My start menu is the same, its about 50% generic

When i try to change the icon back manually through the properties I get this

the only one that does not give me this problem is impulse, but it still has the generic icon overlaying it. Rosetta stone gives me the same problem but still has its normal icon underneath the generic ones

the icons will change, but the overlay is still there

this happened when i installed an intel temerature moniter, i uninstalled the program, still there, did a system restore, no help.

Please try and help me on this issue, thank you.

A:Certain Desktop items changed

Hello Methos, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It looks as if the shortcut arrow as been removed or changed using the incorrect XP method by mistake.

Use the progam in this tutorial to add the shortcut arrow back, then you can use it again to remove or change the shortcut arrow if you like.

Your description of the issue is vague. Please give a detailed description of the issue you are having. What did you do before the issue started, have you installed anything before the issue started. If so what? Any updates installed? Have you tried a System Restore? What shortcut are you trying to create?

What Service Pack do you have for Windows XP? Also what is the make and model of your machine?
