Q: Signed in to Mail app - now account is my Windows Email account


Upgraded from Windows 7 to Win 10 and was loving it (was). Saw there was a mail app and thought that would be pretty handy. Signed in and since then, I have to log in to my PC as my email address and password.

I don't want that.

How do I revert my existing user back to a non-Windows live user, with a normal, local account and password?

I am happy to not use the Mail app if that's what it takes, but my concern is that the profile I have now has all my icons and docs and stuff and I don't want to go through the hassle of copying over the profile.

There must be a way to undo this change, but I can't find it.

Opereting system - Windows 7 Home Premium.

I use windows live mail version 9.

The account on there at the moment is an Office 365 account for btconnect.com,

I wish to set up two other email accounts which must not be Office 365 accounts but still using btconnect settings.

Can you provide full setup details including server details and details of port settings.

I'm trying to delete an old university account that was still signed in before, however that now they allegedly flushed the old accounts, then it was signed out, and my user name cannot be recognized.
Now I am left with an account that "needs attention" when opening windows mail.  The account cannot be removed normally with account setting while connected to the internet because when I clicked the account in account list inside settings
charm menu it promptly redirect me to the login page, where I do not have any access to my account anymore.
The trick of disconnecting the internet (or using the airplane mode) also not successful because if  keep the  app open, it only show me that the app cannot connect to the service. In the other hand, if I close the mail app, then it shows that
Windows Mail show that I need to connect to the intenet to use  the application.
Is there any solution to such problem?
Or is it possible to reset the Windows Mail application to a clean state (since I tried to uninstall and when I re-install it from windows store, the accounts that were there pops up again)?

i have used mail app in win8.1 for a while and it works, but someday it stops working, tried all methods but no result
i tried everything, windows diagnosis tool, uninstalling and installing mail app, clean boot,  update mail app, disabling antivirus and firewall (avast), double check password and connection
should i change imap and smtp servers and ports? anything changed since 3 weeks ago?

Regarding to current information, I would like first confirm that if there is any change including software or Windows updates installed before this issue.

To make sure the email account can still work fine, please contact the provider support to know if the account is hacked or blocked for some reason. Try to change the password to see what's going on.

Considering if your current user profile was corrupted, please test the issue by creating a new user account and configure the mail app after login with this account.
Since this issue can also be caused by corrupted system files or virus, please perform a system restore back to the point before this issue and see if the app can work fine now.

Post back the event log under Event Viewer>Applications and Services Logs>Microsoft>Windows>apps for our research.Kate Li

I have just transferred from a Windows XP PC using Outlook Express 6 to Vista PC with Windows Mail. I successfully migrated one email account and it works fine. On a second account I get the windows security box asking for username and password and even when I enter them correctly I get the box again. When I cancel I get the following error message:

Account: 'Estradia general', Server: '', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR unknown user name or bad password', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91.

However the username and password are correct, and the account does send and receive emails OK. The account is located with the same ISP as the fully functioning account. I have checked that all the settings etc for the caccount are correct, and have tried manually inputting them with same effect.

Any ideas for a solution?

I held out and downloaded Windows 10 on the last day it was going to be free. I?ve been having some email issues ever since. Some have been solved; one has been a toothache.

Although Microsoft wants to wean people off of Windows Live Mail in favor of the built in mail interface in Windows 10, I want to keep using WLM.

I need two email accounts set up on WLM. One I have set, a IMAP account (a Time Warner Roadrunner account) which is working properly and the other an outlook.com email account which isn?t. (All the settings on the two accounts are IDENTICAL with the exception of the server names)

The OUTLOOK account is also set a IMAP and the setting are correct as I can send and receive emails?both properly going through the proper server and being able to be read in my hand held device and on the outlook.com web site.

The problem is I can?t get folders to populate in WLM on that account, so I can?t see (read) incoming mail from there, nor do I have a SENT folder to verify that my emai ?went.?

The step which I can not get to happen in to ?DOWNLOAD FOLDERS?, i.e. the ?Inbox?, ?Drafts?, ?Sent Items?, ?Junk E-mail?, and ?Deleted Items? folders.

I am new here and just purchased a laptop with Windows 7 on it and Windows Live Mail already installed.
My previous laptop (still up and running, but mainly just to check emails now) had Outlook Express and was set up many years ago when it was new.
Do I need to completely close down or delete the Outlook Express before I open up a new account in Windows Live Mail with the same email address?
I've tried opening up and putting server details, username/password into Windows Live Mail - and it's accepted it.
However when I go to send/receive mail - it keeps asking me to log in and give my password, and that it's incorrect - when I know it is actually correct?

Am I doing something wrong here? Or how can I open up my emails on my new laptop via Windows Live Mail?

I have Microsoft Security Essentials running as my antivirus protection.

I am hopeful I am doing something very silly and someone might be able to help me with this, as I'm not very computer minded - simple instructions please if anyone has suggestions.

Since you're using Windows 7 for WLM and OE for XP they can't simultaneously be on the same PC. However both programs can be set up on their respective PCs at the same time; just keep in mind that if you download your mail on one PC you won't see it on the other afterwards unless you choose the option to "keep mail on server".

If OE is working, look carefully at every tab of Account Properties and set up WLM the same way. WLM is the replacement for OE for Windows 7 and will work if set up the same.

My existing hotmail email account just switched to outlook express. Since then - I've switched to "windows live mail" and my 2 existing existing email addresses have been sucessfully transferred over to "live mail" and both work.
But now trying to ADD more email addresses in my"live mail account" and all attempts have failed.
Tryed to manually config server settings - and that failed. Commom advice is to "contact your email provider" for server settings...... Well who is provider? hotmail?? outlook express?? windowss live mail?? What gives?? Anyone know where iam going wrong?

Every so often - not each time I open Windows Live Mail but daily or every other day there is no inbox. Also my (only) email account has disappeared. When I make the account again the inbox reappears (including all the mail that I had already deleted).

I use Windows 7 64 bit.

If you're using IMAP it can happen when there's a communication issue with your eMail provider.

Have you tried manually rebuilding the account with a POP/SMTP configuration and seeing if the problem happens then?

I have an email account that has been deleted at the server. I want to keep all the emails both in and out that have accumulated over the past year or so preferably where they are now without exporting elsewhere. At the moment everytime I open Windows Live mail it tries to connect to this email account and I need to cancel the "Confirm password" to bypass the connection. How can I cancel the connection attempt?

Mitchell mate I have gone over to Thunderbird - it can be configured just like WLM (GUI) and as long as you are keeping your accounts - mine for example are hotmail and the local provider bigpond - TB will import all the mails I used to have in WLM.

I may not be understanding exactly what you want but seeing WLM is being made redundant and I am NOT a fan of Outlook I am now with TB I thought I would try it and it works really very well.

Since I've received the anniversary update from Windows 10 (version 1607), regularly when starting up my computer, this message appears on the monitor: There can not be signed in to your account.

Know that I'm the only user of these computer, the administrator, without a password.

How can I solve this issue?

I can't seem to get the metro email app to remember the account that I want to send email from on default. I have a Gmail account and two Exchange accounts. Seems like any time another app or web site wants to send an email there is no logic as to what account it sends from.

When I create a corporate email account in the Mail app I see the message:
"To sync [email protected] , you'll need to change this PC's settings to match the mail server's security policy. See how."
When I click 'See how' the following message comes up:
Does anyone know exactly what these security settings are and is there a list of steps to undo them in case this email account is removed later on? When I go into the mail tile, it tell me to choose you email provider to add my account. Comcast is not an available option so I go to the "Other" account. When I type in my account information and press connect, it says "adding your account" but then it just sits there and acts like its searching for the account but does not do anything after that. I was wonder if this is a problem with my mail tile or doesn't Microsoft acknowledge Comcast as an email provider.

My virus software expired two days before this. Not sure it would make any difference though because I've now scanned with Norton 2010, and with Panda, and neither has found anything amiss.

I discovered it when I got an "undeliverable" email notification from the Mail Delivery Subsystem. I use Windows Mail, but have an AOL account that I never use online. The "sent" folder in Windows mail had nothing, but I did find the bogus email in the "sent" folder of the AOL web mail. Also, the recipients to whom it was sent were all from the AOL contacts online, not from my Windows contacts. Luckily, those contacts were ancient and I think only one was still valid.

Interestingly, one of those contacts was one of my own email addresses which is valid and working, but that email was also returned as undeliverable so the actual email never reached me. I only got the delivery failure notification.

The bogus email contained only a link. That link is as follows: www.ptr1.myhealth-c.com. I have not clicked it for fear of what else might lurk there.

I suspect the link is to an online pharmacy, and it's my fault. I have never had a virus, trojan, etc. in nearly 20 years online, but I always get spam with links to online pharmacies, and out of curiosity, I decided to click one yesterday maybe 5 to 8 hours before I discovered the bogus email (pretty stupid to do when my virus software had just lapsed). It used to be not connected to any email account but when it updated to 8.1 I chose to get an email address for it, so now as a result, the password has to be 8 characters long and I have to use a PIN number , but that's still 4 characters, and I usually use one character password.

I was living with a relative who had a comcast account. She allowed me to put my email address on that account. Relative moved away, closed the comcast account. I opened up a new comcast account and wanted to transfer my email address from the first account to my new account. How do I do this?

I installed Windows 8 on Christmas Day and I skipped the email account setup parts. I never used any APPS yet, in fact I removed everything app-related from my start screen including notifications, etc.

I have used the Classic Shell so far, but today I thought I'd set up the Live email account login.

While I was setting up the app account I kept getting emails from the live account manager to confirm what I was doing and I confirmed each one.

The last thing it asked to 'Trust this PC'. I did so and my machine name appeared on my Microsoft account profile page under "Trusted PC".

But when I restarted I could no longer log in with my local account or the new Live email account.

I logged in as Administrator and saw that my local account name was changed from my username to <[email protected]>, my live account ID. It would not allow Administrator to change the account name or my password.

I tried to log in with the email and Live password, but it said I could not log in with his PC and that I need to resolve the issue with the live account on-line.

I had a password reset disk (USB drive) and I used it. It started up the reset wizard and I put back my old password. It finished with no error but I still could not log in.

Finally, I logged in as Administrator and restored my Acronis system image from yesterday. Then everything was back to normal.

I have no idea what happened, I was very careful doing each of these steps.

I have several Local and Live accounts on my system for testing, and I do not have Live Essentials installed
All of my accounts work perfectly. And across PC's, as I have a desktop also setup with a couple of different and same accounts.

It is possible that Chrome caused an issue. and it is possible you need Live Essentials to use chrome properly. I don't know as I forbid Chrome being installed on any of my PC's.

I've been using Windows 10 for weeks. Until today, it started up just fine by displaying my name and no email address. This is exactly how I want it to be.

Today when Win 10 would not recognize a printer, in order to download an "app" to help with this, I was required to provide a Microsoft email account, which I did (an old Hotmail account I rarely use). Now when I restart or wake up the computer, that old Hotmail account appears as "Administrator". However, I do NOT want that old Hotmail email address associated with this computer.

How can I remove it and get back to logging in with NO associated email address?

NOTE: I do not want to delete the old Hotmail account; just want to remove it from my Windows 10 "Account" menu (My name + Hotmail address + "Administrator").

In case it's required to associate Win 10 with an email address, I use Windows Live Essentials with a company email address. I tried adding it via the "Other Account" option, but Win 10 said it did not recognize the email address I entered, sigh.

I saw threads with a similar question but not quite the same.

While I have another post on this issue already, I considered it advisable to make another post due to some significant new information that should come to the attention of viewers. I have learned that my access problems with my Yahoo mail account are somehow browser related because I have installed two more browsers and have different results within each for accessing my Yahoo mail account.

With Google's Chrome browser (with MyYahoo home page installed) I have no issues whatsoever..yet, anyhow.

With IE8 (Yahoo optimized version) I can occasionally get access, but then I tend to get lengthy delays in page turning or ability to insert info on page until fully loaded, and/or outright freezes which cause me to have to utilize the task manager to end the process when I get "not responding" reports.

With Firefox (4) I cannot access my mail at all and get "404 Not Found" error messages when I try using access links (interestingly I have the same error message for the advertisement box/section on MyYahoo home page).

I have personally also run scans for malware with Avast, Malwarebytes, Ad Aware, and Mamutu, but found none. I have also made a log file of a scan by Trend Micro's 'Highjack This", but I see no way to copy and forward the scan results for viewing by others (such as this forum).

And finally, I have sent a request to Yahoo for help on this issue, but have not yet received a response.

Just thought I'd record on here some strange behaviour I've just had in the Mail and Calendar apps.

By adding in a Calendar appointment with certain text in the Description/Notes, I was able to stop Calendar and Mail working, with an error message that could mislead.

I tried to enter a Calendar appointment with some details of a travel booking. However it didn't seem to be synch-ing to the web version of my account on Outlook.com. The text in the notes was quite long and it seems to be that text which may have been the issue, either the length or something in the content.

Worse than that, if I tried to synch Mail, it just says '<my email address> is unavailable'

I also tried to enter the same appointment online using Outlook.com and it gave me an error:
"Server Validation Error
Calendar wasn't able to complete this request."

Again it seemed to be the text in the appointment that it didn't like.

It does seem that this rogue Calendar appointment was stopping the synch, and also stopping Mail from getting through, with an error that suggested my account was unavailable when it was this one Calendar appointment, not the account which was the problem.

Deleting the Calendar appointment meant that Mail started working again.

Curiously I did eventually succeed, by entering another Calendar appointment on Outlook.com at a different time and gradually pasting in more and more of the notes, bit by bit, and then moving it to the correct time.

I am using a Yahoo mail account which downloads emails to Windows Live Mail on my desktop.

I am being spammed by Online Casino emails, and despite blocking the senders domain in WinLiveMail, it only lasts for a few days and then returns. Also done the same thing with selective blocking in Yahoo Mail account settings for SPAM blocking but same result.

I tried to contact Yahoo Mail tech support to find out if it's possible to turn off my main Yahoo Mail account for a week or two, as it is the one being spammed, but I get no reply. Apart from FAQ does anyone know how to email or live chat Yahoo Mail support?

I can't use the "Unregister" option in the incoming spam mail, or I'll get inundated with commercial emails.

Also tried various options like Mail Washer, etc.

Can anyone think of an option so I don't see these emails, short of closing the account and creating a new one. The thing is, this is my main account I've used in many online registrations.

The weird thing is I've never been on the web site of Online Casino and never use the main email account in emails or online, except for signing in to things like my ISP, Yahoo Mail, etc.

My mum has got a new computer, and it has Vista on it and therefore has Windows Live Mail. She is used to outlook express and I just check my emails from a website rather than a programme like this, so i am not accustom to them. Live Mail will not let her sign in to her account. It says the email or password is incorrect. Both are correct as they will work on the website. I have checked all the property setting and they are correct and even tried setting the incoming settings to private as suggested on the website. I have now noticed it will send emails if i go to start then hover over windows live mail, then select send new message. This will send a message from her email. Yet when Live Mail is opened up it and send and receive pressed it says password/email incorrect.
Any suggestions please.

From about three weeks ago, on only my most heavily used email account (it has around 75,000 emails in it and gets around 200 emails each day), I was only able to download 4 emails at a time. Then it would stop. I would click "Get Mail" and it would download the next 4 emails. I'd click "Get Mail" etc etc until all emails were downloaded.

I tried to find a solution, but couldn't, so I just put up with it (it was really only a pain in the butt first thing in the morning).

Then, this morning - disaster! My main account only downloads one email at a time! It shows "55 of 55 Incoming messages", then next time "55 of 55 incoming messages" etc. A new one must have arrived because now it is showing "56 out of 56" (but I still have 6 hours of emails to download).

Important info:

* Email is hosted by gmail.
* Account is setup as a POP account.
* This issue is not affecting other staff on a mac, using same domain for email. Nor is it affecting any other email accounts I have (about 16 active email accounts, including 2 others hosted by gmail).
* Mail version is 4.3
* OS is 10.6.4
* Hard drive has 83GB available
* Last week I installed an extra 2GB of ram - so it wont be a lack of ram.
* No other email accounts are affected.
* There are 20 unread emails sitting in my Gmail account waiting to be downloaded (I logged in to Google Webmail and saw them).

This is a largely undocumented problem with GMail over pop.

Read this article. Gordon's Tech: Gmail’s undocumented POP3 download limit

It appears that your download limit is lower than that stated (340) but I believe it is the same thing.

I think the only way yo fix this would be to setup an IMAP GMail in Mail.

Are you using normal GMail or google Apps Gmail?

I am using an outlook 2003 for a POP email account.

Then I needed to create another account called [email protected] and I used it on the same outlook 2003 as for [email protected].

I created a folder called : “COLLECTORS” within inbox and I created a filter to redirect emails to the admin from the inbox to COLLECTORS folder.
Now When I received new emails through [email protected], I would receive an New Mail Desktop Alert notification from the system try .

I've never created an autoreply message before but I was pretty sure there was some way to do it so I tracked that down.
The only problem is that I only want to create this autoreply for a email account. which is not the default email account. In the template file I even specified to send the message using the account the email comes in on, but it replies using the default mail account rather than the one I want it to.

My Rule for this is:

1. Check mail on arrival from this altername account
2. Reply using template C:\Documents and Settings\user\Applications\Templates\OutOfOffice.oft
3. stop rule processing

In reality part 2 of this rule should be:
Reply using template C:\Documents and Settings\user\Applications\Templates\OutOfOffice.oft and send via altername account

Is there any way to set the reply to use the non-default account rather than the default one?

If not, can anyone suggest an application which will do this?

I created a new account in windows 8.1 pro . It appears that as soon as i log in , it loads for a sec , then immediatly i see , signing out message , and i am returned to login screen.

I have tried making a Microsoft and a local account . Doesnt help. I've also tried sfc scan . I think it is a problem with my user accounts . I'm sure they were corrupt , but i dont know how to heal it . I cant reinstall windows .
A dude in microsoft windows forums had a problem exactly as mine . He said that it turned out he had corrupt files . He says he needed to copy the folder C:/users/default from another working pc , and paste it in his computer . It worked . But i dont have any other win 8 pc . HELP ?

In Mail, is it impossible to install, email account from other than Microsoft or Google ?

I'm getting rid of an old netscape web based email account and begin a new yahoo account. I would like to forward the mail from my old account to my new account automatically.
Yahoo gives instructions on doing this but says I need a POP server name. Will this type of mail forwarding work with web-based email? If so, how do I find out netscapes POP server name?

There are no such things as Outlook mail accounts (in the context of your question anyway). Your mail account is on a server where Outlook fetches mail from.

The better way to set up mail forwarding is on the server. If you have some sort of a web interface or a shell account, then you may be able to set the forward address yourself. Otherwise, talk to the mail server administrator.

You can set up mail filtering rules in Outlook too, which say that whenever Outlook receives a new message, it will send it so somewhere else. This approach is very bad though, since you would have to have your Outlook running 24/7 to keep the forwarding ability.

I can only guess that the Account.equals() method in Windows' codebase looks like this:

A while back, I realized I no longer needed my Hotmail address, and set up my Microsoft account to use my G-mail address. This simplified things quite a lot for me. This is the account I use to log into Windows 8.
I just decided to try out the much-hated Mail app, and set up my G-mail account there. After some imperfectness, I thought about just removing it and using Chrome G-mail on its own. However, I ran into this:
They seem to falsely think that my G-mail account is the same as my Microsoft account, when in reality there's no reason I shouldn't be able to remove this. (Heck, it wasn't there 10 minutes ago) Any ideas? If this is a real bug, any way to submit it to Microsoft?

Something odd has just happened with my mail.
I previously had both the hotmail account and an MS Exchange work email account loaded onto the Win8 CP mail.
Now the exchange account has disappeared, and there is no longer a button anywhere to allow me to add the account back in.

Anyone have any suggestions?

in your Metro Mail App, open up the charms bar (win key+C) and go to settings or accounts, from there you can add new or delete...
Im not on my Win8 right now to post screenies, but I think u get the point.

Windows 8.1 Mail app push email notification for Outlook account stopped working yesterday (it was working for one year). I haven't changed anything. Note it stopped working
on two different devices at the same time. The only way to get new email messages is manual synchronization by the Sync button now. No error messages in Event log, I also tried to reinstall all three apps, no change. Note that calendar push
notifications still works (on both devices).

I believe it is a server issue because TcpView now reports livecomm.exe process connection to
dub407-m.hotmail.com server on both devices affected while it was something like
snt000-m.hotmail.com (I don't remember the number exactly) before when it had worked. It seems to be my Microsoft account specific issue because notifications on other Microsoft account where Mail, Calendar and People apps are connected to
col403-m.hotmail.com server still works.

message. I've googled this error and found this tutorial on how to fix it but the first step is to back up files and folders from C:\Users\(problem profile).

However, this folder no longer exists on my HDD. If I look at the profile registry key, it's pointing at where the folder should be, but the folder is gone. It's not hidden, I have hidden files viewable, it's just gone.

It was my profile, it was an administrator account. The rest of the family's profiles and files are intact, but mine are gone.

To add insult to injury, I tried a system restore from an automatic point taken at lunchtime today, but the process fails with this error:

Weird problem with client computer ...
Dell 4550 P4 2.53GHz
512 MB ddram pc2700
video is nVidia GeForce4 MX420

Computer is running Windows XP..
It has two Administrator accounts .. no guest acct

When you sign on to the first account, everything is ok....
Sign on to second account ... everything appears ok ..
Go out of second and back into the first accout (2nd acct still signed in)
First account, font is all weird, hard to read, pieces of letters very light or missing and font is real small. - - - Went into settings, nothing has changed.
Went into second account, the same as first account ... font is weird

one more thing.... If you restart, it all goes back to normal

Any ideas on this???
Happens every time.
Seems to function normally in other respects.
Would appreciate any suggestions .... Thanks!!
