Spectre x360 speaker volume too low

Q: Spectre x360 speaker volume too low

I have a new Spectre x360 13-4103dx. Having a little trouble hearingthe sound from Netflix when the laptop is used tented, in bed, so that thespeakers are on the bottom of the tent V, and close to a blanket.Sound volume set to maximum.A little better in normal laptop position, with the front end where thespeakers are located is tilted upward.Sound is much better with laptop on a desk. Best in normal laptop position. Now this may sound a bit dumb, since, of course the blanket will absorbsome of the sound, but I got a few questions: 1. The speakers themselves are supposed to be Bang and Olufsen, but User Manualis vague on this point. Driver is Conexant SmartAudio HD. Is there some other driverI might install that would allow me to set the volume higher ? I see on the user forumthat many folks experienced crackling from the sound system. Not me. Not yet.I also see there is a different driver on the support website -- a Realtek HD Audio driver.Advice ?2. Some attention has clearly been given to the sound subsystem. Does anyone know ifthe speakers (on underside, front, of keyboard) are designed to project toward the userof the keyboard so that they project directly downward in the tented position ?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello @nscribner?, Welcome back to the HP Forums! I have read your post and understand that the volume is low on your HP Spectre x360 13-4103dx . I have researched the issue and have come up with a possible resolution. First, please perform a hard reset. Once that is complete, please follow the steps in these documents: HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 10, 8)Microsoft - Fix sound problemsTips for Using, Carrying and Protecting your HP Notebook PC To answer some of your questions, the specifications page does indicate under sound "Bang & Olufsen with dual speakers". HP Spectre 13-4103dx x360 Convertible PC Product Specifications. There are a few different audio drivers that you can try, for the best output from the notebook drivers page. Although there is no discrete data explaining the placement of the speakers, it would make sense that would be the desired effect. If the document did not help you resolve the issue, try restoring the BIOS and then check for windows updates.Thank you, I look forward to your response with the outcome. If this post has helped you, feel free to click the thumbs up!

I have the B&O edition HP Spectre x360. For some reason, only the left speaker is working - this is a huge bummer for me since the speakers was a selling point. I don't know when the right speaker stopped working. Several windows updates and a BIOS update has passed since I last determined that both speakers were functional, so there are unfortunately many confounding factors. At the moment, I cannot determine whether it's a driver issue, a BIOS/mobo-related issue, or a purely hardware issue (i.e. it's dead). For now, I updated the driver and checked the L/R balance and the issue has not been resolved. I don't believe that it's a driver issue, since both speakers worked perfectly fine with the old driver just a few months ago. I suspect that the right speaker is actually dead, but I don't know how to verify that. It could also be the BIOS update since it's not impossible for BIOS updates to mess with audio, but I've never heard of a BIOS update knocking out just one speaker. Please advise. Many thanks for your help!

My new-ish HP spectre x360 is having sound issues. First, the sound would slowly die until almost mute. I restarted it, and a different sound issue appeaerd. Now at any volume between 2-100, the sound is the same volume. It is probably a medium volume regularly, but if I want to play something softer (not to distirb people) or louder (to hear from farther away), it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

A:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Audio - Right Speaker has low volume while the left speaker functions normally

Hello. You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test  tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)
Here is how to do a simple driver re-install:
1.    Open the Device Manager.2.    Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" category.3.    Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".4.    Click "uninstall".5.    Do not check the box to “delete the driver software for this device”. 6.    Restart the computer. Windows will detect your device a... Read more

What's the difference between the HP Spectre x360 and the HP Envy x360? They both look the same. The only noticeable difference is that HP Spectre x360 has a Radiance Infinity display, while HP Envy x360 has an IPS display. Having the same specs, except for the display, why is the Spectre x360 more expensive than the Envy x360 ? Moreover, I thought that IPS is better than TN, which is my guess that is the technology used for the Radiance Infinity.

Hi, You've got few questions about those products. Well, come to a store and yoy can see the differences. Better still, you can buty 2 machines and compare.  For build quality, the HP Spectre x360 is much better than the Envy x360 you can also find Pavilion x360 - we are talking about SPECS and BUILD here about plastics and metals about wood and gold. Regards.

Upon opening the notebook on my desk, a series of cracks surfaced on the upper-left bezel of the screen, and extended across the screen. I keep my notebook for the most part on my desk, and when I travel, I put in the HP leather case, and in a well-paded bag. I've owned this notebook since August last year, and it has performed excellently besides the occaisonal loud fan noise and overheat.  I talked with a helpful HP Customer Support Rep, and I was told that if I were to send in my notebook, and screen damage will be presumed inflicted by the customer. I have also been in contact with the HP Executive board, but their reply did not grant me any help. I would like to know if I can send in my notebook for a proper examination, or if I can speak with a case manager on this issue. I really do not want to file a complaint to the BBB, but I feel that will be necessary if the material defect is to be assumed a damage on my part. Thank you in advance. I will include pictures of my display, as well as pictures of the siding to prove the lack of physical/blunt damage.

The 1-minute hold of the power switch worked for me, but it is darn hard to do because of the somewhat inconvenient power switch position - and if you waver for a moment then the 60 seconds starts again. I found it easiest to turn the 360 on its side on a table and then it is easier to hold the switch down for the full minute uninterrupted. This for me only points out the importance for manufacturers to provide a HARD RESET capability through an unfolded paperclip or the like. C'mon guys, give us what we need to maintain our products!

New owner of HP Spectre x360 - 13-4003dx here. I want to ask if the bottom of the laptop, the area above the fan openings where the FCC info/text lies, is supposed to creak when I press it slightly. I first heard this noise when I took my laptop out of the sleeve and held that area. At first I thought it was just rubbing against the sleeve, but after further examination, that is not the case. If this occurs with other models of the Spectre, it is a bad build quality, I am not sure which component is under there, but I want to know if the creaking noise is normal with only a slight press along the text area. Thanks.

Hi, I have an HP Spectre x360 that is a year and 5 months old. I was running it off the battery when suddenly a whole lot of smoke started coming from underneath the notebook and a smell of burnt plastic filled the air. Reading the forum I found that this is not something new to these HP Spectre x360 notebooks. Its it really possibile that HP have not activated a support program for who owns such an expensive notebook. My notebook is out of warrenty but I honestly think it was a close call, i was working on a wooden table when it started burning. Now I have a 1250 euro paper weight. I did try to contact support and was immediatly cut off once i gave them my serial number, or offered to pay for support. Will paying 30 euros actually achieve something, ie will they attempt a repair or will it be 30 euros just to be told over the phone that its something that simply cannot be repaired. Thanks

Just finished setting up my second Spectre x360 15t. The first one was a driver and screen flickering mess. As I'm finishing putting it through it's paces by running audio with a few tunes through Spotify and then over to Netflix to check dialogue, I've become aware that the fan has been running for some time. When I picked it up to feel the underside I was quite dismayed to feel how hot this thing was. Not cozy up to the fire hot but call the fire department hot. It was on a Xpad which was starting to get a bit toasty itself. No way this could ever sit directly on my lap. I know this is an ultrabook. I know i7 processors run warm under load but this fella gets HOT. I'm coming off a Spectre 13t with an i5 which is just as tight a unit as this one, but it never reached this kind of hot. I'm humorously concerned if I can put this on my desk while under heavy load without melting the finish off. Is anyone else experiencing similar circumstances? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

HP's lack of quality control is completely unacceptable and inexcusable, especially given the cost of the Spectre x360 line.I went through 5 (FIVE!) 13-inch Spectre x360's. All but one exhibited very loose trackpads (even very light taps will physically move the trackpad down and have an annoying loose click sound when taking your finger off of it). The one with an okay trackpad had USB-C issues. The trackpad -- arguable THE most important part of a laptop -- now feels like garbage. Hell, there are $200 Windows laptops and Chromebooks that have better trackpads than this $1,200 thing. It's extremely frustrating and disappointing. I REALLY wanted for the Spectre x360 to be my laptop (especially considering there's no other 2-in-1 out there that looks this good and is priced as nicely). Looks like the Lenovo Yoga 720 is next on my list. Just wish it had IR cameras for facial logins.

Hello, Last winter purchased a convertible lenovo laptop. The first one had faulty hinges, I had it replaced on the same day I brought it in and the second one had faulty hinges and a faulty touchpad. So, I decided to ditch the cheaper computers and splurged on a HP spectre x360 from Best Buy. I live 200 kilometres away from large retail stores like this so getting back and forth is quite difficult, Staples was very understanding about the Lenovo laptops, however Best Buy told me there was nothing I could do when I described the problems I was having with my brand new HP. Several months went by and I avoided using the computer as much as possible in order to avoid facing the mistake I made in purchasing it. Eventually, my old computer became completely obsolete and I had no choice but use this HP.  My problems were not limited in any way. They ranged from an extremely annoying touchpad that sounded loose and made strange noises, the fact that the screen was closing on an odd angle, and the fact the the screen could barely stay open. A slight touch or even shifting the laptop would cause the screen to move. I could forgive these flaws if I had abused this computer or if it had received heavy usage, however I barely even turned the thing on. I contacted HP support and I must admit that they were polite, friendly and had my return materials sent very quickly.  My first bad sign involving the shipping process was the fact tha... Read more

Could not be more upset with HP. As I search the forums I am seeing so many people with this problem and looks like me the college student is the next on the list. My spectre x360 is just over a year old, shocking just past it's warranty, and the motherboard fried itself. I paid nearly 1400 dollars for this laptop as an investment in college. Now I'm only praying a local repair shop can salvage the memory. I'm left without a laptop during exam month and have lost all my college work. I was then asked at tech support to pay them nearly 700 dollars just to look at my laptop. I will honestly never buy from HP again, I paid good money I saved for college on a laptop I loved and it is now gone with HP refusing to help me out in any way. I took care of this laptop like a child had protective casing and everything not a dent or scratch to be seen, clearly a problem with HP and they won't fix it. So dissapointed.

hi,i recently bought HP Spectre x360 with highest specs an. d i'm facing some real serious issues with the touchpad / clickpad. as many others in this forum and reviewers pointed out, the clicks are not being recognized. In my case, I'd say it is around 50% of the clicks don't get registered and I have to click again to make it work. That is really frustrating and enough to make me come here and post this question. I really like the laptop and this is exactly what I've been looking for but this clickpad is a real deal breaker. I followed some suggestions on this forum and also tried some troubleshooting myself (since i myself is a support engineer) but to no avail. I changed the synaptics settings to try and remove too much intelligence from the touchpad and at least get the basic functionality right, but i continue to miss the clicks. I also tried replacing the driver with synaptic one but the problem continues, which tells me that it is something related to the hardware piece than the software / driver. can someone here please help me with this? if i hadn't liked the laptop, i wouldn't bother posting here to try and find a solution, i'd simply get rid of it and go with lenovo yoga 3 pro or something else. but this laptop has really high build quality and classy looks, but probably killed by this $25 buggy piece of hardware.

I have only just bought the spectre x360 and all has been well for the first two weeks. This week I found that it has been a little slow to start up. When I opened the machine in laptop mode I would get to the lockscreen where I have to enter my pincode. Despite entering the pin using the keys and trying to use the touchscreen the machine remained unresponsive and I had to open and close the lid unil it did respond which it did eventually. Today I started to have problems with the screen. Whilst using Microsoft Word (2016) and the windows DVD player the machine again stopped responding and the screen went blank. I had to shut the lid and when I opened it again it was still blank. When I plugged it in to a power socket using a charger it seemed to boot up again. The battery was low but not so low that it had wanred me or gone into a hibernation mode (about 15%). When connected to the power socket  I was able to continue using Word but the screen was flcikering. Later this evening I tried to switch to tablet mode. Hey guys! I bought my new ash silver HP spectre x360 13" recently and Ive discovered som faults in the production. I am now wondering if anyone else noticed these faults and if I could/should exchange my example for a new proper one ( I do genuenly love it) Firstly, it is not balanced proberly when sitting on a flat surface. Ive made a video showcasing it. Which can be seen below. This is a major annoyance for me, simply cant stop thinking about it.. https://youtu.be/JOVhRYA1Fvg?t=248. Secondly, there seem to be something loose within the trackpad. A click noise is produced when using it for scrolling. This makes it virtually impossible to use silently while someone else is trying to sleep next to me.. Example below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHY6_oatLuE And Thirdly. Some users have been asking me if i was having any battery drain issues. I did test it once, full charge 100%, laptop turned off. 8 hours later it still had 100% so no issues there for me. Is it possible to get a spectre x360 13" without any of these issues?

I know that you don't officially suport linux on that computer, but it would be fun to be at least linux compatible. Thing I know:There was a bug that really look like this one on the Dell XPS 13. The bug was in the bios, wich was setting the sound card to alternative mode that was not working. I think is the same here. I need to find a way to tell the bios to load everything like if it is windows 8.1 (Yeah, I just ask no special treatement!)  Thank you,I will give all support you need. I really wish to correct this bug. PS: (HP if you correct this bug you will sell three more of those computer, they all want one in the lab!) Follow up:It's seem that we are now hable to use the lagacy mode from the sound card. It's good, but not perfect. The fix for the i2c will come soon, the latest kernel code ask about a mysterious drivers file that doesn't exist right now in the linux firmware directories. So, this case is close because the issue as been addressed. Follow the launchpad bug for furter improvement.  **SOLUTION MAY NOT BE THE SAME FOR YOUR DISTRIBUTION** From Spano: If you use gummiboot you should have somethi... Read more

I SOLVED IT! After hours of pain, i can now use the built in soundcard with headphones, as well as the internal speakers. HOW TO: Edit grub config by doing:'sudo vim /etc/default/grub' Edit the line:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash'" To:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi='!Windows 2013' acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'" Then run:'sudo update-grub' Reboot TWO times. BOOM! Sound works in headphones. The sound card is now in HDA mode (not I2S). To confirm, run:'aplay -l' and make sure you have the following in the output: 'card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC3242 Analog [ALC3242 Analog]  Subdevices: 0/1  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0'I'm running kernel Linux spectre 3.19.0-21-generic #21-Ubixuntu SMP on Ubuntu x64. BR,Ingmar  EDIT: Even the speakers are working, they were just muted in Alsamixer. Hallelulja!EDIT2: Added the 'acpi_backlight=vendor' parameter to the options line, based on @spano 's input. Thanks!EDIT3: Fix as pointed out by venividivici24

I cannot create a new folder on the desktop. Right click of the mouse pad does nothing. Shift Control N does nothing. This is ridiculous. Any help is appreciated.

Does right click work at all? Try right click on Start button and see if it produces a menu. Some people has experienced problems with their touch pad, try using a mouse and see if right click works.

Hello, I just picked up a refurbished HP Spectre X360, and I have a question about the fan noise. My fan makes a whistling sound when it picks up speed.  It's normally not on, and only cranks under heavy load, but there's definitely a whistle.  I'm just wondering if this is normal or not.  I have the opportunity to return this unit if it's not normal, but so far it works really well.  I have no problem with "whooshing" or air blowing, but the whistle kind of stinks to hear. Any thoughts?

I just got a new Spectre x360 13 (13-w023dx) and I am having the exact same buzzing noise as described in the video. This is crazy and ridiculous for a supposedly top of the line laptop. Is HP monitoring this thread and is there a proper fix ?

A:Re: Spectre x360 noise

Fix it by return two of them... QC is awful... You can also turn off the GPU but your laptop will be useless.

I have a Spectre x360 notebook that is soon two years old. It hasn't been used a lot, but recently I have taken it into active use again. I'm experiencing unexpected shutdowns, and it seems to be running hot. I have noticed a slight burning or plastic melting smell just now while it is charging. This seems to be the same problem as https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Spectre-X360-motherboard-bu..., only they have had hardware actually burn. What can I do to fix this problem before the notebook dies completely?

You should be able to hear the fan running and if it's hot and the fan is not running, you should turn it off and get it serviced. You don't want to fry the cpu.

I was using my spectre x360 with the battery charged to 100% and plugged in. Then suddenly the entire system just shut down. It won't turn back on (even after a hard reset) and the charge indicator light no longer turns on when its plugged in. So I've basically got a $2,500 paperweight sitting on my desk, and I must say I am extremely disappointed in this less than 2 year old supposedly premium laptop from HP. This device should have easily lasted 4-5 years not a little over 1. The laptop itself is in prime condition and looks brand new, there are no dents or scratches, and it has not been dropped once in its entire life.  Reading through this forum it looks like this is a very common problem with this particular laptop from HP, so I hope that there is some reasonable solution.

My spectre x360 is the skylake version and came with an m.2 ssd that supports sata 3. Does anyone know if the laptop would also support an NVMe ssd?

A:NVMe for my Spectre x360?

Hi, I think HP has stopped publish Maintenance and Service guide for this series but from my record, it only supports Support for single PCIe / SATA M2 solid-state drive configuration as storage (scope M2 2260/2280 DS solid-state drive) in the following configurations:? 256-GB solid-state drive self-encrypting drive (SED) supporting multi-level cell (MLC)? 180-GB solid-state drive supporting MLC? 128-GB solid-state drive supporting MLC Regards.
