Q: Build 14316. Hyper-v Hypervisor greyed out

Build 14316. Hyper-v Hypervisor greyed out.

I have Intel VT enabled in the UEFI BIOS.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Processor i5 4460 which has vt-x capabilities. However Intel Processor id utility says it doesn't.

Hypervisor worked with previous builds

EDIT: When I disabled VT-x in the BIOS intel id utility shows processor is VT-x capabile. When I enable it ID utility says not VT-x capabile?!?!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Windows 10 Insider Preview 11082 (upgraded from Windows 1151 fully updated.

I had installed the Hyper-V feature in the latest Windows 1151 but had not used it before I received and installer the Insider Preview edition.

The Hyper-V Manager was configured OK but when I tried to start a VM I created (in this case Windows Server 2016 TP4 since I want to explore the new nested Hyper-V feature) I got the message that the Hyperrvisor was not running. Indeed when I created the services admin tool the HV was not running although it was set to staRt automatic. I could not start it - failed immediately. Most annoying I could not remove the Hyper-V feature. Windows started the removal process after rebooting but then rolled the changes back because it could not apply them. I restored Windows 10 from a recent image I created using AOEMI Backupper. The restore worked flawlessly and instead of trying to remove Hyper-V I've disabled all its processes. Now I can install VMware Workstation and Virtualbox but I really wanted to try Hyper-V

Has anybody got Hyper-V working on Windows 10?- what version if so. Is there a workaround for the Insider Preview or if not how I can I file a bug?

TIA

Hey community. I was hoping for some clarification. I am use to working with VMWare ESXi VSphere for hypervisors. So I have been labbing for my MCSA and I notice alot of the context of MCSA material describes installing an instance of Windows Server 2016,
and then turning that into a Hyper-V Server. What I did was I installed Hyper-V Server 2016 on my ProLiant. Is there any reason why I would not want to do this ? I had to reference alot of white papers, manuals, eventually blogs, and I think a youtube video
or two before I could manage it from my remote PC. It involved adding the target computer via power shell, customizing the hosts file, adding the server within the PC's computer configuration I forget what exactly. I also had to disable the firewall on the
Hyper-V Server 2016 before the Hyper-V Server 2016 hosted on the ProLiant started appearing in my Hyper-V Manager from my Windows 10 Pro machine.

However I was listening to this gentleman's youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdJJ4jiYx0Q
and he explains that Hyper-V Server is meant to be installed as a bare metal Hypervisor which is what I did do but because i was accustomed to working with VMWare SAN's that are the same way where you install the Hypervisor on the host machine and start
spinning up virtual machines. However I noticed i got some updates on the Hyper-V-Server 2016 the other day and not all of them wanted to install ... I believe some of the updates were for Windows so it went int... Read more

Installed preview build 14236 a few days ago. I ran into what seemed like oddities with Edge. I just wonder if anyone else might have some similar observations on theirs.

I had some 4 or so open tabs in Edge. and has some other desktop apps open. Standard desktop type.
But when I went to try to use ALT+Tab to cycle thru open windows, seemingly all the Edge tabs were gone away. Not showing there thru ALT+Tab.

But the windows were really there.
And today, since MS Process Explorer is now off ( it somehow decided to close), now I have no problem with Edge tabs.

So I guess, I'd like to pose 2 questions:
Anyone here having issue with ALT+Tab ?
Anyone here using Process Explorer as a resident app ? If yes, what version are you using?

Since this update my card reader caused me considerable grief, 15-20 mins to boot. This was a card powered by a PCI card. Removing the PCI card and card reader solved the problem. So I bought a reader that plugged into a USB 2 header on my motherboard, but this does not work correctly. The reader will read SD cards, but when I insert a compact flash card all I get is a message on screen telling me to insert a card. Obviously it's seeing the card hence the message. As photography is my main hobby this is a serious problem for me. I can still upload my photos by connecting my camera, but I much prefer a card reader.
Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone please suggest to me for such condition. Thanks you.

So I went ahead and installed BASH to see if it will be of any use to me as as Linux and Raspberry Pi enthusiast.

It's very easy. Just go to Turn Windows features on or off and find Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta) and tick to enable it.

Restart your PC, open a command prompt and type "bash" to install BASH...

That's it... you are ready to "sudo" away...

The first thing I did was try to connect remotely to my Raspberry Pi (in the other room) a la SSH terminal window. Just type "ssh [email protected]" where the X's correspond to your Pi's IP address. And presto! Goodbye PuTTY!

I mounted my NAS to the Pi and opened up "Media-On-Console" (MOC) on the Pi..

And now I can play my music from my NAS to the Raspberry Pi...

Or play my internet radio on the Pi..

These are just simple tasks just to test running BASH natively on Windows 10.

Hi there
Funny issue here on a VM on a Linux (CENTOS 7) Host with build 14316.

On a Large (4K) monitor running in Full screen mode - after a while the Bottom taskbar randomly fails to re-appear. I need to sign out and then sign back in for the problem to go away (re-boot not required). I usually have taskbar set to Autohide.

This problem only occurs if I have the taskbar at the bottom of the screen -- doesn't occur if the taskbar is at the top/sides or if I'm not in Full screen mode.

I had this problem way back with a very early build -- it went away but has reared its ugly head again.

Could be a VMware problem (running Workstation version 12.1)

A colleague of mine running the same build of VMWARE workstation with the same Monitor but running it on a W7 HOST doesn't get the problem so it could be VMWARE.

I haven't updated the Linux HOS or VMware workstation for at least 3 previous builds of Insider.

Hello, I have installed hyper-v on a lenovo thinkpad t470 (and tested this problem on 3 other t470 thinkpads). The thinkpad has: a) an Intel RJ45 adapter b) a Sierra wireless adapter EM7455 c) an Intel wireless 8265 adapter Hyper-v does work correctly as long as there is an RJ45 Ethernet cable connection plugged in (and connectivity). When you remove the RJ45 connectivity it instantly disables the wireless adapter (intel 8265), whatever you try the wireless adapter remains unusable. As a test, I also upgraded the intel 8265 adapter to an intel 9260 adapter ... but the problem remains. I have to say that they both use the same intel driver. If you try to enable the device in the computer management console, it is instantly disables it again after a few seconds. This seems to be specifically related to the lenovo t470 laptop as we don't have that kind of problems on other laptops. I also tried to enable/disable some BIOS options etc ... Has anyone experienced similar issues or has any ideas how to solve the problem? I would really appreciate some help as I have absolutely no ideas ... what else to try. Hello Everyone,
Thank you for checking the query, this is with regards to a setup for ATA 1.8, where most of the DCs are Virtual and around 20 Hyper-V hosts each having 1-2 DCs and other VMs for other functions, under normal conditions either you could go with approach
1 or 2 as below
1. Install  ATA lightweight Gateway on each DC - No approved.
2. Install ATA Gateway on Each Hyper-V host to receive Mirrored traffic from DCs on that Hyper-V host -
No feasible
But we need to check the possibility of approach 3, based on the article below

3. DCs on Different Hyper-V hosts to mirror traffic to ATA Gateway(s) on Different Hyper-v Host(s)

ATA Gateway
Domain Controller
                           Considerations

Virtual
               Virtual on different hosts

Make sure your virtual switch supports this scenario.

So the bottom line is Does Hyper-V allow or can it be configure to sent the Mirrored Traffic from a VM to a VM on another Host, the configuration could involve power shell.
As per the below article it can capture traffic from Physical machine if port mirroring is configured to the Hyper-V host.

The symptom is 2 adapters in Device Manager that I can't remove:

From time to time, this problem interferes with the Ethernet card on the PC, and I lose all connectivity for the host OS.  So I really need to fix this.  I've currently recovered connectivity by deleting my VM and the virtual switch in Hyper-V
manager, but I'd like to resolve this problem properly by eliminating these 'unattached' adapters.
I've read many posts and still am not convinced I know which steps to take.  Many of the posts seem a little dated, so I'm concerned I'll create additional problems if I follow old stuff.  Here are a few of the solutions I've seen on the boards:
1) edit the registry, up to 50 times.  This doesn't sound like a great idea but if that's what it takes...

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/20e826af-b484-48d8-ac24-c3e7c4cc30fd/cannot-remove-ms-virtual-network-switch-adapter-leftover-of-hyperv  and

2) remove the adapter in something called the Administrative Website.  I don't really know what that is.  Is that a current piece of software for use with Hyper-V on Win 8+?  I have been using the Hyper-V manager.  Is that not good
enough?  If Administrative Website is relevant, where do I find a copy for Win 8.1?

Hi,

I was explaining a group how they can use BlackLight, RootkitRevealer and GMER etc to detect rootkits. Then somebody popped up a question of Hypervisor Rootkits and BluePill and I had no 'good' answer.
How can one detect a hypervisor rootkit in a reliable manner, specially if you are running the computer inside the guest OS ? Are there any tools available to deal with such rootkits?

Thanks all

A:How to detect a hypervisor rootkit

Discussions about Hypervisor Rootkits have been around for several years now and there are many articles about the concept.Rootkits have been created as Type II Hypervisors in academia only as proofs of concept. By exploiting hardware features such as Intel VT or AMD-V, this type of rootkit runs in Ring -1 and hosts the target operating system as a virtual machine, thereby enabling the rootkit to intercept all hardware calls made by the original operating system. Unlike normal hypervisors, they do not have to load before the operating system, but can load into an operating system before promoting it into a virtual machine. A hypervisor rootkit does not have to make any modifications to the kernel of the target in order to subvert it?however that does not mean to say that it cannot be detected by the guest operating system, as timing differences may for example be detectable in CPU instructions. The "SubVirt" laboratory rootkit, developed jointly by Microsoft and University of Michigan researchers, is an academic example of a virtual machine based rootkit (VMBR), while Blue Pill is another. In 2009, researchers from Microsoft and North Carolina State University demonstrated a hypervisor-layer anti-rootkit called Hooksafe that provides generic protection against kernel-mode rootkitsRootkit: Hypervisor levelSubVirt: Implementing malware with virtual machines...Blue Pill is the name that Rutkowska gave for this new breed of rootkits that take advantage of AMD?s Pacifica... Have you guys noticed a ton of "unsolved" cases popping up with users.
Here is a good example.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/581337/malware-spyware-and-hackersequals-months-and-months-of-going-insane-help

I have the same problem. The reason no tools, scans, rescue disks, rewriting the MBR, flashing the BIOS, flashing firmware, etc. will never detect or fix the problem. Even a wipe of something like Jetico BC Total Wipeout/hdparm, clearing all or almost all places where flash memory can hide will get rid of it. Even a new hard drive won't get rid of it. Anyone have some SPID tools and know assembly language, lol ?

The reason it never goes away because they are on a virtual machine.

If you look at a lot of these farbar reports etc. I just glanced over a few here...there is a lot of files that don't belong. Many of the files are old experimental files from MS or Intel/AMD.
As the posterabove mentions...it absolutely brute forces in via bluetooth and infects everything around it. It even got my camera.

I can tell pretty quickly when someone has it.

Does anyone have any experience with succesfully getting rid of a hypervisor/firmware/bootkit/BIOS type of exploit?
There is some research papers on the subject...but no one really lays out how to actually get rid of it. Especially if the VM the user is on restricts things like "blue chicken" or other VM detection tools from being run.

Its not a system hardware problem as it is a triple boot system with Win7/Win10/Insider Win 10. Each are on separate drives. The Insider installation is on a separate 1GB hard drive and the only thing installed, other than the default Win 10 applications, is Malwarebytes.

I don't see a 14316 ISO yet so I can't just download that and reinstall.

Edit: Forgot to mention this is in a Oracle Virtualbox VM of Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview 64 bit.

I want simultaneous Windows and ubuntu 16.04 both for heavy CUDA and OpenCL development. The gpu passthrough will be critical to both running operating systems.I am considering dual-boot to simply get started.Eventually I would prefer no time overhead for switching between these two.VirtualBox on ubuntu will be used to host more systems not needing gpu.VirtualBox and Hyper-V don't gpu passthrough AFAIK.  Willing to consider VMWare ESXi or xen.I've heard that KVM might work, but I can't understand what I have read online.I have no experience in ESXi, xen, or KVM.Any guidance will be appreciated. P71 Intel Xeon E3-1505M v6 vPro MBNVIDIA Quadro P3000M 6GB64GB(16x4) DDR4 2400 ECCWindows 10 Pro 64 (preload)P71 4K NT 2D MC CS WLWW

Researchers Create Hypervisor-Based Tool For Blocking Rootkits.

New technology 'patches' the operating system kernel, protects it from rootkits

This article is a must read for us all.

A:Researchers Create Hypervisor-Based Tool For Blocking Rootkits

New tool seeks to block rootkits by protecting their targets.

Rootkits often replace functions provided by an operating system's kernel in order to infect a machine and obscure their presence. A paper describes a way of blocking rootkits by gathering all these functions in one place in memory, then locking down the memory.

Hi all,

I created a full backup with Acronis 11.7 from a physical Win 2012 R2 Server and try to restore it via Acronis Universal Restore to a Hyper-V (Gen2 / VHDX) Virtual machine.

Hyper-V is installed on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host.
Hyper-V Host is working properly, a lot of other physical machines restored successfuly with Acronis Universal Restore.

During restore Acronis 11.7 shows two Errors at 68%  (screenshot)

"VMBus" & "Hyper-V Gen Counter v1" devices Driver missing

When i click "ignore" on this two errors, the restore finished immediately.

Starting the restored VM is not possible. (Black Screen - No Error)

Bootrec /Fixboot /Fixmbr is not working

Bootrec /scanos cannot find any installed operating system.

Hello, i am having trouble installing the Windows 10 mobile emulator for Visual Studio 2015
First I got this message when I attemped to install the first time
(see screenshot 1)
Dropbox - install microsoft emulator 1st try.PNG
So I went to the bios menu and seen Hardware Virtulization was disabled (See Screenshot 2)

I then went back to install the Emulator again and then I got this message

So I then went to the website suggested on the first error message

to find out what went wrong and it said to a SLAT Check. I download the software and I performed the check and the results were good.
(See Screenshot 5)
Dropbox - install microsoft emulator screen 3.PNG
It then said to perform the "Checking BIOS settings required by Hyper-V for Data Execution Prevention"
Went to the performance option and the message said my computer supports hardware based DEP. So I should be able to use Hyper V

A:How To Install Emulator And Hyper V - Hyper V Won't Install Windows 10

Simple: you have Windows 10 Home edition, it has no Hyper-V. Hyper-V is only available in Pro, Education and Enterprise editions. There's no way you can run Windows Phone emulators because the only way to run them is Hyper-V, which you don't have because of your chosen edition.

You can use Windows 10 Home edition to connect to Hyper-V virtual machines on Pro, Education and Enterprise editions, therefore even the Home edition has parts of Hyper-V to offer this so called Virtual Machine Connection to another Hyper-V server.

In screenshot, green highlight shows the parts of Hyper-V you have in Home edition. They allow you to to connect to so called Hyper-V servers (Windows 10 Pro, Education, Enterprise) and use virtual machines like for instance Windows Phone emulators installed on them over the network.

The parts required for a computer to act as Hyper-V server for virtual machines is highlighted red. That's the parts your Home edition is missing.

Today, we released a new Windows 10 Preview Build of the SDK and the Mobile Emulator to be used in conjunction with Windows 10 Insider Preview (Build 16278 or greater). The Preview SDK Build 16278 contains bug fixes and under development changes to the API surface area.

The Preview SDK and Mobile Emulator can be downloaded from developer section on Windows Insider.

For feedback and updates to the known issues, please see the developer forum. For new developer feature requests, head over to our Windows Platform UserVoice.

Things to note:
This build works in conjunction with previously released SDKs and Visual Studio 2017. You can install this SDK and still also continue to submit your apps that target Windows 10 Creators build or earlier to the Windows Store.
The Windows SDK will now formally only be supported by Visual Studio 2017 and greater. You can download the Visual Studio 2017 here.
Known Issues:
Compilation fails on non-Windows 10 platforms

When building apps with the minimum target platform version set to 10.0.16278.0 you get the build error:

?The program can?t start because api-ms-win-eventing-classicprovider-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.?

This will occur if the minimum target platform version is set to 10.0.16278.0. To work around this, edit your project file and change the version to a previous released SDK. For example:

Eye Control (beta)
Yesterday, we announced Eye Control, which makes Windows 10 more accessible by empowering people with disabilities to operate an on-screen mouse, keyboard, and text-to-speech experience using only their eyes. The experience requires a compatible eye tracker, like the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, which unlocks access to the Windows operating system to be able to do the tasks one could previously accomplish with a physical mouse and keyboard. We are starting by supporting the EN-US keyboard layout, and we are looking to expand to more keyboard layouts in the future. We are excited to release this experience as a beta and would love your feedback!

Setting up Eye Control:
Own or purchase a Tobii Eye Tracker 4C (Coming next will be support for Tobii Dynavox PCEye Mini, PCEyePlus, EyeMobile Plus, and I-series.)
Download and update to Tobii?s Core eye tracking hot fix release 2.10.11.6458 and run calibration with your own profile
Check for Windows Updates; the new Tobii Eye Tracker HIDClass Driver should be found on Windows Update and installed automatically.
Make sure your Tobii ... Read more

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are excited to release Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16232 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring! We are also releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 15228 to Insiders in the Fast ring. Earlier this week, we announced new end-to-end security features coming with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and this build for PC includes some of those new security features.

A note about app updates
In order to provide Windows customers with the highest quality inbox apps possible, we will pause testing new versions of our inbox apps with Windows Insiders. This means that Insiders will not receive app updates from the Windows Store for our inbox apps that are newer than the apps included in the build. Insiders may notice that some features we were testing in our inbox apps ? including recent updates to the Photos app ? will temporarily disappear. This is because some of our inbox apps won?t have all the latest new features without getting an update from the Store. It is critical that Insiders are experiencing the same version of Windows that will be released as the default version for all Windows users. Insiders will once again start receiving app updates in the very near future. As always, your feedback will help us tremendously to define the overall Windows experience and insure the quality of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is excellent for our customers.

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16288 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring only (not Skip Ahead). As we mentioned previously, we are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we are releasing new builds to Insiders more quickly and that these builds will include mostly bug fixes. You?ll notice that this build continues to include a bunch of good bug fixes Insiders will enjoy.

On Build 16288, you will notice that the watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop has disappeared. You will also see that the OS now reports as ?Version 1709? which is the official version number for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update release. However, this is NOT the final build as we?re not done yet. We?re just now beginning the phase of checking in final code to prepare for the final release. So we will have more builds to release to Windows Insiders between now and then. And the desktop watermark may re-appear in these builds.

We are also releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 15250 to Insiders in the Fast ring.
