copying contacts & email messages

Q: copying contacts & email messages

I need help in copying my contacts and email messages from my old laptop (Window 98, Outlook 2000) to my new laptop (XP Professional, Outlook Express 6).

At this stage i can boot up the old laptop, but it shuts down within a minute or two, how can i get my information off the old computer.

Could someone also give me step by step istructions on how to backup emails in a word document other than copying and pasting each email.

Preferred Solution: copying contacts & email messages

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

Hi asharif

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Outlook 2000 uses a .pst file.

Do a Search for .pst and copy the .pst file to your new laptop.
You might check the C:\Windows directory first for your .pst file.

Outlook 2000 will also need to be installed on the new laptop to Import the information over to Outlook Express.

Once you copy over the .pst file to the new laptop, verify the .pst file is not marked Read-only, then open it with Outlook 2000.
Start Outlook Express,
File > Import Messages > Microsoft Outlook

Let us know if that works for you or not.

Thank you so much for your help. Recently alot of my email contacts have written to me saying that they got an email from me with no subject attached, just Re: . Some of their computers have alerted them that the email was suspicious and not to open it. Other people DID open it and there were Viagra ads or animated russian websites, etc...I've gotten alot of notifications in my spam box with the title: [email protected]....failure notice. If I click on it, it usually shows the email contacts that messages tried to be sent to and the website that was trying to be sent....usually all different.
We have ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.467.0...we've run two separate scans and no virus or threats are detected.
Just this evening, about 30 emails were sent out between 6:33 and 6:34 pm.....!
I appreciated any help you can give me!

Under XP, I have always backed up my OUtlook Express address book and email messages from the C: drive location.

Now under Windows 7 and using Windows Live Email, I am trying to find the appropriate contact and message files so that I can back them up in the event of ever needing a possible OS reinstall.

Can someone give me the path to these files (including the file names and suffixes)?

A:Backup Windows Live Email Contacts and Messages

Hi Coastalguy, there is no need to backup email in WLM as it will still be available by accessing your account directly. WLM only uses a contacts list and if its the same account your signed in with, they will be available on WLM when you sign in again.
If you don't sign in to WLM messages can be saved. I use WLM 2010, so yours will be slightly different if using WLM 2011.

I started receiving emails from a few friends this morning asking me if I indeed send out an email titled "Secure shopping" from my yahoo mail address recommending them to shop at a website (www).ushopcn.com I first thought it went to a few email addresses (mostly obsolete since I deliberately do not use my yahoo email much). But later in the day I received the copy of this email and I could clearly see that it did go out to a lot more email addresses than I thought and I now suspect to all of them in my yahoo address book. I sent out a short email to most who have received it apologizing profusely! (not from yahoo mail of course!). I then noticed that my address book in yahoo mail is wiped out. Strangely, the email showed up just a few times in my Sent Folder (and only showing that it went to ONE email at a time...when, from my friends' forwarded emails back to me. it was obvious that it did go to MANY at the same time!).

I have run Spybot S&D and mbam...I am clean they tell me. I have deleted most of the emails in my Yahoo Mail folders. I have not attempted to send out a new email from Yahoo Mail. Everything else appears to be functioning properly, including my Outlook mail and GMail accounts where I do most of my email stuff.

I am now paranoid...What else can I do? I would appreciate any help from the experts here, thanks!

i was advised to change my password for my email to something which was capitals&lower key + numbers. Scan using malware and avira. didnt find anything, and had no problems since.

I have LiveMail on my machine at home and at work. Sometimes a new mail address or correction comes into one and I want to copy it to the other. Since LiveMail has no way to save a single item and then transfer it, I want to be able to copy the entire "contacts.edb" to my other machine. But since the "users" directories are not quite identical, it doesn't take, LiveMail shuts down and reboots with the old contacts file.
Emptying the contacts and reimporting will not do. For one thing, I have Chinese characters inside the names and addresses, and these are all stripped on the reimport. For another, it seems a time-consuming solution.
"Importing" the file from the other everything just duplicates the entries (and messes up the unicode characters, too).
Is there some easy way to do this? I tried copying both the ebd and the pat files, but they contain directory links particular to each computer.

First, I'm not an Outlook user...

What is the difference between the .pst files and the .pab files? Well, I know the pab is the address book, but in terms of exporting, I'm a bit lost. I tried to export the contacts in Outlook 2000 by saving them in a new, uniquely-named .pst file. I then copied that file to a floppy, went to a different computer, and attempted to import those contacts as a distinct & separate contact list, but it merged the original contact file with the one on the floppy. (It never even offered an option to do it as a separate file.) I then opened the file from the floppy, but it showed the Personal Folder as empty, and clicking on the Contact icon only brought up the newly merged contact list.

When I started doing research here to figure out what I did wrong, I started reading about the .pst vs .pab files.

Is it possible to have two separate contact lists on Outlook? If exporting the contact list to a .pst file doesn't allow for a distinct & separate file, what does? Or, what did I do wrong?

Thank you!!!

Long story, but I have two computers: one desktop as my main machine that receives my email (Outlook 2003 configured to receive mail through two different accounts), the other is a laptop on a wireless connection that has Outlook 2003 that has never been launched. My desktop is on the second story of my house while the laptop is on the first story and I now find it necessary to configure my laptop to receive my email (if possible), but I would like to retain the settings and configuration of my Outlook account on my desktop machine. My logic is that once I close Outlook on my desktop and open it on the laptop, then the laptop will then receive all messages that are on the server. I'm trying to copy (not move) a category of contacts in my contacts folder in Outlook to a subfolder. Is this possible? (Please note that the contacts in this category are also in other categories as well, if that makes a difference.) I've been trying to copy my contacts from Outlook 2003 on my work PC to my home PC that uses Outlook 2000. (Obviously, these two PC's are not networked.) I've been told that the best way is to use the file/new/Outlook Data File to create the "Outlook 97-2002 personal folders file (.pst)". The file does appear on the desktop (or whatever directory that I chose). However, the contacts do not appear in that file. When I try to copy those into the file, Outlook pastes all of them into the "To:" area in a new email. Why will these not post into the pst file that I created?

I just want to copy my contacts to my other PC. Why is this so difficult?

A:Email inbox show loading messages. Unable to view messages

You have not said what browser you are using so I will just give a guide using IE8.

The most common fix for this problem seems to be to delete your browsing history, cookies, etc. With the browser open click on Tools, Internet Options, then select Delete under Browsing History, on the next page uncheck all the boxes and click on Delete. Give it a minute or two to complete and then reboot the PC.

This will have deleted all your saved passwords so you will have to enter and save any you use.

This address will go directly to the mail page, if you get stuck, and you could also try using the refresh button.

Hi guys,
'Boopme' had me run MiniToolBox and he wrote that he found "errors and other issues" and he bumped me to this thread.
Norton now seems to be removed and the restart was successful w/ out a restore.
This is what I wrote in under the from "Am I infected?" thread;

Been having problems with my laptop running Vista Home premium svc pack2.
One day, a month ago, Norton was not updating properly. Upon the next boot-up windows would not start and I was forced to restart in safe mode with a system restore. This was successful but Norton Security Suite was still not updating properly.
Since then, on a few occasions, I have attempted to uninstall Norton without success thru the program uninstaler. Norton is unresponsive. I even got the Norton rep. to do a remote deletion of all registry files of Norton. But they all returned after the reboot of my PC because windows would not open and I had to start-up thru system restore.
Since then my yahoo email been hacked and spam sent to the contacts of my address book.
I know I got something but I don't know what.. Can anyone take a stab at what I might need to do?

Once found how can I print them so that I can enter them one by one on a different phone?

A:iPhone Contacts and Messages

You are going about this the wrong way. You can sync or backup your contacts on gmail contacts. Open a gmail account (its free) then (with phone connected to your PC) go on iTunes under Info and select Sync Contacts with Google Contacts. Presto! Your contacts are now online. Then, you can sync your next smart phone to Google Contacts. You can do the same with Outlook, but that is not free, but if you do it this way, you can export your contacts out of Outlook and print them out as you wish.

So this is my situation.
I am a Windows XP SP2 Windows Live Messenger user, and my girlfriend is a Mac user with w/e version of MSN Messenger. Basically I have a cell phone too, from which I can use MSN by text messaging or from The MSN Mobile website on my phone.
The thing is, her messages never show up. For example, if I use The Mobile site, I get her MSN name and then a blank, with no message. The Type button is gone too.
And she doesn't even receive the text messages I send to her MSN thing ... Like 222-023-187. Normally that would send it to one of my contacts if they used Windows, but she doesn't get it.
Is this a Mac-only problem?

Does anybody know how to copy and save outlook express messages in from Vista to another pc using XP?

A:Copying outlook express messages

Have a look in the file menu for Import and Export.

You should be able to export the messages then import them on the other machine, unless you mean you want to share mailboxes between both machines, in which case it isn't possible.

If you do want to share mailboxes, look at changing to using GMAIL (which can use to get email from other accounts too) then you can use Outlook express to view the email, but keep it stored online, meaning you can access it from both machines.

Hi everyone. A few days ago I got a mailerdamon failure notice. I looked and it was a link sent out to a bunch of my contacts....I've changed my password about 4 times, and it just happened again today. I'm changing my password from another computer btw. When I look in my sent folder, it doesn't have the virus email as one that's been sent. I just downloaded Avira Antivirus, and it says its blocking a site from connecting to my computer, it scanned and found two GEN/pwd.zip virus and quarantined them. I'm also getting a DEP error on IE when I try to get on the net.

Worth noting, the past few days I was on another forum do to my computer trying to connect to "pinball corp". I was using malwarebytes at that time, which I've since uninstalled because Avira says it might conflict with it. We went through all the malware removal procedures, and when I tried to run TFC.exe, my computer froze. So I hardbooted it. When it came back on I couldn't run any programs, and my wireless network driver was uninstalled. I was able to delete a lot of programs from my startup folder that I wasn't using, and when I restarted I could run programs again.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have you tried using the extensive filter and spam blocking on Hotmail?

If you are usiing OE also go to it and export your address as an .csv file then go to this url and import them to your new hotmail account.
