Internet Explorer 6 Odd Behavior

Q: Internet Explorer 6 Odd Behavior

My computer was recently infected when I visited gamecopyworld.com. I've managed to clean out the infection, but IE is exhibiting some odd behavior ever since.

When I open IE and try to use the address bar to connect to a website, it looks like it's trying to connect, but then it just sits there and doesn't display anything and when I try to close the window I sometimes get the "End Task" dialog. I can open pages stored locally on my hard drive and link to other web pages from there (this is how I got the virus/trojan/etc. removed by using Housecall, turned out to be Vundo), and when I open a new window while IE is already running and displaying a web page, I can then use the address bar to go to a new page. I've downloaded and run several of the programs mentioned in articles I've read on this site:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
ATF-cleaner
LSPfix

I cleaned out everything they recommended and I'm still having problems. Firefox seems unaffected.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try these fixes:Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

Hi everyone in these forums, Im posting this because I suspect I've got a virus(es) on my desktop computer, I use mainly internet explorer for browsing the web, but recently it started acting a little bit weird, whenever a I try to surf to a website, it appears a window saying that "the navigation to "x" page was canceled (where "x" is any website url) or denied, suddenly the website that was loading doesn't open and a "webpage cannot be found" page appears.

Ok, I'm relatively new at the whole computer thing and I know, "What took you so long?"

I have Windows XP but just recently, when I try to open Internet Explorer, it may take a few attempts before it opens.(ya' know the hourglass expires before anything happens) However, when I log off, ending program task panel opens, then ending program iexplore.exe opens and keeps opening for the amount of times I tried to open internet explorer.
This leads me to believe that it in fact opened somewhere but not anywhere I can see it. Also on occasion, the task panel will turn blue for quite sometime when I close out an open window.
I tried searching for an answer to this problem but to no avail, so any advice here would be most appreciated.

Hi. My Internet Explorer just started acting strangely on my Netbook. Sometimes when I click on a link I just get returned to the Google homepage. Sometimes it's a chore trying to even get to the Google homepage because all these different search home pages come up. Sometimes there are advertisements that pop up at seemingly random times. Sometimes I get an error when trying to register on a website.
I may not have an active antivirus program running so that may be an issue. I would also like to check to see  if my Registry has been compromised if possible.
Also I have practically maxed out the drive with too many song files so I probably should remove some of those. The computer is also much slower than it was.
Thanks.

Recently I've been having trouble closing Internet Explorer successfully. Oftentimes I'll get a very suspicious error window that says "closing this window may cause serious problems." Generally when that happens I'll end the process via Task Manager rather than clicking on anything on the error window. I'm a bit paranoid that I may be infected with a key-logger of some type and I'd very much like to keep my online accounts secured. Once I've gotten the all clear from you guys I plan on creating new strong passwords for all my accounts. It seems like I haven't seen the problem since installing the latest Windows Updates recently (including the latest malware removal tool) but I thought I'd ask the pros just to be safe rather than sorry. I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi All,

OK, first I am not sure if I am still infected, but the computer is still not acting right and considering everything I don't trust it .

Running Win Xp / MCE Version 2002 SP 2

I run NIS 2008, last full scan was 3/31/09, and last update was 4/1/09. Run NIS religiously, always keep subscription/updates up to date.

Ran MBAM 4/2/2009 DB 1939 - now clean
SuperAntiSpyware 4/04/2009 7:10 AM Core 3829 - now clean

Here is the scenario.

On 4/1 Firefox began crashing erratically. I did the update for 3.0.8
When I restarted Firefox I could not get an Internet connection, even though IE7 connected fine.
I did a system reboot, at that time decided to go forward with Microsoft update to SP3 (I never reboot my computer, usually leave it running and just hibernate).
AFter that, system would load, prompt for user/pass but then just go to wallpaper, nothing else.
System would just hang there, did several reboot attempts.

System would give black screen on Safe Mode, would still hang with Wallpaper on "Last Known Configuration".
AFter that used MSCONFIG to get system running with wireless connection. At that point noticed several things:
*Google in Firefox and IE would redirect search results randomly to different pages
*Explorer.exe even though not technically running, was eating a LOT of memory, I am talking 350K+ and up,
Tried to run DDS.scr, just blipped the Dos prompt and disappeared. Would not run.
Uninstalled MS SP 3.
Got system up and running on Safe Mode with ... Read more

Recently, after having vanquished Worm.win32.netsky, explorere.exe has become a resource hog. An example:

When opening a folder and/or subdirectory, the desktop is cleared of all icons, explorer.exe jumps to 100% CPU usage, and PF usage climbs from about 325mb to 550mb, and I?m unable to continue working. This condition last anywhere from 45 seconds to several minutes. Then the icons are restored, control is relinquished back to me, and I?m able to continue working.

Some or all of the above symptoms happen while trying to open new emails using Outlook, saving files from application, opening existing files &c, &c, &c.

Most of the symptoms go away if I disable explorer.exe and run applications from Task Manager.

One irksome problem with or without explorer.exe running is a tendency for the system to reboot. All by itself.

I?ve followed ?Before You Post About a Problem? best practices.

Any clues?

Thanks,

I have been using WIN7 build 7000 for about 6 months. Generally very happy and stable. One rant, however: In windows file explorer, when I click on a folder, the whole file tree jumps around in a bizarre and distracting way. I have to hunt around for my folder before I proceed. Am I missing something here? I've looked at all the ckeck boxes in the file explorer settings- nothing really seems to make a difference.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks.

Anyone got any clue at all?

Hi, Wish you all good tidings. Have been using Win7 nearly 6 months with a recent sp1 update. In the explorer pane (LEFT) , as you move thru the folders , and click the thumbnail on a particular folder it opens the contents of the said folders on the RIGHT pane.Let me say that a particular folder is SNAPPED (can I have the exact terms please ).
Ok I have snapped DIFX and am trying to expand Alwil software. Image-1

Alwil software expands as expected. Image-2.

Next I snap ALwil software -Image -3

I try to expand the folder of Alwil software. It disgustingly goes and sits at the bottom. -Image -4

It happens everytime and if folder has still more folders it is still irritating. I have to compress the folder and expand it again , and only then it goes to the top. I have seen this behavior in Win 7 premium editions too.

A:Explorer Pane behavior.

Try this. Go to Organize-.Folder and search options and uncheck Automatically expand to current folder.

I fear that an old PC I recently purchased from a garage sale may have had a virus that spread throughout my network.

First, a little bit of background about this computer. Around December of last year, it was infected by a virus that seemed to be neutralized after some assistance. But within a week, the computer wouldn't even start up anymore, as it would freeze up before even displaying the desktop icons. To my dismay, I found out that the Vista install CD had ran away to some remote area of the downstairs garage, so I installed a copy of Windows Server 2008 I had on hand (I got it for free). Anyways, long story short, it turned out there wasn't an antivirus in the world that would let me install their software without paying money, due to the fact I had a server OS. I wound up installing Microsoft Security Essentials, knowing very well that it was unsupported. But, it was the best I could do for free.

Now, let's fast forward to this weekend.
I had found and purchased a PC for 10 dollars at a garage sale. The owners said that it had been in storage for a long time, but it had some nice goodies that came with it, such as a TV tuner card, and it had Windows XP. So, with great amounts of excitement, I slammed that computer tower onto my desk, plugged it in, and turned it on. It wasn't fast, but it seemed a bit cool, and a bit of a blast to the past after having Windows Vista for the longest time. I then connected it to the Internet. At that moment, I noticed ... I'm really going crazy with this... I had explore every setup for the folders without luck...

Now the painful part.... I did re-install the computer from zero... wipe out it completely... after re-install all the test run perfectly... no issues at all... until I restore a couple folders (that shown the issue) from the backup... immedia... Read more

A few days ago I found all letters that were in the Spain subfolder were now combined with all other letters. The subfolder Spain no longer existed. It took me many hours to get this straightened out. For one thing, I could no longer create a new folder within the LETTERS folder. A computer technician I contacted told me that was because the LETTERS folder was READ-ONLY. Unchecking this property didn't help, so I created another dummy folder to transfer all the files in LETTERS to the dummy folder, delete LETTERS and rename the dummy folder as LETTERS. This apparently solved the problem until today: the subfolder Spain is now gone again and all letters are now combined in one folder. Just out of curiosity I brought up the DOS command and looked in USERS...DOCUMENTS>PERSONAL DOCUMENTS>LETTERS. A dir command showed the SPAIN subdirectory plus all the non-SPAIN letters, exactly the way it should be. My question: why doesn't Windows Explorer show the SPAIN subfolder and why does it combine all letters--SPAIN and non-SPAIN--together?

When using Windows Explorer, when I click an expand folder 'triangle' the folder list jumps so that the selected folder is at the bottom of the window. This is very annoying as each time I expand a folder, I must recenter the folder tree.

Is there some setting which says 'don't move the folder tree when expanding folders'?

Hello Welcome to SF,

You could try these steps see whether it works

Open Windows Explorer.
Click on Organize pull down menu.
Select Folder and search options.
In the General tab, tick the check box for Show all folders option under Navigation pane section.
Hope this helps,

On my new Win/XP/Pro installation, when I open up Windows Explorer in the "My Computer" view, I get the expected listing of drive A (floppy), drive C ("local disk"), drive D (Data), Drive E (DVD-RAM), etc.

However, when I open drive D, it creates a new window. So I opened "Folder Options" and it indicated in "General" that for "Browse folders" it will "Open each folder in the same window." "Use Windows classic folders" was also selected.

However, if I go down into a subdirectory, no more new folders are opened. The same window is used.

Can anyone explain how to keep all this in the same windows?

I've done this before, I'm confident I found the registry edit on this site, but can not locate it now after looking for hours.

Windows 8.1, I've enabled the [Quick Launch] toolbar with the guide on this site, and have created an icon for [File Explorer] on it. When you click on it, it launches Windows File Explorer, as you would expect. If you click on it again, it minimizes the window that's open, clicking again restores it. I want the Quick Launch shortcut to launch a New Separate Instance of Windows File Explorer, not just minimize or restore the one window.

I've done this before, I'm 90% sure it was a registry fix. To be clear, I am not looking to alter the function on the "Start Screen" tiles, and I don't want to have to hold another key while clicking. If I click the File Explorer icon 10 times I want 10 File explorer windows to open. I know it exists, I have just reached the end of patience trying to relocate the guide. I went through tutorials and searched google in 20 different ways and 10 pages deep, it wasn't this hard to find it before, similar to the Internet Explore tweak for the same result.

I just did a full reset to my system and want to re-tweak it before creating a new backup image.

Thanks for any instruction or a link to the existing guide.

Hello everyone,

These problems started happening maybe several months ago. I don't really use this laptop that often, so I have no idea what could of caused this. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Here are a list of the problems that are occuring.
1. If I press computer in the start menu, it “freezes.” It continually searches for drives but the blue wheel keeps spinning and nothing shows up even after 10 minutes. So far I've only noticed this with Computer, I can just press Documents from the start menu, and it instantly loads, and then click on the drive and go to where I want to go.

2. Sometimes a window will freeze for no reason. If I right click a file or folder in that window, it will always freeze that window. I have tried to right click a folder in 5 separate windows and it froze every one of them. Doesn't matter where the file location is, it can happen to any window. By freeze I mean the same spinning blue wheel, and the window cannot be moved or won’t respond ever again (I've left the window for hours and it never unfreezes). The only way to fix this is to end explorer.exe in the task manager and restart it, but that doesn't prevent it from happening again.

3. Some icons like text documents will look like a blank page with its upper right corner folded. Resetting the icon cache fixed this. On my desktop, currently my text documents and VLC player are missing their normal icons, replaced by this blank page.

4. In the column in the far lef... Read more

Hello for almost a week now I've been experiencing some frustrating and puzzling connection issues for my internet. I can browse the web and go most places but it seems like any time I attempt to start a download for an application, the webpage just sits there and loads forever. There's not even an error screen usually; it just sits there indefinitely. I've noticed it also happens when I try and access some login pages on websites. I first noticed it on Steam, but it's occurring on other places too. I can't tell if this is malware or a virus or if some setting on my computer got changed without me knowing; I can say I didn't change anything between when it was working fine and the next day when it started. Any help is appreciated.

Today Avast kept telling me that it was blocking potentially malicious websites, but it did not find any infections. I also ran MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware, and the only things found were some registry entries and tracking cookies which I quarantined/deleted. PeerBlock 1.2 also shows tons of blocked incoming HTTP connections, even when all browsers, Steam, Origin, etc. are closed. I don't know what is causing these hits on Avast and Peerblock. (I never turned on HTTP blocking before in PeerBlock, so this may not be unusual behavior). RUBotted shows clean.
My IE options keep getting changed to block downloads, also.

In case it helps, early on, here are some logs from MBAM and dds,

Every time I turn on the computer I see the icon that the computer is connected to the network but I don't have internet.

I check the detail and it confirms:
It is connected to the network but not to internet.

I disconnect from the network and connect it again and now it also gets connected to the internet as expected.

The detail of my connection is:
MyHomeNetwork (Private Network)
Access: Local and Internet

I always need to disconnect and connect again my network when I start my computer. And some times when I get problems and I am not able to load web pages I need to do the same.

What is wrong?

Hey everyone, first time here. I'm having an issue with all browsers on my system (I've tried Firefox, IE,Chrome, Opera).
The specific issue I'm encountering is this: When I try to resolve a website, such as Amazon.com, it will take somewhere from 10-15 seconds to query and finally get the site to load. But once I'm there, I can zoom around and browse within that root http address at my leisure, it's speedy and takes a second or two to pull up additional pages when browsing through items on the site. This is new behavior over the last week or so. Additionally, if I turn off the browser and start it again, if I were to try to pull up amazon again, it would take another 10-15 seconds to even ping the page for pulling up.

I did a speedtest, I have 50 down and 9-ish up. I've used 6-7 different type of virus/malware/rootkit removal tools to find anything that could cause this. I've flushed my DNS settings, though other computers on this network don't have the issue this one does. They load webpages instantaneously. Some websites take even longer to query for on this machine, depending, and if images within a site are hosted from somewhere else, they take forever to resolve on a loaded webpage as well.

Starting the computer in safe mode with networking didn't change anything, I used process explorers to search for any clues as to what could be affecting me while this happens, I've turned up nothing. The recovery point from Feb. 2... Read more

You could try to see if there is a newer driver for your network adapter and install that

or You can try a usb network adapter and see if it still has the problem

or I think you can try uninstalling tcpip and reinstalling it. I don't have win7 in front of me, but it's something like control panel, network connections, properties on your network connection, then select tcpip 4 and uninstall it and install it again

There was also some command line thing for reinstalling some tcpip thing that I did on windows 8 (that may apply in your case) when someone's PC could not resolve domain names other than google.com, but, I forget what it was (and I just spent 2 minutes trying to re-find it and failed)

Hi, I'm having a problem with my internet that I'm having trouble fixing. I can open any internet browser and surf the web with no issues, but when I try to download anything the site I am downloading from seems to either freeze or timeout. I refresh the page, try clicking the link most sites have to kick start the download, but 95% of the time the pop-up window asking you where you would like to download the file to never initializes. This happens with any file from any site, I've tried downloading from CNET, Softpedia, Adobe, and various external mirror sites. Even windows update won't make it more than ten percent before it gets hung.

Its my personal computer, I am the administrator and sole user registered my 4 month old Windows 7 Home Premium computer. Hello everyone, I've recently had a false positive virus on my computer that was quarantined as a keylogger [Click Here] and since then my computer has seemed to act sort of strange. First of all, hardly any programs respond correctly or are extremely slow, as an example, I just opened notepad, a seemingly easy program to run but as I was typing or just anything, it froze then became unresponsive along with explorer.exe (windows.exe = start menu, task bar, desktop ect.). The day before I ran three different virus scanners to determine if I had anymore virus's on my computer or not. (I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, BitDefender, and Microsoft Security Essentials).
Malwarebytes came up as clean but BitDefender and Microsoft Security Essentials both came up with one trojan each. But I determined that they where both false positives because I've used them for a while and they caused me no trouble at all, but back to my main problem. Whenever I start up Google Chrome or any web browser it takes a very long time for them to load the webpage or anything at all, sometimes not even loading at all (simply crashing).

I've looked at the "Monday Internet Doomsday" virus on the FBI's website and scanned my computer's IP and DNS and found out they where clean or supposedly clean. Then just curious I started the Command Prompt and typed in "ipconfig /allcompartments /all" and first noticed that my desktop's "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection" was differ... Read more

It just says something about "Can not complete restore". I did some searching and managed to switch the Wireless Zero Configuration on, and even change the display style back. But I still can't get on the internet. My wireless sees the network no problem and other computers in the room use the network with no issue. Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

I have been whacking my head against the wall. I have removed all entries that Ad-Ware can find. I have the most recent version of Adrware SE and the most recent definition files.

I keep getting "An Error Has Occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will now close." Any help would be appreciated tremendously. Here is my hijak log:

Google has been redirecting, google images will only load a certain number of images and internet explorer opens randomly, when I do not even have it installed or use it. Also, phantom music/ads/speaking play when no programs or windows are open. I have run rkill, MalwareBytes and TDSS killer with no infected files being found. And that's where the extent of my knowledge runs out! You guys have helped me fix everything else, but now I finally need to post as I cannot finx this one based on other advice.
Much appreciated,
Cheers.

I know, strange title but let me explain. Recently my I started noticing when outlook receives an email the sound would be garbled. I then notice internet speeds were slow. I usually get 55-60Mbps down and after testing when the garbled new email sound happened I would be down at 4-6Mbps down. I thought this was strange so I tried updating all my drivers however they were all up to date. I then thought it was my on board ethernet on my mobo so I bought an intel pcie card and have been using it since. The problem still occurs. I see no other issues on the computer but the ones listed above. Once I restart my computer everything is back to normal. It usually last 1-2 days before the problem appears again. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help.
