Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

I used to have a similar problem before, the monitor went into power saving mode because of (I thought at the time) my overheating Ati X1600 XT video card that didn't have a fan, seemingly randomly, then I'd reboot and all would be well until the next boot. But now I have a relatively new card, only a few months old that has a good heatsink on it, as well as a 550W PSU and a computer case with two 12cm fans, one at the front, one at the rear. The case is metallic on the larger sides.
Could this be caused by my A8R-MVP motherboard not allocating power correctly all the time ?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.
After upgrading the OS to windows 10, the fn keys (f9 and f10) for adjusting the screen brightness are not working. I purchased a new computer the other day and it is running Windows 10 Home. One thing that's annoying me is that when I adjust the screen brightness through Control Panel it keeps getting undone. I don't want to squint when I look at my screen. I keep having to increase the brightness all the time. How can I set the brightness and have it stick? Thanks.
I was adjusting my battery settings on my laptop and now my screen has gone much darker. I cant seem to locate a brightness adjustment in the control panel. Can anyone make a suggestion? The laptop is a lennovo ibm thinkpad.
actually, i think i just figured it out. I had changed the setting to maximum battery life. Just switched it back to maximum performance and issue went away

I have a HP dv6 laptop, intel core I3, 4 GB, running windows 7 sp1.
The issue is the brightness will rapidly adjust itself intermittently. This is a new problem, Im not sure if there is any settings I can adjust or whatnot before taking it in for repair. Any help is appreciated!
Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.
EDIT: My sister has the same laptop try holding the Fn button and tapping the F7 and F8 buttons to adjust the brightness. Those buttons might be sticking causing the issue.
I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers
I have a NIVIDIA RIVA TNT2 MODEL 64P monitor with Windows XP installed. The brightness, color etc. on the monitor seem to be at the max but all images/pictures/movie files etc are very dark. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on the monitor?
I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.
Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys
Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers
I had a look at the specs and it says "Integrated Intel? HD Graphics" which isn't helpful as there are different models of the Integrated Intel? HD Graphics

I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.
Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,
Whenever there is something dark on my display ( this could be a picture or a website or something else) my brightness automatically adjusts to that environment. So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. I looked up the forum for similiar problems and tried some things with the power options and stuff but couldnt not fix it..
However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,
Thank you guys.

I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Should I manually install an older version of the driver software? Any other potential solutions?Read other answers

Okay I have a strange problem I have a HP EliteBook 8460p Core i5-2520M 2.5GHz 6GB AMD HD 6470M laptop. when I first set it up after installing the video drivers the screen went black. I pulled out the power cord and the screen came back on because of power options having a lower value set for screen brightness. I used the power menu to lower the brightness one notch when my computer is plugged in.
The problem my screen isn't has bright as it could be and I can't figure out how to get the highest brightness setting to work. And yes the other brightness settings work so it's not that problem with auto brightness or whatever it's called and I have it turned off anyway.
Sounds like a bad inverter to me. Good news is, even if the unit is out of warranty, it's probably a $20 part. Bad news is, you almost always have to rip a laptop 1/2-3/4 apart before you can even get to it. The majority of the time the inverter is located in the bottom part of the display bezel where the company logo is.
If the unit is still under warranty, this is a perfectly valid claim, so get on the phone with HP and make them fix it.
Last week, after critical and security updates were installed on our desktops, several machines wouldn't boot properly. Upon hitting ctrl-alt-del, the display would go black. we had to run system restore to get them to work. Turns out, one user, after
restarting 3 times, was able to use the computer as normal. I've heard this may be a known-issue with Windows 7 that's been happening for years? I've never experienced it prior to this batch of updates. Any feedback? Any insights? I did remove update kb3097877,
hearing it may be related to that. But, at this point, I lean towards chalking it up to a hung process on restart, just a fluke, since it only happened on a few of our 1200 pcs. The others updated with no problems. And actually, the pcs that had the issue,
also updated successfully once we got them booted up.
I have had my laptop for nearly half a year now and I just recently found an HDMI cable in an old junk box that can be connected from my widescreen Samsung DLP to my Laptop. The problem is that when I set my TV to be the main display the task bar does not fit on screen and I can barely see it. Another problem is when I play my games or watch videos they also appear to be bigger then what my screen is. I cant even see the exit or minus button when I make my windows/browsers in full screen. I have tried changing the screen resolution, but that doesn't work either. I then thought it might be my TV but it does not give my the option to change its aspect ratio.
I there solution to my little problem? Like a download or a program that is naturally in the computer that can adjust the aspect ratio (not resolution) manually for extended displays? And the resolution is on its recommended settings by the way.
What is the graphics card on your laptop? Both AMD and nVidia cards have overscan options in their software which should give you the capability to adjust your display size manually until it fits. Also check that you're outputting the correct resolution for your TV.Read other 3 answers
Until recently, I was always able to adjust my monitor's screen resolution. Now whenever I try to adjust it to 2048 by 1536 pixels (the most resolution), I get an error message that says:
OUT OF FREQUENCY
HF: 95.4 kHz
VF: 60.0 Hz
HF: 30-70 kHz
VF: 50-160 Hz
What does all this mean? Why can't I do something simple like set my screen resolution?
Help would be appreciated... thanks.
That's a pretty high resolution. Sometimes resolutions are listed that a monitor doesn't support. Where you able to set it there before?
I've been looking for a program to adjust my screen resolution. I'm connecting my computer to a TV, unfortunately either my graphics card or the TV suck. I used to have a program with which I was able to set my custom screen resolution. Does anyone know of such a program?
Thanks in advance!

AOC 2353 monitor, on windows 7 has a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080
when it is set here I notice even the desktop boots up quick and efficient. opposed to when it is set at 1600 by 900. which is best on the eyes.
problem with 1920 by 1080 is that the folders and print are far too minute to see.
this is with Intel onboard video, from the processor.
is there a way to expand the text and folders? browsers can be zoomed
would having a video card help?
If you go into the advanced display settings, you can increase the size of items and fonts and can "bold" the text.
I've got bad eyes, so I do this every time I set up one of my computers after I install the Windows operating system.
The native resolution for my 27" monitors is 1920 X 1080.
This is an example of what my desktop looks like after changing the display settings.
As you can see, the icons and text are noticeably larger and bolder than they would be from using the default settings.

So I bought a new netbook for work travel recently and loaded a program that I need to use. Program runs fine and all, however the prescribed screen resolution for the program is 1024x768 and the netbook (with Windows 7 HE and an Intel GMA 3150) doesn't seem to want to go past 1024x600. Does anyone perhaps have a thought or a way to get 7 to display more here? I don't mind if I even just need to scroll around to get to all the material, but right now its just cutting off part of the program making it impossible to work on some of it.
While your 1024x768 program is a standard 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x600 is a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) as many netbooks have. I'm pretty sure that if 600 is the maximum pixel height it can display but you still need to match the 4:3 aspect ratio program, then you'll have to go down to 800x600 rather than up. Try that and let me know how it works.

Hi, I have this 4 year old Lenovo Y560(config below)
The discrete graphic card has probably fried a long time ago, so last year when I did a clean install of Windows, I had to disable ATI Card permanently in the device manager using safe mode and used the Intel integrated card. A few days ago, I booted up windows only to encounter, "A disk read error has occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" . I tried to boot up using WIN 7 install disc, but soon after the Starting Windows logo , the screen turns black and I am left with a cursor in a black screen. I tried to boot into Safe Mode but still I encountered a black screen with just the cursor .
I booted with Ubuntu live usb and was able to access all my partition and did back up and even formatted the Windows Partition. I tried to boot using a WinPe and faced the Black screen with a cursor again. I even reset BIOS to default, changed Graphics Adapter from "Discrete' to "Switchable' and vice-versa, but no effect at all. When I boot up using Ubuntu and ran lspci | grep VGA I can see both cards listed. I even tried to boot up using Windows 10 preview disk, still I get a black screen after the Windows loading screen.
I can't afford to buy any laptop presently since I am currently at college, so using Ubuntu for now. Is ther any way to install Windows 7 again? Is it possible to get the ATI Card working properly- reballing, reflow?
