Multimedia Keyboard Shortcut

Q: Multimedia Keyboard Shortcut

UPDATE: This is working differently than what I'd thought. Here is the revised description.

I have a Chicony multimedia keyboard with an Email button. When Internet Explorer 8 has the focus, the Email key on the keyboard does not work. If I switch to any other app, including Windows Explorer, the email button opens Outlook Express. But if IE is in the foreground, then the Email key does not work.

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a microsoft keyboard with multimedia keys. I have assigned one of the multimedia keys to the Instant Viewer feature from Intellitype Pro. I like this feature and think it would be more useful to put it on the mouse button but I have searched and cannot find any .exe for the Instant Viewer to create a program shortcut. I was thinking I could get around this by creating a shortcut to the multimedia key instead and then assigning that shortcut to the mouse. Does anyone know if it's possible to do this?

FYI, this is not the same as pressing Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Alt + Tab. The Intellitype Instant viewer covers the whole screen when activated while Alt + Tab just gives you a thin horizontal strip in the middle.

A:Can I create a shortcut to a keyboard multimedia key?

Welcome to Seven Forums chillz. It is possible with AutoHotkey. I found this post. If you are not familiar, I will point one of our Gurus to this post, and see if he can elaborate:

Currently I have a desktop shortcut to PuttyCyg (a modified version of PuTTY) which I have configured Ctrl+Alt+C as a keyboard shortcut to launch the program. Trouble is, once there is one instance of the program open, when I enter Ctrl+Alt+C again, instead of opening another instance of the program, it brings the window of the currently open instance to the front. This is strange, because when I actually click on the shortcut multiple times, the default behavior is to open multiple instances of the program. How can I change it so that hitting the keyboard shortcut forces new instances to open? Do I have to resort to things like writing a VBScript?

Hi. I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite Click 2 Pro and at the top, two of the keys increase/decrease the screen brightness (much like two of the keys at the top of a Mac do the same). Well, I discovered that if I press the key to decrease the screen brightness too quickly and bring it down all the way to the lowest brightness and keep clicking, it turns off the keyboard! As in, none of the keyboard keys will work anymore.

The only way I know of to fix it is to restart the keyboard. I'm wondering if there's a way to 1) disable the fact that it does this, and 2) find a way to turn the keyboard back on without restarting the computer, since it is, quite frankly, annoying when I have three word documents and about 10 browser tabs open. I can't figure out how to disable/stop this one key by using the keyboard settings/ toggling the hotkeys/etc.
Honestly, I'm not even sure if this is a Windows 8 issue or Toshiba issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

If under warranty, return this to the store ASAP for replacement/repair. There's not much we can recommend you do, hardware-wise, that you can do and not void the warranty.

I suspect the keyboard may be sticking,,, you can try another USB KB for troubleshooting though. Plug in the USB KB and see if that behavior is duplicated using that KB.

I found an old HP PS/2 Multimedia Keyboard that I had previously and love the feel and touch of the keyboard.  However, I can't get it to work with my desktop computer.   Since my computer does not have a PS/2 keyboard port/connection I bought a PS/2-to-USB adaptor and plugged the keyboard into a USB port.  However, my computer will not recognize this device and I could not find any drivers anywhere.  In Device Manager, it displays "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)."  Any ideas?  I really love this keyboard.

I tried to search on HP's site but didn't have any luck. I have a new HP Multimedia Keyboard #P2359AA. I've installed the drivers/software that came on the CD. Almost none of the hotkeys work even when I set them with the software. Even more so, when I'm using Windows Media Player, the pause/play/next/back won't work right. If I press PAUSE, it will pause for a split second and play again. Next/back track buttons skip like 4 tracks. And Media Player button brings up nothing. Log Off doesn't work. I don't get it. Those buttons worked fine with iTunes but with a .DLL I had found on another site.

Anyone have any ideas what I need to do? Is there something I need to change for the keyboard be recognized properly?

I bought and installed a Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard. It has it's own software that I installed but there are times when it tries to dial into MS. I wanted this keyboard primarily for the volume control it has on it although I may use some of the internet keys.
I have Nortons Internet Security 2002 installed and it gives the usual message that contact with MS is being attempted. I do NOT give permission but I have to repeat this 5-6 times in rapid "fire-order". I have looked at the software to be sure I didn't overlook taking away that option when I installed it but there is no such option given. I don't want it doing that and though I understand from a forum member that the keyboard it just checking to see if there is a later update---well, I don't want it checking--for anything!! Does anyone know how I can prevent this from happening--short of removing the keyboard??!! I tried the keyboard feature without the software but, as you guessed, it won't work. I was unaware that this would be done by the software/hardware and the package did not indicate that it would.
Have I checked with MS--Naw, are you kidding!!

I cannot figure out where XP is seeing that it needs to be reinstall. Also, because the software is no longer available I have no drivers for it to install. Hi guys, I'm having a problem similar to this guys from this closed thread.

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/508480-dell-multimedia-keyboard-not-working.html

I actually did replace my registry key with the same value as that one guy's, but it still didn't solve the problem.

It's the same exact keyboard in his picture, but the mute/volume adjust/home button etc don't work when I press those.

This keyboard did not come with any software and works fine on my other computers, I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Anything I can do to maybe make the multimedia buttons work? I have tried plugging it into other USB ports as well. (It's USB not PS/2)

2. The error message you posted cannot be found anywhere on the internet. You must have the most unique computer in the world since this isn't the first time you've posted an error message no one else has ever had.
3. Did you just try reinstalling this software under the Administrator account?

Yes, I know that this problem has been hashed around over and over. I have read countless posts but still no answer. Here's my problem:

The Multimedia keys stopped working one day. I can't seem to find out why. I am using a P4/w Intel 915GAG mobo, W2000+SP4 and MS Multimedia Keyboard (KB-0168 1.0a) that is wired. This is the same keyboard, computer and system as it came when new.

I have checked 1) The Uninstall window and it shows that IntelliType 2.2 is installed 2) The Adm Hardware page and it says that there is a 101/102 key or MS Natural keyboard installed and working ok 3) Hijack this in the Startup List shows that keyboard\type32.exe is started 4) If I go to the MS Keyboard icon on the desktop and use the Keys, Restore Default Settings the keys work again -- until the computer Sleeps or is Rebooted. The keys stop functioning again until I restore them again.

If you need any more information, just ask and I'll post it.

Thanks, Steve-x8086

Have installed new MS wireless keyboard and mouse to my laptop. Mouse works perfect. But the keyboard has strange behavior. Pressing a single keyboard letter key types out different letters, i.e., press "k" get "ke", press "l", get "l9]", press "d" get "di3", press Enter get My Pictures or My Music opening up, and the list goes on with pressing other keys. I'm fairly literate and have tried lots of things. Resync'd with receiver, changed the channel, plugged USB directly into laptop USB vs. into the HUB I have, plugged in the PS/2 connector (the receiver has both USB and PS/2), along with USB plugged in and by itself, updated the drivers (it's recognized fine and states "This Device is Working Properly"), upgraded the Intellitype Pro software from MS website (v.5.2), unplugged my wireless network card that connects me to cable internet through my wireless router (no home network setup), and lastly plugged the keyboard into my desktop pc and it does the same thing! I've already had to ship back the first keyboard I ordered cuz it didn't work at all ($12 to ship back) and paid $70 for the set in the first place, so don't want to keep dumping money into replacements if none are ever going to work. :-( Any additional suggestions to get the keyboard to act normal would be most appreciated.

Recently replaced the spinny drive with an SSD and performed a clean install of Windows 7 Professional X64 on a Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv8t 1100. However, I am running into two issues.

Hi, I just recently received a new computer I ordered online from Futureshop.

My problem is that the wireless keyboard that the system came with is not working.
What I mean by not working is that when I press a button nothing happens. Not one button provokes a response. My wireless mouse works fine however my keyboard does not. The model number is 5189URF (K). I pressed the "Connect" button on the back multiple times yet no response occured. I have tried restarting my computer multiple times, plugging in the USB receiver in different usb ports, and even put new batteries in. However all failed to produce a result. Whats even weirder is that when I go to control panel, and go to hard ware and then under the category of "Keyboard", I click the "Check the Keyboard Status" and I see under devices "HID Keyboard Device", supposedly the wireless keyboard. It then says the location is on USB Human Interface Device and the Device Status is "This Device is working Properly".
I click on properties of device and go to drivers and there is no indication of need for driver updates or anything of the sort. Checking the program list, I find that I have a driver called "Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard Solution"
Should I find another driver and uninstall this one? Reinstall it? If so, is there a specific site I should obtain a certain version from?

I got a new wireless USB keyboard/mouse today - a SPEED WKB-1200. Unfortunately, there are no drivers available on the website for it, so I'm stuck with the generic Windows one and therefore can't map the multimedia keys. I've tried everything from AutoHotKey (though I might've not been using it right), SharpKeys (which didn't recognize the multimedia keys at all), etc, and to no avail.

The odd thing is, I was previously using a Microsoft Digital Media Keyboard 3000, so I had the Intellitype software installed for it. Before I uninstalled it, however, I pressed the IE key on my new keyboard and it worked. Obviously, I wasn't able to map them, but I thought it was something worth noting.

Hi,
I recently purchased a "new" computer [2nd hand - but reformatted] - Dell Optiplex GX280.
I have only recently connected a wireless keyboard to it [it was a keyboard/mouse combo I used for years on my old computer with no hassles but the mouse didn't scroll up nicely anymore - just worn out - so now I only have the wireless keyboard from that set].
I also attached a new Logitech wireless mouse that works fine.
My problem is this; when I first connected the keyboard, it appeared to work fine - but ALMOST none of the extra features worked; I figured that was because I hadn't installed the driver yet - so that is what I did [Microsoft intellitype pro 2.2].
BEFORE I installed the "necessary" driver, some of the specialty keys worked [email, for example]; after installing the "necessary" driver, only the basic keys work - none of the extra [multimedia] keys.
Anybody have any ideas?
It seems weird that installing the relevant driver would reduce funtionality, rather than improve it.

A:Microsoft wireless multimedia keyboard 1.0A

After reading another forum, I just happened up on one liner that solved my problem.
The receiver has 2 jacks; a USB for the mouse [that I no longer use - as previously mentioned] and a purple PS-2 jack for the keyboard.
I read in the other forum that you could use just the USB jack to power both. So I removed my $22 PS-2 to USB adapter from the keyboard jack and plugged in the USB jack [which hadn't been plugged in because it was solely for the mouse [or so I thought].
Now the multimedia keys work fine.
Gee, thanks Erwin0265 for solving my problem - lol.
Seriously though, I hope that this post may help others having sinilar problems.
Cheers

Hi all. I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard that sits about 6 inches away from the dongle sensor, fresh batteries and a week old install of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit edition. My problem is this, the multimedia keys on the keyboard will work on and off, sometimes running perfectly and others as if they have no signal. It seems to be localized to just those multimedia keys as the normal keys function properly.

At first I didn't load the Intellitype software as Windows recognized the buttons and would open the appropriate directory or control the volume. When the problem occured, I did load the additional software but it too would function part time.

I know it isn't a huge issue, but it does nag at you when it works sometimes and then stops a few minutes later for no reason, sometimes lasting even through a reboot. Hope someone can offer some help, thanks.

All,

I am running Windows 7, and currently using a Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard 1.0a. This keyboard has a rather disconcerting feature called the "f-lock", which is a key that you must press if you wish to have access to the function keys F1 thru' F12.

The problem with this f-lock key is that, after you boot up, you must explicitly press it on in order to access the standard function keys. Absolute nuisance.

There is a registry hack type of workaround that has been circulated but this is for Windows XP, and does not work for Windows 7 or Vista.

Does anyone know of a solution that is specific to Windows 7 ?

Thanks and regards,

So I just connected to them to the sound card output (I'm assuming the quality should be a touch better), and I noticed that I no longer have control over the audio via my multimedia keyboard. Is this normal? I kind of enjoyed the quick volume access from the keyboard... Thank you!

OK, this issue seems to have resolved itself. Might have had to do with the wrong default playback device being set (right click on the sound icon in the tray).

RELEVANCY SCORE 50

I have just purchased and installed a new HP wireless keyboard and mouse with multimedia keys to replace an old Microsoft multimedia wireless keyboard. According to the instructions I found online I can toggle between standard F keys (1 to 12) and multimedia keys, by pressing FN + esc however this does not work. They are permanently set to F1 to F12. The only way I have been able to use the multimedia keys is to press the "FN" at the same time. EG FN + F11 to increase volume. I have tried to remove the keyboard driver and re-install but this made no difference. Is this limitation a bug or a "feature" or am I doing something wrong. I guess I can live with it but I hardly ever use the regular F keys but I do use the multimedia ones quite a bit. Many thanks for any crumbs of advice. Tony
