Enable protected mode

Q: Enable protected mode

please somebody help. I have a new website developed and there is a problem at the shopping basket. As soon as I confirm the item in the basket it takes it to zero items. The problem is "overcome" by disenabling "Enable Protected Mode" in the security settings of the IE Browser 8. Is this just my machine or are all recent browsers with the above options affected? I need to know so a big favour - please someone with IE8 go to the website "Marthascloset.co.uk" and place any item in the basket and try to confirm it. Does it go back to zero price? (don't go any further). Many thanks to anyone who will help - I know it sounds crazy but this is a genuine request - everyone I know seems to be on Win XP and that works fine.
Thanks - Graham

Preferred Solution: Enable protected mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there
WHY MS do you have to make Enable protected mode an all or nothing setting

I have a Media server that needs to open but this fails unless I turn OFF enable protected mode
All I need is for this site (local host at to be an exception.

Anybody know if this is possible to do. (IE11 in Windows 8.1)

The program is actually Logitech Media server -- works fine normally until IE11 had this thing about Protected mode.

Before I found the trick I did all sorts of things like disabling IPV6 (registry entry needed) etc to no avail --kept getting couldn't access the site !!! (localhost !!!!).

If you really need to disable ipv6 in Windows 8 / 8.1 then do it this way

Techunboxed: How to Disable IPv6 in Windows 8

I've reset the system back to enabling ipv6 as well and switching off compatibility view for that site.

I am running IE 8 on Win 7 and have a problem accessing a site I am having developed. Problem is resolved by disenabling the protection above but I want to know if this is just my problem or if anyone else on Vista or Win7 encounters the same problem. I cannot expect customers to disenable. When I select an item for the shopping basket and press confirm the basket empties to zero. Please someone on one of the versions above have a go for me just as far as "confirm basket - no further!". Big ask I know. Thanks

I just did a reload and went to use IE7 and saw that the protected mode was Off.

I double clicked on it, lower right side of screen, and a Security box came up indicating that it was in the Protected Mode, with the upper Internet Icon being assigned to the setting.

I unchecked the box and clicked Apply and a couple warning boxes came up and I clicked OK on them. I then got off of IE7.

Later I came back to IE7 and went to the Security box again and clicked to Enable the Protected Mode. I then got off of IE7 and then later came back, I did not do a restart, and it still did not take. I am still in the Protected Mode: Off status.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get this change to stick?

Any inputs will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone !

Recently I discovered that Windows has a built-in default disabled super admin account ( for those who did not know like me I provided a link , but there are many in the Internet , above )

First an "introduction":
I suppose , looking at your config ( if I am wrong please tell me ), that most of you use an admin account ( that one Windows give you when you log in the PC for the first time and you are the only user ).
I don't.
I use ( even if I am the only human user of my PCs) a standard user ( I mean a user without admin privileges ). And I created a local admin account (protected by pw) , so when I have to run something that requires admin privileges, UAC ask me that PW ( like the UAC that you see prompts in some videos , but I fill a pw instead of simply clicking Y/N).

As you can read also in the link I provided , that super is used usually to troubleshoot problems .
As using a standard account is an improvement in security ( MS suggest to use that , at least in Italy ) ..
I was wondering if it would be the same for super admin : so enable it and obviously protect it with a pw( like I protect the local admin with a pw request at every UAC prompt )
Actually I ask this out f curiosity , because I feel already pretty safe with my config .

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for reading

A:Super Admin: did you enable it ? ( pw protected )

I was once advised strongly against using super admin, except when you really need to. It gives super power also to the malware, not just to you.

I for one love a challenge.. ( to a point)
Have a newer computer here running Windows 7 with office 2010.  The user double clicks on an excel spreadsheet and up comes Excel as it should, and up comes the document.  All of the options are grayed out so it is either opening in read only mode or some sort of protected mode, I suspect the latter.
Here is the gotcha; if you move the document on the screen, or minimize it and maximize it, all is normal after that.  Currently scanning for VIRI but I don’t think I will find anything.

A:Document opens in read only mode protected mode until...

Sounds as though the document is not active until selected. But, this is only a guess on my part.

Under Security tab, "Enable Protected Mode" is ticked, but there is no message at the bottom of the screen indicating if it is on or off. Also the option to increase or derease font size is gone. Tried several times to uncheck and check the box to no advail. Thats why I think I.E. sucks. Too much garbage to mess with.

I too have that and have not solved it so I use a prog called Sandboxie. This from their website. Hope it's of interest but I'll follow this thread to see if there's another answer.

Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox
Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.
Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.

I am having trouble getting into a lot of websites for example I was looking at 'Australian Bush Food' site and wanted to click on the links to the recipes in the website, but nothing would happen, (this has happened on many other sites as well, I would click with the hand symbol, the status bar would process it and the website wouldn't come up not even a box saying error or anything), I think Protected mode or something stops it. I appreciate it, but it is getting in my way and is very annoying. Could someone help me please? Thankyou.

A:protected Mode

Hello Ken,

You can experiment with these settings yourself, but I have also included some standard settings. Open Internet Explorer, and in the top right hand corner, slowly look downwards until you come to a Tools dropdown. Click on this Tools followed by Internet Options. In this new window, click the Security tab. You can click on the Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites icons.

Standard Settings:

Internet: Medium-High, Protected Mode enabled.
Local Intranet: Medium-Low, Protected Mode disabled.
Trusted Sites: Medium, Protected Mode disabled.
Restricted Sites: High, Protected Mode enabled.

As I said earlier, these are guidelines, and you should experiment, particularly with the Protected Mode setting.

A:Internet Protected Mode

From the Microsoft website: "In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program."

The first thought that comes to mind is the browser reset function that restores IE7 back to facorty defauts. This tends to clear up alot of thoses things like this that cause strange problems. You can find the Reset in the Internet Options under the Advanced tab.

Looks like you're gonna stay a virgin, cause that ain't no high-end video card you got there.

Now on to the real topic. I'm not quite sure what you are saying as regards enabling VGA mode. All you need to do is make sure you disable any onboard vga chip in the bios (because you are using an add-on video card), and that's it. Your PC should boot and video should eminate from your card. Pressing F8 during boot simply allows you to select 'safe mode', which is normally used when you are experiencing problems such as misbehaving drivers. You shouldn't need to do this at all normally.

Hi. I am using windows Vista. At the bottom of the screen when I am in explorer an using the internet - it says Protected Mode: Off. It used to day 'On'. I am worried why it has changed. How can I switch it back on again - also what does it mean? what is it protecting me from. I have installed some plug-ins - maybe this is why?

Thank you

A:Internet Protected mode has changed by itself!

Go to Tools / Internet Options , Security Tab.

Click on each icon, then for each icon's page, checkmark Enable Protected Mode ....
It doesn't do any harm to enable protected mode for all types of sites.

IE classifies web sites you go to, and detects whether they are local on your hard drive, on your intranet etc. and turns Protected Mode on or off accordingly. After setting the checkmark as per above, it will always be on.

This is a problem that I have already partly solved, but I'm not completely happy with my solution.

I have recently upgraded from IE7 to IE8 on a laptop running Vista (SP2).

While IE would load my home page (Google) without any problems, just about any other page would take minutes to load - if at all.

Eventually, I fould that switching off "Protected Mode" on the Security options changed this. Now, pages load just as fast (or slow) as they did with IE7.

Q1: Despite all of the warnings from Microsoft, is there any "real" danger in switching Protected Mode off? (I am also running the full set of Internet Security apps from Computer Associates, if that makes any difference.)

Q2: Is there some other fix to my problem that does not involve disbling Protected Mode?

Thanks in advance

A:Problem with Vista - IE8 - Protected Mode

Q1: There's no real danger in switching off "Protected Mode", you just need to be careful on what you click on every website and avoid clicking on 'ads and pop ups'. I think that's the best protection you can do for your computer.

Q2: I find IE8 to be very slow, it might be because of it's features and how it looks but I preferred using Firefox and IE6/IE7. I also use ccleaner for my browser which I think is worth using and installing.

Hope this helps

I was just wondering what is enhance protect mode in IE11.
It is very annoying when it comes to opening PDF's using adobe reader.
If I try and open one I get a message box saying something about enhance protect mode. I click ok, it the site freezes and every time I try to go back onto the site it freezes and then I have to clear cache. if I click cancel then the browser shuts down completely.

This is really annoying. How can I view PDF in IE11 without this stupid enhance protect me

A:IE11 Enchanced Protected mode

The reason the message comes up is because with Enhanced Protected mode enabled, IE won't run add-ons that aren't 64-bit. For some reason, Adobe still don't provide a 64-bit add-on for Adobe Reader, therefore when you encounter a website that has a PDF file, IE will ask you if you want to disable Enhanced Protected Mode in order to run the 32-bit PDF reader plugin (AcroPDF.dll). When it does this, I think it switches to the 32-bit version of IE, instead of the 64-bit version.

Internet Explorer 'could' play better with PDF files by asking whether you want to save the PDF instead, but it doesn't. Maybe Microsoft are trying to 'encourage' Adobe to release a 64-bit plug-in? But I agree with you, PDF's are a PITA with IE running with Enhanced Protected Mode enabled, so the sooner Adobe release a 64-bit Reader/plugin the better.

I'm not sure why you're having problems with it freezing though, as it usually just shows a blank page with a grey crossed out circle if it can't open the PDF. Have you tried un-installing Adobe Reader and reinstalling the latest version (11.0.05)? Although, even if that cures the freezing problem, it will still prompt you to disable Enhanced Protected Mode to open PDF's.

The other option would be to right click on the PDF link and select 'save target as...', then save the PDF to your desktop before opening it. But you'll only be able to do this if there's an actual hyper-link. For example, some websites use buttons instead of links, and you can... Read more
