Explorer not loading any contents

Q: Explorer not loading any contents

When I open the libraries from the taskbar, the icons for documents, pictures, music, etc. are not visible. The tree that should appear on the left pane also doesn't load. Just 'Libraries' is visible in the pane, with a magnifying glass moving on its icon. The same thing happens when I open My Computer from the start menu. Just keeps on loading, nothing appears. Icons are blank (white). I have attached the image.

Before all of this happened, I was trying to access a folder on my desktop, and a .wav file inside was crashing windows media player. That folder's contents were also taking too long too load. To fix that, I ran disk cleanup, registry & traces cleanup and also ran the Disk Defragmenter. After defrag, I encountered the above problem. Any help on how to fix this ?

Preferred Solution: Explorer not loading any contents

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have a System Restore point dated before the problem occurred? If so, restore to that point and see if the problem persists.
System Restore

Also run an sfc/scannow a couple of times in an elevated command prompt. The defrag may have corrupted some files to cause the problem.

I used to be able to search the contents of WordPerfect files (*.wpd) in Windows Explorer by just pressing Windows Key + F, but now the only files that show up are Microsoft Word documents and Adobe Acrobat files.

How can I search the contents of WordPerfect files in Windows Explorer?

I've exhausted all of my efforts with Corel directly, their threads are locked and/or require "special access" to post. I really need this question answered and I don't know where else to turn...

Thanks guys.

I've had this problem for quite some time, and never bothered with it, because it wasn't crippling the use of my computer. But I'm trying to clean up my computer, and I want to try to tackle this now.

My problem is that I can't view things in windows explorer. When I open up certain folders (c, windows, temporary internet files, etc), it ends up looking like this with only the top row of folders visible:

I can access the folders directly through the address bar, or I can scroll through them with the arrow keys (beneath the field of vision) and the name will show up at the top. But I still can't view them. Many of my folders are fine, so I'm not sure why these ones are like this.

Someone told me it had something to do with my registry, but I hesitate to go mucking about in there unless I know what I'm doing.

help? anyone?

So here's the issue. Explorer locks certain folders so that they can't be deleted.

(I get the same problem on all subfolders in this folder and with quite a few other folders located elsewhere)

I browse to a folder name "Digital Detective" and open then close it. It's a subfolder within a folder named "Toolbox 2" located on my Desktop. This folder - "Toolbox 2" is also included in Libraries. If I open then close the folder it remains locked by Explorer for some time but eventually the lock will be released. I browse to the folder using the following file path:

"C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\Toolbox 2"

Having closed the folder it will remain locked and the only way to unlock it without using unlocking software is to close the handle:

Although sometimes the lock will be released after some time. I haven't managed to work out exactly why or when the lock gets released.

If I browse to and then open/ close the same folder via the following file path:

"Libraries\Toolbox 2"

- Explorer doesn't lock it.

I get the same issue with folders on another partition where I keep downloads and some other stuff but nothing on that partition is included in any library.

The strange thing is that if I use another file manager like Q-Dir I can delete these files without any problems at all.

Any ideas?

A:Explorer locks certain folders and contents

I'd be wondering if maybe Digital Detective is not causing the problem? The Q-Dir program may not be on DDs radar, isn't bothering it.

I've seen a lot of threads about Libraries, but can't find one that addresses (in a way I can understand) my problem. I can navigate to a given folder, say "My Pictures" either through my user name or through "Documents/My Pictures" The two methods show different content for the folder. This is driving me batty, as I have to go back and forth to find particular files. I have even tried downloading replacement software for Windows Explorer, and still have this problem. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but the way my brain works, a file should be in one place (which I understand it is) and found in one way. Can these multiple routes be eliminated?

Hi PR,

Yes, it could be indexing, but it could also be fragmentation - have you defragmented the disk recently?

What sort of files do you keep on the WDC - anything excessively large?

This is a little unusual request and not exactly what it sounds like. Take my music folder, in this instance. I have multiple folders dedicated to each artist that composed the song. So, for example, a song by Group 1 will be in a different file location than a song by Group 2. Here's an example:

My goal is to, in any way possible, find some way to view all of these files in Windows Explorer without having to keep them all in the same folder (file location). I'm trying to do this because, sometimes, I want to organize all of my music by a certain tag (such as Rating, Bitrate, Genre or Mood). However, I don't want to put them all into one folder (thus changing their file location) because then, whenever I need to reference specific songs for an application or just when I'm looking for a specific song rather than trying to organize them by a certain tag, keeping them all in one folder becomes miserable (since I have THOUSANDS of songs).
I tried using a library file, but I obtained the following result:

However, as you'll notice, they're separated by folder. No matter what tag I decide to organize them by (as you can see "Contributing Artists" and "Album" tags to the side) they'll still stay confined to their respective folders. I just want some way to view all of my files in one list and be able to organize them all by various tags without having to keep them all in the same folder (in Windows 8.1 Explorer). That's all there is to it, and... Read more

A:Combining Folder Contents in Windows Explorer

find some way to view all of these files in Windows Explorer without having to keep them all in the same folder (file location).

You want to create a new folder, name it whatever you would like. This is the folder where you will be able to view all of these files. Go to the folder where some of your files are, select them all>right click>create a shortcut. The new shortcuts will be created in the same folder. Move these shortcuts to the recently new folder we created.Repeat step 2 with your other files.Add your new folder to Windows Favorites or Libraries if you chose to.
The files will remain in the same location that you currently have them, but now you have a folder with shortcuts that will give you the illusion of having all the files in one place. There are media players that will do a better job at creating or organizing all of your music via bpm, artist, genre. If you want to do this in Windows Explorer though this is one way to do it.

I am unable to create folders in, modify the contents of, copy from, or paste into OneDrive via the explorer ribbon. The options cannot be selected. I recently (about a week ago) changed the location of my OneDrive folder, which I assume is what has upset it. I have not noticed any problems with OneDrive in this period, I can open and save files, I can copy and paste using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, and create new folders via the right-click menu without issue, just not via the ribbon. I assumed this was a permissions problem and gave 'Authenticated Users' and then 'Users' 'Full Control' of the OneDrive folder, but this has made no difference. What could be wrong?

I have a drive at work that is shared by many people. Within it are many folders to organize all the files. At times it is difficult to locate certain files; even using Explorer search becuase the file name may not be known.

What I would like to do is have a "table of contents" document or program to open that displays all the files, showing their folder location, and a link to that file.

I was able to do this somewhat in Excel but with 3,000+ files, doing so manually would be painstakingly difficult and time consuming.

It would be perfect if it was updated automatically, as these files change on a daily basis; adding new files and deleting old ones.

Is this possible? What would be the best program for it? Access?

Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

When I attempt to view a specific folder's contents in Windows Explorer, it appears to be stuck in a loop and does not show the contents. The scroll-bar on the right flashes non-stop. This only started today.

If I rename the folder, the problem goes away and I can view the folder content.

If I then rename the folder back to what it was before, the problem returns.

This issue also occurs with the same specific folder, if I boot into Safe-Mode (which would seem to rule out it being a 3rd-party software conflict issue).

If I login using a different user account the problem does not occur (so it seems to be an issue
with the user account).

The problem does not occur if I map a drive from a second computer and view the folder contents.

The problem doesn't occur when I use the Save As function to save another file to that specific folder.

I have performed an extended memory check, along with running "chkdsk /R" with no change in behavior.

Any helpful tips on getting to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. I did find a reference to someone else having the same issues in a different forum (from Dec 2011); however, no help was forthcoming.

A:Windows Explorer stopped showing folder contents

I used the following procedure which cleared up the folder content display loop preventing Windows Explorer from showing the folder contents:In the Tree Pane of Windows Explorer, I highlighted the problem folder
Activated the Menu Bar via Organize | Layout
On the menu bar I used View | Customize this folder...Selected General Items for the Optimize this folder for option

I applied the change and the folder contents once again became viewable (no slider bar flashing).
Changing the Optimize option back to Pictures still allowed the folder contents to be viewed.

One particular folder on my hard drive has become inaccessible - when I open it with Windows Explorer, the slider bar on the far right flashes into and out of existance and the folder contents number alternates between 190 and 0. No folder contents are displayed - the green progress bar very slowly creeps up but doesn't get anywhere near completion even after several hours.
At first I suspected a malware problem (I use the folder as a temporary store for internet downloads - pics and vids), but I've run a full system scan with MSE and with Spybot S&D using the latest definitions, I've scanned the offending folder with both apps, and downloaded and run Microsoft Safety Scanner, all of which have failed to detect a problem. So I'm thinking this is some kind of WE filing error? But I don't seem to have a utility that can detect/fix such a problem. I have Revo Uninstaller, which gives me the option to uninstall the folder, but that will presumably lose all the data within it.

I am not a 100% on how I managed this but here were my last steps:
- changed the host file in c\windows\system32\drivers\etc
- rebooted computer
- received system errors, so I ran a HDD defragmenter
- I then tried to access a file in c\program files but could not find it, but it mysteriously felt like I was in the c\windows directory. So I looked in c\windows and found the file I was previously looking for in c\program files.

The other problem is that any file or program that is rooted in those folders gives me an error message reading "location is unavailable" whenever I try to access it.

Needless to say, My computer is JACKED and I would appreciate and help on this.

If this is at all confusing just ask and i will try to explain it better

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a

and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Put a shortcut to Explorer.exe in your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder. Explorer will be forced to launch automatically when anyone logs in.

Do you have a Windows cd?

If so then place it in the drive and run sfc /scannow

Hopefully it will repair any corrupt files.

I have a computer that only loads to wallpaper and mouse pointer. The desktop icons and task bar are not visible. I can hit control, alt, del and look at the processes and applications running and explorer.exe is not listed. I can see the contents of the hard drive by telling it I want to open a new application. I think the computer has infections, but I can't get any of the anti-virus or spyware removal programs to load because of explorer.exe not running. I have tried to start it manually, and I get the following error: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I have tried in normal mode and in safe mode, both with the same results. Safe mode boots the same as normal mode. In both boot methods, I am logging in as admin. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using a custom PC, running Windows XP Pro. I was having some issues with viruses, due to some websites my roommate was looking at. I eventually found the majority of the harmful ones, but when I came across a certain trojan, it infected a lot more than I had knowledge of.

My anti-virus detected it injecting itself into Internet Explorer. I found the virus, and deleted it successfully... So I had thought.

After a reboot, I tried opening IE, and my firewall caught the same virus, but this time it was an infected registry key. So I blocked it... But as soon as I did, it acted as though I had no internet connection. And then another attack came, and I blocked it as well, but failed to find the virus my firewall was blocking...

I then rebooted my system again, and this time upon startup, explorer.exe would not load. I opened up Task Manager, and tried to start it manually. It says that the file could not be found. Then I clicked on New Task again, and browsed for explorer.exe in the Windows folder, and it was in fact there.

So I grabbed my XP cd, and re-installed without reformatting, but it didn't solve anything. Any ideas? I'm trying to avoid reformatting, but I'm beginning to think that it might be neccessary...

Please download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

I have been having trouble with Explorer.exe fully loading at startup. I can get it to load eventually through cmd. Also, when I go into task manager it doesn't show what processes are my login and which are system anymore. Windows update wont load and I think I have the redirect thing too. If I click a link it redirects me from google, but if I open in a new window it takes me to the correct place. I have provided the logs, please let me know if there is anything else you need. I am selling this computer to a friend so I'm not worried about backing up data files. Thanks

When I launch file explorer in Windows 8.1 A Green Bar appears in the address bar and moves from left to right. Depending upon which folder I am in and whether or not I am accessing another disk drive this green bar moves fast or slow. When I am accessing a network drive it moves VERY slow and I have to wait 30 seconds to see the contents of the drive. How do I turn this feature off? Are there other ways of speeding up windows explorer loading?

A:Speed up explorer loading.

Things to try:

1. Disable the Windows Search sevice via running services.msc and finding/disabling the service
(Caution: Metro search capabilities will be affected)

2. Rebuild your Search Index via Control Panel > Indexing Options
(not required if item 1. was done)

3. Uncheck to box in the pcture below for the drive in question
(note this will take some time to complete)

Since I do not use the Metro Search (I use explorer search only), I have elected to implement 1. and 3. on my PC and 2. takes care of itself. Hope this helps.
Good luck,

Internet Explorer has been behaving strangely. Mostf the time I try to open it, it just locks up until I Ctrl/Alt/Del out of it and close it down. While this is happening (which takes ages) the CPU Usage is shown at 100%. It's not been bothering me too much as I tend to use Firefox more but the kids use IE and it's frustrating for them. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Are you able to boot the laptop into Safe Mode? If so try running a System Restore

If unable to run a System Restore boot back into the Advanced Boot Options (Pressing F8 at the Dell logo)

and choose the option to Repair your computer.
