Preferred Solution: suddenly missing control panel & recycle bin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not sure what this means: "after cleaned something".

Try using a restore point that was taken before you "cleaned something".

Welcome to TSG....

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

For all of these things (and maybe others) the side "area" on the left side is gone... If you don't know what I'm talking about, open up recycle bin and look on the left side where it says stuff like "empty the recycle bin" and "restore item". I can't use these things if I dont have these explorer bars that are supposed to always be on the left side of the window. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Thanks

I can't open the recycle bin or the control panel windows, they just hang and windows task manager shows them as not responding. I've rebooted from cold but still the same.

Most programs will run, although a couple seize up when doing certain set up preceedures which must obviously use whatever is jamming it.

I'm running win2000.

Hi I recently got a new laptop: HP Pavilion dv6-6b12ed

I have a Control panel from Intel where I could change the colors of my screen and other stuff, but I can't get it to open!

Here's my weird problem: It shows in the system tray but when I click it I see this:
http://i42.tinypic.com/mn2qki.png

When I try to click on it, or anywhere else, it disappears and the program won't open.
I've even tried ALL methods in this following link: Graphics — How to open the Intel? Graphics Properties window

I think the problem will be solved if I can re-install the driver, but I've no idea what to (un)install.

Help and advice would be appreciated.
If you need any additional info on my system specs, just ask me or look up my laptop specs.. .

A:Can't open Intel Extreme graphics control panel suddenly

Okay... I download a driver from Intel site, and it has been fixed BUT...
I can't switch to my HD 6770M Graphics card, instead of the Intel HD 3000 Graphics card. I Used to have a AMD Optimus thing but it's gone now! I get a Catalyst Control Panel with limited options now instead.

So I've done a system restore for time being, if anyone could explain to me how to fix all this crap.. It would be appreciated.

When going to Start, Run, Control.exe, I received an error message that this action was only allowed by administrators. I am the administrator.
I found on this site info to run SDfix and Smitfraud. The pop up dialog box is now gone, but the control panel is still missing and I still get the access rights error message.

Hello DReeves,NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again! Please download SmitfraudFix Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. TweakUI, which is part of Microsoft's power toys might allow you to get your Control Panel Back, but because of the proper.exe missing, it leads me to believe that this is a virus issue, for which you need to read these directions and post a log in a appropriate section.

I've seen this problem in a few posts already so it might be that there is a solution already, if not, post a log in the highjack this section and someone will get to it shortly.

Are you logged in as an Administrator user or as a limited user? If not log in as as admin user and change your profile to be an admin. If you think you're an admin, boot into Safe Mode (press F8 at bootup) and log in as the Built in Administrator, not your user account. If you didn't set a password for the admin account, leave it blank. Here go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords. Makes sure your user account is an admin. If it is, then create a new user account with admin rights restart the computer in normal mode and log in as that user. If you can access Control Panel, then go to C:\Documents and Settings and oprn up your old user profile and copy the files from your old user account to the new user account.

Arggg my control panel is completely missing after having a few viruses on my laptop. Thankfully things are back to normal with the viruses removed, save for the fact that my control panel is gone! I've had a look on the internet for solutions, but usually they entail posting specific HijackThis Logs or something along those lines. Can anyone help pointing me in the right direction of what to download to get these logs and then help rectify this problem?

All help is much appreciated!!!

My friend does not know how he did this, but his Control Panel is missing! Now, he has all these pop-ups and stuff making it almost impossible to do anything. How does one recover the Control Panel? He cannot access anything anymore because he must contact his system administrator! I did suggest that maybe we could set it back to prior to losing his Control Panel, but was hoping I would not have to resort to that. HELP!
Plus, now is desktop has some kind of symbol and everything is in RED saying YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER and to download privacy protection software now!! AND, he keeps getting all these pop-ups (even though he has all his blockers on) telling him to download this or that because this or that virus, malware, worm, whatever is attacking his computer.

Thanks to my teenagers constant internet surfing I've contacted some sort of virus. I work on a computer all day and have spent every evening til the wee hours of the morning trying to fix this computer. Not to mention the money I've spent on Spyware and Computer fix programs. I ran XoftSpySE and RegCure through all the scans and repairs. Only to have the same amount of access which is no CD Player I had installed a new one and the computer doesn't recognize it. I have no add hardware because of no control panel and no System capabilities because my computer doesn't recognize me as the Administrator. I was in another Blog that mentioned going into regetit.exe or something like that and deleting no files, but that didn't do anything. Can someone help before I go insane?

A:Control Panel Missing

Firstly. Don't touch the registry without knowing EXACTLY what you are doing. And NEVER alter the registry without performing a registry backup.

you can do this via: start>run>regedit>file>export>save as

You say you have a virus, but you have performed "comprehensive" virus scan. This leads me to believe you have system files missing.

This will be EXTREMELY difficult to trouble shoot without administrator access. so thats first.

right click "my computer">manage>local users and groups>users>click administrator>set password.

If this works you should have admin access. Let me know how that went and ill take it from there.

I have a missing control panel. Not there. Did search and no control panel.

Suddenly I have no internet via hard wire or wireless in home or office. I get a not connected message. This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.

I purchased from Dell 10/10... can I still get support from Dell?

Can I reinstall control panel only from windows 7 disk?

Thanks

A:Missing control panel

Hi and welcome to SevenForums.

I take it that something has changed recently resulting in the loss of control panel and no internet?

Have you tried System Restore ?

I'm not sure on Dell's policy's but I'd say you would get at least 1 year warranty.

I have some malware from files I've downloaded. It created a fake "scan for spyware now!" popups that I can't get rid of. One is called scprot4.exe in c:\Program Files\SecCenter\, and it won't let me delete it. And the big problem is that I can't access my Control Panel. It's mising from the start menu, and when I tried to access it from a link (by attempting to delete a shortcut that was still attached to an installed program) it said: "Restrictions. This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I was cleaning viruses and spyware off a customer's computer and after that was completed, I noticed that the was no way to access the control panel. I am not sure if this occurred before or after the scans. Anyway, all the links on the Start button are removed. I can't access it through My Computer or Windows Explorer. Does anyone have any idea how I can get it back for them without having to restore their system? I have never seen this one so I am completely stumped.

You can start CONTROL PANEL at the RUN line by typing: CONTROL.EXE

If you can get to Microsoft's site, go here:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
and download the TWEAKUI app. It will help repair your missing Control Panel link.

About a few month ago, I've recently encountered a virus that stopped my CMD and Control Panel. It says a message like "Control Panel is missing" when I open the CP. As for CMD, I need to run "command prompt" to get the DOS box, but all the functions and commands are not working. ComboFix.exe doesnt work for me either, since ComboFix uses DOS Box. (Green bar finishes loading, then nothing happens)

DDS.scr uses DOS box, doesn't work

The GMER also has a problem

Stops there every time. If I use the settings shown in the First Time User tutorial, gives same error, except Shadow2

I've attached my logs for HJT, Random/Random, and ReelRepeal. Please review it for me, thanks!

Hi

I am using Windows XP (5.1 Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254: service pack 2) on my laptop and early this week i started only to realize I did not have the log off / shutdown bar and the control panel link.

I Have researched on the web, tried out a few fixes (Hijack this, Spybot and even downloaded tweakui.exe). I do not seem to be getting anywhere. Will I have to re-install the computer?

Its the first time i am expriencing such a problem. I can see the data on the computer and Msoffice appears to be running fine. However Control panel is a significant cog on the day-to-day running of the computer.
Can someone please help me out ?

A:Control panel missing in XP

Hi kalulu and welcome to TSF !

Do you have an XP install disk or a recovery CD ? What's the brand and model of this laptop ?

Run a check disk : start => run => chkdsk c: /F /R (if c is the volume letter that corresponds to your system drive). Answer no when it asks to unmount the volume then yes to schedule the test at next restart and reboot the laptop. You can use the task manager (press ctrl+atl+del) to access the shutdown command.

Create the recovery disks if you have none, check whether there's an i386 folder on the root of the CD and if there is then go to start => run and type sfc /scannow. This should replace missing or corrupt system files with a good copy. It will ask you for the CD if it can't find a backup of the file on your drive. If sfc asked for the CD and the recovery disk you have didn't work then find a friend who has an XP CD that's the same version as what you're using (Home SP2 if you're using XP Home SP2) and redo the sfc scan.

The problem may also lie in the registry. Go to start => run and navigate to the following entries :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
=> is there an entry called Start_ShowControlPanel and what's its value ? If it's different from 2 then set it to 2.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
=> in each location is there an entry call... Read more

Hi! A friend of mine has 2 teenage boys sharing her computer with her. Unfortunately, they have visited/downloaded things they should not.

Issues:
* Cannot seem to find Control Panel as user Admin
* User Administrator is only a login option in Safe Mode, but also can not find Control Panel and has NO Password (need to set that somehow, right?)
* Can not change the clock (1 hour behind, getting error window "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this compoter. Please contact your system administrator." twice)

I used SuperAntiSpyware to quarantine a boatload of things (3 memory, 181 registry, 185 files) and I used SmitFraudFix to scan and fix several things. I still have the issues above.

I have not connected her PC to the internet yet. If I add her to my router, is it possible for her PC to infect my other PCs? I have downloaded things (like the tools above and HiJackThis) to a thumbdrive to put on her PC while not connected to the net. Is it safe to give her an IP address on my lan?

i read another post on this and the moderator told them to download TrendMicro Hijackythis and copy and paste the Hijackthis log. i didn't want to use the instructions given to that user in case i have a different virus/problem.

my anti-virus had run out. now have anti-virus installed and it has removed most viruses but pc still has a few problems. have pasted the log below.

any help you can give would be appreciated!!

I am unable to find my Control Panel today. I see the words control panel when I right click on the menu after clicking on the start button. But nothing happens. It does not open. I have been researching it all day but to no avail. I am using an Acer laptop and I updated to Windows 10 last July. I have had this control panel until today. Can someone help me to restore it? Thanks so much.

A:Missing control panel

Have you tried Start
Left Click
Click All Apps
Scroll down to
Windows System
Clink to Open it
Click Control Panel and it will open
Also Right Clink
This you can then Pin To Start
Then you can open it that way
Also you can pin it to Task Bar as well
That way you can probably get your Control Panel working again

Also have you tried System Restore and find a date when it was working ok
If none of this works then follow this link
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
