Thinkpad Yoga spill advice

Q: Thinkpad Yoga spill advice

My 1.5 years old sun spill half of a glass, with Coca Cola inside on ThinkPad Yoga keyboard.I did turn it upside down, went to BIOS and disconnect battery power. Yoga was functional whole time and did not have any problems with liquid in keyboard. I did pull bottom bezel and disconnect battery and left yoga upside down in rice until morning.I was terrified and angry on myself why I did not stick to T series with water drain keyboard. In morning I powered it up, and everything was OK, except sticky keyboard keys (Why I?m drinking Cola, water is so much better and healthierJ)I was thinking to disassembly whole thing and clean keyboard, but this is not a simple job according to hardware maintenance manual. Then I tried to clean keyboard with compressed air, and it helped, but not at once. I spent 3 packs of air to get back key press feel like it was before spill (Few nights spray it and left it upside down). Finally advice:If you have ThinkPad Yoga and work at home with little kids around, have prepared compressed air bottle. If I was clever enough to clean keyboard before Cola dried I think I would be fairly better and easier to clean keyboard.God job Lenovo for water resistant ThinkPad Yoga keyboard! Now fix OneLink dock port flapping issue JRegards!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi community! Yesterday, I accidentally spilled coffee (no sugar and only a little bit of milk) in my ThinkPad T430.it was plugged in the charger, and as soon as I spilled coffee the computer shut down (the coffee reached the bottom of the screen)I took off the battery and the keyboard, cleaned a bit and now the computer is drying.when I opened there was coffee around but apparently it didn't reach the mother board. I am almost sure it won't turn on again due to the fact it instantly shut down when the coffee touched the keyboard. However, I Hope you can give me more positive views on my computer's situation? Is there any chance to save it?  ThanksNymsai

I have a 17-day old new Thinkpad E560.  Spilled about a teaspoon of white wine on the keyboard when I jostled the glass (it didn't tip over).  Keyboard started acting flaky, spontaneously producing long series of a's and 1's.   While I couldn't see any evidence of remaining liquid after dabbing up what small amount was evident, I figured a trickle may have seeped inside, and let it dry overnight. 24 hours I tried again, and while there was no erratic behavior, about a third of the keys -- while they felt normal -- were non-functional. I recalled that the Lenovo specs for this model say it has a Spill Resistant keyboard.  But I see no open holes on the back of the case.  And I pulled out the keyboard and see it has plastic across its entire back.  Clearly this isn't a Spill Resistant keyboard.  How can the Lenovo specs, and many resellers' advertising, tout that it *is* Spill Resistant?

A couple days ago, I accidentally spilled a very small amount of iced tea on my Yoga 920 keyboard while studying for an exam. I immediately wiped the keyboard off and shut the laptop down. I then stupidly decided to turn the laptop back on (before I learned this was a HUGE no-no), and the screen began spazzing out. So i shut it back off, opened it slightly, and set it upside down with a fan pointed on it to continue drying it out for the rest of the night. The next morning, I tried turning it on again, and thankfully it did. Everything seems to be working fine except for a couple things - when I flip my laptop into tablet mode, the prompt in the lower right hand corner that is supposed to ask me if i want to switch to tablet mode does not appear anymore. Also, when i flip the laptop around to take notes, the keyboard does not lock and I end up accidentally typing unwanted random characters while writing with the stylus. Another small problem I now have is the space bar seems to have residue under it. It just doesn't feel the same when I hit it.

A:Yoga 920 Spill. Any help would be appreciated!!

Tea is both acidic and conductive so the problems may get worse.  It is best to disassemble completely and clean everything that was hit with pure alcohol.  If you are lucky, only the keynoard/touchpad surface was affected.  They will likely need to be replaced.

Yesterday, I accidently droped just little water on the keyboard. It remained working for a while before the whole keyboard froze and stopped working at all, the strange thing was the beeping that the laptop keeps doing on one second interval, it does not stop beeping unless you press the shut down. The strange thing is that the laptop all working except the keyboard, and this beeping every second that never stops. It is like a blood rate device voice that you hear at the ICU if you are sitting beside a patient. My question is there a way to avoid replacing the keyboard as it seems it is a keyboard issue if I am not wrong? Or should I try to open it and dry it in some way then connect it again and see if this beeps goes and if the keyboard returns to life again? Thank you for the help.

My Yoga 12 keyboard was ruined due to spill and now won't work at all. But I need to press ESC, and I cannot... I need to access BIOS as the laptop is asking for a correct date due to complete disassembly and removal of CMOS battery. An external USB keyboard doesn't work during bootup... BIOS version is 1.24. If I hold F1 on the built-in keyboard prior to powering up, the system enters BIOS. After that, no response. The keys are stuck. I even tried hot-removing the keyboard cable from the motherboard when having entered BIOS and then plugging in a USB keyboard. Tried both USB ports to no avail ./ I just need to be able to press ESC to bypass the date check -- the laptop works otherwise. I'll buy a new built-in keyboard, but would love to hear alternative solutions in the meanwhile. Is Fast Boot affecting USB keyboard combatibility? Any secret key combos I could use to reset the BIOS? Would plugging the laptop into a dock help (connecting a USB keyboard onto the dock)? PS: Why on earth won't external keyboards work during bootup on this laptop?? .(

About 48 hours ago, I spilled coffee (w/ cream and sugar) on my keyboard while the power was on. I immediately turned off the laptop, wiped it dow with napkins, and turned to laptop upside down to enable draining. This model laptop has an internal battery for those unfamiliar, so I unfortunately could not remove that.  I left the laptop in a position for where air could flow through it (aided be a fan), and left it in such a way for ~40 hours.  This morning, I finally gained access to laptop tools, so that I could disassemble the the laptop and clean what I could with 91% isopropyl alcohol (not the ideal 99% I see recommended, but I don't think this is a major issue). There was residue visible on the metal beneath the keyboard, as well as a small amount on the battery. All of which was cleaned off with cotton ear swabs dipped in a bit of that rubbing alcohol. I reassembled the laptop, gave it a couple hours to let the small amount of rubbing alcohol to dry off, and tried booting up. Fans spin loudly for ~30 seconds, screen remains blank, no beeps or whatever emit from the laptop, and the power light remains on w/out blinking. The fans and laptop itself turned off after that 30 second period. I then tried hitting the "Novo Button" or "One Key Rescue", and this resulted in a blue menu popping up allowing me to start laptop in one of 4 modes. I tried clicking up or down to scroll through options, however those keys didn't work. Clicked "Enter" ... Read more

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I wonder if anyone have a solution to this problem. It does not make  sense to have to connect the Thunderbold AND the AC power to the Thinkpad, it should be just ONE Thunderbold cord. 1. My power brick is 135W, 20V-6.75A2. I am connecting the Thunderbolt to throuogh the port on the back of the dock.3. I have went to BIOS  and under power section, "disable the battary for technical service" and pwered it back on. None of the above solutions worked.

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

I have two staff members with different Yoga models, but with the same pen issue. Say, for instance, OneNote is open. The pen doesn't draw or write, but it can select and still be recognized. When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. I leave it in the laptop slot for charging for more than a day and it gives me only a few minutes of usage. As per the user guide, it should be 80% charge in 15 seconds and 100% after 5 minutes. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

A:Thinkpad yoga 460 - Thinkpad Pen Pro not charging ...

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Just curious, why is the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga I7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, FHD about $1,000 more than the similarly equipped commercial Lenovo 910?

Is it the ThinkPad brand name? The eraser nubbin? The 2 combined?

Just curious.

I've got a friend who needs a new laptop. She likes the touch/fold aspect of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga. Do you all think she would be happy with the commercial Yoga 910?

Any real reason to get the new plain FHD ThinkPad X1 Yoga instead of the similarly equipped commercial Yoga available at Best Buy besides spending an extra $1000 for the ThinkPad brand name?

I've owned 6 various ThinkPads since 2011 FWIW. I get it, they're cream of the crop. But I kinda got sticker shock when I just priced out a plain FHD (and we need nothing more) X1 Yoga. About  $2,800, wow!

A:Why is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga $1,000 more than a similar Yoga 910?

@Jelks, The biggest difference I see between the X1 Yoga (2nd) and the Yoga 910 is active pen support which seems to be missing from the 910. You could use a capacitive stylus, but expect fingertip resolution, not pinpoint, and no pressure-sensitivity. Fewer USB ports: no HDMI or MicroSD; no Thunderbolt. No TPM module, if you need to store encrypted creditials, e.g., for BitLocker. Not sure about battery life; they claim up to 9 hours of local video for the 910 vs. up to 15 of MobileMark for the X1. Not an apple-to-apple comparison. You're not going to get the (soon to be patched, at least for now) security hole that is Intel's vPro management tech. You may not get Windows 10 Pro, possibly just Home (but you could always give Microsoft the money to upgrade if you need BitLocker or Remote Access). You're not going to get all the "mil-spec" design and testing etc, but if it's a personal machine, you're probably going to avoid abusing it. As you suggest, the "wave" keyboard -- including the trackpoint "eraser nubbin" -- is definitely going to be more expensive on the ThinkPad than the plain Yoga keyboard. I used two generations of ThinkPads (T61p and W520), but about 3 years ago I switched to a Dell XPS 13. A year or so ago, I ordered a X1 Yoga 1st gen for my wife and she likes it very much, so I am pretty familiar with the design and capabilities. TLDR: I think most people would be happy with the 910 vs. X1 unless they want the active pen. Als... Hi all. New to the forum but have a quick question on the thinkpad t470s. I am looking to upgrade the ram from the 8 gig currently in it and replce the 4 gig module with a 16 gig one to max it out. Can anyone give me pointers on which module i should be buying for the 16 gig module. I was hoping to find locally at best buy but unfortunately they do not have 16 gig modules. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hello and welcome,

I've moved your post to the T-series forum.

Your subject says T470 but the message body says - and implies - T470s.  I think you already know that one module is soldered and one socketed, but just checking...

Both base specs say "2400MHz DDR4".  I'd be inclined to go to a reputable vendor's site (Crucial for instance - not pushing them...)  and use their memory finder for specifics.  In the hopefully unlikely event of compatibility issues you'd have that to fall back on for a return.

Probably not necessary, but it's not a bad idea to pull the specs of the soldered module and try to match those exactly.

Z.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

A:Need Advice on Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T470

Hi Loungepuppy,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

It depends upon your requirement ideally you will need a same kind (like frequency, type, size) of RAM in both slots to achieve a dual channel configuration.
Therefore, you can either install an 8GB stick to the existing configuration or go ahead with even 16GB stick aswell.

Edit- This system does support 32GB max 2400MHz DDR4 (source)

I hope the above information helped you.

I just bought a Thinkpad Yoga from Best Buy and upon opening, found that the pen pro included does not work. I'm on the most updated version of all the drivers, and the touch screen and multitouch with my hands still work. After taking an multimeter to measure the voltage of the pen, I found that the pen just wasn't charging. I'm a bit hesitant to check the voltage of the charging silo itself but my suspicion is that the pen is dead. Could this be a software problem? Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Should I return to pen and the laptop to bestbuy or just the pen? Or should this issue be brought to Lenovo instead?

A:Thinkpad Yoga 460 (Best Buy) - Thinkpad Pro Pen do...

I don't have a 460, but I do have a 260, which is a smaller, but VERY similar machine.  I had the same problem and I believe it is not the pen.  Before you do anything, you need to unplug the machine and disable the internal battery.  You do that by going into the BIOS and under the config tab, look under power.  There will be an option to disable the battery.  When this is selected, the machine will turn off.  The battery is re-enabled the next time you plug it in.  IF THE BATTERY IS NOT DISCONNECTED, YOU WILL CREATE A SHORT AND BLOW A IRREPLACEABLE FUSE ON THE MOTHERBOARD.  Remove the pen and look inside, where you will see 2 contacts.  My guess is that one or both got pushed back into the housing during manufacturing process.  You can take something fine and sharp like a needle and gently free them so they will pop back out.  Once I popped mine out, the pen charged very quickly and I never had another problem with it.

My 2 days old yoga 260 makes a ticking noise in the right hinge always when I open the notebook or move the screen open a little bit. It is irritating and I am concerned about the build quality of the hinge. What to do?

A:Thinkpad yoga 260

My hinges are quiet  and smooth, but they are tight and sturdy so that the screen is stable in any orientation.  I'm sorry, but without hearing or feeling yourem there is no way for me to say if yours are "normal", but it is common for a tight hinge to make a little noise when it begins a motion.

I intend to buy an X1 Yoga (IPS or OLED) for my business and connect it to my two Dell U2417H monitors. Looking at the Dell user guide, I see that you should be able to use one cable from the laptop and daisy chain the two monitors. The Dell user guide states that the PC/laptop graphics card must support "DP1.2 with MST transport". * Does the 1st gen X1 Yoga have DP1.2 with MST transport?* What about the 2nd gen X1 Yoga? Understand the mini DisplayPort has been deleted on the 2nd gen X1 Yoga and left only a HDMI and Thunderbolt connection. How would I achieve this daisy chain connection? Thanks
