Vista > Windows 7 Upgrade (file deletion problem)

Q: Vista > Windows 7 Upgrade (file deletion problem)

Hey all, I'm hoping there's a quick answer for this. I'll explain the situation and let me know what you guys think.

My friend recently had her computer upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. She used the Vista StickyNotes program to keep track of important information. I told her that this program wasn't intended for permanent information storage, but she liked it because it was simple. She upgraded her computer to Windows 7, and now her sticky notes are gone.

My question is this: Is there any way to retrieve those old sticky notes?

I told her in all honesty that I think they are gone unless she wants to pay big bucks to go to a forensic type agency that could pull the information off. I just need another opinion. I hope I'm wrong.

I also hope I gave enough information and explained the situation with enough detail.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Vista > Windows 7 Upgrade (file deletion problem)

In short, no. She might me able to recover them by using a tool like Undelete Plus, but unless she had a backup, they are gone. I am not sure about Undelete Plus, I got it when it was free, but now it costs, I think.

HI guys im having a serious problem with my computer. I tried to rename a file earlier and did. I changed the file extension accidentally, and as soon as it saved the problems started! A message popped up saying rundll32 has stopped working, then about 3 seconds later Windows explorer has stopped working. The messages keep just parrading on. I can not acces start menu bar, or anything related to windows explorer. I know this file has to be the problem but I cannot delete it!. Every program i use to try to get at the file explorer crashes and restarts and im back where i started. I need a way to delete this file because i basically cant use my computer!! I tried using command prompt but I dont know how to delete a file on the desktop using it. Your help would be appreciated! Thanks, Josh

A:Serious File Deletion Problem & Windows Explorer Crashes!

Hello ilovesd90macs and welcome,If Explorer crashes and you can't get to the start menu you can press CTRL+ALT+DEL this will bring up the Task Manager click New Task and type explorer.exe this will restart explorer. To delete the file, firstly, what is the file? is it a system file? Or is it a user created file?If you want to delete the file using command prompt. use the dir command to list all the directories in the location the prompt is pointing to. Then the cd command to change directory i.e cd Documents and settings. then the del command. i.e del random file.If the file refuses to go quietly then you can use Unlocker this tool will unlock the file from the process that is using the file and allow it to be deleted.

Last night I downloaded a movie file, and I am now unable to delete it. After I confirm that I want to send the file to the recycle bin, my computer becomes stuck on a message that reads: Recycling 1 Item 0 Bytes. The only way for me to rid myself of the message is to launch task manager & end the task.

This actually happened once before, about six months ago. That time I simply hid the file (and its related folder) so that I would no longer see it. However, with the current file, that is proving impossible. Any time I try to alter the file, including double clicking on the folder where the file is located, my entire computer freezes up until I manually reboot.

I searched online hoping there would be an easy fix. As a result I downloaded a couple of programs (DelInvFile + File Assassin) and attempted to remove the file + its folder. When both programs attempted to remove the file, they froze until I ended their task via task manager. I also attempted unsuccessfully to delete the file using the command prompt. At that point I remembered something important - I am not a Techguy. d

My computer seems to be working pretty well, as long as I do not attempt to access the file. But something is telling me that it would be better off gone.

Any information you could provide to help me remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Whenever I try to move a file to the recycle bin of any size it locks up my computer and takes about 20 seconds to move it successfully. Then again when I empty the recycle bin again another 20 second wait. It treats an empty file like it was a 20 GB monster file.

Another symptom is that it takes a while to rename files. For instance if I renamed a file I would type in the new name and hit enter, then it would lock everything up for about....yup, 20 seconds.

I've ran into this problem before and it was solved really simply with a minor solution I was able to do myself. This also has nothing to do with a full recycle bin or other minor things, I am computer savvy and I keep my system in excellent condition.

Hi guys,

My customer is trying to delete a game mod file that
he named "bad week no. 2" from a directory in program files. everytime we try to delete it we get a "disk is full" error... Its like the PC is trying to delete from a CD-ROM. The file has no postfix name (I.E. ".ini"), it just shows up as a "file" designation. It also will not open in notepad.

He has XP home and we have been able to delete other files in the directory. We also tried DOS method (with explorer.exe terminated) with no luck. The PC has not been updated from SP1 and has not been used at all on the internet so there are no virus issues.

Im wondering if the name has created some sort of a file-locking behaivior or if the RAID striping hardware is failing.

Thanks a lot guys.

The Recovery Console would be the best bet, but these may help. Be sure to run a chkdsk to be sure the file is not damaged or misrepresented in the volume bitmap.

As a result of a disastrous Windows 10 upgrade that had to be corrected by Windows Help techs doing re-installation my music was moved off to a local drive, then later back on to my computer. When Itunes was reinstalled had major issues such as duplicate files (perhaps due to playlists not transferring properly), Followed Apple tech advice and deleted duplicates, gave up on playlists and intended to rebuild. Overnight, however all my previous music seems to have disappeared (ITunes can't find it). That music was present yesterday cause I played it. Was primarily mp3 and CD imports. Probably a third of my library that was functioning properly yesterday is gone. mp4s and ITunes purchases all survived.

The reason I ask the question in this Win10 forum is Apple specifically told me today they would never delete and it is a Microsoft Windows 10 issue. Of course the senior tech I got to did not have good reason why, he simply said was something on my machine that was deleting particularly files like mp3s and CD imports.

I have had my PC (2012) checked out hardware wise and bios and looks OK to the local hardware folks. Installed a new harddrive just to be sure. Windows did not have issues when last installing and has run well although I have only MS apps, Google apps, and Itunes on the machine at this point.

Just checking if anyone has seen such an issue with Windows 10 elsewhere. and verifying that Apple is attempting to dodge. I'll remain open to answers!!

I changed ownership of my C:\ in order to change permissions, be able to audit, and delete files which are locked. Usually system files are locked and I ignore those when prompted that they cannot be changed without admin approval (even providing admin approval doesn't allow their modification). I'm wondering what I have to do to be able to make decisions on my own system? Does anyone know a good step by step guide? My old Windows installation is taking up 17 gigs on my hard drive and I have a 230g hard drive. Needless to say space is precious with the size of downloads/installations being what they are (games that are 20g, Windows updates that are 3g..). Thanks in advance.

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop. I got it late last summer with Vista and it ran fine. I just finished "upgrading" to Windows 7, and it mostly works. The only thing I can't get to work is the wireless adapter. I have checked several sources/programs, and they all indicate it has the latest driver.

When I click on the notification area icon, a list of available wireless networks comes up. When I click on the wireless network, a connect button shows. When I click on the connect button, a new window pops up titled connect to a network. The window says "Windows was unable to connect to [wireless network name]. There is a link for troubleshoot problems. When I click on that link, I get a new window that says troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

If I use a wired connection, it works fine.

There should be no need to check more than one place. Assuming it's an integrated adapter download the latest driver for your machine from HP's web site. If no Windows 7 driver exists use the Vista one. It would be even better if you also downloaded and installed the chipset drivers first.

I am trying to upgrade the operating system on my Toshiba L505-S6946 laptop from 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium to 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I've followed every step recommended by Toshiba, including first running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check for compatibility and then running the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant (with Toshiba-supplied update CD). After many components were uninstalled by the Assistant, including my wireless internet connection, the software would not allow continuation because a "Cyberlink Power Cinema for Toshiba Patch" installation failed. What a crock! So now I've lost several components, including wireless internet connection for my laptop. I am not happy. Anyone have any suggestions (other than contacting Toshiba support, which seems to be of little use). Dogg, where are you? I really need your help this time. Anybody, please help! By the way, I did realize that I needed to be connected to the internet for the update process, so I connected my laptop via an ethernet cable to my wired/wireless modem/router/ethernet switch combination gateway. Still no cigar.

Hello.

This topic has been discussed to death but still..
I have some major problems with upgrading Windows Vista, that I could not find any discussion about.

Here is the deal - I have a customer, that had Windows Vista (Slovenian, Home Premium) and bought Windows 7 for upgrade (also Slovenian, Ultimate). Naturally we ran the upgrade adviser and it checked out just fine - it did complain about some Power DVD program but I ignored that since I have upgraded before by others without problem. So the upgrade process began, it ran almost to the end when it suddenly, just before the end, resulted in error that said something about "unspecified or unknown error" and the installation should be ran again (and can not be continued). We tried to reboot without any luck - installation just keeps resuming - ending with the same error, also, it is impossible to run the upgrade again - because another one is in progress, I guess.

So I ask - how to finish the upgrade or, if able, to revert back to Vista - my customer NEEDS working system - he has many programs that are vital for his business and/or business continual. I know that he should back up his important files and such, but there are some accounting databases that could not be backed up so easily by him - and we are past that point now.
So please, any advice or suggestion on the proceedings would be welcomed and appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Everyone,

I am attempting to upgrade my Dell Studio 1555 laptop, which currently has 32 bit Windows Vista on it, to 64 bit Windows 7.

My problem is that after purchasing the Windows 7 Professional 64 bit version from Microsoft, not some other site, burning the .ISO file to a DVD-R and attempting to run the setup.exe file I keep getting an error message that states that this version of Windows is not compatible with the current version of Windows. I did some searching about this and discovered that I needed to change the BIOS order to have the CD/DVD drive checked first when booting up and then restart my computer and look for a "press any key" message to appear. I proceeded to do this and restart my computer, however no "press any key" message appeared and my laptop simply booted up like it has always done.

I know that the paragraph may be TLR so basically what is going on is that my computer is not booting from the CD and so I can not do the custom install that I would like.

I tried disabling the hard drive and forcing it to recognize the CD. However when doing this a message popped up that there was no OS recognized and therefore didn't boot.

I have checked and my laptop is able to run 64 bit on it so that is not the problem. I'm guessing that something was not burned correctly when I burned the CD or that the .ISO file is missing some key file that it needs to boot from the CD. Any help would be appreciated. Also if more info is needed ple... Read more

I have a home network running a PC and a laptop. The laptop operates on Vista and I recently upgraded the PC from XP to Windows 8. Before the upgrade I was able to quite successfully share a particular file between the PC and the laptop. I'm keen to share the same file again following the upgrade but so far I've had no luck and I find the Windows 8 help to be a touch confusing (that might be just me, of course), more aimed, it seems, at file sharing between computers running Windows 8.

I'd be very glad if somebody is able to offer any assistance or perhaps point me to some step by step instructions that might help resolve the problem.

Many thanks.

The directory has File1 all the way to File1000.

I don't want to manually go through 1,000 files to see if they are in the text file to delete them. I'm sure there is a really easy way to do this, maybe a program that can do it, or a simple command in ms dos?

I can't seem to determine if this is a fault of Vista or WLM itself, nowhere on the net can I seem to find anyone talking of this problem. In WLM, there are 2 ways to share files: you can drag and drop in a variety of places or you can use the menus to browse manually and share that way. I used to be able to do both. Now, however I can NOT drag and drop at ANY time in WLM. I CAN still use the menus and browse to share manually.
I have tried EVERYTHING I can possibly think of that could be blocking this from happening. I've scanned every last inch of WLM and Vista for things that could be related and I simply can't seem to pinpoint why I can't do it.
Also, I have already tried repairing WLM and uninstall/reinstall with no change in the issue. I am a minimalist when it comes to security, and do not use any anti-virus programs or 3rd party firewalls.

I have been lurking at bleepingcomputer for years, and the excellent info here has helped me solve a number of issues on my computers in the past. But this is the first time that I have not been able to find a solution here without actually asking a question, so here goes:

I have an install of XP Home Service Pack 3 running on a Dell D630 laptop, with the latest avast! Internet Security. Most everything works as it should, with no speed problems, suspicious network activity or difficulty running programs. However, recently I lost the ability to move or delete files in all folders on the hard drive. I can move and delete in Safe Mode, but have no control in normal mode. In normal mode I can open, create or modify files without a problem using a variety of programs, just not move or delete. The error I get is the 'Access Is Denied, Check to See if Hard Drive is Full Or Write Protected, and File Is Not In Use' message.

Also Microsoft update and Firefox update do not work, but avast and Malwarebytes do.

My logon has administrator status, and I have confirmed that I have ownership of the files, either as a user or administrator. I have tried reestablishing ownership through safe mode just to be sure. Suspecting my user profile to be corrupt, I have created a fresh one with the same results. I have run all the scans from avast, Malwarebytes, and MS Safety Scanner with no threats found.

But when I then try to delete the item in 'Downloads', it tells me the process is still open!

So; I thought I could simply go into the sys32 folder and delete the 1.tmp file by putting it in the trash can, as it obviously does not belong there....BUT it will not let me, if I try I get an error message telling me I do not have access or the disc is full even when I use the administrator level......so now I am completely at a loss and I do not understand.
I appreciate the sys32 is a windows folder but surely if some programme put the tmp folder in there then surely I should be able to delete it........

Can anybody show me a step by step way of deleteing it or do I have to forever get this error window every time I log on????

How do I clean all files that I deleted? My teenage friends were on the computer and added games from the I-net. Also they went to sites I do not want on this computer. It is a loaner from my boss. I do not want to return it to him with stuff like that on it. I know that the files remain. How do I erase them? I do want to format the HD.

I am looking for the correct DOS syntax to achieve the following:

In folder "C:\ABC":

1) Delete ALLA folders, including their content.
2) Delete any files that are in the root of "C:\ABC"

I have tried a combination of RMDIR and DEL but I am not managing to delete folders.
I can't find any examples of syntax online.

Any idea how to achieve this?

A:Help with DOS syntax for file deletion

Technically its not DOS, its a command shell. Have a look at this, Del Try del /? for a list of options.

I noticed something yesterday. In my music file there were files deleted completely and others were reorganized and mixed up. I didn't do it and no one else uses this computer. Immediately went on red alert and done scans with 3 different security programs and nothing but cookies. other files not effected. Is it a windows 7 thing or was I hacked?

I have PC Inspector program on my system for file recovery after they have been deleted. Can anybody tell if the deleted files that show up after a scan of the system with this software can be totally removed so that they don't show up on the next scan.

they might still show up as thats the function of the software. You could try shutting down the program first the try a deletion .

I have only user account in Win7 (which is an Admin account, named "Admin") now when I go to one of my backup drives (in this case "D:\") and attempt to delete certain directories it gives me

"Folder Access Denied - You Require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this folder"

it should be noted that im trying to delete a previous Win7 installation on a drive which isn't my main drive. (nuking the directories one by one, as i have other backed up data on the drive i dont want to interfere with)

I attempted to alter the permission for TrustedInstaller, allowing full access, but i continue to get the error.

Suggestions please?

Hello,

When I plug my WD Passport into my laptop and try to delete a folder I get an error saying I need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder.

I click continue but then I get "you require permission from administrator to make changes to this folder" and the only option is to try again or cancel.

I am an administrator and it doesn't matter which owner it is. Everyone has full control but I cannot delete this folder.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A:File Permissions Will Not Allow Deletion

Try downloading the "TakeOwnership" registry key and once its installed use the right click take ownership menu on the folder see if that works

Using Windows XP Pro, fully patched, on 2.8GHZ PIV, 512 Ram 120GB HDD

I have several questions.

1. Frequently I go to the 'Local Settings/Temp' folder in my user folder to delete the files there, as I have found that Disk Cleanup doesn't seem to know about that folder, and doesn't clean it up.
Q: Is there any way to add that location to Disk Cleanup's list of areas to clean out?

2. Many times when I go to the folder mentioned above, I want to highlight all of the files in the folder, and mass delete them. Naturally there are always a few which are "in use" and so the delete routine fails as soon as it reaches one of the "in use" files, and one has to then try and work around those.
Q: Is there a way to select a mass of files for deletion, and to have it simply ignore files in use, but continue and delete all of the rest of the files selected that are NOT in use?

Alternatively, is there a utility (preferrably freeware) which is available which will allow the selection of a group of files for deletion, and delete all possible files in the group, ignoring those which are "in use"?

3. Finally, is there an available utility, either in the OS, or other, which will allow one to select a file which is marked "in use" (as per above), and then target or identify the program or process which is "using" that file?

Thanks for your help

A vbs script should handle all the utility jobs you described. There are numerous sites that have sample VBS scripts where all you would need to do is look for the path that is provided and change it to what you want. Most likely you'll find exactly what you want if it is a common request.

Hey all.

I'm trying to cull a folder full of pictures. When I select maybe 11 or 12 pictures and delete them, they delete okay but then a green progress meter starts running across the location bar and I have to wait for it to finish before I can do anything else. It's taking forever.

I read some articles online that said disabling Remote Differential Compression will speed up copying and deleting of files in Vista. So I found the setting and unticked the box. A dialog opened with a progress meter and a message that said "This may take several minutes." So I waited and waited, about 15 minutes and nothing happened. There was no progress on the meter either. Every so often I would see activity on the processor light like it was doing something but not sure what. So has anyone ever done this and know how long it takes, and will it actually speed things up?

Thanks

If we knew your system specs we could help.
I suspect that the problem is too little RAM.

I've had the same frustration with Thunderbird for years. When I'm reading a message and forget that I haven't hit "reply" and highlight some words to erase.... it erases the whole file.
I submitted a bugzilla several years ago and the expert said it was a trivial problem since no one is that dumb to make that mistake. The fact that no one else has submitted it makes me think it is something in Options I have set wrong. Can someone help?

Now try deleting the folder.

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file, 50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it, I get the message
"cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied"

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not
currently in use.

While researching this on this forum I noticed a thread about the same problem, the advice given was" right click the file, choose "security" tab, then make sure about ownership, the problem is that, there is no security tab, at that point I'm stuck. I'd really like to get my 50 gig back, can anybody help?
