Psexec related question

Q: Psexec related question

Hi,
I have a question regarding psexec or an alternative perhaps? Basically, I have a batch file I made, that I want to allow a friend from a remote machine to exec. However, I want him ONLY to be able to exec this file, and not mess around anywhere else on the machine. Psexec gives too much privilege and he could open other things, etc. I did come across the program RemoteExec, but after the 15 day trial that won't be of much value to me(not paying 400$ for this singular occurrence). Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Why do you want to give remote access to this file? This kind of sounds like a classroom project you are trying to get help with.

At any rate, what about installing Apache web server and having the file access granted through the webserver?

Hello Team,
Please I want to ask if it is possible for ATA to detect when an attacker launch remote code execution (psexec) against a server on the network. I know ATA detects when such attack is launched against domain controllers, but what if the targeted machine
is a member server or workstation, will ATA still detect it?
Thanks.

am in the process of putting a batch file together to detect and force microsoft updates to a machine or a group of machines using PSEXEC.exe and a VBS script created by Rob Dunn and posted over at the forums at www.wsus.info.

I have listed below the steps needed to complete this task and would like it put together (if possible) in a batch file, UPDATE.VBS is the name of the script that I copy over to the machine and the PSTOOLS dir is the directory that PSEXEC resides in.

If I run these commands one at a time everything runs well, I would just like to know if it is possible to make this a "one step process"?
Ok here are all the cmds I need in order to run the script

1. net use \\TARGETMACHINE\C$ /user:"DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER"

2. copy update.vbs \\TARGETMACHINE\C$\update.vbs

3. exit back into PSTOOLS directory

3. psexec.exe \\TARGETMACHINE -u "DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER" -p PASSWORD -e -i cmd.exe /c cscript.exe //B C:\UPDATE.vbs
I have tested this on multiple machines and everything is running well. Any suggestions on how to set this up in one batch file? Of course I will eventually setup the PSTOOLS dir on a network drive instead of my local machine.

Hello Fangzhou CHEN,

Per your instructions below.  Is the U/P my admin info or the users?  Please advise.

We could use the PsExec tool to conduct the remote control.
1. Download the tool and copy to file to C:\Windows\System32

2. Run cmd as administrator
3. We could run the command psexec  \\ <computername >
-u <username> -p <password> <command>to run command in remote computer.

Hello all, I have a question about setting up Remote Desktop on PCs in our company. For most of the PCs on our network Remote Desktop is disabled by decree of the management. When I do need access to a machine I'll use psexec to enable the service then I'll disable it when I'm done. Some of the PCs are accessed by normal (non-admin) users on the network using Remote Desktop - we're looking for a way to remotely edit the list of users that can access the PCs that way - it'll be one specific user allowed per machine so a group policy doesn't seem to be the right way to go... Basically I'm looking for a way to remotely edit a machine's local secpol, specifically the "Allow logon through terminal services" setting.
I found this MS article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457125.aspx that mentions the SeNetworkLogonRight but I don't see that in the registry... I must be missing something stupid here - there has to be an easy way to do what I'm trying to do... Does anyone know what that easy way is?
This is the command I use to enable remote desktop - it seems like something similar could be used to edit the userlist? Argh!
psexec \\machine reg add "hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\terminal server" /f /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0

-Oh, it's an Active Directory Domain, all the PCs are WinXP - Thanks!

Hi,

I need to remove my CPU from my damaged motherboard to put it into my new motherboard. I just need to know if I need to replace the thermal interface (glue) when I add it to the new motherboard. If I do or if it *should* be done, where could I get the stuff I need? (I am referring to the thermal interface glue)...

Note: The Heatsink (came with the boxed processor) had a 'peel and stick patch' on the bottom side of it. Is that what I need to replace? If so where do I get that?

Also, I have already pulled the Heatsink off the processor, and noticed some funky looking 'glue' on the top of the processor, ( hope everything works when I put it back into the new mb.

If possible, could you reply to my email

Thank you in advance.

Okay, so i have had this laptop for about a year, bought it from cyberpower pc. It has a gtx 770M, 16 gs of ram, and a core i7-4700MQ running at 2.40 GHz. Well at the time of purchase I, for some reason, thought that the CPU was an area of the PC in which i could cut some cost. Basically i have realized that that isn't so and I was wondering if it would be worth trying to upgrade to a better CPU, or if that is even possible in a laptop. I know that if i want something that is up-gradable i should have bought a tower PC and not a laptop. But at the time I needed one for college and went the laptop route. That being said, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I will post my HJT Log in a bit, but I have a question that I need answered. I just did a virus scan with Avast, and noticed during the scan that I have alot of "C:\Volume Information\Restore" files that were scanned. Is this normal to have a large volume of these? I am not sure, but I think the last count was somewhere around 160 of these files. I went into search, to see if I could locate these files, but was unable. Can I delete the oldest of these files, and if so, how do I do that. I am pretty sure I do not have any viruses or malware or spyware, as I have some pretty clever devices downloaded to detect them. Has anyone experienced this or similar recently? We've seen multiple unrelated clients get hit with something that resembles a worm. It appears to use mimikatz to steal passwords for the currently logged on user (Active Directory) and then reaches out to other PCs on the network and uses psexec to run something. I assume it's trying to steal the next computer's username/password and so on. Processes can be seen in Task Manager running under other user accounts that are NOT logged into the PC. The users (which have never otherwise logged into the PC) then have profiles in C:\users. This process leaves the PSEXECSVC Windows service (visible in services.msc) and saves mimikatz.exe and other random KB_______.exe and ms_______.exe files in C:\ProgramData and C:\users\username\appdata\roaming and \appdata\local\temp. It seems to disable the Windows Firewall and Windows Update services, and it breaks Show Hidden Files so it can't be turned on or off.

Users have complained of audio/music playing in the background, and we've found .mp3 files in c:\users\username\appdata\roaming. It's hard to recover from this because cleaning the PCs one by one is great until an infected one is turned back on with network connectivity and hits all the cleaned/rebuilt ones again.

The thing that's most worrying to me is that I can't find much about this online. This appears to be the closest thing: http://blog.cylance.com/operation-cleaver-net-crawler

Also setup a group policy to disallow psexec.exce from running on C:\*
Thirdly make sure no user account has admin rights, ecspecially global admin rights or local admin rights.

I am trying to determine why IE7 installer fails to work when using PSEXEC to remotely install it?

hey,

Just bought my 4th Gb stick knowing full well that it would not show up as 4 in windows. But I was expecting it to show up in some way i.e. 3.25 - 3.5 GB, mine still shows '3000 MB'. I only bought the extra stick because it was at a very good price and I may upgrade to 64-bit at a later date.

How can I tell if it has actually been recognized and will it make any difference at all, even if it is marginal? The only indication I have is that the available video memory seems to have increased, I cannot be certain however because I haven't look at that figure for awhile.

A:Solved: 4gb RAM, 32-bit OS related question.

Check the amount of memory reported in the BIOS or during POST, that amount should report the full 4GB of memory. You can also check in the BIOS for an option called Memory Re-Mapping and either turn it on or off to see if it'll give you a little more memory in Windows.

If it shows only 3GB in the BIOS then try the new stick by itself, it may not be fully compatible or faulty.

If you have and are using the integrated video then increase the shared memory size and at least that way you'll get something out of the new memory.

Did you have XP or Vista prior to this? In Windows 7 you actually have to set the permissions manually if you're selectively opening shares on a network. It's a tad different from the standard "Shared Folders" in Windows XP, where you could go to your network, select a computer and expect the Shared Folders appear (that is, if you enabled the Public Folders settings). AFAIK, "Shared Folders" are shared and visible on the network. In my Guests account, I configured their privileges to read/write by EVERYONE (group).

If it still locks you out, I'd go to the folder properties, then the Sharing Tab, and add the "Everyone" category and give them read/write privileges. Keep in mind that you should do this using an administrator account, though.

Hello

Can I install an SSD drive for a laptop in a PC?

What should I look for characteristics for an SSD.

Is there some model that are not recommendable or more solid one?

A:SSD for laptop in a PC and related question

Sure, most LT's use a 2.5" SATA drive. You have a large selection of SSD's to choose from. I think most agree the Samsung 840 Pro is among the best. There are many lower cost SSD's, around .50 cents a GB that will get the job done.

Any current generation SSD is fine. Some of the older models have firmware issues. Personalty I use Samsung and OCZ SSD's.

ok, so im a noob here, and i'm hoping someone can help me out. I contracted the w32.desktop.hijack virus recently, and have been struggling to get it off my laptop. I tried norton, symantec, and followed their instructions completely (save for a couple reg values that weren't showing up on my system) and it was still there. tonight, i just d/l smitRem and it took the background off, and apparently from all the spyware/antivirus software i d/l wininet.dll is clean and not corrupt. the reg values that symantec's website instructs to change are still not there, and while the flashing spyware desktop is gone, mine is still not in place. instead it is a grey-ish and white-ish blank screen, depending on when i focus my mouse over the desktop or a window. i don't know what else i can do, or if there is anything i can do. can anyone help?

Download HijackThis (current verison is v1.99.1)

http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip

or here http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe (a self-extracting zip file)
or here http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe ( an .exe file).

Make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into.

(Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. Suitable examples are:
C:\HijackThis\
C:\Programs\hijackthis\
C:\Windows\My Documents\HJT\
but feel free to use any name.)

Extract and save the HijackThis download to the new folder you made. Then navigate to it and run HijackThis from there. (This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if fixes are made) Then, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and click Scan.

If required, look at this Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that and copy & paste its contents in your reply. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't try to fix anything yourself. I will examine the log and tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

greetings ladies and gentelman

i need your advice on a problem encountered with a system with 2 chains and 1 HD per chain.
the customer gets the following error everytime he attempts tor run a game "can't initialize timer error"

we verified that his chains are terminated pproperly

any help on this matter will be appreciated
cheers

A:SCSSI related question

I suppose you have more to tell us if you have associated this message with SCSI. I would guess it is a problem with the game not being able to access a timer. They use CPU cycles as timers for certain events. Does it happen with just one game or several? Perhaps the customer uninstalled a game that took an essential dll or vxd with it.

I've read this thread and did so because I was looking for help to connect a DSS-8+ D-Link switch to a 4 port wired router, that goes to a cable modem.
It's an older model D-link switch and I think it should work with the 4 port Linksys router. I want to connect the DSS-8+ to the router so I can get additional ports for more desktops.

I'm confused about the Hub/Switch part. There's a diagram that was recommended from this forum (http://www.homenethelp.com/web/diagram/share-router-hub.asp) that shows the connection layout as "internet->cable modem->router->Hub; however,
The AcE said he/she used a router, switch, and a hub and it worked successfully.

My question is: if I don't have a hub, will what I want to do still work?

I'm an old school IBM techie/geek and haven't kept up with the LAN/WAN tech stuff.
Thanks very much for your answer to a new member.

Hi Guys,
Recently, something changed on the way my files like Microsoft Word for example are Appearing as it now show the small extension at the end of a file's name like .docx, .txt, .zip, etc! Here, on the photo (below) is an example! My question is: Do you know how to hide these extensions because if I try to delete it, the file might become corrupt?
Thanks in advance,
Yannik

A:Question related to file ext?

Hello Yannik,

It looks like you may have enabled to show know file extensions in folder options. If so, you can uncheck it's option to not have them show anymore.

File Extensions - Hide or Show

Hope this helps,

Ok imma give a full rundown of the situation. Currently on the network we are on because of the way it is setup wake on lan doesn't work, so SCCM has at best a 70 success rate for patching. So I am currently spending a couple days a week remoting into computers and running a batch file to manually update computers. I need a way, that isn't psexec to execute a batch file on a remote computer. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Notes
- Batch file is on share drive atm.

A:Run Batch File On Remote Computer Without PsExec

So, you are using RDP and remotely logging into the computer? If that's the case, you should be able to put the batch file on a network share, and then execute it while you are in the RDP session.

I have created a couple batch files to easily update firefox on users computers. See the scripts below.

This executes a batch file on all computers listed in the firefoxusers.txt file.
Code:
psexec @firefoxusers.txt -u [I]AdminUsername[/I] -p [I]password[/I] c:\installers\firefox.bat
This is the file that is executed from the one above to install the file silently from a shared drive.
Code:
pushd \\server\applications\firefox

firefoxsetup.exe -ms

popd
My problem is that when I run this script I have no idea if the software was installed correctly or not. I am looking for a way to just output what was run so I can go through and see if anything failed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure if Redirection will work or not.
http://www.robvanderwoude.com/redirection.php

You could try this.
psexec @firefoxusers.txt -u AdminUsername -p password c:\installers\firefox.bat 2> errorlog.txt

or inside your batch file. Not sure if this one witll work or not.
firefoxsetup.exe -ms 2> \\server\applications\firefox\errorlog.txt

When I had Windows Live Mail 14.0.0416, the quotation marks looked like this.....

" dash "

Now I have WLMail 2011, the quotation marks are like this ......

? dash ?

I am , and always been, using Arial, font size 14. Never changed.
It is minor. Just wonder if I have option to change. That's all.
By the way, the " navy blue " color option for my font is no longer available. At least not the same "navy blue " that I used before.

A:WLMail 2011 related question

I researched this and received the following reply from IFireDog:

WLMail uses Windows fonts, so no change there. What has changed, though, is that WLMail 2011 got smart and now substitutes "curly" quotes for "straight" ones. The only way to alter this behaviour is a registry hack: at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Compose\Preferences\PostEditor\Autoreplace change the ones to noughts for the substitutions you don't want.

I should note that I've also downloaded Essentials 2010 and went to this location and found only two entries: emoticons and hyphens; nothing concerning quotes (unless they are included in one of those two entries) so this may not resolve the issue unless it made more changes on your system than on mine.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I have a question about completely deleting files for security's sake. I'm donating a computer for a few months to a local organization. But, I had a bunch of my own financial info on there at one point.

So, I deleted all those files, but I've since been told that, on my computer (a mac os 9-something..), deleting files doesn'y fully erase them. I was then told that I could buy some software to like fully erase everything on my computer, but I don't want do that either. I still want to keep all the applications, settings, and non-financial files, etc. for when they give it back. I just wanna make sure the sensitive files I threw away are really fully erased, and that some stranger won't somehow retrieve my social or credit card info by de-trashify-ing the files I already put in the trash and "emptied".

Can someone please help me figure out how to do this? HELP! Thanks!

A:Help please! deleting/security related question...

Hi Yes, there is software to do just what you want, but for a Mac, I am not exactly sure where or what to get!
For a WinPC> there are things that will securely wipe the FREE space on a hard drive, which is supposed to clean completely what HAS already been "deleted". In Windows the "delete" only marks data as over-writable, it is not visible, but is able to be made so by other programs {Undelete, Unerase, Data Recovery apps...many of them too.} Mac file system is probably similar, data can be made visible if not securely "shredded" by a specific file shredder when deleting...or by a data recovery application...so, you are correct thinking that it could be unsecure for you to loan out the Mac....

Here is something to keep in mind when using any of these programs:
They usually come with a utility to Wipe the entire Disk...so if you leave the program installed, someone may be able to do just that by mistake {my 4 yr old grandson likes to do things like that} Be a good idea to burn any download of the installer to CD and uninstall the program before you loan the Mac to the org.
"Don't forget to empty your recycle bin before overwriting free space"

Also> Recycle Bin protectors do exist, Norton by Symantec products like SystemWorks suites do have it, so you would have to configure things to work around that type of situation....

I will so some checking> there is always Mac home world and the main Apple site to start from, ... Read more

Hi all,

I was just wondering, what influenced the decision to split up the Windows 7, 8 and 10 forums into separate discussion forums? I'd have thought it would be beneficial to have integrated them all into one?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section!

I just got a 42" Philips 1080 in my room and I was debating on whether to get a 360 or not. I've come to the conclusion that I'm not going to and I'd like to stick with a game that I'm very good at; Counter-Strike. Aside from all that I want to ask everyone a question here.

I keep my computer in fairly good condition, I always defrag, disk clean up, delete all my cookies and registries, I always scan every three days. There. My PC is still a bit sluggish, and I want to play a Counter-Strike:Source, that's not nearly going to eat up my system resources such as Crysis or Call of Duty 4 would.

I have 1GB of RAM, I'm looking to upgrade to 3.

I have an ATI Radeon X1650, I'll probably purchase an 8800. Any suggestions on how to keep a GPU cool? Is there a USB fan I can buy and put it underneath my card?

These are all easy questions for myself, but these upgrades alone, I should notice a difference between my gameplay and my computer correct? Right.

I have an 800 watt power supply, and I use my hard drive frequently for multimedia purposes. All I'm looking for are some suggestions from the community. Thanks.

P.S. I've played Counter-Strike: Source on this computer before, it's just been through a lot after time and I don't feel like reformatting.

After recently changing my isp and I was just running a speedtest Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test on the Dallas > Texas as one one of games I play have their data servers there .. it displayed my download/upload around 0.50Mbps but the speed I'm paying for is 2Mbps. Currently I'm located in Bangladesh, is this normal to lose bandwidth if the distance is too far?

I called my ISP and their tech guy said its normal to loses some bandwidth if the distance is too far and thus if I want better dl speed I need to upgrade my internet package and I'm no techie but this sounds sketchy .. I mean not every website/server have their own CDN and thus I'm sure I've downloaded/played lots of games/files or whatever from far away places .. and never had my dl speed getting low because of "distance traveled".

Anyone know about networking and stuff can confirm if the above statement from the ISP guy is correct or not?

The situation:
Within the next couple of months I would like to put together a PC. This won't be my first so I'm considering doing something different. I am interested in using a Seagate Cheetah 15K HDD (74Gb approx) as my primary hard drive which will most likely contain two operating systems at most - although not for certain. I would also like to put one or two Seagate Barracuda (1tb each) drives alongside the smaller, high speed one.

The smaller hard drive will obviously have the OS installed on it, and will be used for temporarily saving files that are currently in use.

The question:
Is my intended plan a good one that will allow for overall faster operation of the system, or is it more wise to just use the larger (7200 rpm) drives and have the OS run off that?

A:Planning another build - HDD related question

You will probably have to install a PCI SCSI card which is almost the same price as the drive.
I am not sure if the combined cost is worth it.
The Seagate barracuda 32mb cache is almost as fast as the Raptors and a lot cheaper

Okay I bought a Gateway GT5674 and I love it. I had a question though.. I have an old HP 511w hanging around, and I decided to take it apart (me being a newb at Hardware and stuff). I got the Hard drive out (which is an IDE) and I was wondering if it could be able to be installed on the Gateway.. So I opened it up and I saw that the HDD that was pre-installed was SATA.. Now i'm no Hardware Expert, but is there a way to get the IDE one in there without a Sata-Ide converter.. I was thinking maybe I could connect it to the IDE cable that is connected to the Optical Drive, and set it as slave.. or idk

Also, I was looking around in the motherboard and I saw a connector that looks like IDE.. Without the cable.. So maybe I can get the IDE cable from the HP511w and connect it there and set the hdd to Master..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

A:Solved: Newbie Question (Hdd related)

There might be a floppy drive connector on the motherboard without the cable, but don't use that for an IDE device or cable.

Hey there,

what does Max Component Density: 512Mb mean?

A:Quick Mobo/ram related question!

some types of ram can be compressed to achieve higher densities. This is done on the hardware level. This term is pretty much meaningless for end users.

So just stick with what the stated capacity is. If it's 512mb, it's 512.

One of our clients is going out of town and will be renting a printer. They will be out of town for a brief time period (a couple days). Consequently, to verify everything goes smoothly, they would like to install the appropriate driver(s) prior to going out of town/ before they arrive on location on multiple machines. What would be the best process for this since I can't test/ confirm the correct printer driver is installed or print a test page? Someone suggested a method I am not familiar with, but basically, I would click start> devices and printers> printer server properties> drivers. All of the machines have Windows 7 Professional installed on them. I believe it will be a Kyrocera FS-1370DN printer. FYI, I am a tier one tech.
