I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Guys,
New to this forum, have searched this problem on the internet but found no answer. I have had to recently re-install Windows XP after a nasty virus wrecked my computer. Everything was working great afterwards except the sound. In the Device Manager it says that my sound hardware (C-Media AC97 Audio Device) is there but has a yellow exclaimation mark on it. I have tried updating drivers through windows, uninstalling and re-installing, and deleting and re-installing. But every time I get an error message This device cannot start (Code 10).
I have downloaded Belarc and have my computer spec if it is relevant(what a piece of software btw).
PS. I'm not exactly a computer whizz!!

Thanks!

My friend's laptop is having trouble recognizing its sound driver (Realtek AC97). The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled a couple months ago, and ever since then it hasn't been able to play sound. Under the Device Manager, Realtek AC'97 Audio has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and under its Device Status it reads "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, as well as downloading the most recent driver (the most recent I could find was 4.04), but to no avail. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

On other boards that I've looked at people have asked what motherboard was being used. I used Everest to find the following information under "Motherboard":

Motherboard:

OK you probably thought of this first thing but don't laugh when I ask: after the clean install, did your friend run the motherboard disk for his machine? Because the AC97 drivers are on that cd. He should disable it in "devices' and install the driver from the mobo cd and then enable it again and reboot. Should have sound. Only other thing is it could be disabled in the bios - you could check that too.

You should have a ASUS support cd when you got your PC the driver is on that CD.
If you do not have the cd you will have to go to the ASUS site choose downloads and follow the leads for your MOBO and then AUDIO

A:Error In C-Media AC97 Audio Device

My first question is, did you ever install the drivers for the motherboard chipset? Depending on the age of your system, you can run into this type of problem when you install the individual device drivers without FIRST installing the proper motherboard chipset drivers (MCD)...

If you DID install the chipset drivers, provide a link to the page where you got them from; we can then check to see if newer / better drivers are available...

We need to know some details about your system; tell us exactly which motherboard your system uses, along with the type of CPU (AMD XP, Intel P-IV, AMD-64, etc.)... It will also help if you can provide a link to the motherboard manufacturer's website, where we can find more specific details about your mobo. We need to know which OS you're using, since you haven't already provided that information... What is the date of the BIOS? You should be able to see that during POST... so copy that information down, and post it here...

Also, tell us EXACTLY which driver you downloaded and installed for your soundchip; provide a link to the website where you found the sound driver...

If you're using WinXP, did you remember to install SP2 IMMEDIATELY after you installed XP? Once you have the OS and SP2 installed, you need to install the MCD BEFORE you install the individual device drivers for your hardware... There are drivers for the video, modem / NIC, audio, and every other hardware device on your system. Some of them are built into... Read more

Hi @JS2045 The problem HD audio device you are seeing is the Intel HDMI audio device that needs a driver. I looked around for a W10 driver for the hardware ID you posted, and can't find one. You don't need that device unless you want/need audio through the display port. The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the W7 Intel graphics driver from your notebook's support and driver page, but install it this way...so that you just target the problem audio device... Download, but don't run this graphics driver... http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=4095873&swItemId=ob_127914_1&swEnvOid=4059 Download and install this free file utility.  64 bit is the second file listed. http://www.7-zip.org/ After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file you downloaded, and select 7-zip from the list of items. Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the driver to the folder name (sp64360). Go to the device manager and click on the problem Intel HD audio device needing the driver. Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way. Then reboot. If you explore the driver folder 7-zip created, and open the DisplayAudio folder, you will find the setup informa... After many many tries and a couple reformats, I've decided to ask for help instead of trying fixes that have yet to work.

I got this laptop about a week ago from Radio Shack. It came with vista preinstalled and had so much stuff I did not want. I wanted XP cause I have had a fair share of experience with both Vista and XP to come to say Vista is a gigantic resource hog. I wanted to go back to XP because I'm an avid gamer and most gamers use XP.

I downgraded and found all the drivers, and my computer flew. EXCEPT, it had no sound.

I've tried drivers for every laptop known to man and have seen many people fix theirs, but to no avail, none have worked.

I've tried the HD hotfix and it is currently installed.

Hi there,

Not a computer expert by any means and would really appreciate your help. I tried to download a 'DVD decoder' that would enable me to watch a DVD that wasn't working on Windows Media the other day. This still didn't work and gave me a far more frustrating problem as well....

The sound has now gone and I have a yellow explanation mark next to my audio device (in device manager) and the device status says 'This device can not start (Code 10)'.

My computer is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Model: T7870
AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHZ
1.00 GB of RAM

I have tried de-installing and re-installing, got rid of any new downloads, checked for Viruses (using Kapersky), checked the wires and done everything on Windows Troubleshooter a number of times!

I saw a few other threads on this and it all resulted in the poster having to buy a new sound card. Mine is built into my system and this all seems quite fiddly and could cause me to do further damage. Has anyone else got any further advice before I go ahead and do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice given. It is much appreciated!

Hey hello everyone, I am new member here. I already checked couple threads with this same title, but I didn't really find any solution.

Here's a thing. Yesterday I went to clean my computer for dust, so I opened case and unplugged all wires. Now everything is backup except there is no sound. In device manager I got that yellow/black '!' next to Realtek AC3'97 Audio. I reinstalled drivers couple times already, but nothing. I mean, I was just cleaning dust...

So I came up with that idea that it might be the problem with the front panel pins, which I probably connected in wrong ways. I don't even know in which way those pins should be facing when connecting. So the motherboard is Asus A8N5X (from 2005, yea old), computer runs on Windows XP SP3. I tried many combinations with those pins, but nothing. I get that yellow/black '!' next to device or I get nothing at all (it won't show the device at all).

I tried reading the manual, but the wire names are different on the actual wires than shown in the manual:

And the names on wires are:

GND (black wire)
GND (black wire)
Mic Bias (yellow)
Mic In (green)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout R (white)
Spkout R (white)

As you can see names duplicates. So I tried various combinations, but nothing. Once looked like I fixed it, after loading Windows up, there was sound icon in the tray, but PC suddenly restarted and next time there was no audio again.

Like I said I unplugged all wires befo... Read more

After restoring my laptop I now get the following error for "High definition audio device" in device manager: This device cannot start. (Code 10){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful.  First thing I tried was updating all drivers which did not change anything. I then tried reinstalling the driver provided on the hp support site as well as uninstalling through device manager and installing again from the hp support site. I have also tried fully restoring my laptop and reinstalling Windows but this has not solved it. I am not sure if this is an issue from the driver provided online or if it is my laptop. I have tried running the "find and fix audio playback problems" tool which just suggests updating/reinstalling the driver... Windows audio is already started in Services. I have checked for the upper/lower filter entry in regedit, which weren't there. Can anyone help advising what else I can troubleshoot or if there is another site I can use to try download this driver? Thanks in advance.

Hey! First things first, I'm running an Aspire V3-772g laptop. After the recent Windows 10 update, I was having issues getting past the lock screen (took AGES to get to the point where I could input my password) and it had been a while, so I reformatted ('reset my PC' deleting all files) - this actually didn't solve my problem, so I used Rufus with a Windows 10 iso from Microsoft to delete all partitions and REALLY start fresh. Ever since, the laptop is running like a dream--in all but one respect. It seems like no matter WHAT I do, I CANNOT get my HDMI audio / TV to appear as an option in Playback Devices (yes, disabled devices is ticked). Looking in Device Manager, the High Definition Audio Device has an exclamation mark is throwing a code 10 - device unable to start. I've tried uninstalling it, tried installing all drivers from Intel's V3-772g page including chipset, updated my graphics driver / Realtek / Intel HD audio drivers... and yet, nothing. Ran /sfc, ran /chkdsk, nothing. I read something that led me to believe .NET framework might be part of the issue--and I did actually have quite a bit of difficulty getting 3.5 installed / functional, but I finally did...... and still, nothing!! I'm seriously losing my mind. I'm having to run my surround sound through an auxiliary cable into the laptop, which is just sacrilege and a fraction of the quality. If there is ANYTHING, ANYONE can suggest beyond the above, please do!!

I'm having an issue I've had before, and found the resolution for... But can't find it again.

Symptoms: Flash programs, like the sound for the MMO I tried logging into, and the part of an online job application that has a "play" button to listen to a scenario then answer the questions from what you heard... won't play. Problem wasn't there lasntight, it's there today. Winamp, etc. will still play audio. System sounds won't play. Alert sounds used to play a chime but now play the alert tone from the pc.

All drivers are updated and correct. This is a setting somewhere that needs to be fixed, I just don't remember what setting. Some people with this problem report that it fixed itself after a while, but I don't have time to sit and count on that.

I know a new piece of hardware won't fix it... It's an issue in the computer settings somewhere.

Steps taken:
Originally when I went to device manager it showed everything as working.
Down in the system tray I had the volume icon, but when I tried to left click, nothing happened.
When I went to right click>open volume controls, it gave an error saying there were no mixing devices.
Checked that realtek is set to mixing, and checked all drivers.
Went into control panel>sounds and audio devices: no audio device, and no option to set one as default.
I went into services.msc and audio's set to automatic already.

I am working on an xp xp3 system and I have no sound. In device mgr, it shows "this device cannot start-code 10" on the c-media ac97 audio device. I have uninstalled it and re-booted, downloaded the driver and it won't install in safe or regular mode. It is a pc that was built by a computer store in house. It has XP home prem sp3 running an amd processor @ 1.7 ghz. It has 512mb ram and an 80gb hd. I can't see a name on the MOBO,but the model # is SiS741, but the bios is Phoenix Award. I have eliminated any infections.
There are a lot of complaints on the forums from 2006 and 2007, but nothing current. Can anyone help? Thanks

I think you may have run into a fairly common problem
that windows has a tendency to misidentify a realtek
audio chipset as cmedia.
You might try the realtek software from here...

I'm frustrated. <sigh>

Hopefully someone can give me some insight as to why all of the sudden my computer is telling me that my audio and media devices are gone.

My volume control is gone from the task-bar and everything in my system is telling me that I have no audio devices anymore. In 'Sounds & Audio Devices' (in the Control Panel) it tells me that I have no audio device (which used to be SB Live!). Under the Audio tab, SBLive! is gone from there now too and the only thing listed under "sound playback" is 'Modem #2 Line Playback'.

I've reinstalled SBLive! and this didn't fix anything.
In the Device Manager the following have a "!" next to them:

Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
The properties for both of these items list the following error:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

I also was told that it might help to delete the Upper and Lower filter settings in the following Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Needless to say... this didn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get my sound working again?
Please let me know if you need me to post any additional information here!

Thanks!

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

A:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

while going through my device manager, a yellow triangle sign caught my attention. It is under the "Sound, video and game controllers' labeled as 'Bluetooth Audio Device". When opening the properties, it says that "This device annot start. (Code 10) Object Path Component was not a directory object.

I went to the MSI website (The laptop is a 4 days old MSI GS70-229) and could not find the corresponding driver for this so called "Bluetooth Audio Device". Windows update was unable to find anything, and the "Roll Back Driver" button was disabled. Driver provider is Qualcomm Atheros Communication.

If anyone knows a solution or knows where to get the driver, I would really appreciate if you show me where.

Thank you!

I would literally kiss the person even if I have to cross the seven seas if he/she gives me the solution to this goddamn problem!

CPU: Dell Optiplex 745
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise x64
RAM: 2GB
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 6700 2.66GHz
Hard drive: 250GB
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 210 (1GB) DDR3

So here is the problem. MY SOUND DRIVER! I have tried everything, every effing thing believe me. This just doesn't stop! First I went to the dell website and I downloaded the recommended audio driver which was 'SoundMax'.. It worked for a couple of days and than once again my sound failed, I received this message once again 'No Audio Output device is installed' ..than after reading multiple threads I downloaded High Definition Audio Codec from REALTEK and than AC'97 .. Same thing, they worked for a day or so and than once again on one fine morning when I woke up, my sound was gone! I did everything believe me. I bought a 30$ DVD of automatic driver solutions. SAME THING! Works for a couple of days, than its gone!
Than, before losing hope.. I tried something else! I tried Windows update, SAME FREAKING THING! I can't catch a break believe me! Please fix this for me. I have like a ka-zillion games like GTA 4, DOTA 2, World Of Warcraft and many many more! I love them and they love me. And now, I am unable to play those, they all require sound! I tried everything, as soon as I restart my computer a couple of times, I lose my sound once again to that same effing message 'No Aud... Read more

A:No Audio Output device is installed. CODE 10.

First, the driver from Dell is the only one you should be using.

However, first download the Intel motherboard chipset drivers from Dell and install them, then the Dell sound driver. The chipset drivers define (identify) all the devices on the motherboard and if that is missing or corrupt it could cause the Code 10.

Another problem can be the BIOS. If the sound is disabled in the BIOS that will also cause a Code 10.

The Video will not cause the Code 10. If you have a Video card with HDMI audio, if you connect an HDMI cable most systems will switch the default audio playback device to the HDMI but that's all.

One problem I see, although it may not directly affect audio is you only have 2GB of RAM. That is very minimum RAM and your 64 bit OS will do nothing extra with 2GB of RAM. You could have the 32 bit OS version and it would work exactly the same. 64 bit OS takes advantage of memory over 4GB. Under 4GB it works exactly like a 32bit OS. Consider upgrading the memory. The entire PC will work better.

Hello,
I was installing some new hardware and upon installation, I get this little red x over my speakers with a message saying "no audio output device is installed" message. I have tried the following:

Device manager<disable then enable
Device manager<uninstall and then go to Control Panel<add hardware<audio&game controllers to reinstall
Checked BIOS for possible disabling
Made it automatic somewhere I don't remember right now.
Put the computer to sleep and waking it up
Unplugging and plugging in the speakers
Turning on then off the speakers
Trying the headphones jack

I've been to noaudiootput.com and still no help.

I am at a loss as to what this could be! I have an ASUS M3N72-D motherboard. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks to several posts in the Hardware Forum I found a solution to this error:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Tel Audio card
2. Updated Drivers
3. Unplugged output device from system*
4. Restarted system, plugged output device back in
5. Sound is back!

Thanks to all who contributed solutions to this issue. This is my first time using Tech Support Guy. I am impressed and grateful.

Basically I have 2 Nvidia PCI-E cards on an Asus P5N-E SLI. One is a GTX260, the other a 7600GS. I run 4 screens off these cards (don't ask me why, its useful for the work I do ). The system is dual boot.

Windows 7. No problems ever.
Windows XP. No problems. BUT quite often the screens on the 7600GS fail to turn on, I go into device manager and it says "Device Cannot Start (Code 10)" on that card. Disabling and enabling doesn't help, and neither does rebooting. Eventually I might reboot enough times that it works.

The problem is very annoying, it's always worked and this has been a recent thing that it sometimes doesn't. My PSU is a Hiper PSU 780W, but I can't see it being a lack of power since it's been working fine up until recently.

Edit: So I just restart a 2nd time and its working properly again. It's completely intermittent and random.
