Bought a T480...

Q: Bought a T480...

Hey! I was wondering any kind of SSDs would work with the T480? Right now I bought it with 500 GB HDD and Intel Optane (16Gb), but in the future, I might consider upgrading to 512 nVME SSD for system. Also, what do you guys know about the battery life upon general internet usage? I bought a battery with 72Wh so in total it would be 96 Wh. Plus, I also own a Varta Power Bank (13mAh) 48,1 Wh. Do you guys believe it could charge the battery by any chance? https://www.varta-consumer.com/en/products/portable-power/overview/details/lcd-power-bank-13000 Please let me know you guys think! Bellow you can see the exact specs. (In general I will not use the dedicated GPU, just the integrated)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Instead of sending the activation code to my sign-in email, it was sent to my reserve email, which no longer exists on the system, I sent the new telephone number, this has been changed, but I am still not able to open any of my Office applications. Yet
I will be charged the renewal from the date I put in the product key. When one has a product key and then signs in to Live, why does this then not activate? Why when you have changed to my new telephone number, have you not sent me an activation code? With
my reserve email dead, you do not allow me to change it. The only other email I use is Gmail, they are much better than Windows Live, I only use Windows Live to allow me to put new programmes onto my computer, and as usual ten days later I have no use of the
programme I bought. So typically Windows. I have used you since the day you began, what went wrong? You used to function once. These last years have been hell. I wish I had bought an Apple computer and changed everything to Apple. Each time I buy a new laptop
these same issues come up. Please give me access to the Windows Office 365 I bought and put on my computer.

My last ThinkPad was two decades ago and it last me years. Eventually, software progression outpaced it while hardware still going strong.  Not sure if the quality of ThinkPad dropped or what. But my x1c6 HDR screen turned pink (see photo) twice within just a week of ownership. I have to close and reopen the lid for it to go away. Bad connection between the LCD and MB? In addition, I also heard a few stories which mysterious cracks developed on the lid after a few months of usage.  I don't want to bother with warranty claim since it is within the 30 days return period. If I do decide to x1c6 another chance, should I get extended accidental warranty just to safe? How often does x1 develop issues down the road?

I've noticed my fan always stays on regading the temps when my machine is plugged on the 65W charger, temperatures remain between 38 and 57 on light use, but even when idling the fan kicks on as soon as I plug in my charger and turns off a couple seconds after I plug it off. I have tried to fix it by installing the patch mentioned on https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/es/en/solutions/ht506625 and changin the BIOS profile for the plugged status (it's on the same profile now both for AC plugged and unplugged) but the problem perists. Anyone knows how to fix this issue without the need to install 3rd party software or can point me to the windows 10 settings that regukate this behaviour? Thanks in advance.

I ordered a T480 with the Geforce MX150 option. Was surprised to see my delivered unit with Intel UHD 620 and simultaneously active with the Geforce GPU. The Intel GPU however is the default display adapter. Intel UHD 620 is active display adapterI've never quite seen this before. Desktop mainboard BIOS would typically disable the onboard GPU if slotted with an actual video card (leaving the OS blind to its presence), and all my previous laptops that I configured with a discrete GPU would have just that alone. Am I supposed to disable the UHD 620 in Device Manager in order to force the Geforce to take over? I don't see anything in the BIOS that can influence this (in fact it seems to suggest the UHD is in charge with its shared memory setting).

After perusing this and other forums looking for a definitive answer, there seem to be dissenting opinions on whether using the drive caddy and adapter cable in the HDD bay will allow 2280 M.2 NVMe SSD drives to utilize all 4 PCIe lanes. I want to know if there is a reason to shop for a higher end M.2 drive if I can't extract full performance out of it.

I don't have one to test, but the platform spec for the T480 says that some of the T480 machines have SATA drives and some have this: "M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4"

To me, that means is should use 4 lanes

Hi,Recently bought a T480 with the 150MX Nvidia card. The laptop works great during normal operation during work etc but when I get home and want to play some games, nothing is working as it should. What happens is this:When I start the game everything is running good but after a few minutes I can see my CPU start to lower it's power limit (PL1) slowly towards 5W. It will stop at 5W never gaining any wattage back until i restart computer. The PL1 is at 15W when computer is newly booted. I have tried to uninstall the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, this results in that the processor is fixed at 15W but after a while the iGPU will go crazy and goes to 100% leaving the CPU at 2W = 0.2Ghz. And I have to restart. So this is not a valid solution. All my power settings are on maximum performance ofc.I have tried almost everything I can think of and been browsing all kind of reddit threads without any long term solution.

Hi,This is the first Lenovo Laptop bought by me.I am using the laptop for a few days and the impressions are overalling good, but, I have 2 problems:The first is with the 2 battery system.I tought that the first battery to discharge was the removal battery, but that is not the case. Do I have to change something in BIOS?The second problem is with the UltraDockStation.When I have 1 USB disk connected to the DockStation, I am unable to backup laptop to USB disk, or to transfer big files (10GBs for example) (from the laptop to USB 3.0 disk). It starts normally and then it freezes the transfer.If I connect the USB disk directly to the laptop this problem doesn't occur.All components area updated, with Lenovo Vantage.Anyone has this problems and are there any ways to solve it?Thank you

A:2 Problems with new T480

I can only respond to the 1st question.  See post below.  you cant change in Bios discharge priority.  Discharge priority depends on the wear level of the 2 batteries.

Hello all, Just received my sixth thinkpad in the last 23 years. It arrived yesterday.  It is a: T480, I7-8550U, 16GB(8+8), 512 M.2 SSD, iGPU, Win10 Pro The fan is really annoying.  It goes on and off constantly.  It seems to ramp up to full speed.  I have been reading about fan noise with this model all over the internet.  Is there a way for it to run constantly at a lower speed than the constant on and off?  My previous model was a T430 never had issues with fan noise (it was very quiet too when it ran). Currently running a test:  Not using the laptop at all.  Opened 1 tab on Chrome and have it sitting on cnn.com.  Also, opened one tab on Edge also on cnn.com.  Task manager open.  Chrome uses less CPU but more memory than Edge.  CPU is running between 15% and 20%.  Fan turns on every minute or so for about 20 to 30 seconds then goes off. It is loud and annoying going on and off.  Why can't it just be a constant lower speed?  On and off is ridiculous.  If this keeps up this machine is going back. Thanks for any replies and suggestions.

Hi everyone, today I upgraded the RAM and the SSD of my T480. I am absolutely not doing this for the first time and I was really careful. I removed the external battery and deactivated the internal battery before starting with the procedure. I used only ESD-safe tools and an ESD-wristband to make sure that the device doens't get damaged by static discharge.After installing the components, my device would no longer turn on. When I connect the charger, the power led flashes 3x but when I press the powervbutton nothing happens. No fan spin, no lights turning on, absolutly nothing.I then tried removing the RAM and the SSD and turning on the machine. But that didn't work as well.After that I tried removing all the power sources (internal and external battery, CMOS-battery), pressing the power button for 60 seconds and leaving the device for 1 hour before reconnecting everything. But it still can't turn it on. Do you guys have any idea what I could try to make my device work again? Thanks in advance. --resonance

I have been having issues with my battery on my T480 lately. I will have the laptop running around 50% battery and sometimes try to restart it but when I do, the laptop will not power back up. The Lenovo bios screen will post but when the Windows 10 circle starts spinning the computer fully shuts itself off and loses power and I cannot turn it back on until I plug the charger in, but when Windows loads it says I have battery. Yesterday I was using the laptop and when it went from 50 to 49% battery the laptop fully died and shut off and would not power on again until I plugged in the charger, yet showed 49% battery when Windows loaded again. I have been working out in the cold with my laptop and I am not sure if that is or has affected it some how but I can't keep having these types of issues when I need to be able to use my computer in the field. I know Lenovo used to have a tool to reset and deplete and recharge the battery, does this still exist? I ran the diagnostic tool but it finished instantly saying both batteries were fine with a time on the diagnostic of 0 seconds. Not sure if there is another tool I can be using to try and get this working properly again.

My T480 came with the standard 512GB NVMe SSD in-a-caddy. I'd need some more storage so am attempting to tweak the laptop, putting in 2 SSD into the 2.5" space. Here's my plan: M.2 2280 NVMe/SATA
-> Proprietary connector (F) on the motherboard
-> Proprietary connector (M) 00UR495
-> SATA-600 (F) 00UR495
-> M.2(NGFF) SATA KEY B+M SSD to SATA Adapter card
-> Crucial MX500 M.2 Type 2280 SSD

M.2 2242 NVMe slot
-> NGFF M.2 PCIe M-Key extension card with 20CM cable
-> Lenovo SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 SSD M.2 2280 Samsung (FRU 00UP490)I thought of extending the M.2 2242 NVMe slot with an extender card but turns out it doesn't fit. These are the two pieces I'd like to connect by an extender card: Motherboard: Lenovo T480 M.2 B-key (NVMe only x4 slot, x2 physically wired)https://imgur.com/rutbx72--> The 6 pins on the bottom (only 5 physically wired) suggest to me that this is a B key M.2 slot.NVMe SSD:Lenovo NVMe SSD M-key (PCIe GEN3 x4 NVMe)https://imgur.com/dI1AyRq The extender card I had attempted early, but that doesn't fit the M.2 2242 NVMe slot:http://eshop.sintech.cn/storage-adapter-ngff-m2-pcie-c-130_137.html Am I correct to conclude that the M.2 2242 NVMe slot is B key? Or is this a more special WWAN slot or alike?

I bought a T480 with an HDD, but I've since bought a Samsung 960 Evo and installed it into the laptop bay, and I want to clone the HDD to the SSD by booting from the HDD externally, but that doesn't work. I'm using a Sabrent USB 3.0 hard drive adapter kit to power and connect the HDD externally. I looked around for solutions just can't boot the HDD externally, even after going to BIOS and disabling secure boot and changing UEFI/legacy boot option to both.

A:T480 can't boot from external HDD?

Usually one must format the SSD before use, then connect it with a USB adapter to clone the existing HDD to it.

Steps that I employ...

Purchase SSD
Read SSD user guide, download manufacture software
Format SSD using manufacture software
hookup SSD to target computer via USB (notebook) or SATA (desktop)
Clone HDD to SSD via manufacture software / thrid party software
Verify information on SSD matches HDD
Remove HDD, replace with SSD
Boot the computer (notebook) verify installation / cloning works
Store HDD in safe location (as back up device)

This procedure works 99% of the time, but there is always the 1% that I have to work around otherwise.

Good luck.

Hi Lenovo Community, Just about a week ago, I got my new T480 (Type 20L5). It comes with an NFC reader that I really loved to have. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to read any of the 4 different NFC cards that I can properly read with my Android Phones. OS: Windows 10 Pro (Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763). Driver: NXP Semiconductors - 12.0.4.0 (also tried the pre-installed 12.0.2.0 and 12.0.3.0) NFC reader program: Currently, I use TagWriter from NXP (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/tagwriter/9wzdncrdx3rh). But I tried others too. NFC tags:EM Microelectronic (NfcV, NdefFormatable) (ISO 15693)NXP IBM JCOB (NfcA, IsoDep) (ISO 14443-4)NXP MIFARE Classic 1k (NfcA, MifareClassic, NdefFormatable) (ISO 14443-3A)NXP MIFARE Ultralight EV1 - 48 bytes (NfcA, MifareUltralight, NdefFormatable) (ISO 14443-3A) Symptom:When the NFC reader of the T480 detects one of those tags, Windows starts beeping. The TagWriter software also shows that a tag is currently being read. But then TagWriter reports that the tag would be empty.I also tried reading the tags with two Android P smartphones (Google Pixel 1 and OnePlus 7 Pro). Both phones give me the content of the tags and proof that they are not empty. Now I am kind of lost. When buying the T480, I specifically configured the NFC reader into it. Does anybody have similar experiences or any advice? Many thanks!

Trying to determine the maximum amount of RAM the ThinkPad T480 can take, however there is conflicting information provided by Lenovo. On Lenovo's online New Zealand store it mentions that the ThinkPad T480 CPU will need to be upgraded ("Upgrade the processor to select up to 32 GB of memory") in order for the max RAM to be 32 GB (in the customise section) which is very confusing, yet in the ThinkPad T480 Product Specification document it mentions 32 GB RAM for all CPU configurations. Lenovo haven't responded to the ThinkPad T480 sales enquiry I have submitted, which includes the question on the ThinkPad T480 max RAM. On Lenovo's online New Zealand store the chat function is broken, and there is no clear information provided about their contact hours. Is Lenovo's New Zealand sales/support team on holiday?

We just purchased 20 of the T480 laptops, with 40AF ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock's.  We are having several issues with these devices:The internal battery drains almost all the way down before the replaceable battery drainsThe monitors connected to the dock don't work in BIOS and pre-windows logon screen.  We are unable to enter the bitlocker unlock key without using the laptop itselfThe USB ports on the dock cut in and out.  You'll be moving your mouse and all of the sudden it stops moving, then jumps accross the screen.  You'll be typing, and all of the sudden you'll get 10 of 1 character.  This happens about every other minute or so. Sometimes the dock and laptop don't proprly recognize each other.  The orange light on the dock never turns white, the laptop never chargess.  The only way to fix this is the power cycle the dock. I've tried 2 different docks with my laptop, and they both have the same issues. Running BIOS 1.12, and I see the new BIOS version's don't fix any of these issues.

Using the trackpad on this T480 (i5 8350u, mx150, 16gb) results in jumpy cursor movement, especially at low speeds. It doesn't really hinder the usability but it's definitely not smooth. Is the trackpad just *like* this? Or do I have a dud? What I've tried to troubleshoot: This isn't a screen issue because my wireless mouse tracks very smoothly.I'm on the latest intel + nvidia drivers on windows 10 1803 (latest updates).I've also tried using the trackpad on ubuntu live usb and it is also jumpy there -- so is it definitely a hardware issue? Any ideas? Should I return it?

Hi, I had a set up with a T480, an Ultra Dock, and three Dell U2518D.These monitors have up to 2560x1440 pixels.One is connected via DP, the other two do DP passthrough. No, it worked for the last 8 month or so.But recently, either after a Windows Update, or a Lenovo system Update, the third monitor can only do 2000x1080. My try was getting rid of Daisy Chaining, so I switched the Monitor to HDMI connection, no solution.Then I tried older graphics drivers, no solution.So either a Windows Update (also drivers through there), or a Lenovo System Update (Driver or FW Update) broke the ability to to 3x 2560x1440. This happened on 4 Laptops, two T480 i5 (intel only), one T480 i7 (intel only) and one T480 i7 (nVidia Hybrid). Windows Version is 1803 for the ones withoug nVidia and 1809 for the one with nVidia. As I tried dockings with the latest FW update, and without, the problem seems not on the docking side. Any ideas? regards

I've seen this issue now 4 times on 3 different users laptops. I had just reset this T480 to factory image for the exact same problem a few weeks ago. System began blue screening right away after being rebuilt.  Now it's experiencing the same problem that I reset to factory for previously. Essentially there is no internet access despite being connected. In a nutshell the system cannot load websites and port 80 looks blocked and many system utilities hang or don't load or work at all. Task manager, windows search, network properties fails to load, etc. Please tell me by now you have identified this issue. Is it windows updates breaking things, bad drivers,  hardware recall? I've combed through the logs and there's a lot going on in there but nothing that's helped me diagnose or fix the issue.  This also occured on an x1 carbon so it doesn't feel specific to hardware or drivers.  Here a list of some of the troubleshooting I've done, I've likely done more but just putting down what I can think of.  Issue occurs on both wired and wirelessWired or wireless shows Connected, secured after connecting to wifinetwork connection details shows that it has an IPunable to open network adapter properties, but can view statusipconfig hangs, if you wait long enough and ctl c it will outputroute print hangsnetsh wlan show profiles hangs but eventually outputsnslookup works fineping hangs to dns nameable to ping website IPs oktelnet hangs connecting to website... The issue:I bought a usb-c to usb-c 3.1 gen2 cable (PD) with the expectation to charge my phone quickly but the power output is way lower than i hoped for. The detailsThis is the exact cable I have attached a screenshot from my phone showing its power input when charging through the usb c port on my T480. And the weird thing is that the special USB-A port supports up to 10W but the USB-C port doesn't come close. Does anyone have a logical explanation or a possible fix?

I would like to know if I can use a USB 3.0 dock with T480 or it must be an USB-C dock? I think to use this USB 3.0 https://www.tutti.ch/de/vi/zuerich/computer-zubehoer/komponenten-zubehoer/thinkpad-usb-3-0-dock/2899... and then maybe exist an USB 3.0 to USB-c adapter? Thanks

Hello mrripe, yes you can use the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock (pro or ultra) with the T480, not necessarily only the USB -C Dock

Hi guys, I am planning to purchase the T480. I am a Linux user, therefore, I will be installing Ubuntu 18.04. I will use VirtualBox to run a windows system which will be used to do word, excel, visio stuff. This will run through out my work day. Apart from that, I will also be spinning up other ubuntu VMs to run / test software and apps occassionally. The config I have in mind for the T480 is as below:- Intel Core i7-8650U Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.2GHz)14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS,Anti-Glare,250nit32GB(16+16) DDR4 2400MHz SODIMMIntegrated Graphics (Intel UHD Graphics 620)1TB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe M.2 2280 OPAL 2.0 So I am opting for the integrated graphics as I will not be playing any games or doing any graphics / video editing related stuff. Also so that I can save on battery consumption. However, I also notice that if I opt for the MX150 graphic card instead, there will be 2 heatpipes resulting in better cooling system. So, I would appreaciate some advise on this. Is it ok to go with the intergrated graphics with the work I do? Will the system heat up if running multiple VMs ?Should I invest on the MX150 for better cooling ? And will there be significant usage of battery with this ?Overall, what is the advise. Also, if I should be patient and wait for the T490 assuming it will be launched in Jan / Feb 2019. I've used the x240 before and I did experience massive heat on the bottom of the laptop.  The X1 carbon 6th gen i...
