ThinkPad X280 Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen2

Q: ThinkPad X280 Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen2

Hello,I bought new X280 which has proprietary connector called Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2. I bought it to leave other ports ready for other adapters, but I have found out, that there is another USB-C port very close next to this ethernet port and when I put ethernet adapter into laptop's proprietary port, there is no space to put second USB-C connector. My question is: If I cut the border of Ethernet Extension Adapter connector, will the USB-C work? Or is there any reason to not to do that? Many thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can other brands of USB-C to Ethernet adapter be used on X280 USB-C to Ethernet port (#3 on the manual) or it must be used with the Lenovo one? Also, can this port be used for other purposes rather than Ethernet?

I recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Extreme 20MF and I have 2 questions that I cannot find answers to. What is the model number of the proprietary Ethernet Extension Adapter for this machine? How do you remove the dummy card from the Smart Card reader and subsequently what software is required to use the Smart Card reader?

I bought my Thinkpad X1 Extreme - Type 20MF - in February 2019, and everything works fine, but since i upgraded the UEFI Bios to version 1.19 the ethernet extension cable does not work. I can see the network adapter in the network connections, the driver is updated, but it says that the network cable is removed. I pluged in the network extension cable and connected it with the LAN, but the adapters LEDs do not blink. They just do nothing.  I pluged in the network cable to another laptop and it works fine. The device manager does not show any hardware or driver problems. Is there a bios option that must be enabled or any other way to enable it? I need the ethernet connection for my work, please help me.

Hello!I'm having a problem with my ThinkPad's ethernet adapter occasionally stopping working. It works normally for weeks and then starts making problems and disconnects. Once it dies I cannot get it to connect no matter what I do. When this happens, in Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections I can see the adapter saying "No Internet Connection". If I unplug the cable, it detects that the cable is unplugged. Plugging the cable back in results in it trying to identify network unsuccessfully until it finally shows no connection again. When this happens I just connect to the same router using WiFi and I can browse normally again. So it is definitely not the internet connecton, it's the laptop. I've tried different cables as well. The same result. Device name: Realtek PCIe GBE Family ControllerHardware ID: PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_004717AA&REV_15Driver Version: 10.3.723.2015 I've tried disabling and reenabling the device, I've tried reinstalling the drivers. Nothing changed this behavior. Does anybody have a suggestion what to do about this?

I have the new ThinkPad x280. I need to be able to connect using a SIM card. My model is 20KF 001LV.  I am trying to figure out if my laptop model supports the SIM option, if it has a nano-SIM card slot or not. There is no indication or way to see in the settings.

A:Thinkpad X280 - nano-SIM card

X280 have a dual nanoSIM and microSD card tray located at the back of the case (check HMM on page 82 for more information). In order to use WWAN Internet connection, you also need a proper WWAN modem installed on the motherboard. Check if Fibocom L830-EB or Fibocom L850-GL is listed in Device Manager.

tl;dr Is the Thinkpad x280 flawless for Ubuntu 18.04? Hello. I recently acquired myself a X1 Yoga 3rd gen with the hopes that I would have a nice experience running Ubuntu. Unfortunately, from day one I encountered issues with it: X1 Carbon Gen 6 cannot enter deep sleep (S3 state aka Suspend-to-RAM) on Linuxhttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-6-cannot-enter-deep-sleep-S3-state-aka-S... Touchpad and trackpad work erratically after I close and open the laptop's lid (suspending and resuming). I need to reboot everytime.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Thinkpad-X1-Carbon-Yoga-3rd-eratic-Mouse-and-Keyboard-... Others that I found about online after acquiring the machine:FYI - Linux May Not Support Thunderbolt Native Mode (seems to be solved)https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/FYI-Linux-May-Not-Support-Thunderbolt-Native-Mode/m-p/... Linux throttling bug (T480s)https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/870u0a/t480s_linux_throttling_bug/ And from Linux's side, poor consideration for touchscreens. Sadly, I have no choice but to return this machine next week. I feel these are nice machines in theory, and I would be willing to give them one more try. I was considering the Thinkpad x280 and I want to run Ubuntu 18.04 again. I would like to ask if any of these issues persist, or any other issues I'm not aware of show up when running Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro.

I am not sure if I'm posting this question in the right section. After signing up, I found it very difficult to work out where to post! Anyway, I am thinking of buying either an Ideapad 720s (13", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 256 GB SSD) or a Thinkpad x280 (12", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 512 GB SSD), and I believe they both have Thunderbolt 3. So I was wondering if there are significant differences between them. Where I am, the Ideapad is around the $1,000 mark, while the Thinkpad is about $400 more expensive. Is the Thinkpad really that much better, and if so, how? Thank you.

Hi all!I need to know the part numbers for the smartcard reader and for the connection cable (I think it is a separate part nr.) as my X280 came with no smartcard reader and it is useful for me.Can anyone help me with this, please?Do you know a trutworthy reseller in Europe where I can purchase it from? Thanks in advanceRM

A:ThinkPad X280 - Smartcard reader part nr.

See HMM(hardware maintenance manual) Page 58 and 81.  That should help you.
As for part numbers try parts lookup.  In the left column Choose "Cards Misc Internal" for smart card reader.  Choose "Cables Internal" for the cable.
As to where to buy you can try Lenovo or once you have part numbers maybe online?
Hope the above helps.

Hi everyone, I was setting up my brandnew X280 and after installing Windows 10 Pro I downloaded Lenovo System Update tool. It proposed a number of updates including a BIOS update and I let it do its job.Last I recall was the window about BIOS update where I hit enter (or ok).The noteboks was sitting in a docking station, battery fully charged. Next time I checked the progress the screen is black and the white power LED is slowly flashing (like being in standby). However I can't wake it up. It will just keep flashing.  As I can't take out the battery on a X280 what can I do? Pressing the power button for an extended period of time didn't do anything. Is there a hidden key stroke combination or do I have to wait a couple of days (weeks) until the battery has run out? I'm afraid the BIOS update failed and the system is bricked, even though I followed the instructions by the letter. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks. Q.

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage.  I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports.  I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon.  I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device.  Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpa... Hi. I got my custom order X280 In July with all features for office purposes and use it just 15 times since then. The battery was never drain in shutdown mode in the first days of use. I remember that after one week being off the battery had the same percentage of charge at restart in the first month of use. Since then whenever I start it I check in Vantage if there are updates and I made the necessary updates every time, Windows updates, System updates, Bios etc. By about two weeks I noticed the battery is discharging between 6 and 8 percent overnight which is quite frustrating and annoying for a three month product. Something happened which consume the power overnight when is turned off. If they are Lenovo employees on the forum please advise me what to do. I would like to know is there is a warranty defect, something that can be fixed by the following updates or something that I can personally change in order everything come back to normal. PS. I have the USB ON disabled from Vantage Thank you.

I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10).
After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed.
The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again.
Any ideas how I can fix this?
Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

I just purchased a X1 Yoga 2nd Gen with a high-end configuration.  In theory, this is my ideal computer for home (which includes a lot of computer modeling work in evenings and weekends).
But I just returned it because I was experiencing a cascade of mostly mouse-related issues.  At times, these issues all affected the TrackPoint, TouchPad an X1 external travel mouse, so they were not device-specific.
I first noticed the mouse would freeze, and display a tiny scroll-bar pointer.  When I'd try to move the mouse, the scroll bar gliff would shift from vertical to horizontal, etc... but the mouse would not move and could not be used.  I would have to force a reboot and repeat until the problem went away.  I seemed to minimize this problem by changing a mouse setting in Devices / Mouse Properties / Thinkpad.  Under Enable TrackPoint, I changed the Middle Button Action to "Use as middle click".  This seemed to improve things...
But then the mouse started rapidly drifting across the screen, and this drifting process would go on and on until I rebooted (often several times).  When the mouse was drifting -- always towards the upper-right -- it was essentially impossible to use the computer.
I also found that the mouse buttons would quit working frequently.  This was most common when I had other processes running.  But the CPU (and memory) was far from maxed out -- I had it at 30-40%.  This pro... Read more

Two ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 TabletPCs will successfully boot into Windows 10 just fine from a hard poweroff.  But once in windows, if i choose Restart, it will hang at the "LENOVO" BIOS  level boot up logo with "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter".   Stuck at Lenovo BOOT BIOS initialization screen, right before handoff to the Operating System. "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" At this point, pressing ENTER does not work.CTRL-ALT+DEL causes the screen to change shade for a moment, but effectively does nothing.Changing the UEFI settings to diagnostics results in black screen.Holding the power switch to force a poweroff, waiting a few moments, and then powering on results in a successful windows startup.  DevMGMT.msc does NOT see bluetooth and there is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" entry under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".  I have run all automatic updates via "Lenovo Vantage" and the manual TPM update.   I can boot into the firmware setup and have had it revert to factory defaults and reverted to factory defaults for all security settings.   I even tried the Win10 repair startup problems, but it says it cannot fix this.

A:ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 does not Restart, requires hard power off. Stuck at Lenovo boot logo.

It looks to me like you have a faulty hardware issue or a serious driver issue. Try the Lenovo recovery to put the device back to the factory windows install. If that fails, I would think you have a hardware issue.

The easiest way for you to find out the specifications of the models you are interested in would be to search for the Platform Specifications for the models you are looking for.     For instance, to find out the specifications for the T470, search Google for "T470 psref" and the search will return a result PSREF ThinkPad ThinkPad T470, which is a document that will give you all the details of the system you are looking for.    Most of new newer models seem to support 32 GB Cheers,

My problem is that I Have a wireless adapter hooked onto the end of 2 usb extension cables that have their own power supply, so its not a problem of range. I've had it set up like this for two months, where the wireless adapter was set on the end of the 2 usb extension cables, and it worked just fine.

USB extension cables

I have a Linksys Wireless A/G USB Network Adapter

Now suddenly I wake up one morning to find the message "USB Device not recognized." This only happens when I have the wireless adapter plugged into the two cables. I have tried plugging it into each of the different cables seperately, and it wont work on either cable, as well as working off the end of both cables. When I just plug it in straight into the computer it works fine. Any other USB device I plug into these cables works fine, weather it be a webcam etc. Just the combo of my Wireless adapter and my extension cables doesn't work. What do I do? But yeah if I have to buy something so be it, I'm just not sure whats wrong in this case. I've tried the most obvious means of solving the problem, simply restarting the computer, unplugging the device and plugging it back in etc. I've tried reinstalling the drivers on both the cables and the device, nothing seems to work.
