Inspiron 3668 remove filler bracket?

Q: Inspiron 3668 remove filler bracket?

Working with a new Inspiron 3668 and trying to install expansion cards. Three slots are available.
There is a hardware wrinkle that is new to me. This box uses a card retention bracket that is attached to the chassis. it swings down and snaps in place--no screw as in the other Dell boxes I have used. Nice idea.
However, the card filler brackets (the metal strips you remove when you insert PCI cards) aren't "floating" the way they do on my other Dells. They are attached somehow, and I see no obvious way to remove them. Do I pry them up or push them in or do something else? The brackets have a cross-shaped cutout as if for a Phillips screwdriver.
The 3668 service manual is quite helpful for many topics, but neglects this one, unfortunately. I appreciate any advice to help me not break anything.

Preferred Solution: Inspiron 3668 remove filler bracket?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If its what I'm thinking of they are 'welded' or soldered on with gaps to use a flat head screwdriver to push them out.

I finally finished setting up my new 3668.  Added SSD and 2TB 2.5" drive, and moved all software and apps from my old machine.
Now when I do a shutdown, Win10 shuts down as expected, but the fans (both CPU and desk) switch to high speed and stay there.  The machine never goes quiet.
If I unplug the power cord it shuts up, but restarts as soon as I plug it in again.  This is not the brief fan blip that normally happens when poser is restored.  First I get the blip, then the fans accelerate to full speed.
What I have done temporarily is to set the BIOS to restart Windows after a power failure.  That way, I can keep the machine on all the time, and if power fails it will just restart.  Otherwise, a power failure would give me full fan speed indefinitely when power is restored.
I would certainly prefer a way to turn the machine off if I choose to - without having to unplug it.
The machine was working properly when I got it.  So, I suspect I disconnected something when I was working inside the case, or inadvertently changed some BIOS setting.
Any ideas??

Since there is only one hard drive power slot on the the motherboard, which cable splitter should be used which can connect to the HHD in the 3-1/2 inch bay and the SSD in the 2-1/2 inch bay, as the two bays are about a foot apart.  Just realized that a splitter cable can be used that would bridge the two drive bays;  This allows the power cable from the Hard Drive to be split into two; with one female end going into the original HHD (hard drive) and the other female end going into the SSD.  Just would like someone from Dell to confirm that this would work before buying the splitter cable and attempting the installation.

I got a brand new computer, Dell Inspiron 3668 yesterday. Downloaded Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for video editing, the only other things on my brand new desktop is my wedding video files imported directly off of my SD card... Davinci Resolve wont even open on this computer without crashing. So, I then tried Adobe Premiere Pro. I finally got it to load without crashing, and edited 10 minutes worth of video footage. I went to manually save the edited files after it of course periodically saved, but it crashed. I thought okay, it saved, it will still be there. Went to open it, the last saved file will not open anything. Just the videos in the Imported Media section... So I open the last auto-save file... it loads the timeline at 6 minutes.. but now it is giving me "A low level exception occurred. ImporterMPEG and some error number" And the media will say "Media Pending" but the audio will play, but none of my media will load. I have tried uninstalling completely and doing it again, it does not help. Once I have Adobe Premiere Pro opened once, and I exit it, the program will no longer open. No matter where I try to access it from, whether it is from the desktop, running it as an administrator, the task bar, the actual adobe creative cloud app its self... NOTHING WILL LOAD! Dell Tech Support is a JOKE! They will not trouble shoot anything for me without paying for it, even though this computer IS NEW! Keep in mind, I have an older dell running the o... Read more

You've got a big disconnect between the hardware you bought and the applications you want to run - basically, you need the horsepower to tow a 10,000 pound trailer and bought the equivalent of a Honda CIvic to do it.  This is an economy model - fine for family usage, but by far not capable of running the applications you want to run.
What you need:  a minimum of an XPS 8930 system with a solid state boot drive, the best nVidia GPU you can afford, and a minimum of 16 G of RAM.  You may also want to up that to a mid-range Precision workstation, though an XPS as configured will do fine by that software.
There is NO WAY on Earth you're going to run those applications on a $400 economy consumer-grade system.  Figure on about $1,500 or so for an XPS configured to do the job right.

I am considering purchasing a Dell Inspiron 3668, but I have a few questions about the power supply first.

1:  What are the dimensions of the stock power supply?

2: Can it be easily removed?

3: Will something like one of these be a good fit?
Corsair RM 850x
I am guessing that my current Corsair HX 750 will not fit.

Any help would be appreciated before purchasing!

You need to look for a system in a larger chassis - just about nothing will fit inside these other than the OEM power supply.

Hello Dell,
I have a Dell Inspiron 3668 with Waves Maxx Audio Pro installed.  I have been trying to figure out how to get RID of the echo/reverb sound that spews forth from my speakers.  I've been reading everyone else's post about the same stuff and the only answer that seems to be given is to uninstall and then re-download the realtek drivers and I think reinstall Waves Maxx Pro.  My question is this: can we dispense with all the install and uninstalls and use something else?  I have no idea what else to use, but the last time I bought a Dell computer I used Turtle Beach soundcard and software, maybe this is an option.  I despise the sound that my speakers are making at this moment.  There has to be some other software that can be used since it appears that realtek and maxx audio pro are fighting each other.  Come on guys, most of us WANT a positive music experience with our computers and I am one of them. Figure something else out for us.....

Hello.  I recently (within the past 2 months) bought two Inspiron 3668 Windows10 machines.  I use them for different purposes in different parts of the house, but they get about the same amount of use.  Both are connected to the network via wifi, and both use primarily Firefox browser. The thing is that I get periodic "Bad Pool Caller" BSOD on both machines.  There doesn't seem to be a specific pattern to the BSODs, but it does seem to occur while web browsing more often than not.I've done all the Windows updates and followed other guidance I found around the internet, but no dice.  Because it's happening on both machines, and no others (we have four other computers who all also use Firefox but have a variety of operating systems), it seems like this is either a Dell build problem or Windows 10.Any assistance is appreciated.  Thank you.

A:Inspiron 3668 x 2 - Bad Pool Caller BSOD

Do you have the latest version of BIOS, v1.4.0?  Did you make any changes to BIOS settings after you got these PCs?
Have you updated the drivers from Dell's Support page? A lot of them were updated in last ~2-3 weeks.
If you're not sure which drivers you need, click the box on that page "Show downloads by Service Tag for factory-installed components" and enter the Service Tag for you system. Note: Use the Service Tag for each PC separately, in case they have (slightly) different hardware to make sure you get the right drivers.
Read/follow instructions to install each driver, but don't use the "download list" option because it can be buggy. Download each driver separately onto the desktop, one right after another, before installing any of them. And it's usually a good idea to reboot in between each new driver.
Drivers are frequently zip files, some of which may install automatically after you double-click them. Others may only unzip the file but not automatically install. So make note of the folder where the unzipped files are saved and if a driver doesn't auto-install, navigate to that folder and look for a setup.exe app to install that driver.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3668 I7, 16Gb ram, Graphics card, 2TB HDD.  I have a 250 G SSD, caddy, and SATA power in hand to be installed.  Power for this SSD comes from the second HDD power jack (jack #8 in the manual.
Because of reasons I won't get into here, I have 4 external HDDs in enclosures with USB 3 interfaces and I need to have anywhere from 1 to all 4 of these drives connected and on-line depending on the application.
I would like to install a 4 port USB3 PCIe card on one of the available PCIe slots.  Problem is these cards require some sort of power (either a molex or SATA) cable to work properly.  One worry I have is the power supply in this system is only 240 watts and I am wondering if it will be enough to drive the USB card and where will I get the power from?
Does anyone have suggestions or comments?

This is a new PC. 2 weeks old at longest.

2-3 times has not come out of sleep. Have had to hold power button to power down. It has come back up seemingly fine. The last issue was, i actually tried to shut it down myself after working on it. It seemed to be working fine and shutting down ok. Got a message saying "to save your work click cancel and go back". I hit cancel to see if there were anything needing to be saved or stopped. Instead, i got a second message stating, "Shut down blocked". Then seemed to have froze. I shut it down holding the power button. Upon start up, it gave me the option to check windows repair, or something like that. I went ahead and ran it and it said, windows repair could not repair your PC. I went and ahead and started it up normally, i noticed that Firefox tried to recover the previous sessions. I have noticed firefox crashing a few times as well.

I ran Malwarebytes threat scan, no issues. I checked malware bytes reports and noticed there were two websites blocked recently, WWW.CONVERTPDFSNOW.COM. Which i do not recall using, will have to ask my daughter if she was trying to use that.

I thought it was unusual for the new PC to not come out of sleep mode so many times now.

My son would like to use his GTX 1060 graphics card in his new Inspiron 3668, so I wanted to upgrade the power supply to something with 600W -- but I gather the original PSU is smaller than the power supply we have (5.9 x 5.5  x 3.38 inches), at least in height and width.  Will the power supply we have fit in this case, physically?  If not, what are my options for upgrading the power supply, to something with 600W?  All ideas much appreciated!

A:Inspiron 3668, upgrade PSU (for Graphics card)?

The case size is going to preclude an internal power supply upgrade.  While you can run a 600W power supply, it's going to have to sit outside the case, with the wires running into the case through an open slot bracket -- and that's IF the 1060 card you have will even fit inside the system and function with the limited cooling in the mini desktop case.
Also check the existing supply - most of these newer systems use a proprietary 8-pin connector to the mainboard, for which you'll also need an adapter for the 24-pin standard plug from the power supply you purchase.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3668 with Window 10 Home.
In the latest Microsoft update: July 11, 2017—KB4025342 (OS Build 15063.483), and the previous one from June 13, 1017, my computer has an issue with the audio.
When I plug in my headphones/earbuds, the audio has an echo type effect to it; the sounds are extremely left or right (there is no balance in the middle). It is as if I am listening to the sound behind me, or in the distance. I have tested this audio with videos, music, and games, and compared the sound balance issue with other devices (laptop, phone, mp3) by testing the same audio files.
I have already reinstalled the Realtek HD Audio Diver and I have adjusted the audio enhancements in the WAVES MaxxAudioPro audio - the issue persists.
The spatial sound is turned off and all enhancements are disabled in the Sound options.
Also, under the “Sound, video, and game controllers” section in “Device Manager,” there are two devices: Intel® Display Audio and Realtek Audio. Is it normal to have both of these present? Is there a method to disable the updates from automatically adjusting the audio?
This computer is less than two months old. I don't want to return it.
Please help me fix this audio problem.

A:Dell Inspiron 3668 Audio Problem

Hi GingerSnapz,Thanks for posting. If the driver is already up to date. This may be resolved by disabling realtek audio in device manager -> restart -> enable. If updating drivers doesn't work, the problem might not be caused by drivers. I just purchased an Inspiron 3668 i5-7400. I need to upgrade to a power supply with at least 360 watts and am having great difficulty because the form factor of this Inspiron's power supply is very different  (about 9"x3.25"x2.5") than most PCs. Does anyone know of sites that have such power supplies? Been searching Amazon, Newegg, etc. without any luck.

A:Power supply for Inspiron 3668 i5-7400

The only way you're going to be able to put that capacity power supply in that system is to leave the actual power supply box outside the system and run the cables inside.
You will also most likely need an adapter to use a standard power supply with the mainboard in the Dell, which very likely uses an 8-pin connector.

Hello, i recently got a Desktop Inspiron 3668, and i immediately noticed this problem:when i plug in the power supply, the pc turns on for just 1 second (all leds on, all fans working) then it shuts down automatically. Obviously there's no boot, just leds, fans and HDD working for 1 second. Then if I press the start button, it will boot correctly and no error message appears.  If i shut it down, it will shut down correctly. This problem occurs every time i connect the pc to the powert supply, or simply when i turn on the power strip. But, if i turn off the power strip (or disconnect the power supply) for less than 3-4 seconds, and then turn it on, nothing happens. No other problem on this pc, complete PSA test passed, complete online test passed. The problem appears even when there's nothing connected to the pc (no monitor, no usb, no keyboard) and any "Wake on" option is disabled from BIOS.Already send it to a dell repair center, where they changed CPU and motherboard.Any idea on how to solve this?my pc has this specs:

A:Inspiron 3668 does a fake start when power is supplied

Do you turn off the computer by using the Shutdown command and not Hibernation that responds to a power interruption and wakes? I'm sure you do but had to ask. This model has a motherboard more like a laptop than a desktop. Its only main power is the adapter--no internal battery power--so you should not be unplugging and replugging. Treat it the same way you treat a normal power cord--unplug only when the computer is off and will not be used for extended periods of time like vacation. When you connect power it might wake the computer if the computer is not completely turned off. Or just it turns on lights and fan and shuts down when the computer is not already on.
It is my understanding that adapters should not be plugged into inexpensive power strips without battery backup. Try a direct connection to an outlet or buy a UPS unit instead of using a power strip. That is much better. Those UPS units can handle power adapters. Like this--www.newegg.com/.../ID-72
Check the bios setting for action after power interruptions. Make sure it is not set to turn on.

I shut down my desktop and both fans spin like crazy, i am sure this never happened before,
all tests passed, firmware updated etc, etc,
Dell support response below.
I have confirmed that it is normal for the fan to spin fast when turned off. It is working as designed, it does this to help the system cool down.
I actually tested my own desktop to confirm and the fan does the same thing.
I find this hard to believe, and frankly want to be able to shut down without the fans going.
has anyone else got this issue? or furthermore can anyone confirm that their 3668 shuts  down fully (including fans).

What's the best solution to get a decent dual monitor setup for our new Dell desktop?
We currently have two AOC monitors connected one via HDMI, one via VGA but the user is complaining that the VGA one is a bit blurry.
Do we just have to *** it up or would using a VGA->HDMI converter improve things?
How about adding a cheap video card with a Displayport port?
Or should i just be able to set the monitor up manually to best cope with the VGA input.

A:Cables for 2nd hard drive - Inspiron 3668 - Idiots at Dell...

You don't need to buy cables from Dell. Open up your case and see what type of SATA III cable is being used and where to locate your new HDD. Do you need a SATA cable with a straight or a right angle connector at the ends? Do you need an 18 inch cable? Does your power supply have an extra power connector for your HDD? After you get this information go to Amazon or Newegg and order your cable; you don't need a Dell cable, SATA cables are industry standard. You will probably save some money and seeing the inside of your computer will help you plan the installation.
Be sure to look at the mounting of the existing HDD. What you may need from Dell is the hard-drive assembly with release tabs if it does not come with a spare assembly. See the Service Manual section on removing the HDD.

I need to install a PCIe Firewire card in a new Z240 but cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the bracket pictured below, which holds in place the Nvidia graphics card.... ....but also holds in place the normal PCI retainer clip. I have searched for instructions on this particular bracket but have found nothing, and have tried gently to move it from various angles but there seems to be no way to pull it out without putting immense pressure on the Nvidia card itself.  In the image below, the button (1) can be pressed down, and it does pull back on the wedge portion (2) which is tucked up behind the rim above the pci openings, but pushing down on the button does not come close to pulling the wedge portion clear.  As shown below, the bracket actually pins the normal PCIe retainer clip in place (1), so there is no way to open the space for a PCI card without getting this bracket off. The bracket also is directly on top of the Nvidia card (2), so if one were to push REALLY hard downward to try to remove the wedge from under the computer case rim where it is being held in place, that force would also go directly onto the top of the graphics card, which seems like a bad idea.  There must be some direction in which one can apply significant pressure to get this bracket off, but I don't want to try and discover it by trial and error, because I don't want to break the Nvidia card. I just installed Adobe Acrobat 4.05 on my IBM Aptiva 500 running Win 98. I then tried installing Adobe Filler and the install aborts claiming that it can't find Adobe Exchange v3.0 or above. What is Adobe exchange? When I look at Adobe's site I can't find it. Of course it doesn't help that their site search engine wasn't working this morning nor the ability to write technical feedback to them. If anyone knows and can help me, I'd appreciate it.

You've installed the full-blown version of Acrobat and NOT Acrobat Reader, is that right?

Did you uninstall any previous versions?
Did you do a complete install? To my knowledge, Exchange came with Acrobat.

why does the form filler remember some of the forms I have filled in but not others?

A:MyIE2 form filler

I assume you are talking about the RoboForm plug-in.

Fillform doesn't "Remember" what forms it fills in. It just fills in information on forms which is recorded in it's identities record when you ask it to. It has no record of which forms are filled in.

Access the "Identities" record by clicking the tray icon and selecting Identities/Edit.

Or in the RoboForm Toolbar, click the arrow next to "RoboForm, highlight "Windows" and select Identities from the pop out menu.
