Windows 7 X64 and Photoshop thumbnails

Q: Windows 7 X64 and Photoshop thumbnails

Does anyone know how to make Win7 X64 display the pictures created in photoshop to be natively displayed as icons? This works fine for 32 bit without any tweaking but not with 64 bit. Has to be a way.

Any help is appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have 3 HP computers, all W-XP home, and loaded with Photoshop and Irfanview.
When I browse a folder in XP, in the Thumbnail mode, – I have no thumbnail displays for my psd files.
To see the psd thumbs, I have to use the Irfanview thumbnail browser.

Yesterday, I was helping friend fix his older Dell computer and noticed that his W-XP will display his Photoshop psd thumbnails in the XP folder browser. He also has Irfanview set as his default Viewer.

I didn’t have time to try to find out why his computer will display the psd thumbs – and mine won’t,
and I'm not sure I would have known where to look.
Until now - I didn't know this was possible.

Anyone know how to turn this XP thumbnail function on, for the psd file types ??

A:Solved: Photoshop psd Thumbnails in W-XP

Thumbnail support for Windows was disabled in CS onwards by Adobe because some users found that their files were being damaged or lost. If you had PS 7 or below installed previously then the psicon.dll (that handled PSD thumbs preview in windows) will still be on the system, hence the ability to see PSD thumbnails.

Adobe has Bridge now to handle PSD & other files - I, personally, don't use it as it's a huge resource hog.

Irfanview can only see the Thumbnails of PSD files if the 'maximise compatibilty' option is checked in PS preferences (on by default), which saves a flattened composite of the image that most image viewers can see.

If you really want the thumbnails back (with the possibility of losing some of your files), then this page has information on where to get the psicon.dll file and how to get XP to load it.

Hi...

I'm an new user to Photoshop CS(Windows) ... I find that in the file browser (I'm looking at RAW images) ... SOME images do not have thumbnails desplayed ... only a generic ICON ... this is maybe 15% of the images...

.... if I select one of these images I can see it in the preview window, and I can open it into Photoshop (via the Camera Raw plug-in) ... but I can't see a thumbnail in the main browsing window ...

... this makes it very difficult to select images for further editing...

... if you know how to correct this problem, or know what the cause might be, please let me know.

Thanks, Peubear

Don't have your answer but...

Are these all from the same camera/card?

The only thing that happened to me was viewing Nikon RAW/NEC files they would show generic in the browser window but not show in the preview window until I added the NEC plugin to CS

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

When I used to view my security camera video card in Vista I would get a thumbnail view of each 10 second video produced.. This made it easy to skip through each video produced and pick out the ones that I thought would be best to check. This would be watched after about a week or so of videos. Now in Windows 7 I cannot seem to find this thumbnail view. All I can see is the media player film type icon for each video. Is there any way of turning the thumbnail function back on. If I changed a picture file in Windows XP, I could go to the folder containing the file and right click on the thumbnail. The option 'Refresh thumbnails' was on the list. There doesn't seem to be this option in Windows 7. I can temporarily refresh a thumbnail. If I change the thumbnail size fron large to extra large for example, the thumbnail IS refreshed but if I change back to 'large', close and re-open the folder, the old thumbnail is back. So I now have lots of pictures with out-of-date thumbnails.

A:How do I refresh thumbnails in Windows 7?

Hi mike-holden,

You can also try the following steps:

1.     Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.
2.     On the View tab, uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails".
3.     Click Apply and then click OK.
4.     Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.
5.     On the View tab, check "Always show icons, never thumbnails".
6.     Click Apply and then click OK.

Please see if the issue can be resolved now.

In addition, it is recommended cleaning up cookies, temporary internet files and temp files. You can use Disk Cleanup to do this. (There is a "Thumbnails" option in Disk Cleanup and you can check it to clean it up.)

You can use Open With on the file type and browse to the Photoshop Elements exe file to have it open the file type with that program by default instead.

Have you checked the View settings in Windows Explorer to see if it is set to either Medium Icons, Large Icons, or Extra Large Icons to see a thumbnail preview of the file image as the icon?

Hi, I'm facing a really annoying and incomprehensible issue.
I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64 bit. Just in case you need this information, I have installed:
1. VLC 2.1.5 x64 (default audio/video player)
2. MPC-HC 1.7.7 x64
3. AIMP3
4. K-Lite Mega Codec pack 10.8.0 (which includes Icaros thumbnail plug-in)
5. I turned off Windows Media Player 12 through "Control Panel/Programs and Features"
Facts:

A) Every single software is up to date, all drivers, all Windows updates... everything.
B) All the audio files (mp3 and FLAC) in my music library have embedded cover arts, which means, they all have their album art inlaid the file.
C) My music library is sorted this way: there's a folder for each different artist/band in the MUSIC folder. Inside an artist folder, there are album's folders, and inside album's folders, there are mp3's.
D) As all my audio files have embedded album arts, there's no need to put any kind of album art or image in the album folder, cause every single audio file has already embedded its cover.

Well, first of all, I WANTED to turn off Windows Media Player 12 because it creates thumbnails and a lot of useless pictures in each folder with an audio file there. That's just awful.
Everything was working fine until a month ago (I didn't have this issue a month ago). Suddenly, one day, mp3 thumbnails disappeared. If I set "View" to "Extra large icons" in a folder that contains mp3's, there are only giant VLC's icons... Read more

Hi. All thumbnails for pics on windows folders have recently disappeared. I have double checked all folder and performance settings and tried repairing Windows photo gallery, deleting thumbnails cache, restoring pc to previous state, changing file associations etc etc. No joy.

When I open the pictures folder, thumbnails appear briefly and then quickly revert to icons. "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is definitely unchecked.

I have successfully installed another picture browser which works fine when I work through it directly, unfortunately I still need thumbnails on the standard windows folders for selecting & uploading pics online, which is an important part of my business.

Anyone any suggestions? I have already tried all the suggestions for similar problems I have found on the forums but nothing so far has made any difference.

My IT support people have had the computer for hours and run Tweaking.com and have not fixed it. We have run three different anti virus tools plus Eset and they find nothing. In addition the Windows 10 update will not download and fails and Skype will not update. As I use images for my business and cannot identify them except by file name this is a disaster. Hi.
I have been fighting with this since I purchased this notebook with Windows 7 in 2010.
I do a lot of photo editing.  I may have around 40K image files on my computer.  When I am doing a lot of editing, a problem arises as the thumbnails do not update in window explorer.  So, if I am working on several images and will open and reopen files, if I have made an improvement on a file, the thumbnail will not update and it gets confusing trying to find a picture that I have just edited.
I have sought suggestions on this issue a dozen different times.  When I troll through forums, this is a  common problem.
Here's a spoiler alert ... cleaning the thumbnail cache does not fix the problem. Matter of fact, here is a classic "cookbook" recipe on how to fix this from another forum ...

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10797-thumbnail-cache-clear-reset.html

As usual, the answer is never found and the solutions move from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Since Bleeping is my favorite stop, I thought I would seek an answer here rather than letting Google find another false positive to my question.

Thanks.

A:Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer

My experience is that the thumbnails reflected by Explorer view...only update when the folder/Explorer window is opened.

I suppose that using a photo album, rather than explorer, might result in the desired updated images you seek.

I tend to give any edited image a new filename, keeping track of them in that manner while also retaining my originals.

I have a rather large (seriously large) collection of anime/manga stuff on my computer, what I used to like to do in WinXP was take a cover pic and slap it on the folder icon so that I could recognize files at-a-glance..

Now the thing is, and I had this problem in Windows Vista also, by the time I get to the couple hundredth file thumbnail, Windows 7 starts forgetting the thumbnails that I'd already set and putting random ones back on the files I've already done..

Is there a way to get Windows to 'remember' my custom thumbnails?

Also I tried a trick I found to deny Windows permissions to the thumbnail's database, it didn't work for this problem..

I'm currently downloading a copy of Linux hoping that it's easier to customize/navigate these hundreds of folders. -_-

EDIT: I downloaded "Ubuntu Linux" and I'm tempted to mark this topic "Solved" but I'll leave it open and see if anyone can answer this... I feel like a fool for not trying out Linux sooner, I'm going to use it for all my picture archiving/browsing.

New to the forum so I'll write my "Comment" in two ways.

(Skip if you hate emotional back-story)Long Version:
I've used XP for going on years now and switched to Vista about 9 months ago. First thing I had to do was remake all my folder thumbnails. I'm a real lover of pictures, I really am. I usually make a individual folder per artist, put the artist's face as the thumbnail, and stuff as much of their works as I can get my hands on into said folder. In XP this was nice and easy, I had the face take up the whole folder and it was easy to remember each person. With Vista it got annoying as my images were placed at a slant and when they were cached they often got lost and started to migrate to other folder (And when you have a public computer with password protected folders for your non-worksafe artists that migrate to your safe folders and replace thumbnails THIS CAN BECOME A REAL PROBLEM). For Windows 7 though I'm stuck...I really am. Somehow or another my folders now hate me and choose to disobeadiantly choose their own thumbnails, at a slanted angle, with 2 or so images stacked together, change when new images are added, and it has made it really hard to see and remember my folders now. Why was such a wonderful feature eliminated to such an extent that it now feels in the way to have the folder not be represented by a single image?

I don't see how DirectX is involved in displaying HDR images. Where are you getting that notion?

What are the extensions on the files you are trying to thumbnail?

I'm getting more and more used to Windows 7. Generally I like to see everything as files and folders; I don't care to see photos as thumbnails. I like to see file name (with extension), size, date, etc. How do I do this in windows 7.

Thanks.

So I go into a folder, and all the thumbnails load up slowly. Then you expect it's built up the cache so next time you go in it's instant, right? Nope! All forgotten.

Every single time I go into a folder it's reset.

I tried deleting to rebuild the cache DB files but they were all locked out, and I can't disable automatic maintenance (which may be erasing the thumbnail cache) as the option to do so isn't available in Windows 10.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Is there any way to change the thumbnail that Windows Media Player (11) uses for video files when viewing my library? It seems to just pick a random frame from the movie, which isn't super helpful. Ideally, I could replace it with the box art for the DVD for example. This file must be saved or embedded somewhere. Any ideas? Thanks in advnace!

Hello everyone,

I love the way that Internet Explorer 8 displays all of its open tabs/windows in a list view when you hover over the IE8 Taskbar Icon, and there are too many tabs/windows open to display them as thumbnails. I would like it to always display the open tabs/windows in a list view. Furthermore, I want my other programs, such as Outlook, where I have multiple items open, to display them in a list, rather than thumbnails, when I hover over the Outlook icon in the taskbar.

Is there any way to get this to happen, even if I have to use a software add-on?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Best regards,

Juan Antonio

A:Display Open Windows as List, NOT Thumbnails

Hi Juan Antonio,

You can do this by switching to a Basic theme: Theme - Change or Save

Hullo Tech Support Guy forum members!

So I've been having this issue for a while and decided that it's finally time I went and found a solution to fixing it.

A quick search in both these forums and Google in general didn't bring up anything relevant--I may have been using wrong keywords of course--but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone can readily help me out!

Here is the issue (click to view full):

As you can see, in explorer, for some reason, if I have Thumbnails chosen as my file viewing method, the Thumbnail will cover up the file name. This is rather irritating, as might be evidenced by the second screenshot. Obviously, how am I to know which file is which if I can't see the image, nor read its name?

I've attempted fixing it already by going to: "[Personalize] > [Window Color and Appearance] > [Open classic appearance properties for more color options] > [Advanced...] > [Icon Spacing (Vertical)]" and then modifying the value to something greater, but it has no effect at all; doesn't move the icons, nor get them to stop covering each other up.

Anyway, any and all assistance would be terrific, and thank-you for taking a look at this!

PS: This overlap issue occurs in Windows Explorer, [Open], [Save], and other dialog boxes. Pretty much anywhere where there is a Thumbnail viewing mode.

A:Windows Explorer, Thumbnails Covering Text

Hi,

See if switching to Classic theme and then back to the original theme helps. If that does not work, follow these steps:

Press WinKey+R to bring up the Run menu.
Type the following command and hit ENTER:

CMD /C REG QUERY "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" |CLIP

The output is copied to the clipboard. Paste the data along with your reply.

Windows explorer on my system cannot display all the thumbnails my photo folder. When the pictures are copied to a newly created folder, all are initially shown. However when I access the folder later, a lot of the thumbnails are gone : only the default
icons are shown.
I have set folder options to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
I have even tried deleting the thumbnail cache and rebuilding the cache but to no avail.
Could anyone help me on this please?
Thanks.
