Q: hard disk drive cannot open - show 'open with' window

I am using Windows XP.

When i double clicking on any of my hard disk drive C:, D:, then "Open with window" opens automatically and it ask to which programe you want to open this file..However, I can type in the explorer bar (where we type website addresses) like C: or D: drive, then it opens.. When I right click on the hard disk drive, some funny character shows in the menu.

It all happened after i install AVG 7.5 and update virus definition.

Kindly help me what happens to my computer and how to solve it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had HP pavillion a867c with window xp and the motherboard died on me few days ago.
So I purchased a Dell Inspiron 580 with window 7.
At the time of purchase, I asked geek squad about my option of extracting the hard disk files.
They suggested two options. Leave it with them and come back later or buy a hard disk enclosure.
I purchased the enclosure thinking that once I transfer the files then I will format the disk and use it for back up/data storage.

I successfully installed the my old hard into the Antec enclosure, and connected the power.
I briefly saw some kind of pop up window but I do not remember now.
Anyway, I saw the disk in the system so I clicked to open it and it appeared that all the folders were there.

My primary interests were in "my document" so I clicked and saw the following pop up message.
"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder.

So I clicked the continue button. The next window said " You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

I clicked underlined "security tab".
The next security tab showed my previous file location in my old HP computer and under it it said "To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object's security properties. Do you want to continue?".

So I clicked continue.
The next window was titled... Read more

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

A:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

My machine O/S is Windows XP SP3 with all current updates.

A few months ago I had a problem with my boot Hard Drive (blue scree and error code indicated lost boot sector). I installed a new hard drive and rebuilt my system .

I have some files that were not backed up on the HD and would like to try to recover some of these files .
The HD is Samsung SP4002H 40GB IDE Drive. I have put the HD in an external Drive enclosure (Sabrent ECS-STU35) and connected it to my PC via USB. When I turn on the drive enclosure:

Device Manger shows a SAMSUNG SP4002H USB Device entry under Disk Drives; and
a USB Mass Storage Device entry is under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
The HD from the Drive enclosure does not appear in My Computer or in Windows Explorer.
The HD from the Drive enclosure does not appear under Disk Managment.
Under Disk Management I do see 2 Hard drives (Disk 0 is a 500GB and Disk 1 is 120 GB) - the 40GB drive is not present.
I suspect that my original problem with the 40 GB HD was a damaged boot sector and partion table.

I am looking for ideas on how to make the drive visible to to Windows XP and also some thoughts on how to partition table and files.

Thanks for your help

A:Hard Drive Not Show in WIN XP Disk Management

how about putting it into slave and then you can use it to recover all files that have not been corrupted by the bad sectors. you can also get your HDD tables by formatting it when it's slave...

although its not clear why you didnt bother replacing the damaged boot file with the install disc, its only one or two files...and if your lazy like me put the install disc in and do a recovery install, it looks like a normal install but it replaces all the original files like bootloader and other things that i cant think of right now...

A user tries to download a PDF from a government site by selecting a checkbox for the document and hitting Download Document button. The file download box comes up with "Downloading file... Open/Save/Cancel". When she hits Open, the box dismisses and the download progress box appears. Almost immediately, however, the file download box reappears but this time Open is grayed out, forcing the user to save it before it will be downloaded and opened. On any other computer in the office, the file will open right up. I have checked the internet settings and they seem correct. What would cause this to happen just to this one user? Or, what can I do to fix it?

OK. So I put the CD in the drive, and it makes some noises like it recognizes it, but then stops. Usually a window pops up to ask me what to do. In this case, I want to install some software for my printer. Anyways, when I click on "Computer" and then my disk drive, it just does nothing. If I right click and click "open" a new blank window pops up, but then closes after about a half second. Itunes, WMP, or anything else I have can recognize it. I have tried using other disks (music, movies, etc...) and it does the same thing. Device manager says it is working fine, but it is not, obviously. I am running Vista and I have checked and I have no viruses. I went to microsofts web site (Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs) and I have deleted the UpperFilters, but the LowerFilters is not there, if this helps. Also, I tried the microsoft Fixit thing and it could not fix the problem. It said "Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media" and then the problem "The drive is empty or the media format is not supported", which i know is not possible because I have tried music, movies, and programs on CDs and they all do the same thing. Thanks for any help!

Hi,
I have a Trekstor Datastation maxi m.u hard disk with a capacity of 500GB. I've had the hard disk for half a year now. I also changed its format from FAT32 to NTFS a few months ago, without encountering any problems at all.

Recently, I plugged the hard disk into my laptop and rather than showing the hard disk by its correct name, it showed it as 'Removable Disk (H' When I tried to open the hard disk, it said 'Please insert a disk into drive H:.' and I could not access the hard disk.
My computer is also unable to detect the file system type as is apparent when I right-click and go to 'Properties'. It can not even see how much free space the hard disk has nor how much is used.

I don't know what this problem is related to, nor how serious it is. I've restarted my computer but to no avail. I'd be really thankful if someone could help me out.
And feel free to ask me for any further details.

I purchased a 500 GB drive about a year and a half ago to hold my backups for my main 160 GB drive. Just about everytime I have to reboot my PC, the 500 GB does not show in Computer. I them boot again and it shows and everything is fine. I have attempted to sort this out but no luck yet. Today I had to reboot and the 500 GB did not show. I have rebooted about four times but nothing. I went into the Bios and did not see anything strange. The 500 shows up as it should. The only unusual thing I see in the setup is that my main drive with the C and D partitions is listed as drive 1 while the 500 GB with my backups is listed as drive 0. I believe the reverse is the preferred but don't know if it really matters. Here is my Disk Management and a prompt that says I must initialize it. The two partitions on the 500 GB are primary if that makes a difference and the prompt refers to Logical. Any help is appreciated as to why the 500 GB is not showing. Thanks, == I just found out how to initialize the disk, but it looks like I will lose my backups. Not a big deal, but I want this to not occur again. Does it sound like a bad disk that might be causing this?

A:Hard Drive Doesn't Show in Disk Management

Normally, one would expect to see the Windows drive on Sata 0, but I don't think it really matters that it's not.

Initializing the drive means it's asking for it to be partitioned and formatted, but the puzzling thing is why did it lose its partition in the first place?

Was the partition on Drive 0 a logical partition?

I'm off to do some investigating.

I'm back, you may find this of use: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc771775.aspx

A:Computer cannot open due to hard disk problem

Do you have all your important files backed up? you CAN re install over the top of what you have and it will just make a new folder for your Windows to be installed to and put your OLD install into another folder.
What is the error that won't allow you to boot up? if it a blue screen? or, is it a specific file that is mentioned?
Some more background to your problem will get a better response.

Not sure what happened, but starting this afternoon, Explorer 9 (released version via automatic update) will not open a link in a new tab, nor will it open that line into a new explorer window.

Looked at multiple complaints and fixes for this, none worked (including the scripts).

What happened today: recent automatic windows 7 update to "allow further updates", I used firefox for the first time - note did not set it as the default, there was a java update and an adobe update.

This machine is windows 7 sp1, completely updated 64bit home premium system.

Turned off all the add ons, restarted - didn't fix it. Tried the script for the same problem, that didn't work. All the resetting has done, is removed the tool bars I like to use and it still doesn't work.

Would like to leave explorer 9 as the default, but this is driving me nuts. (already can't use it for some sites due to the way their developers coded page popups - use safari for those)

A:Unable to open link in new tab and won;t open new window

the new tab is blank, and it just flat out will not open a new window.

Hi guys,

I'm on WinXP SP2 and yesterday for some reason IE7 started showing some abnormal behavior. If you click the add to favorites icon in the toolbar and then click Add to favorites, nothing happens. Yet if you right click on the webpage and do add to favorites it works. Also if you click a link that opens in a new window, nothing happens. If you right click on a link and do open in new window, nothing happens. If you right click and do open in a new tab, the new tab is created but it just stays on "Connecting..." and never loads the page. Firefox works correctly for all of these functions.

Also the explorer.exe process has been freezing when doing routine copying/pasting of files in Windows Explorer.

I figured it was some sort of spyware but Spybot didn't pick up anything and I didn't notice anything abnormal in my processes or startup. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Justin

Hello. I have no idea what's wrong with my computer, so I am not sure what info is relevent. So I'll tell you everything. I downloaded itunes and then all of a sudden I noticed a virus, (no idea if its from itunes but I doubt it). There was a program digused as a windows program telling me that every application on my cpu had a virus. It told me there was something wrong with mcafee and I stupidly got rid of it. Next it said there was something wrong with firefox. That's when I knew it was a virus. My search engines were not working, task manager wouldn't work, system restore failed, and I couldn't download anything. So I started my cpu in safe mode with networking. I downloaded malware bytes, hijackthis, and ad aware bc they have all worked for me before. I used them all. I know I'm not supposed to delete everything in hijackthis, but I did. I restarted the computer and the virus was gone (as far as I know). But when I click on any desktop icon, an "open with" window appears. I have a C++ runtime error... when I try to enter "add/remove programs" I see "c:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found" and when I try to use task manager it says "task manager has been disabeled by your administrator". I restored everything I deleted with hijackthis, because I figured that I deleted something important. I had no luck with that. I used malwarebytes again. Everything works in safemode, everythin... Hi all, been using the option to 'Open command window here' when you Shift+Right-Click on a folder/network location for a long time but funnily enough I've never noticed that it maps a drive if it's a network location you use it at (but sure, thinking
about it, it makes sense).
However I did notice it for the first time today but also some strange behaviour. When I use the option, it's mapping the drive visible and on closing the command prompt, the drive mapping doesn't disappear. My investigations, aka Googling, has suggested
the drive should un-map itself.
Also, if I open a command window using the same method again without manually disconnecting the drive, it maps a 2nd drive which only appears after I disconnect the first drive (so it appears just to change the drive letter). So it's using a new letter each
time I use 'Open command window here' at the same location.
My question is which part of what I described is normal behaviour and which is not? For anything that seems odd, is there a way to fix?
Thanks.

A:Cd Disk Drive Won't Open

Have you checked to be sure that the power connector is properly connected?

If you have a disc in there that you need to retrieve you can open the tray by taking a paper clip that has been straightened and insert this in the small hole just below the tray, you will find some resistance when you push on this, don't be hesitant to push till you feel it give.

here's my problem. i use "syncback" as a back up program. that program requires blank disks to be formatted in udf format, which i did with roxio cd creator 5.3. when i use the fromatted cd in the cd-rw drive it's identified as "easy write". now, whenever i use that disk, i can only eject it during the boot up process...also if i use a program such as "itunes", a message will pop up saying there is no disk in the drive when in fact the udf disk is in the drive...it's like it's not recognized. synckback works fine with the formatted disk, but its the only progam that will recognize the disk. how can i get the disk drawer to eject the disk(except during boot up) and have the drive recognized by other programs when the udf disk is in the drive. i use xp home sp2...thank you

Hello

Origionally i could see the drive but couldnt access it or copy any files now i cannot even see the drive, heres what i origionally wrote:

Yesterday when i woke up i had a BSOD out of nowhere and my computer would boot up so i tried booting into a linux livecd to see if i could see any of my files and i could at the time but i couldnt copy them, now i think everything is much worse, i managed to get the drive into a computer with XP but now i cannot see any of my files all i see is:

My Dell Recovery Partition
and "Local Disk" which shows up as no space or anything its empty with no avaible space:

Please is there anything i can do to try and get some of my old files back? If i could just even get a couple its all i need. I will buy any app i need if i can help any amount of money, desperate.
Right now i have it hooked up in an enclosure because the computer im using at the moment cannot have 2 hard drives hooked up at a time. The drive starts up and spins and not making any bad noises or anything.

Hi, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on helping me troubleshoot my dvd-drive.
If there is a disc inserted then the drive will open without a problem, but if the drive is empty and closed it won't open, the lights will flash, and it will make a clunking sound but thats all. I've tried reinstalling the device in device manager, no difference.

When a disc is in, it reads without any problems, its just getting it open. We need to use the emergency pop-out on the front of the drive (ejecting the drive in windows doesn't help either)

It is a Samsung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U writer, and i'm running XP home on it.

Please, any ideas?

A:Dvd Drive won't open without a Disk inside?

This usually happens because people close the drive by pushing the door, instead of using the "OPEN / CLOSE" button on the front. Eventually, the gears which drive the door to open and close it get damaged or misaligned. You MIGHT be able to repair this by disassembling the drive (usually EASY to disassemble if you know how, DIFFICULT if you don't), but that is probably a waste of time. The gears are plastic (to save cost and weight, and to reduce noise), so even if you got the drive apart, getting everything synchronized and properly aligned would be very difficult, IF the gears were not worn or damaged.

Best bet is simply to replace the drive; I dislike suggesting that people spend money on ANYTHING, but in this case, the deck is stacked against you.

I'm not very technology-savvy. I believe I have/had a virus that doesn't/didn't allow me to open my Local Disk by double-clicking. An error would appear saying "Windows cannot find 'resycled/boot.com". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I looked up my error online and followed the instruction of someone (probably shouldn't have), where I deleted the "boot.com" in my Registry Editor.

However, now, whenever I attempt to open my Local Disk by double-clicking, instead of getting the "Window cannot find...." error, I now get: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association Folder Options control panel."

I have absolutely no clue what to do. Any help? Please?
