Processor fan starts but stops and computer wont turn on

Q: Processor fan starts but stops and computer wont turn on

hey all, im new to the forum but i have a problem. My computer is an e-machines and is about a year old and for the past maybe 6 months ill turn it on and all the fans start up but the processor fan stops and then it wont boot up. Normally i just keep turning it on and off and it will eventually rev up really high and then slow down and then be fine adn work ok. Now its not doing anything, Just over and over turns on and then turns off while both other fans stay running. Power supply seems to be working properly. Doesnt make any noise and i have power everywhere. Any ideas? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Processor fan starts but stops and computer wont turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sounds like the CPU fan is dead. Replace it. In my area a new CPU fan is $20-30.

Over the past few weeks, when i went to turn on my PC it would start for anywhere in between 1 and 4 seconds and then completely turn off. After a few tries though, it would stay on. But today, after many tries it doesn't stay on.

When i start it, all fans, lights, drives turn on/light up then 1-5 seconds later everything just turns off completley. It doesnt even get to the point where it makes that beep sound. I thought it might be my power supply, but i bought a brand new one only a few months ago. i've tried reseating the RAM, cleaning the motherboard area, re-connecting wires/cables but nothing is fixing it.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Hi folks....
Here is my problem. When I turn on my computer, It powers up and before anything flashes onto the screen, it just dies,(everything turns off except monitor). I then turn the switch back off and on and then it powers up normally. This has only happened twice, last time was this morning.
Any idea what might be happening? My system is a home built I got from Sis-in-law. It is a pentium 100mhz w/ 1gig scsi hdd and scsi cd-rom with 32 megs ram. Like I said it works now since I'm posting but could this be a warning? Thanks in advance.

I'd say that your power supply is on the verge of going out. Luckily for those older system power supply's are not expensive. But i'd look into buying a new one soon. Hope this helps.

At first my computer would not reboot. Then I unplugged everything and took out the memory chips and moved it so I could get to it. When I plugged everything back in the computer would start-up and shut-down in 5sec. intervals. It only stopped when I unplugged the ATX_12V power supply to the motherBoard. It is the power for the CPU. It is a Gigabyte 695p motherboard. I do not know if it is the power supply or motherboard or CPU chip. Can you help me?

A:Computer starts and stops

First you can try taking out the memory sticks again and re-seat them and see if the problem goes away.

Another thing, try clearing the cmos and see if that helps as well. Refer to your motherboard manual for the cmos jumper location.

i have an Acer 4420 laptop, which i have owned for a bit over 2 years. its never had problems before.
a month or 2 ago, i began to notice that the laptop stopped charging the battery-- the battery icon would tell me, plugged in, not charging, and would state the current power level. it decreased over the weeks, from 90something% down to 6%.
2 days ago, i powered it on, and the computer started up as normal. got to the home screen, and then shut off.
the laptop will no longer power up; when plugged in, there are no power indicator lights.

i used to leave my laptop plugged in a lot. i honestly did not know any better, until too late. my battery power lost life-- when i first bought it, it had 2 hours of life, on average. later, it would only have power for 40-60 minutes, and much later, it would not stay on longer than a few minutes.

once the battery stopped charging, and held fixed levels, it would not stay powered up at all with no power plug inserted.

another thing- my original power cord broke- a coworker order another for me, but it didnt fit right, so we spliced the cable-- this was over 6 months ago.

my questions- im trying to troubleshoot- could the obvious dead laptop battery be the culprit-- a friend told me that a laptop usually can power up with no battery, when plugged into a power source.

did i burn something out?
what can i check?

A:Acer Laptop Stops Powering Up- Wont Turn ON

If you are using an incorrect power adapter it may not be supplying the proper voltage or current to both charge the battery and run the laptop, and that could eventually have damaged the laptop and adapter too. Did you compare the voltage and amperage between the new and old adapters? The voltage and current info is printed on both the adapter AND the bottom of the laptop. Splicing the end on the adapter automatically tells me it wasn't the correct one, maybe the specs match up but I would be surprised if they did.

Almost all laptops will run with no battery.

I'd be leaning toward faulty or incompatible power adapter. Or a broken DC jack in the laptop or damage to the power circuit. Maybe the first thing to try is to take it into small local shop and see if they have a proper power adapter or a compatible universal they can try with the laptop - tell them you want to try it before you buy a replacement adapter from them. Most shops will have universal units or maybe even the correct Acer one as they are pretty common and shoudl be willing to allow you to test it before you buy one from them, big box stores a may or may not be so helpful.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop, it's a few years old. I'm on Windows 7. The problem I'm having is that the computer will be running fine, and suddenly the computer will begin to start and stop, running so slow that I have to reboot. I can see in the Task Manager that the CPU usage fluctuates between 0% and a normal level. All other indications of the computer 'working' - the processing light on the keyboard, the movement of the mouse, the sound of the computer working - all start and stop in sync. It's like the whole system freezes every half second and then unfreezes again. After rebooting it goes back to normal.

The problem started back in March. At first it happened several times in one week. Then it seemed to go away for a while, and now it's been happening somewhat frequently again (two days in a row just now). I can't think of anything I did back in March that would have caused it, nor can I think of a pattern of what actions trigger it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I turn my computer on and I get the Mobo Logo screen and then my displays turn themselves off because they are failing to detect anything from the video card. Is there any set of tests I can run to check what might be the problem.

This is another one that I'm not sure where to put, but here goes. This is on the same HP ENVY dv6, It does have a replacement power adapter, but it's the same specs as the original and my battery holds a GREAT charge. However, when I plug it in while I'm still using it, it will charge for a few minutes, then stop charging, and then start charging again. Is this normal?? Like I said, everything is working fine and My battery is working GREAT and I've had this laptop for about 9 months now. Could this be a safety feature in Win 8.1 or someting? I am just curious about this as I have never seen this before. Thanks in advance.

This is driving us crazy! We have replaced the motherboard and the power supply, but every time I turn on the computer it will turn on & off on it's own during the start-up process before it finally opens Windows & is ready to go. My son built this computer for me 2 years ago & everything has been fine up until now. He reformatted my hard drive twice in an effort to see if that would help too. We can't figure it out!

my computer recently stops responding and working again randomly, and i dont have any idea why. it just stops responding every 5-30 seconds and wont respond back for about 5-10 seconds, usually when i typ or click something.(you wouldnt believe what it took to write this message) it seems to do it in my web browser(mozilla) and windows explorer mostly(pretty much the only things i use tho). it had strted doing this before but it was manageable i could usually wait it out and it would be fine, but when i restarted it would sometimes not boot, it would stop booting whenever it started booting the drives if im not mistaken. which i might be. system is 2.5 yrs old, used for 1.5 yrs, clean wiped a couple days ago, home-built, all brand name parts, never any previous problems.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit

im thinking hardware failure but i dont know what
cpu hovers between 0-15% up to 40% during freezes
Ram ~1.1 of 2
disk spikes quite a bit(usually during freezes) but thats normal isnt it?
network is fine

i have a spare HDD i can try but thats it... and i dont want to try that until a last resort it would take forevor to backup my data at this rate

dont know what else to tell so ill post this and hope for the best

I recently put in an upgrade to my ram from 512 mb to 768 total Ram. I went to turn it on and I saw a spark where the P1 is at, and now the screen will not turn on, but my hard drive still turns on or runs? Did I short circuit my motherboard? could it be my video graphics card? any help on getting it back to working condition? thanks

A:My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

Make sure you unplug mains lead after you shutdown. Remove the upgrade ram and try starting again. when you say "where the P1 is at" do you mean the power connector to the Mainboard?.

Could be a few things but i suspect you have blown a ram module or the PSU.

I have this problem, when I try to turn my computer on it won't reach Post. The screen just stays black, and the fans spins intermittently. It'll spin for a while, then stop, then spin for a while, then stop, and keeps repeating that pattern.

Once, I got it to reach the... Compaq screen. But only once so far.

Last time this happened, I unplugged the power supply, and the connector pins, and waited a few hours, then plugged everything in and tried again. I'm still trying that, but it hasn't worked yet. But based on those symptoms and that treatment, what problem does my computer have?

built my computer over 4 years ago, woke up one day and my computer would only turn on for a couple seconds before shutting down. stripped it down to:

MoBo: Soyo Dragon Plus 2 (ATX, 478 socket)
PSU: 350w w/ X-dreamer case
CPU: 2.6Ghz Intel P4

still had same problem. replaced PSU w/ 400w, same problem, replaced CPU w/ 2.4Ghz P4, same problem. thought it was a bad CPU because when start it up w/o the 4 pin connecter plugged into the motherboard, it runs the fans w/o powering down.

what am i missing?

I have a laptop running Windows XP. When I first turn on the computer my X-Cleaner program automatically starts loading and running. This is a nuisance to me as I would rather run it when I am ready to turn off my computer. I have read that if I go to the start up folder that is the place to remove programs that run automatically at start up. The problem is the program is not there. I also read that I need to go to the registry if I don't find it in start up. I don't know how to go to the registry and then how to do whatever I need to in order to change this from occurring. If anyone knows how, can you please let me know?

Thank you,

Hello Lyall and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The first thing we need to do is update the operating system on this computer.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.a site and install Service Pack 1a. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates but do not install SP2 at this time. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee. After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

So ive had a Lenovo notebook G50-45 for about 2 years now. Over those 2 years, ive had little to no problems with it. 2 days ago at about 3 in the morning, while I was sleeping, the CPU fan starting blowing like a jet engine. I woke up from the noise and heard that it was coming from the computer. I lift the lid of the laptop, but the screen doesn't turn on. No amount of pressing the power button, moving the mouse, or pressing keys would turn the display on. So, i hold the power button to restart, and it restarts. When i logged in, everything seemed ok. No blasting CPU fan, display was on, and the computer was at normal speeds. I even ran a couple of virus scans. Nothing detected. This exact thing happens on the next night. That's when i came here. Any ideas on what the issue is an how i should fix it? Thank you!

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

A:Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

tuplad89, Welcome to Seven Forums. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest, starting in normal mode. Hold down the windows key(the one with the flag on it) and push the "R" key. It will bring up a dialogue box. type msconfig in the box and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except your anti virus program, you will be prompted to reboot. Do so. Reboot even if not pompted. after reboot go back and make sure everything is still unchecked. See if you notice a difference in your issue.

Next press the start button and open an elevated command prompt ( Start-type cmd in the search boz, right click the cmd entry there and select run as administrator) In that window that appears type/copy-paste sfc /scannow If you decide to type it notice the space between the SFC and the /. If it says it found no integrity issues, type exit and let us know. If it says it found problems it couldn't fix, exit and restart the computer. Do the same thing again run scannow again. reboot. Keep doing that for 3 or 4 times until you get found no integrity violations. It is scanning system files looking for corrupted or missing files and trying to replace/repair them. It may take up to 3 times with reboots in between.

Please let us know the results of those things.

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

A:Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

I recently bought a new quad core (Q9400) processor, and a new motherboard that supports it (Biostar G41-M7). But my computer wont boot when I have the video card (ATI HD4850) installed. without the video card in there everything works fine, but when I put the video card in and start it up the fans turn on but at a reduced speed and it doesn't seem to do anything, no output on the monitor or anything.

Initially I thought it was a power supply problem, even though I was pretty sure the old power supply could handle it I went out and bought a brand new 750 watt power supply but the problem still remains. I am totally lost on this one and don't know what could possibly be wrong, and I've come here for help is there any solution to this dilemma??

A:New processor, computer wont boot

The best way to trouble shoot this issue would be to do two things. 1. Test the system with a differnt video card. 2. Test your current video card with another PC to make sure it's good. Which ever one doesn't work is your issue.

Computer won't start troubleshooting suggestions

Try each one in this general order until problem is fixed:
1) check all your connections including your memory, power connectors, cards, fans and ensure the 4-pin connector for your CPU is installed if your system requires it. If you have removed your memory, make sure it is the correct slot(s). Not all slots work. I don't know if this will prevent the computer from trying to boot. At any rate, every motherboard manual details exactly how RAM should be installed for that particular board. If problem persists:
2) test the power connection with a lamp
3) make sure your on/off switch (if you have one) on your power supply is ON
4) remove the cables from ALL drives and restart
5) also remove unnecessary cards and non-cpu fans
6) Borrow a power supply (sufficient power and appropriate 20 or 24-pin connection)

I've seen this happen when a connector is improperly placed. The motherboard and/or power supply can detect an inappropriate power surge and not even start.
Some people have accidentally joined power connectors to each other, usually when hooking up system fans.

Your system can turn on and start booting to the BIOS with only the motherboard, a power supply and I assume some RAM (though I'm not positive the RAM is requied). It does not even need the monitor, although you obviously won't see what is happening but you will hear the power supply start. In general, with such a fault if the... Read more

It started about a month ago. I usually have my computer running all day and night going on standby when idle. I noticed that my computer was turning off on its own. Several days later i am on the computer and my monitor blinks out and comes back with a blue screen saying:"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down...blah....blah..........MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTIONBeginning dump of physical memoryPhysical memory dump complete"First time i had seen it. then throughout the next few weeks it was doing the same thing from time to time. When i restart the computer, usually it boots up fine. Sometimes during boot up it stops and reads:following file is missing<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exeand over time, occuring more frequently, when i turn my computer on it will not start. I see and hear all the fans working and dvd drives working, but my screen displays nothing. My computer wouldn't even beep. I would resolve this by turning it off and back on. Now, since yesterday it will not start, no matter how many times i try. This all started about a month ago. The only new things I have added in the past 2 months are a new Acer monitor and a Wacom Tablet.I appreciate any help i can get since i need this computer for school.I built the computer over 1.5 years ago. I use Windows XP SP2.CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 2.2ghz2GB DDR SDRAMAsus ATX AMD MotherboardThx again for your help ~Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Hello everyone, thank you in advance for helping me out here.

My emachine 1.7 Celeron machine suddenly did not turn on Tuesday morning and it had just been turned off on Friday night in working order. Pulling the powercord from the machine case, my friend said that he thought he saw an electrical arc. Therefore I think, "bye-bye Power Supply".

Pulling this computer in elsewhere yields nothing....dead! Since this computer is used as a workstation in my business, I replaced it with a new computer. That station is up and running and now I have a computer I need to get up and running to use as a spare or to take the HD out and install it in another computer to retreive data.

My inclination is to replace the Power Supply first. Emachine website has replacement PS for each machine. Should I purchase from them or go to my local computer store and get an better than stock one. Any ideas here would be great.

If I fail I will then remove the HD and move on to retrieve data and use the HD on another computer for data storage etc.

What do you guys think?

Thanks again

A:Computer Wont turn on

If I were you I would call up eMachine's techinical support and ask if your model PC uses a standard ATX power supply. If the answer is yes then go to the store and buy a brand name PS like Enlight or Antec...They are much more reliable and much more powerful in terms of wattage than the PS they will put in it. You'll probably also end up saving money if eMachines charges for hardware service.

My computer won't turn on (not this one I am posting from a laptop) I have tried connecting and connecting all power sources made sure everything was on. The monitor which is plugged in is flashing green so it is definitely receiving power. I fear it may be the power supply or a hard drive failure but have no idea.

I am worried about losing data as well. The irony is I had just purchased an external hard drive and was going to back up that computer in the next few days.

any help would be appreciated

I have been having some problems with getting my computer to turn on when I want it to. When I put my computer on sometimes it will start but wont let me turn it back on again the same day and I would have to wait for the next day to turn it on. But some days it wouldn't start at all.
When I put the plug on and check the power light at the back of the computer the green light would be on and when I press the power button I hear a slight noise maybe the fan? I'm not sure! Then it would not start and when I check the green light at the back and it has gone off.
I have checked all the wires at the back of the computer they were all fine and even vacuumed all the dust away inside , but still have the same problem.
Can anyone please give me any information on what the problem could be.
Thank you ^^

A:Computer wont turn on sometimes

It could be the on/off switch, the power supply or problem with the mainboard/cards.
From what you describe though it sounds like you need a new power supply.  They are pretty easy to install if you feel up to it.
