Recover data from External hard disk

Q: Recover data from External hard disk

Hello!

I have recently bought a 1 TB Seagate external hard disk. It worked very good.
Some days ago I had to format my computer and reinstall windows, so I saved my important data on the external hard disk.
Accidentally, I did the format while the hard disk was connected to the computer.
I tried to connect the hard disk to my other computer, a massage popped up saying "Seagate storage device was successfully installed and ready to be used" , but I couldn't find it in "My Computer".
Then I went to My Computer-Manage-Disk Management and there I saw the hard disk, but it was Unallocated.
I tried to activate it, and then I saw it on My Computer. However, when I double clicked on it, A massage saying "This drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?" popped up. I said NO and then tried some file recovery programs, but with no success.
The only program that worked was "VirtualLab" It found the files, all of them, but I couldn’t save them because I had to buy the program.

I Tried the "Recuva" software, but when I tried to scan the hard disk, Recuva said "Unable to read boot sector".

Please, I really need to recover my files from there, There are some Medical Documents there for my sisters surgery.
Help me up please!!!

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

$40 is actually a very good price if the program can see and promises to recover all the files you need. Free software is free software; sometimes it works fine and sometimes you get what you pay for, especially with data recovery. The ones I would have suggested cost significantly more (GetDataBack and Easeus Recovery Wizard).

Hello,

The USB of my external hard drive was broken and I changed to a new casing. However, it did not show up in my computer anymore and did not show up in disk management. I read forums and assigned it a drive name in disk management and clicked new partition. The drive was now visible in my computer but it keeps asking to be formatted. I do not want to erase my old data and so did not format.I want access to this data back again. My hard drive is fine and makes no noises. Someone please help.

Thanks,

No guarantee that you'll be able to recover your data. Depends on the size of the HDD, it might take a while for the programs to scan it. Be patient.

Found some posts that might be of help. Good luck.

Help!!!!!!!

This evening I did a very stupid thing. When I plugged in my external hard drive, I got a message saying that I needed to reformat it. Without thinking, I clicked yes and allowed the darn computer to start erasing my data. As soon as I realized what I had idiotically done, I had another lapse of judgment and unplugged the external hard drive in the middle of the process.

Now I have a hard drive that is still 80% full and no way of reaching the data… Anytime I try to open the drive, I get a message saying it’s inaccessible.

Is there any way for me to recover some of the data still on the drive????

Any advice y'all could give would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks!!

I had a 400 MB HDD partitioned in 3 parts. Since the last 3 years the HDD was working fine. One day, the computer simply froze at windows XP boot screen. I restarted the machine quite a few times , but it use to freeze at the Windows loading screen of XP.

Then I removed the HDD and loaded win XP on another HDD 160 GB and made it the primary device. Now when I try to connect the earlier HDD as a secondary slave, the system just freezes and as soon as I disconnet the HDD from the cable, the system starts functioning.

I have a lot of data in the 400 MB HDD. Need to recover the data which is there in D and E partition.

Can anyone tell me the process with which I can recover the data from the old HDD ?

hello,
I have problem with my hard disk's chip of my laptop. How do i recover all datas from it.
Thank you.

A:Recover data from hard disk.

You've not exactly explained the situation very well.
are you saying the laptop is broken or the hard drive itself. "hard discs chip" doesn't mean anything in any lingo lol.

if its the laptop at fault you can buy a usb 2.5" caddy place the hard drive in it and use another computer to recover all of your data and files.

if the hard drive has failed and no longer works, theres little you can do. you could try a caddy like above, placing it in the freezer is an old trick to gain a small amount of life from a dying drive.

I dont mean to go on.. but this is why EVERYONE should back up their data regularly. harddrive failures shouldnt result in manic.. it should be "oh well its all safe on another drive/disc/flash drive" ect

Hi,
please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help
Best Regards

Scenario: My cousin just bought an HP MINI 1030NR from good 'ol Best Buy. He wanted to put a flavor of linux on there (dreamlinux to be exact, http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/index.html). He downloaded the iso file from the website and planned on installing it onto his ntfs-formatted external hard drive (80gb). The problem is that he accidentally installed the distro on the entire hard drive, as opposed to a separate partition. As a result, he has lost all of his data, images, videos, docs, etc (about 32GB). Is there any way that he can recover this information off of his external hdd? I am pretty sure that linux reformats the hdd to ext3 or something similar, so i don't know if there is any hope because usually reformating completely wipes the hard drive if I'm not mistaken.NOTE: Now when he plugs in his external hard drive, it shows up as a cd-rom image (see attached image). I have tried the recovery program Recuva, but it only seems to recognize hdd's and won't let me scan the "CD-ROM." I am using teamviewer to check out his pc at the moment, in case any of you experts need more info about the pc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Please let me know if you need any more pertinent information.EDIT: I have attached another image from his pc's Disk Management utility. It shows DISK 1 as being the actual hard drive with almost the full hdd available, AND it shows the cd-rom as something separate.

A:Is it possible to recover data from reformatted external hard drive

He most likely can....BUT... itll cost ALOT of money. The hard drive will most likely have to be shipped to a professional with a dust free environment where he will open the drive and pull info from it.

If it is reformatted the information is most likely written over and gone, but ya never know, if he has about 800-1500 to dump on a hard drive, go for it, but I would just assume it is gone.

Hii everyone.

I have a Western Digital blue 640 GB internal SATA HDD, which showed bad hard disk in startup repair. It does not shows in disk management or device manager when connected via USB port. But shows status as "online" in diskpart when connected via SATA port & when I enter startup tools using windows installation disk. The SMART test fails in BIOS when hard disk is connected internally. I want to recover the data of this hard disk because it is utmost important for me.

The hard disk is spinning normally and not making any clicking noise. Also, I checked via a software called 'Hard Disk Sentinel' that it has about 519 bad sectors & showed 0% health & 0 days remaining.
Is there any possibility of getting my data back? If yes, then how? I'm just a student, & the data recovery experts take a huge amount in recovering data. Please suggest all possible solutions for recovering data.

Thank You.

A:How to recover data of Hard Disk with many bad sectors?

Utmost important data, along with the OS partition, is best backed up at least weekly if not bi-weekly onto trustworthy external media. Where are your backups? If no backups, a local recovery expert working in a serious-minded business-oriented computer fix-it place will probably be your best bet.
Have you ever used any kind of recovery software before? Rule one: whatever you decide to use must not write anything anywhere onto the hard-drive.
There are several very good recovery programs available:
MiniTool Power Data Recovery, Piriform's Recova, EaseUS Data Recovery, and many more. I have pay-for versions, however, you might get results with one or two free versions.

Hi,

Recently my 320GB Seagate Hard Disk faced a problem and had to be replaced.

Am running Win7 x64 on my new 1TB WD Hard Disk. However, there was some important and slightly sensitive data that I still want to recover from my old Sata Hard Disk.

Chronology of events before replacement:

Mid-July: Hard Disk was working fine. I had to go out of town for a month. PC was not being used during that period.
Aug 11- I returned home, but PC refused to boot. Even the BIOS screen or the name of the motherboard does not appear. Just a blank screen. After a couple of hours of replugging in all the hardware and power cables, the PC booted and worked normally.
Aug17- PC refused to boot, repeated the same procedure of unplugging the hardware etc but this time i noticed that one of the connectors of my hard disk appeared slightly chipped off at the edge (cant remember if its the power connector or the sata connector). PC worked normally after a couple of hours of playing around with the hardware.
Aug 18- PC was freezing, every mouse click was taking a couple of minutes to respond. I tried rebooting but the faced the same problem as the previous two times. Unplugged the HardDisk and used an old IDE hard disk to figure out if its indeed the hard disks problem. The old IDE hard disk worked.

I went and purchased a new SATA hard disk which works fine now, absolutely no issues.
But i wanted some of my data from the old disk, so I tried connecting the old Hard Disk back but cant get it to bo... Read more

I'm desperate here, really need some ideas.

We offer B&B accommodation at home.
All our bookings until October were on the hard disk.
That hard disk no longer works!
It does not boot the computer, nor can it be accessed from another computer.
I took it to the shop where I bought it and they were unable to get it to work.

The disk turns, but for some reason is not recognized.
Then the message comes up asking if we want to format it.

The problem began this morning when the computer got blocked up.
I rebooted and got a message about a missing or corrupt ntfs.sys file in system32/drivers (the OS is Windows XP Professional).

I tried all the suggestions I found, like trying to restore from CD etc., but to no avail.
According to the shop where I bought it (the disk is a MAXTOR HD) there is something defective.

Is there any way to recover this data? I really need to or else we cannot make any more bookings.
Would the manufacturer be able to do so?
Are there services that might be able to help?

Help!

Ok, a few weeks ago, I got enraged with my laptop ( Fuj-Siem Amilo Pro) and thumped it with my hand (right near the lower center - presumably where the hard drive is?) and well, it froze up -after reboot and I got some BSOD(blue screen of death) message.. Anyways, I ran the recovery console, recovered about 70% of my files with chkdsk /r (after 21 hours!) and though it did not complete, it still rebooted and I was able to boot windows and use my computer.. so, after two days of successful startups, I was trying to repair and re-install the files that were not recovered, (like MS office stuff, Itunes, etc) when it froze - and I waited for 25 minutes before I had no choice but to turn off at the mains.. I turned the power back on when I got a "disk read error press alt ctrl etc" and have sincxe tried everything you can do in recovery console to sort it; fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk ( said it was fine) chkdsk /r/p - every command relative to the situation when running the recovery console before, the DOS recognized my windows installation ( C: 1Windows) now it just says C:> or something like that.

I went to buy an external hard rive USB ( Maxtor 120GB) and want to know how I can get the files on this USB drive. I need to get that DATA back - and the Recovery console is not going to repair again - (stays a 6% for 24 hours) and I just want to get this stuff off somehow onto the HDD.

A:Recover data from dead HD and dump on to external hard drive

try getting your hands on a 'live cd' like Ubuntu or something.

you have to boot your system from the disc, usually by pressing an 'f' key as soon as you press the power button (on my tosh its f12). then select boot from cd, instead of from the hard drive.

you will probably need to have your external drive attached before you start in order for the 'live OS' to recognise it.

then you should be able to view and perhaps even copy your files to the external hdd. you should even be able to format the original hard drive from here too, then you can re-install windows.

lastly try an anger management course. this really was a bit of a rookie error, wasn't it?

I've got a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra, 40 gig version.
Well, it's messed up. It froze (No big deal, this happens alot), so I take the battery out. Usually this makes it reboot, and things go back to normal.
Well, this time, the Zen decided to be destroyed instead.
Whenever it starts up, I get four options:
1. Clean Up
2. Format all
3. Reload the OS
4. Reboot

1 does nothing, if I try 3 it says "Harddisk problem", 4 causes the MP3 player to reboot, but to no effect, as it just goes back to this screen.

I obviously haven't tried 2, as my entire objective is to recover the contents of the hard drive.

I've got LOTS of stuff on this Zen. (I bought a 40 gig Zen just so it could hold alot of stuff...), and I'd be extremely pissed if I had to lose it all.
Are there any ideas of what I could do to try and recover the contents of the drive? I'm willing to try anything.

The Zen's under warranty, so whatever happens, as long as I get a chance to back-up the hard drive (Which I probably should have done before now...), I can just then send it in to get a new one.

But I really need to get that data.

Hi

I am about to purchase an external hard disk to backup all my data (mp3?s, photos etc..) I have been using CD?s with a drop and drag policy.

Reading through this forum (excellent I may add) I have realized that I can backup everything on my hard disk to the new external hard disk. This is a great idea.

I have an Inspiron 510m with windows XP SP2. The laptop came with SP1 and I uploaded SP2 from the Microsoft site. This took a while as I have only dial up. I also have MS Office 2003 which I have downloaded patches as they become available from Microsoft. I also have antivirus, firewalls software.

Just a few questions if I may;

1. If I use the external hard drive as a backup of everything on my internal drive, and my internal hard drive goes up in smoke, will the external hard drive work as my primary boot up drive?
2. By having both hard drives as images of one another, will there be conflict on startup?
3. I do not want to spend hours installing software, music, photos etc if the laptops hard drive suddenly gives up. So am I on the right track by backing everything to an external hard drive using the XP backup facility.

As you probably can tell I am a little green about this sort of thing. But all I am trying to do is make life a little easier.

Thanks in advance

A:Backup Data With External Hard Disk.

Hi padraigl.
I'm just going to assume you're talking about an external usb drive?
Unless your system supports booting to a usb device, then no, you won't be able to boot from it.
Enter cmos setup (bios) and go to the boot section to see if usb is in the list of supported boot devices.
It's possible the info may be in your manual as well.
I have a somewhat older IBM laptop that can't boot from a usb device.
I use an external 2.5 drive enclosure that contains another drive compatable with my current notebook.
If my old drive pukes, I just take the backup drive out of caddy and stick it in my laptop.
5 Minutes and I'm on the new drive.
Backup software is a matter of preference. I don't trust the MS backup utilty as I have seen problems with it.
I prefer Acronis or an older version of Ghost.
In any case, glad to see you take backup seriously, too many people don't.

Since then, the HD isn't responding and not getting detaced by my comp. I tried connecting it to other machines also but no luck.

My guess is, only the in-buit motor of the HD could have gone short becuase of connecting it on a running PC but Data should be safe. Is there anyway to recover the data stored on it.?

Please advise.

Vacky,

Please click on the Windows 7 Start button and then on Control Panel
In Control Panel, select the Folder Options link.
Click on the View tab in the Folder Options window.

In the Advanced Settings area, locate the Hidden files and folders category.
Check: Show hidden files, folders, and drives
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Click Apply and OK at the bottom of the Folder Options window.

Disconnect the problem USB drive for now.

Next, download UsbFix:

In the next step, a window requesting the connection of removable drives appears. Please connect the problem USB drive when requested!
Right-click the downloaded USBFix file and select: Run as Administrator

Hi,

Though the Device Manager shows the HDD under Disk drives, the Disk management shows it as Disk 1 Unknown with no driver letter and Not initialized. On clicking to initialize, it gives i/o device error.

I have Mini Partition Wizard installed on my laptop that too does not detect any drive.

After reading some more threads and using probable cause, these are my most likely scenarios and my reasoning for them as well.
-A week before I had the issue with the WD HD, my younger brother moved my laptop bag and it fell with my laptop inside. I turned it on after he told me so I could check it. Everything seemed fine except the hard drive was missing. The laptop is a HP dv7-3065dx with Win 7 x64. I could see it in BIOS but could not access it. I went into the diagnostics menu and ran the HD tests which it failed. I could not use start up recovery because it said there was nothing there. The recovery partition was not usable either. After doing some research, I thought the hard drive had died and needed to be replaced. I just found that to be unlikely and it was. With a little more searching and some luck, I found out what happened and is something that can happen to hard drives(especially Western Digital which it was). The hard drive had basically locked itself. After making the primary partition active again, it booted right up and has worked just fine.
-I had my WD 1.5 TB MyBook external hard drive in laptop bag. To be clear about this external hard drive, I had roughly used 1.3 TB of space for programs, movies, music, gaming, etc. This was formatted NTFS I believe and even though this drive was only used for storage, it was MBR and not GPT(I specify this for what I will do to it and have no idea if it matters). It worked just fine before I left with it. I was not rou... Read more

I have a 160 GB Seagate external (149 GB) I got about 133 GB of data Help me recover it please or point me to a recovery thread

A:Formated my external. Please help me recover my data.

any free data recovery software should do the trick, provided you haven't overwritten the HD. Bear in mind, the longer you wait, the more difficult it is to recover due to the fact you might overwrite some of the files.

My Passport External HD suddenly failed.

- Replaced cable. Apparently this is not the problem.

- I have tried on another computer with same result.

- Light on HD is on but no sound of turning or no clicking sound.

- HD is recognized only in Disk Management. It does not show up under drives when clicking My Computer, thus I cannot access the drive.

- I downloaded Easeus Data Recovery (Trial) but when scanned does not find drive for Passport.

- I have not contacted WD, but searched their site for solutions/troubleshooting. Basically, they say use data recovery software. I do not want to pay many $$$ to send to a professoinal.

Anyone know of a Data Recovery Software or have ideas how I can access My Passport ? Thanks !

(Note: Passport is only about 15 months old and not really used that much. Not sure I would recommend WD to anyone)

Try this: Rescue Kit Free Edition | PARAGON Software Group - free partition software, hard disk partitioning Else you can also try Recuva.

As what does it show in Disk Management. Best if you could post a picture.

Hi All,
I accidentally formatted my Seagate Ext. HDD!!!! As you know my life & more is on the drive... all stored safely on this 'offsite' back up drive!' There is another back up on DVD but that doesn't have all the info, so it will help but not by much! I don't want to take the drive to a technician, they charge way to much, for something that can be done on my own computer - I have Windows 7 and a Toshiba laptop.

I have looked at some data recovery sites and recommendations; am undecided, what is the best software to use for the Seagate FreeAgent HDD?

My question: Is there any ultra-reliable free or low cost software that can retrieve my data this HDD??

Thanks;
TJ

So i was reformatting from Vista back to XP x64 because a piece of my hardware was incompatable with vista and kept crashing. I go to delete the partitions of my internal HDD and i forgot that my External HDD was still plugged in and i deleted the partition of that too. I got pissed and restarted my comp. I had to go back thru the partitioning and i recreated the partition for the External HDD along with my internal and all that. My question is, "Is there any possible way to recover the data from a repartitioned drive?" I have not yet reformatted the External HDD. The data should still be there, but the indexing is gone? IF anyone has a way to recreated the index it will be much appreciated.

Hello,

I run a Windows XP with NTFS Partition. I have got a Zip disk in which a few clusters in the middle have somehow corrupter,I guess it is the click of death, known to be associated with zip-disks.

As soon as any application tries to read in these clusters, the zip-drive goes vanishing, so I need to eject and re-insert the diskette to make it recognisible. I am not able to make even complete image of the drive.

Which software should I use to recover these files?(are these files recoverable?). Im trying to scan the disk with "Trouble In Paradise(TIP)" but it doesnt recognise my internal IDE zip drive.

i tried "ASPI_ME" & "force ASPI", still "TIP" doesnt recognise Zip disk. Can spinrite recover my data? if so how to make myNTFS machine run dos? and how to make spinrite detect zip drive in DOS?(i.e how to mount zip drive in dos?)

im not able to find the guest.exe utility to run it on DOS.,

Best Regards,
Krishna.

I have problems accessing files in my removable devices (USB/flash disk, SD, external HDD). Files not inside folders can be opened but those inside folders cannot. My folders became shortcut links and I cannot open them to access my files. Below message appears:

Windows cannot find 'J:\.Trashes/b3fdadef.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

There are also additional shortcut links created inside the removable device, like .Trashes.

The virus seems to be: Worm:Win32/Dorkbot.I. And it seems to create random .exe files.

Does this mean files in my removable device are now corrupted? I believe my files are still there, as seen during virus scanning or by checking disk usage. Help please on how I can remove this virus and view and access my files and folders properly. Critical is my infected external HDD, which are basically all my pictures, videos and important documents.

Thank you so much and hoping for an immediate response.

I have two identical drives a C and a D drive C was set up as primary and D as secondary. The C drive had winxp pro and my programs on it and the D drive was my storage drive for all my music and important files. I decided to reinstall winXP on my C drive and it kept giving me problems so I decided to install Linux Fedora on it instead. I am getting an external drive in a couple of days and figured I'd just reinstall winXP on the C drive and remove fedora when it got here then move my music and data from the D drive to the external. Then I would reformat both C and D drives and sell them. When looking in the case I mistook one for the other and reformatted my secondary D drive, then installed fedora Core onto it. During install I instructed it to remove all OS's and reformat everything. I had about 28 gigs of data and fedora core is only .5 gigs or so.

Now I have my D drive formatted with Fedora core and my C drive as it was with Win XP and my programs.

Can I set the C drive as primary again and plug in the D drive as secondary then from disk management change the D drive back to a windows format like NFTS or what ever and then run some program to get my data back?

Please Help all my stuff is on that disk.

A:Help! need to recover data from formatted disk

It would endanger any remaining data to try to change the file system yet again. Chances are you may have lost the data the first time.

Try scanning the drives with these programs. Look under the "Others" menu in Restoration and choose "Scan All Clusters". These are free and good and will give a good idea if anything remains of your files (if they allow access to an Ext2FS file system from Windows---I don't know).

I have a machine with a dead motherboard. I would like to copy my data to a new machine. My old machine two hard drives configured in a software RAID (dynamic disk). Do I just plug one of them into my new machine, or do I have to do something first since it was part of a software RAID?

A:Recover data from Dynamic Disk

If it's a "regular" dynamic disk (as in just a dynamic disk, you didn't RAID it in anyway in previous Windows installation) then you should be able to import the volume directly. I've done this many times back in XP.

But if it's a part of a RAID volume (other than RAID-1)... you are out of luck...

Is it possible to recover Data from a scratched disk?
Or, if it's not possible, is there a good program for this issue? Because, there are several programs on-line, however which program is good for a non-expert DVD issue along with computer's?

Any help on this issue would be truly appreciated.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

regards,

I just transfered some data from Maxtor OneTouch II to my computer, but suddenly it stopped and showed raw datas. Then I restart the windows XP and tried to fix it when it booted up (it said that some of the files and chain files are truncated - I don't understand what that means to my data ) . So now, the external drive no longer show raw datas but a folder named found.000 filled with thousands of "chk" files and a file named &2&2.

I then tried the latest Powermax from Maxtor, but it turned out that Powermax doesn't detect external harddrive (Mine is USB2.0). So no luck there?

Is there anyway to recover the data back? Or am I pretty much out of luck and have to reformat the HD ?

A:External Maxtor OneTouch II 200G corrupted - How to recover the data?

Those check files can be opened in Notepad. Although as it is in fragments you only find some pieces of readable text. All this can be cut and pasted, but a laborious job. It could be transfered to desktop (if you have one) to run Powermax to see if that would have more success.

I am trying to recover data from laptop internal HDD use as an external hard drive to recover data from that HDD. I can't see my HDD in my computer but in DISK Managemnet, there is a message, "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initizalized"

Please Help!!

Thanks,

A:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 byte. Have a 1 tb external Seagate drive connected with USB 2. Disk capacity is showing 925GB. Have lost 75 GB. Is there a way to recover the the lost 75 GB?

A:Recover external Disk capacity

Welcome to Seven Forums.
You have not lost any capacity, the difference is the way drive makers and Windows measure it. Windows uses binary system and makers use decimal.
Example:
Binary, 1MB=1048576 bytes
Decimal 1MB=1000000 bytes
Windows would show a decimal MB as 976.5KB
The drive may have some native files that came with it too, like encryption and software.

Hi, I recently bought a 1TB external HD and after about a month it has stopped working. It's now making loud clicking noises like metal on plastic, my laptop is not even recognizing it anymore. I tried switching the power supply and the USB cords, nothing makes the slightest difference. It just starts up, then starts making loud beeps and clicking noises. Not even an error message. Is there anything I can do to fix it or at the very least recover the data?

A:LACIE external HD not working, loud clicking noises, how do i recover data?

Hopefully, you have backups. Chances are not good for recovery if there are noises. You could try connecting it to your PC internally.

The hard drive is made by a company called "BSE Data Storage" 40 gigabyte IDE. When i try to boot to it, it says S.M.A.R.T Command Failed.

Not sure on jumper settings but when i boot to slave (guessing with jumpers although pretty sure it is correct), windows detects the drive in the device manager but no where else.

I want to extract a few imporant files off the hard drive.

The hard drive makes no ticking or scratching noises, other than the normal noise it should make.

This occured when i was trying to install a printer driver, other than that computer ran fine.

Im running Win XP on the computer and the bad hard drive.

Please Help.

Thanks,
Rio
