Yoga 900 External Monitor Issue: Won't Connect, Screen Flashes, Turns Black

Q: Yoga 900 External Monitor Issue: Won't Connect, Screen Flashes, Turns Black

Hello! When I connect my Yoga 900 laptop to my Samsung external monitor using a USB-C/HDMI adapter, the laptop screen flashes black and the external screen does nothing. Between the flashes I can see my desktop background goes blue and every program/file that is open begins popping up and closing on repeat. Nothing ever shows on the external monitor. The only fix is to unplug the two, but if I let the laptop flash for more than about a minute it eventually goes black. When this happens, unplugging it from the monitor does nothing and it has to be manually restarted using the side button. As noted in other forum solutions, I manually updated all video and chip drivers.I have tested the monitor's HDMI port, the Yoga 900's USB-C port, and the HDMI cable itself. I have also tried a different brand of USB-C adapter. Pressing Windows + P doesn't seem to do much, as I can see the menu between the flashes and click "expand" but nothing happens. Any idea what else I can do? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

basically what happens is I will use my laptop for a few hours and eventually the screen will flash black and sometimes the resolution changes. Sometimes it will flash back on and work for a bit longer but most of the time it goes black but keeps running and I have to turn it off. Any way to fix this?
Edit: also sometimes after the screen comes back on I can't open any applications

The issue started yesterday, I had torun to the store. When I got back I moved the mouse and the screen went black. Turned the tower off and back on, it flashed the vista boot up screen then went black. However I know the computer was running because I heard skype log in. I fixed it by pressing f8 during the boot up screen.

Well the problem happened again this morning, woke up, moved the mouse, black screen. However this time f8 didn't help at all. I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix this. I have windows vista.

Greetings, I have a Lenovo Yoga 730 15 with 4K and NVIDIA GTX 1050, which has a screen that blacks out at random. Based on what I read in other threads, it could be an issue connected with the auto-brightness and auto-dimmining settings. So, I turned those features off. Though it has been happening less, it's still happenning. Could anyone tell me what other settings I should check to resolve this issue? Thank you for your help.

I recently changed the Catalyst Control Center settings (can't remember exact changes) and now my screen goes black for 2-3 seconds at a time randomly. I removed the display driver and Catalyst Control Center and let Windows Update install a new version on a reboot. I've had the card for many years with no problem like this before.

How can I erase the entire video driver/software configuration and re-install it to get back to normal?

Thanks in advance,

Assuming you have the current Catalyst driver downloaded for your "legacy" HD4670 and ready for use in a reinstall, one clean way to remove all existing AMD software and drivers guaranteed is to use "Driver Fusion" from Treexy (this used to be called "Driver Sweeper").

It comes in a free version, and there also is a non-free premium version. The free version is sufficient to remove everything for the supported audio and video vendors, including of course AMD, nVidia and Intel on the video side.

You click on "Maintenance", and then "Driver Family", then "Display", then "AMD". Follow the "delete" process from there, and when it completes you reboot. You've now completely removed every trace of AMD, including from the Registry.

You can now reinstall your Catalyst driver from scratch.

Hello, I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 910 for some school/ database work. My plan was to, at my home office, have the laptop plugged into my TV via USB Type-C and HDMI cord. I cannot remember exactly what had happened when I first connected the HDMI cord, but I do remember that the laptop could not pick up my TV's signal, and I had accidentally set my laptop to display what was on the second devices screen(TV which was not detected). Now, whenever I plug the USB-C/HDMI cord from my laptop to the TV, my screen is black and I cannot reverse the mistake I had made. Does anyone know a method to fix this without reseting my laptop? Thanks!

If this was just a configuration issue, doing a system restore jumping back the setting to a previous date would restore it back without you losing any files.

Hello everyone, I'm new here, and I want to start by saying I have minimal experience with my computer (I just built it yesterday using a YouTube video to guide me) so when replying with an answer, don't hesitate to ask obvious questions.

I built my gaming computer yesterday, and it turned on, I installed Windows 10, and everything was working fine. However just a while ago, I took out one of the smaller cables that goes into the CD drive (not the one that supplies power, but the other one) and connected it to my hard drive, because I only had two of those cables and one was going into my SSD. I wanted my computer to detect both hard drives, so I went into the BIOS, and I saw that it acknowledged both hard drives, and then I clicked save and reset. Unfortunately, the new problem is, my monitor won't display anything. It was working 100% fine, and all I did was change the smaller cable from the CD drive to the hard drive, and now my monitor won't display. The cables going into the SSD and the HDD are both connected into the SATA ports on my motherboard, and they both are also connected to my power supply. I have checked to see if it was the monitor by some unlucky chance, and it is working fine (I plugged it into another computer, using the same power outlets, so it's not the outlets either). My computer turns on, and I hear no beeps or anything, and my screen does not display "no input" or anything like that, it simply has a black screen, the monitor is on, and c... Read more

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have a Yoga 11s that started having hdmi connection issues about a year ago and has recently quit connecting to an external monitor via HDMI completely. We tried upgrading to Windows 10 to see if that would overwrite any software issues - no luck. The HDMI port actually appears loose. I did an extensive search of the forum and found posts that recommended cutting down the rubber around the base of the hdmi cord - tried that and at least I had a little activitiy - in the upper right hand corner of the external monitor up popped a box that says DVI then VGA then HDMI - but then says No Signal. Tried the graphics card update recommended on a post from long time ago and a popup indicated I had a newer version already installed. I have taken it to a laptop repair place - said they couldn't get parts from Lenovo. I found an "authorized" Lenovo repair shop locally - when I called they said they only work on business machines Called Lenovo and they told me to take it to Best Buy - however since I purchased this directly from Lenovo, Best Buy said they can't work on it. I would rather not send it into Lenovo because they tried to charge my hubby hundreds of dollars when his 15 day brand new laptop quit working, claiming damage - luckily extensive pictures taken and dated prior to sending it in thwarted that attempt at extortion. Does anyone have any suggestions? Hey guys,

So I have an LCD monitor that's decently old (4+ years, but only 2.5 years of use). Whenever I turn it on, it works for a decent amount of time, sometimes up to 45 minutes to an hour. However, after that time, the screen will just turn black. My computer will still be running normally, I just can't see anything on my monitor. The LED on the monitor is still green.

If I turn off my monitor and turn it back on, it will work for X amount of time. X depends solely on how long I leave the monitor off for. If I turn it off for 10 seconds and turn it back on, the monitor will work for about 2 seconds. If I turn it off for a whole night, it'll work for about 45 minutes again.

Other monitors have worked with my video card, albeit they were DVI and not VGA (which is what my current monitor is).

So what is the problem? Is it because my monitor is too old? Is it fixable? Thanks.

Jeremy

Hi Guys, I need some help here. My PC is screwed. After reading a bunch of loading screen problems I saw that all of them were problems that occurred after the XP loading screen happens. But, after around yesterday night I got up and used the computer, and when I was done I put the computer into standby mode and went back to bed. A few hours later I woke up, and still a bit sleepy I got up, turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down, all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything; I was sleepy. Then, today when I started my computer, the computer booted up as usual, and I saw my ASUS loading screen, and the the flashing _'s that happens when my computer loads when I start it up. But then, it just goes blank. I tried restarting the computer and try again, with the power button turn off, which just turns off when I press it, unlike when my computer is acting normally, which takes a few seconds. Can anyone help me? I just hope my hard drive isn't fried or anything. Thanks!

A:Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen

Could you explain this again please"?
"turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down, all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything"

Do you mean you pressed the power once then held it for 4 seconds? Do you normally turn your system OFF this way instead of using Start /Shut Down?

Sounds like this is a desktop, recommended practice is to turn the monitor ON then the system, after use, turn the system OFF then the monitor.

Standby, Suspend to RAM and Hibernation where windows is concerned, do not always work and are highly hardware and setup dependant.

I have been using Samsung SyncMaster 740N 17" LCD monitor for about 2 years.
I have Windows XP SP2 installed with UBuntu (installed with wubi).

Everytime I boot, the vendor screen first comes ( Lenovo) and then there is no display. The monitor power LED flashes
continuously. Then, the first operating system in the boot menu loads up after sometime and till I get Windows XP loading
screen, no display comes in the monitor and it is just black & the power LED flashes. Sometimes, I dont even
get the Operating system loading screen. Its just black after the Vendor screen comes. Then I have to restart it using
the button in CPU to reboot it again to see if everything works properly atleast in the next time.

What could be the problem. Is this a problem with monitor or operating system. Please help.

Hi, I'm new here. I have a x230 Thinkpad whose keyboard is no longer working completely (some letters, arrow keys, and the space bar) after liquid was spilt on it. Now, we purchased an external keyboard and initially, it had worked well. Some time later tho, the built-in mousepad started to lag (sharing the same fate with the above dysfunctioning keys), so we bought a wireless mouse, too. When these two are used together, the external keyboard fails to work. Then, when only the external keyboard is plugged in (bec the mousepad works), as I press any letter/key, the monitor turns black and the laptop goes into sleep mode in no time. When I press the power button to unhibernate, the screen goes back to normal, until I press any key again on the external keyboard that it goes black and sleeps again. It's soo frustrating esp. when I need to type in MS Word. I tried to search for any troubleshooting for this but can't find any in any thread. The only thing that helps now is the on-screen keyboard, yet it's time consuming and distressing esp. when I need to meet a deadline. I hope someone can help me with this. Thank you in advance. Jane

A:Thinkpad x230 screen turns black then sleeps when external keyboard is plugged in

Hi, Sounds like liquid splitting on laptop's keyboard lead to short circuit that any input signal from physical keyboard, including the external one, wrongly redirect as the power button and make Windows go into hibernation.Try to totally dismantle the laptop keyboard out and test if the external keyboard works. If it works, and your laptop connected with a docking that have power button on it, you can keep working with this setting. If not, you probably need to replace a new laptop internal keyboard.

Help please - on switching on screen shows "Dell logo and Windows is starting" then screen goes black, two small blue boxes as big as downloading progress bars with the words "input not support" between them start to scroll round the screen. Mouse does not work and I am unable to do anything to try to correct problem. I am using Dell OptiPlex with Windows 7 Home with AOC monitor.

I have tried plugging the AOC monitor into an Acer laptop and this achieves whatever is happening on laptop screen being duplicated on the AOC monitor but both screens can then only be controlled by the wired mouse connected to the laptop with no response from wireless mouse used on AOC monitor. Having achieved the above am I, with my virtually non existent pc knowledge, correct in assuming that my monitor problem is due to a windows system problem???

Any assistance, in the simplest terms, as to the cause and corrective procedure to solve this problem would be very much appreciated

Hello everyone.  I enjoyed this laptop for about three years now, and couple of weeks ago it went on almost-black screen at startup; power and keyboard lights were the only sign of residual life. First reaction was panic... 200gb of photos and other personal docs were stored there! I've been reading so many posts about Lenovo laptops with similar black screen issues and tried multiple resolutions getting no success. Here it is a summary of my laptop?s symptoms and what I?ve learned so far: - the screen flashes once on start up showing the Lenovo logo very quickly, then it get definitely black (actually backlight seems on and I can adjust brightness, but no content at all). This occurs both when plugged in and on battery power. - no content is visible on the screen in any situation, either in a dark room or shining a bright light into it. - I disassembled the mainboard and the LCD connector seemed correctly installed.- I disconnected the battery and repeatedly discharged any residual energy by pushing the power button up to a minute, with and without battery / power cable connected.- I finally connected the laptop to a TV via the micro-hdmi port and was very happy to see the output display there, so could realize that the laptop still works and SSD/data were safe!! Of course the laptop?s screen remains black...- I then tried refreshing the video drivers and removing t... Read more

Hi, I have windows home 7, home built pc with Asus motherboard. Don't ask me further spec details cuz I have no idea about most of the specs (an ex built it and can't get in control panel due to monitor issue). I just know that it's supposed to be kick-*** with a 5.8 windows score.

The PC boots fine, gives you the option to start windows normally or leave it do its' thing... but either way I try, it makes no difference to monitor.
When it boots, the monitor shows all the usual details, the bios pic, starting... and as soon as it reaches desktop point (I think), it goes black even though monitor is still powered and no errors about no signal. If I turn monitor off and on, it will quickly show me the desktop then it goes black again.

I'd appreciate any help or insight.

Hi, first thing I would try is to connect the PC to another monitor that is known to be in good working order. If the same problem occurs then we will know it is a problem with the PC, if it functions normally you will know it is a problem with your monitor.

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

This is described as a power-saving feature, but in reality its a great way to ensure that the OLED screen doesn't experience burn-in over time when on-screen items are displayed for prolonged periods. However, when I connect to an external monitor (which is almost always), the Task Bar Dimmer and Background Dimmer ONLY affect the external monitor and no longer affect the OLED display, where (IMO) this is far more important. Am I missing something, or is this a bug? Dimming the taskbar on the OLED is far more critical than on my monitor.

I have the new Acer Aspire laptop and a TV which I use as a monitor. They have worked together very happily some time now. But yesterday I had to do a forced shutdown when the start button would not work and the TV screen shrank in size and there were error messages. When I rebooted, the TV monitor stayed black and a computer screen came alive for about 10 seconds as it was rebooting, then went black. I disconnected the TV from the computer and started her up and the computer screen behaved itself.
Even if I set all of the display parameters to indicate only one screen (the computer screen), if the TV monitor is connected to the computer, I end up with two black screens.
I have tried many display duplicate and extension.
No new software installed.
There is one clue. I disconnect the TV monitor from the computer, boot up, choose duplicates to display. Then I connect the TV monitor to the computer. What happens, for about one second, is that both screens light up.
What is going on? Help please.

A:Both laptop screen and external monitor go black

If you are still getting the black screens when starting up there is a useful shortcut you can try. Press the windows key + P. This will give you some options to try different combinations of TV monitor and/or screen.

It sounds like you might need a graphics driver update or roll back to a previous one it is has recently changed.

I was using my Yoga 3 with an external monitor over the micro HDMI port almost for a year. Never experienced a problem. Yesterday when I pluged the monitor it didn't recognized it. And the laptop's own screen was suppose to be HD resolution but it became 3200x1800 and it's not allowing you to change it. Tried to update the related drivers but they are already the latest. I'll be glad if someone can advise what to do..

Hey Everyone! Trying to get an idea of what order to start throwing parts at this thing. Like the title says, my screen on the Yoga 2 Pro is blank. The computer boots and runs fine on an external monitor. I haven't pulled the bezel off the screen yet, but the video cable looks good on the mobo end. I am guessing I probably need to buy a new screen, but was wondering if I could have a cable issue before I spend $150 on a screen.  Couple of interesting things:In the device manager, only the external display is in the "Monitor" list. I don't have an option to mirror displays in the graphics properties or anything. My compupter just things there's one monitor, the external one.  I was having flickering issues leading up to the screen going out. Flickering only occured on battery.  Any thoughts?

Greetings, I have a X1 Carbon G6 with the following specs: i5-8350 / 16GB Ram / Lenovo OEM Win10 Pro (1803 - 17134.799) Within the past week it has developed an issue where the Carbon's monitor will work until Windows 10 starts to load and then go black.  Connecting it to an external monitor shows the laptop works fine.  Troubleshooting done: 1. Windows Update / Lenovo Vantage set to auto update all drivers and firmware.  Everything updated, no change.2. Delete Intel UHD 620 driver, reboot, Carbon monitor works but without multi-monitor support on the default Microsoft video driver.  If auto updates left on, the Intel UHD 620 driver v25.2 pulls down and the Carbon monitor goes black again.3. Tried installing an older version of the UHD 620 driver from intel (v22), no change.4. Tried having Windows do a "Refresh Windows" from the Windows Defender page under System settings.  After rebooting the Carbon monitor started to work again, but I had to begin manually reinstalling all programs.5. While Office 365 was installing the Carbon monitor stopped working again. I've seen other threads about Lenovos getting the black screen issue with a combination of Intel UHD 620 driver updates + Win 10 1803, but none of them appear to have found a root cause (and fix).  Has anyone solved this issue?  I have 3 years of an extended warranty from Lenovo but I don't know if that covers an issue like this as it doesn't seem like bad hardw... I have tried so many things to fix this but nothing works. I can't contact HP, because I have no money and my warranty is up. Every time I turn on my laptop I hear the noise and see the lights on but the screen is pitch black. I tried shining a flashlight to the screen to check if I see the picture at all and the screen is just black.

be sure the monitor settings for your graphics are not set to an external monitor. go to control panel, clicking Display Settings to check this out and toggle between screen 1 and 2. click the icon that corresponds to the monitor that you want to designate as the primary display, and then select the 'This is my main monitor' check box.

if not, the use of the external monitor which works ok confirms the issue.

its not the video chip or motherboard. could be the lcd screen itself or if it is the inverter. most of the times it is the inverter that is the problem and can be fixed, you just have to get the correct inverter that supplies the right amount of voltage and you will be back in business.

sometimes its the backlight (light bulb) that went, which is more difficult imo and more time consuming. shine a flashlight on the lcd , if you see a faint image then in most cases it is the backlight that needs to be replaced. If you don't see an image even when shining the flashlight then it is most likely the inverter. if that helps.

if deciding to look at repairs for the inverter, enter ... Read more

HP Compaq nc 8230, XP Pro SP3

Hadn't used the laptop for awhile, had black screen after I charged it then tried to start it.

Disconnected the battery & held start switch for about a minute, reinstalled the battery, then the hp logo showed on startup and after a couple tries Windows booted.

Was trying to find out how to run an external monitor. Went into the control panel / display / settings, found that I had 2 options under DISPLAY, but both were identically worded - basically for multiple monitors. One was #1, the other was #2. I hooked up the external monitor and it worked fine. I tried toggling between #1 to #2 with no problem or change in what was displayed.

I shut down the laptop, then unplugged the external monitor.

When I try to restart, I have a black screen, nothing at all shows incl the hp logo that usually shows right at the start. The HDD, etc, indicator lights still show that things are running normally.

The only thing I did was leave it on the #2 display setting, altho it read identical to #1, essentially "multiple monitors"

When I got the black screen on startup after disconnecting the external monitor, I also tried the fn+f4 button which is supposed to be the multiple monitor function, without any result or change in the black screen. When I had the external monitor hooked up and working I tried that to see if it had any effect but it did not.

Appreciate any help to get the display back to functioning.

So even now if you hook up the second monitor you still don't get any video on either display?

I have a new ProBook 645 G1 that I use most of the time with a Dell 34" monitor (3415w) connected via the DisplayPort with the lid closed on the ProBook. If I lift the lid on the ProBook, the display switches to the laptop fine, and if I close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. However, if I switch inputs on the monitor to view a different computer, then switch the monitor back to view the DisplayPort that the ProBook is connected to, the ProBook will not display, either on the external monitor or on its own screen (if I open the lid on the ProBook, the display on the ProBook is black as well). The only way I have found to recover the display on the ProBook is to force the laptop down by holding the power key until it powers off, then powering it back on and letting it boot up. I have tried cycling the lid and waiting to see if the ProBook will eventually output on the DisplayPort or the ProBook screen. It won?t. I have tried the Windows +P keys without effect, as well as unplugging the DisplayPort cable from the ProBook, but the display on the ProBook will not come back on. The ProBook boots up fine on the external monitor. I have found that if I open the lid on the ProBook *before* I switch the input on the monitor away from the ProBook, then switch the monitor back to the DisplayPort connected to the ProBook and close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. If I forget to open the lid on the ProBook before switching the external ... Read more
