blocked from setting Internet Options

Q: blocked from setting Internet Options

I'm trying to help a friend with a series of Malware related problems, He was hit by "Antispyware Soft "

It seems to regenerate, and sets him up to use a proxy server. Now, it has somehow blocked him from even going to look at Internet Options at all, he gets an error, "cancelled due to restrictions on this computer"

The only way I can help him is to login remotely, and now I can't even do that. He's a local admin on a standalone computer, any ideas on how to get to Internet Options?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you

Hello,

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

Help guys!

I think I got a virus - I can't change the firewall settings anymore, on avast - my real time shields status is unknown and it won't let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on it says "Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable."

ALso I can't access the internet. I get the computer icon with the exclamation mark and when I try to diagnose, it says "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings."

I scanned with spyware doctor, malwarebytes, adware, super antispyware already and now scanning with avast. The previous ones removed alot of viruses but I still think there are some remaining.

I can't even use restore point cause it always fails :/ Please help!

I just bought a new MSI laptop. However, Win 8.1 was not activated at the factory, so I keep getting the activation reminder. I've tried to get the keys using those apps and Microsoft support told me they are blocked and and MSI has to clear them so I can activate. A useless call to MSI said they have to get the laptop back and they will perform a new install of Windows. Questionable is if this service is free and the length of time they will take, as they are renowned to have fairly poor service.

It appears I have the OE version (nothing in the PC Settings says "pro")

There are dealers on Ebay (with many good reviews) selling unused pro discs with the license keys/stickers, for good prices.

I would like to avoid a new installation, but the dealer said that if my Win 8.1 is an OE, the keys can't be used with my laptop and I must do a fresh install with the Pro disc they provide in order to use the license key on the sticker.

Is there any other way to avoid a new install and possibly upgrade to Pro? I'm thinking for the price of the disc and key, it's good insurance to buy it to keep it on hand for periodic reinstalls, but I'm strapped for time right now and need to continue working with the laptop. I can only do a new install at a much later time.

I checked the search and I didn't see something that aligned with my particular situation. Thanks in advance.

A:New Laptop, WIN8 OE Not Activated, Key Blocked, Options?

Hi there!

I've been a custom PC builder for years, and I've always loved ASUS and MSI boards, although I've not had experience with MSI-based laptops, so I haven't had to tussle with MSI's customer support.

On the other hand, Microsoft's Product Keys are - shall we say - difficult, at best?
For some reason, Microsoft wants us to pay some company to reinstall Windows for us, or use the manufacturer's "Recovery Media", and it's often loaded with garbage that we don't want, or it doesn't do what we want or need in the first place.

*Ahem*

Now, if I may offer a helpful hand, I have located a script some years ago that translates the string values from the Windows Registry and makes them into a product key that you can actually read.

If you have the media available, then ProductKey.VBS should find your Product Key for you, from which you can perform a re-install and should be able to activate Windows from there.

If you DON'T have the media available, then the following tutorial can help you create the re-installation media.

at the color settings 32/16 I saw that I had more display settings: advanced settings->adapter>list all modes and none of the listed modes had 1280x800 you posted for the 17-18 inch monitors, every option still had a squashed look and it looked even poorly when I choose a lower resolution.

what should I do?

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

Thanks!

Martin

A:Setting Autoplay options

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

A few weeks ago after a registry clean and a few other fixes, I lost the autofill functionality on IE 7.

It is checked off in Tools--Internet Options--Content--AutoComplete--Settings (all options checked except password - same as always!).

All, for example, search fields (google, dictionary.com, etc.) are not double-clickable. Do not produce any prior words entered in the field. Etc.

Any sense how this happened? Have searched Microsoft forums but found nothing on this and wonder if it's a new bug...

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

A:Options for setting up a wireless printer

Instructions for creating an ad hoc network in Windows 7 can be found here:
Windows 7: How to Create an Ad Hoc Network | kombitz.com

I also wonder if maybe it has anything to do with encryption?
It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! " ? $ % ... but produce the same symbols as the first example (laptop's own keyboard).

I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

All previous versions gave us a list of steps to set folder options......we'd go through the steps.....youre options might be fine ...........now, but the next time you use windows explorer, your options are......not there.
Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?
each time we use that folder?

I haven't yet tried and I'm not touchin' folder options untill i see what you folks have to say.

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

Hello community,
I've been googling for this quite a long time but I didn't find an answer. I got a Dell Studio 1747 and when I open the Windows Mobility Centre and start the Radio Control Options it says that it got blocked in the BIOS. The List for activating or deactivating the adapters such as Bluetooth or Wifi is just greyd out. I remember that this worked for me, but since a while it doesn't work anymore. I don't know how to unblock this in BIOS.
The only thing which I accidently changed in BIOS was activating Computrace, and now it just says activated and I can't deactivate it anymore. But the Computrace software itself isn't running on my notebook, theres no such process, because I have been googling for that, too and know what the name of the process is. Maybe this has something to do with it?

I suggest going into the BIOS. Start the system while tapping F2, choose the Wireless tab and change the wireless switch option to "all", then check to see if you have more options in Windows Mobility Center.  Play around with the different wireless settings in the BIOS to see if it makes any difference.
If you are having problems with Computrace, I suggest contacting Absolute Software.

Here's my problem with Vista.

When I go into any folder for the first time, it comes up with a set of random things to sort the folders by, and random view settings.

I want every folder to have the "details" view by default. Also, I want the tabs "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" that I can click on to sort these, with "Type" being the default selected one.

This is how I had things in WinXP. All I had to do was click "Apply to folders" in the folder options. I do this in Vista, also, I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. Yet it makes up a random set of view settings for any folder I haven't manually set myself.

So, how do I make Windows Vista stop coming up with random view settings for folders? When I click on a folder of pictures I still want it in "Details" view, with "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" tabs. With "Type" selected as the default to sort by.

Yet, it appears in "Large Icons" view, with "Date Taken", "Tags", "Size", and "Rating" as the only sort by options.

How do I stop this madness?

Hi,

I'm new here, having been recommended by someone who has succesfully removed viruses in the past, with your help.

My 12 year old son was surprised by the invitation to run Vista Internet Security 2011, and said Yes (groan). Since then, I have tried to run my Avast, both in and out of safe mode, but it has not detected any files, despite the fact that the VIS 2011 security window keeps coming up on my screen. I have tried to download the Microsoft security tools, but my access to the internet has been denied, even in safe mode. I've also tried to identify the virus files in Task Manager, but they are either hidden, or well disguised.

I am now completely unable to access IE, as every time I try, it tells me that the programme is absent. I accessed my email three days ago (after the computer had been infected), but I have not tried since, as I am afraid I will cause problems there if I keep trying.

I've read the guidelines for what to do before submission, but I can't action most of them because they require downloading, which I'm not able to do!

I have an Acer computer, with up to date Avast antivirus (free version). I also have a Mac book which is about three years old, and I can access the internet, and my web based email, through that.

I'm hoping you can help me turn the IE back on on my PC, and get rid of the VIS 2011.

I've been unable to use my laptop computer fully for almost two months now. I have a feeling when I downloaded an extension for Chrome, a bad malware was attached to it. When trying to go to a site in Chrome, the message "this page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred." In the lower left hand corner if my homepage does load and I type in a different address, the text "waiting for proxy tunnel" is visible. Another message I would see after attempting to go to a website is "ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED."   On the rare occasion that I do get to a new webpage, the https is crossed out. When checking to see if it was just Chrome acting up, Firefox would show an error message 'the proxy server is refusing connections" or it wouldn't change from the homepage at all. I've done Google searches on the fixing the proxy problem and when I checked the LAN settings in the Internet Options, I'm unable to uncheck the "use a proxy server for your LAN" option (greyed out). When I click on the IE icon on the desktop the only screen it brings up is the Internet Options Screen. Just like you clicked on TOOLS and then OPTIONS. Can anyone tell me why this happened?

A:Internet Explorer Desktop Icon Only displays Internet Options

Does the same thing happen when running it from C:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe?

If it does not happen with that maybe make a new shortcut to the desktop?

Hi there,

I have a problem with Internet Explorer 6.

Under "Tools", "Internet Options", the Advanced Tab is missing.

Previously, I could access it and see it. Now its totally gone.

I've tried reinstalling Win XP and IE 6 but the problem remains.

My PC is a P4, 2.4GHz, 526MB ram, with Win XP Professional. IE version is 6.0.2800

I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out with this.

I can be reached at [email protected]

Thanks!

I've been having this problem for about a year now, and I just can't get it fixed. Whenever I try to open Internet Explorer it just flashes for less than a second, and then automatically closes. Also, I can't open Internet Options. I try to click on it from the Control Panel, but nothing happens. I try to enter inetcpl.cpl in Run, but nothing happens.

However, i've read on some other forums and threads here about looking for "inetcpl.cpl" in the System32 folder, and it is NOT there on my computer. I really don't know what to do now.
EDIT: After using Microsoft's Fix It program, inetcpl.cpl is back in the System32 folder, but nothing happens when I click on it. I tried to access it through the browsing fuction of Run, but it doesn't sure up there. Maybe that's normal, but I thought I should note it anyway.

NOTE: If this belows in a different section, please move it. I wasn't really sure.

I have a problem that started the other day. When I click on any of my Internet Explorer icons or shortcuts, the screen flashes but nothing pops up. The only way I can access the internet is through My Computer and even then I cannot click on some links, even through my email. I have tried accessing internet options, but it says the operation has been cancelled due to restrictions set by computer administrator. There is only one user account on here, and I am the computer administrator. I have virus, spyware, and adware on here, I have removed all threats, still no luck. I have even looked through the registry looking for restrictions but didn't see any. I am running XP. HELP Thanks

I have upgraded a Dell Latitude with a much larger HDD. I re installed Win XP and went directly to Windows to update all patches etc... Once all downloads were installed I clicked on internet icon and was brought directly to the Internet Options dialog box. I tried changing the web address here and still had the same problem. I might add that I also installed Office 2003 with no problems but during my windows updating I did see some updates for Office as well.
Could Office have made some changes? I've only downloaded Office once or twice and have never seen this before.
Another thought, while downloading, sp3 and IE8 were installed.
Thanks, Tom

Internet Explorer Control Panel Restrictions (Part 2) at Registry Guide for Windows:
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/797/

Deleting the AdvancedTab registry value should do it.

Also, do a thorough scan for Malware in your system, as this restriction may have been caused by them.

Every now and then while browsing, my work is interrupted in my browser with the message that I can't connect to a proxy. Checking my internet options in the LAN settings shows that it keeps turning on the proxy option with a proxy IP of 127.0.0.1. After some research I learned this was a virus meant to steal my information by rerouting my browsing through a proxy. I have tried several services to remove it, be it ESET, MalwareBytes, JunkRemover, AdwCleaner, and even deleting certain registry entries which just come back. None helped as they don't detect any viruses or malware. Turning the proxy option off fixes the problem for about an hour before it comes back and turns the option on again. I use a 64x Windows 10 system, so ComboFix doesn't work. The log is as follows:

A:Internet Options keeps turning on Proxy for all Internet connections

I've noticed this in the whitelisted section: ProxyServer: [S-1-5-21-1993721000-4116074352-2927827119-1001] => http=127.0.0.1:8895;https=127.0.0.1:8895.

Considering that it is the ip address for the proxy hijack virus, I'm assuming that it's important.

Ahoi,

Peoblem started a day ago, My Interent explorer when I open it opens for a second then closes without any error. I don't use Interent Explorer but I need Interent options for my proxy settings, so I went to Control panel and found that Interent options do not open as well, and one minor thing every folder I opened, opened in a new window. I fixed that, been trying to fix this but was unable too. Thought get help from you guys.

Thanx in advance.

A:Internet Explorer cannot open, Internet options gone.

This may or may not work. From your Start Menu enter Internet Options in the search bar. When the results are displayed click Internet Options. If it opens reset IE.Advanced tab.Reset Internet Explorer settings is at the bottom of Advanced.Click Reset. You will asked to confirm that you want to reset. At this point, you can either delete personalsettings or keep them. This has nothing to do with website favorites in IE.Click the reset button. After reset, your home page will be set to msn.comYou can easily change it to the page you prefer.

I would try resetting IE, How to reset Internet Explorer settings - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 .

I also suggest that you install SP3 and all subsequent critical updates, once you get your browser functioning.

I am running vista home premium. for the past year and a half, i was using the vista backup to backup my files to a second internal hard drive installed for that purposes. i was running out of space on that drive, so i researched the best way to make some space and was advised that if you delete backup files, delete the whole set, not just interim files. So, I deleted the backup set (i.e., the folder with all the backup files). Now i want to do a new, complete backup, but every time i try to click on back up my files, it fails. Can anyone suggest a way to get this working again?

I too am an have been having awful problems with two of my Dell laptops running XP. I just spent $300 on service work done by a professional and got a whole new motherboard, keyboard and Dell had just put in a new screen. So $600 spent on this one particular computer in just a few months and still got the dreaded blue screen. Finally had to restore my XP OS using my Del XP disc. TWICE and reinstall my Norton 360 and run it. Now I STILL CAN NOT get any of the URL's to open up from a Google page! What's up? Have I accidentally changed a setting somewhere without remembering it? It is in BOTH IE and Firefox. I am so frustrated and my eyes are killing me working on these two computers with the same issues 24/7. They are on a Wireless Network, but my husbands Dell PC a 2003 has no problems what so ever. I can't figure it out! I can see why this guy Alex up there is feeling sabotage. It's all VERY VERY strange. Can anyone help me ?
My husband thought it was viruses, but nope Norton 360 came up clean as did my XP diagnostics check.
