Y540 questions for prospective buyer please?

Q: Y540 questions for prospective buyer please?

Hi,I'm looking at preferably the RTX2060 version of the Y540 laptop and was hoping I could get some questions answered please? I've posted on another couple of threads but thought it maybe best to have all my questions in one place. So the main thing for me is fan noise when doing light tasks such as surfing the web and MS Office. How do the fans perform i.e. do they go up and down, getting faster then slower etc or are they quiet all the time? Just sent an Omen 15 back because the fans were too loud just surfing the web.Does the RTX2060 version definately have hybrid (optimus) mode?Just one M.2 slot right? And I take it there are no issues with installing a 2.5 inch SSD?Anyone have experience with shipping in the UK? Says 3-4 weeks delivery but who knows, I've heard the distributer from Ireland is pretty awful. Many thanks, really appreciate any help, especially on fan noise during light tasks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Haii, I'm just curious about some technical details, to help me choose between the P52 and P1. 1. Does the ThinkPad P52 have any high-power USB Type-A ports that can power a 2.5" HDD? (900mA at 5V) 2. Can the touchpad do 3-finger drag (e.g. to move files around)? The manual doesn't say anything about customizing gestures, and the default is to show task view/desktop. 3. Can it use the discrete GPU (Quadro P2000) for the built-in display? Or is the dGPU only for external displays over HDMI/Thunderbolt? 4. Why is the memory frequency limited to 24000MHz due to an "Intel limitation" (as noted in the P52 specs sheet) while the ThinkPad P1 indicates no such limitation? (configured with the same motherboard and CPU ? i7-8850H) 5. What's the refresh rate of the display?

Hi. I'm totally blind, so since blind people use computers mostly via the keyboard, keyboard layout is pretty critical. I'm trying to learn some things about the Think Pad t480s. It sounds like it doesn't have a context menu key. That's usually located between right alt and right control. I use that a lot to get to the same menu most of us get by right clicking on things, such in file explorer. Shift+f10 does the same thing, but it doesn't always work. I could however remap the, what apparently is print screen according to what I was told in a chat with Lenovo earlier today and is where the context key normally is. I don't need print screen so this would probably work well. The insert key however. I've heard a horror story or two about the insert key and page up and page down and home and end being messed updepending on whether you use the function key lock fn+escape. That does work on the t480s, right, function lock I mean fn+escape? And, since I always want to use the function keys as they're supposed to be used, as function keys, alt+f4, f5 etc should be as easy as possible... What, if anything, else does that affect. Where's insert, and does it just work as an insert key? Insert is really important for screen reader users. What is the key to the left of the delete key in the upper right corner. That is delete in the top right isn't it? If the key to the left is insert, and it functions as delete, that's perfect! If it's not insert, I could remap it prov... Read more

Yesterday I downloaded a file called Dvdexpress Player and subsequently deleted it using my Control Panel. However, since the deletion, I am experiencing 3 problems.

1) My System Restore won't work!
2) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware doesn't open!
3) My computer seems to be slowing down.

I'm also wary that the Dvdexpress Player might have contained malware but am very uncertain whether those symptoms I listed are the direct function of that program. I don't know what to do.... below is the log and the attachment as I followed the directions from first steps.

It might be a strange question to post, but I am struggling whether to return the P50 due to the only complaint I have: weight/portability and maybe hope to find something as powerful but lighter later on this year (even if Apple does something drastic on the Macbook Pro front). so I guess my question is, for P50 owners, what would you think would become the P50 weakness/bottleneck over say using it for 1-2 years? what was your second best option when considering whether to get the P50? As a background, I think I got a good deal from the Lenovo Outlet and got the P50, Xeon, M2000M, 512 M.2. PCIe, 32GB non-ECC RAM, 4K display, all for about US$1.6. I have used recently the HP Studio Mobile and the XPS 15, which are say 1-1.5 punds lighters, but obviously offer less ventilation (more throttling) and less expansion, max 2 disk bays, instead of the 3 bays in the P50. As I see it, maybe the main bottleneck will become be M2000M down the road as graphic-intensive software becomes even more intensive, which then makes me wonder if rather go with something light as the Razer Blade (with the GeForce 970M).  For me I plan to use it for casual/home photo/video editing, but mostly productivity and moderate "scientific computing" (MatLab, Fortran, for which I am excited to learn more about CUDA-acceleration).

Hi,

I just recently purchased an ativa router for my two computers. After installing it and having the internet connect on both computers it worked great for an hour or so. I started to have problems running programs like games and voice communication software. The ping would go from 65 to 25,543. I ended up shutting down windows firewall and norton antivirus firewall, still had the problems. My in game latency hung around 800-1200 most of the time.
Has anyone else had these kinds of problems with this particular brand?

I ended up returning it and purchasing a Linksys router for 11 dollars more and it just is amazing. It also provides online support and a password protection for your network. Which Ativa did not.

Let my tale be a warning to you all.I ordered a CTO Thinkpad Yoga 370 build in early July, and after 3 order delays and a latest status from order management that stated a vague ?weeks and weeks of delay, probably will ship at the end of August? repsonse from customer service, I gave up. It?s either been received, planned to ship or shipped, when we all know there?s 10?s of incremental status steps in between. We?re in the dark folks.- The order tracking information they have doesn?t match Hong Kong, and is days behind, only the factory can change it.- My order changed ship dates 3x before I lost my patience, then Lenovo started outright guessing at when the order would ship and just making stuff up about why the order might be delayed. All very pleasant, all very apologetic.- They still refuse to release the hold on my credit card so I can just go buy something else.- North Carolina customer service can?t cancel an order when it delays too long for a customer to wait, they can only request it.- The lead times on the website for CTO builds are pure guesses and have nothing to do with reality. Hi, I'm selling my 5 year old HP Pavilion G62-456TU notebook and a potential buyer has asked me how long the batttery lasts for. (Particularly when fully charged, not just how long the replacement bettery itself will continue to run for.) As I have stopped using my old notebook and I ran a clean install of the Windows 10 upgraded operating system (a few weeks ago), its not as simple as turning it on to log in to the desktop to show the battery charge level. If I start it up, the notebook will prompt me to create a new user account. I know the full battery charge (replacement battery for this model of notebook that I've had for 21 months) like the original 6 cell original (that lasted 3 years), was 90 minues to 2 hours. I'm wondering if anyone out there would know of an approximate figure, so I can inform the potential buyer. Thanks.

Let me just start by saying Lenovo rocks hard! Let me also say Dell sucks! I decided to upgrade my two laptops I use for my work, they were around 3 years old. I am an independent computer consultant. I mainly architect and develop software for businesses. I focus on the Microsoft stack and Azure. I had an Asus touchscreen laptop for travel and a beefier Sager with a desktop chip and NVidia graphics card for home. I mainly work from home recently but I have to travel to customer sites periodically. I did some research and with Intel Skylake I found out laptops can now have 64GB of memory which I need because I run multiple Hyper-V VMs on my home laptop. I first searched for my home laptop and the Lenovo ThinkPad P series came up due to the 64GB I was looking for. When I looked at the P70 I got excited because it had virtually everything I was looking for in my new home laptop, 17? screen, higher graphics resolution (4K), PCIe-NVMe SSDs, 64GB DDR4, Nvidia Discrete GPUs, and high end Intel Skylake CPUs. What excited me more was they had an Intel mobile Xeon and ECC memory to go with it (Not sure the ECC memory is functioning as ECC now). The NVidia Quadro concerned me because I was used to the Nvidia GTX series and really wasn?t familiar with the Quadro series. Anyway I decided right then I wanted the Xeon Mobile chip, 64GB and all the other components recently mentioned so I priced it out and it came in around 5K which is what I usually spend but this w... Unbelievable I know, I can hardly believe that I am typing this.My daughters HP G62 laptop which I bought her 9 months ago for doing so well in her exams at school developed a fault which resulted in a white screen and no boot up.I took it down to a friend of mine who repairs laptops for him to diagnose the problem. His initial diagnosis was that it was the graphics chip becoming detached from the motherboard because they are using lead free solder to fit them which is a known problem that requires a replacement motherboard, he showed me several HP laptops in his shop with the same fault. He confirmed this by plugging in an external monitor which gave no signal. He checked the LCD for damage and gave it the all clear. He did not dismantle the laptop as I explained it was under warranty.I contacted HP to let them know of the problem and the engineers diagnosis was that it was a graphic chip / board fault and arranged for it to be collected for repair, which I was happy with. Two days later I get a call saying that the problem is a cracked LCD screen and it will cost me 199 to get it repaired.........I was completely gobsmacked at this statement and asked them to return it without repair. It arrived back two days later and I couldn't believe my eyes that the laptop screen was indeed now broken!!!!!!! To summarize, HP confirmed the fault was most likely a graphic chip / board fault, I had the screen checked by a professional prior to return to HP for repair, they then tried ... I'm going to get with the program & get a smart phone like the rest of the world. I'm having trouble understanding how much data I would need. What can I do with 500 MB/month? I would mostly do email & look stuff up on the web. Some people say that's plenty, others say I'd blow thru that amount in a matter of days.
I'm in Canada & there's no Verizon, AT&T, Sprint etc. The providers I did check all have basically the same price plans, which range from $50 for the 500 MB up to $80 for 2 GB. I don't want to overpay but at the same time, I don't want any surprise charges.
I've been looking at the HTC Desire Z & the iPhone 4 if that has anything to do with it. I really have no clue when it comes to this stuff so be nice.

First post here so be nice.   I have the Y540 15IRH I believe, it has the i5 9300H, 1660Ti and 8GB RAM with the 144Hz panel. I'm trying to enable the iGPU because battery life using the 1660Ti all the time is abysmal, I know that the i5 9300H has an integrated UHD 630 but I cannot for the life of me find out how to turn it on.  Device Manager only shows the 1660Ti under Display Adapters, I have installed the Intel Video Driver from Lenovo's site but it still does not appear there. Trying to install the newest video drivers from Intel's site throws up an error message telling me my computer does not meet the minimum requirements. I've updated the BIOS to the newest version on the Lenovo site, I've had a look in there and there are no options relating to the GPU. Can anybody help me? Hello, Just recently purchased the Legion Y540, and I'm trying to figure out how to control the fan speed. I've been through 3 chat sessions with Lenovo, no luck there. So far it seems the only way to control the fans is with Extreme Cooling through Lenovo Nerve Center. I've downloaded the most recent version of this program, and that function is not there. Only 2 of the 4 functions are there (Prevent Mistaken Input and Network Priority). Looking through the forums, this seems to be a common problem with Nerve Center on other Lenovo computers. Lenovo can you please fix this program? I have updated my BIOS to BHCN28WW (Also tried BHCN27WW, as provided by the Lenovo Support Specialist in chat), the most recent one, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nerve Center, no luck anywhere. Lenovo Vantage seems to have very limited control option ("Performance Mode" = "Higher CPU usage, higher fan speed"? What if my GPU usage/temp is high but my CPU isn't, so the fans won't kick in?). Just looking to keep my gaming laptop cool while gaming. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, Still trying to decide on the display type when buying this Legion Y540 laptop. I have not got enough awnsers. Now i know they will have the same color gamut, and brightness, but what about response times? Cant find anything about that. And what about the bits? Are they 6 bit ( +dithering maybe ) or 8 bit? 1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. Looking to get a new SSD but in NVMe configuration. a. Does my L450 support NVMe boot up? What type of NVMe does my Thinkpad support?  I thinking of getting the Samsung 860 Evo.b. Is connecting the new NVMe and running transfer SSD software the Windows 10 will recognize the drives and do the transfer?    Serial NumberF0ATPKGPart Number: 20D5503800 Thanks for any help you can give in this matter!
