I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hopefully someone can help me with this that might be a problem.

A long time ago, whenever I was making a DVD or just writing to a DVD, I could do things while it was going on because it would barely use any resources. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago (I think), the computer no longer does that, and whenever I write to a DVD or just normal data to a disc (no matter what program I use), the computer will become almost unusable.

This is what the Task Manager will look like when making the disc.

It had never done that before prior to my knowledge. I think I have all the right drivers and such installed, but I am not exactly sure. I did format+Reinstall everything, but I don't recall if it did it before that or not.

Is there an actual problem, or is this actually normal? Thanks to anyone who replies.

Here are my system specs~
HP Pavilion DV6609wm
Windows XP Professional (v.2002) Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2
Dual-Core Processor TK-55
1 gig of Ram, 1.80GHz
Physical Address Extension

A:Writing to a Disc~

I'm not an expert on this but to me that Task Manager screen shot looks good--I can't see anything in the memory or CPU usage that would indicate you experiencing particular slowness.

The only thing I can think of is that if you don't have all the correct drivers, especially the chipset ones, maybe the dual processors are not working properly. Check HP's web site to make sure you have the latest drivers. Note that there may be one set for XP 32-bit and another for XP 64-bit.

I wrote picture files to a CD-RW disc, there is still room, etc. Now I have opened a file, made changes to it but it says it is a read only file. I have tried saving it as a different name but that does not work either it says I cannot write it to the disc. What the heck has gone wrong? Or more importantly, what did I screw up?

Thanks
Jeanne

A:Did I forget on writing to a CD-RW disc?

You screwed nothing up. All files on any normally burned CD are read only whether it's a CDR or CDRW. CD's are not the same as hard drives. Once something is on the CD that's it, you cannot change it. The difference with a CDRW being you can wipe the lot and use the disc again. To make 'changes' to a file on CD you'll need to copy it to your PC, work on it there and burn the new file back to the CD.
Furthermore you can only add files to a CDRW that already has data on it, if that CDRW was created as a multi-session CDRW in the first place. If it wasn't and the disc was 'finalised' after that first burn then you can't add anything else to it without wiping the lot and starting again.

I started a thread a few weeks concerning my registry, and received some great help. The problem was/is that I actually had/have a couple of related issues. It was kind of a chain reaction of issues that led me to post.

As I stated in that post, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. For that reason, I decided I want to go back to square one and reinstall my OS. Right or wrong, it's a "peace-of-mind" thing for me. Before I reinstalled the OS I wanted to back up all my files. When I attempted to write my files to a disc, I started having issues. (One of the reasons I want to do a clean reinstall is so I can know with relative certainty if issues like this are hardware or software related).

When I started having trouble writing files to a CD, I went to www.pcpitstop.com and did their free scan to see if I could figure out where problems might be. That scan showed that I had a lot of issues with my registry . . . which prompted my original post on this forum.

That being said, I received a lot of valuable advice on the harm of using a registry cleaner. Admittedly, I have used the Ccleaner registry scan in the past, but thanks to the info I received here I don't plan to use any registry cleaners in the future.

flavallee suggested that the onboard CD writing program wasn't the best and I should try Ashampoo Burn Studio. I didn't have an opportunity to try it until last night. It acts like everything is okay, and gives me the "F... Read more

Does anybody know if it is a hardware or software problem and if it is fixable.

What program are you using to write to the DVD? DVD writing is a real PITA in Vista unless you use a compatible program (and even then, it's still a PITA!)!

Hi all

I've been having problems recently with my computer freezing after booting up and after resetting it a couple of times it seemed to work ok. This doesn't happen so often over the last 2-3 weeks but it's shut itself down a couple of times. I've just been browsing the web or writing up documents or something that didn't require opening/using software other than a browser or MS Word so I've really no clue why it did it. Then I went to write a disc using Nero last night (having not used Nero for several months) and after a couple of seconds the PC shut down. I've just tried to write the disc again twice, and each time it shut off after a few seconds. I've performed a scan with AVG and it doesn't find any problems. I honestly don't know what the problem is let alone how to fix it.

Can anyone help? I'm afraid I don't even know what information to provide, so if you think you can suggest a way to fix it, then please ask me whatever you'll need to know.

thanks very much

I'm asking this question becuase:

I'm a cheap skate
Just so I can say, "I can do this" one day[/list=1]

Okay, the question is - How do I write faster than 4x on a 4x CD-rw disc? I realize the media is only rated for 4x, but in all likelyhood, it is capable of being rewritten faster than this.

The problem is, Nero "auto detects" the CD-speed and limits my burning to 4x while my burner is capable of 10x.

Are there any programs or tweaks that can bypass this safety feature?

A:Writing faster than 4x on a 4x CD-rw disc?

Well, as I've mentioned to you before Rick, the fastest CDRW discs that I can find locally are 4x, but when I set Nero to MAX speed, it writes to them at 8x. My drive is 24/10/40, as you probably already know. I've also had 16x CDR discs that burn at 20x, but not very often. I just figured that the speed indicator was lying to me, but it seems they are burning faster than they are rated.

I have a question on what happens after writing and then erasing large files onto a HDD?
Let me explain:
I put 3 banks of sounds and instruments on a new HDD, (300GB) one after other.
3 Folders, with sub-folders, size 100GB, than 40GB, last one 80GB.

I had to erase 1st one 100GB. Does it mean that there is an "empty space" in the beginning of the HDD?
What if I start to add stuff on the HDD? where is it going to be written?
Is there a way to move the 2 remaining folders to the beginning of the disc or what happens if I put a folder of 120GB? Is the folder going to be split up?
Does it effect performance of HDD?
TIA

A:Hard Disc writing and erasing

Windows decides itself where to put files. But it makes the file contiguous if possible. If a file is modified (so you append some stuff to end of that file), that portition can not really be appended to the end (another file is already there) and windows places it somewhere is.

Since you're only copying/deleting stuff the files will stay contiguous. But folder itself isn't contiguous in your case (folder 120GB will be split up).

It doesn't effect performance a lot. (Probably you don't even see any difference). To make everything contiguous.... defragment your drive with win7 disk defragment

After InCD for a number of years, I can say it's average at best.

If there is one area where reliability is an absolute must, it's with backup software/hardware solutions that includes CD/DVD writing software. To say that the Microsoft pre-packed solution is a waste of disc space would be optimistic, I've never had it work and it only errors. Calling Microsoft they suggest I purchase a third party solution to get it to work.
InCD can prove quirky and require tech support to diagnose issues and support is a lost cause. IN fact, they request the user forward issues to Microsoft who will ' forward the issue to Ahead Software'. Right.

Also, they've designed InCd so it will not install on a system already having packet writing software. Who designed this? At times a CD RW disk written to will come back as 'read only' format after being written to a second time.

What about Dragon Disk? I see the company info at http://www.ntius.com/utilities.asp claiming it is playable on any pc with XP/Vista but it is so and is it really UDF compatible to play back all of my InCD's?

Experience tells me to verify claims these companies are making if at all possible before buying.

A:Dragon Disc, InCD packet writing

Or, like the vast majority of us, you can just use single session, burn once CDs. With USB thumb drives and CDs that cost about 10 cents in volume, any packet-writing software is not worth even the potential headache it might cause.

A:Solved: DVD writer not writing disc properly

Try it again with DMA on. This is very important and you may need to update the drivers for the motheroard/IDE controller to get the best performance. Do you know what motherboard you have or what it said the IDE Controller was in the Device Manager? Intel, VIA, ALI. SIS, etc.

You also need to make sure DMA is enabled in the BIOS setup. This is before Windows loads and you generally press F2 or DEL to get into the setup. Then look for DMA settings, maybe under Advanced or Chipset settings and make sure its enabled or set to AUTO.

And on the back of the drive you should make sure the jumper is set correctly. If you have the DVD drive on the same cable as any other drive then make sure that one of the drives is set with the jumper on the back of the drive to Master and the other drive is set to Slave.

You may also want to download the latest patches to Nero from here: http://www.nero.com/us/nero6_3.html

If you want to drag and drop files on a CD or DVD then you also need to install INCD thats comes with Nero and use it to format the disc. This is a seperate application from the main Nero program.

You can download the latest INCD from here: http://www.nero.com/us/update.php?pak=5

You may also need to update the firmware on the drive. Not all media works with all drives unfortanetely but soemtimes a firmware update can resolve this.

Hi

I have got a Benq Cd writer(20*10*40). My problem is I am unable to write data Cd's (data from harddisk) of more than 650MB capacity even though the Cd's I use are of 700MB. If I do write the Cd gets damaged. For CD to CD writing I am able to write.

I use Nero 5.5.3 original version ( I have even checked its settings but there was no use) & windows Xp writing software. This problem also had started recently and also only for data CD's and not for audio CD's.

I have got a Pentim 4 system with Windows Xp. 40 GB hard disk and 256MB RAM.

Hi

I run a Pentium 4 with XP Professional. It came with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.2 installed but I've never got around to using Roxio. I can play music CDs OK via Windows Media Player.

Realised I should be backing up my HD and tried to backup onto a CD-R with no joy so tried a CD-RW - no joy. Went and bought new CD-RWs in case the disks were at fault but still no joy.

Eventually found out that the Roxio version that I have can't be used on XP Professional so downloaded Nero 7 Demo. Still getting same messages.

When I try to copy I get a couple of different messages:
"Buffer underrun protection activated" and shows Type of disk in recorder: Empty
"Waiting for disc - Please insert disk to write to"

And previously got "Unrecognised data" and "insufficient space left" but it's a blank disk.

I've tried using Nero to do a quick erase but the Erase option isn't highlighted so can't.

I'm obviously missing something really basic ... anyone any ideas? I've attached aerror log in case this is of help.

Also, do I have to format all new disks before using and, if so, anyone know how to format using Nero 7 demo?

Many thanks.

A:Problem Writing To Cd-r Or Cd-rw

Hi Denise. Roxio and Nero don't like to cohabitate (I found out the hard way). Uninstall both of them for the time being.Download and run XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and unzip the contents. Run the EXE file. Reinstall Nero. If this doesn't work you could try using an inexpensive optical drive cleaning disk available at large retailers and computer shops.---------------------------There are 2 ways to store data on a RW disk. The first way is to burn to it like it is a CD-R and then erase the whole disc to reuse it. The other way is to use Nero's InCD driver to format the CD-RW. This will allow you to treat the disc as a 500MB removeable disc in which you can add and remove files and folders in Explorer as if it was a gigantic floppy. Only computers running InCD will be able to write to the disc.

Hi,

I have a Blue-Ray Drive on my HP-G70 120. I am running on WIndows 7. Recently, my blue-ray drive has been disturbing a lot. I wrote to CDs and DVDs before, and it worked fine. Also, I can read from the discs, so I dont think there is a problem with the laser, rather I suspect some problem with the software.

My Problems are:
Clicking on the drive icon says its a blank disc, though the disc is not.
While at other times, ejecting the drive from windows or from the button says "An error occurred while ejecting BD-ROM". At other times it ejects fine.
I burned some files onto a CD that already had 80MB written on it, using BurnAware. Now, after burning, only the previous (80MB) are present there, but no sign of the newest write. Also, it shows "0 bytes free of 80MB" when clicking properties on the drive icon in Windows Explorer.

So How do I fix these problems?

Thank You

I'm looking for help with a problem getting my DVD writer to recognise blank DVDs.

I can read and write CDs no problem and the drive will read already written DVDs(films, software etc). However when I insert a blank DVD the drive just keeps trying to access(green light on drive keeps flashing and drive is spinning) the DVD.

I am using DVD+R discs and have never had a problem in the past.

The drive is an Emprex 16X dual layer reader/writer. I have run the driver update and apparently the drivers are the most recent.

It may something simple or the drive might be just broken, but any help, advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi - have you AHCI enabled in the bios? If so it could be the driver Microsoft installs automatically during install - to fix this go to the below site and download and install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if you haven't already installed it.
I think its updated with the chipset drivers now, so you could update them firstly, and see if that fixes the problem if not install the rapid storage driver - available on the same support page below.

It is XP SP3 that is causing your problem. I have a Sony DRU 710A that stopped working after I installed XP SP3. It would not recognize any blank DVD media with Roxio or Nero. I pulled the drive out and put it in another machine that only had XP SP1 installed. The drive worked great. I then installed SP3 and the drive quit working again. I then uninstalled SP3 and the drive started working again. Microsoft needs to fix this problem. I hope someone can put enough pressure on them to fix this issue.

That is a direct link for drivers for your FN keys. Try it and let me know how it works.

i have been having a lot of issues with cd and dvd backups. i have been using nero as my main burning program and Ulead sometimes too(both these programs were in a pack when i bought my dvd/cd writer). lately when i try to use nero to do anything[copy dvd, data dvd/cd, mp3 cd, audio cd, etc], i open the nero start smart utility and select the task i want...then it loads for a few seconds and i get a message that the program has un expectedly quit, windows is sorry, etc.

so i figure ill use another program....he is a few i have trialed....and the results:
- Windows media Player: Opens fine, plays music and videos fine, but when i try to write a cd, it freezes and is "Not Responding"
-Ulead: opens Movie Factory Media Center, but when i select a task the program is "Not Responding" and i cannot shut it, even in task manager.
-Power2Go: Similar to ulead...open task console, but when i select a task the program is "Not Responding" and cant be shut in task manager either.
-CloneCD: Same as above....however, when i select copy disk. the program runs fine only if there is no cd/dvd in the drive. If i put the disk in the drive, then try to run the program, it stops responing. but if i wait until the programs asks for the disk, then put it in the writer, it works ok. i have tried this approach on the other programs too, but it doesnt help.

Nero and Ulead both used to work fine, without any problems. i have not installed any new hardware latel... Read more

Hello everyone. Just registered in this forum today and expecting to have a reply to my problem. I have Toshiba Qosmio E15-AV101, whose detailed specifications are mentioned here. For one year, I am being successfully writing to DVD+R disc without any sort of problem using Nero. However, I had a HDD crash recently and had to redo everything. Now the strange problem I have facing is that I can write to DVD-R, but cannot write to DVD+R or CD-R.

Using Nero as my burner, this is the error report I get while trying to burn my files to DVD+R :

XP CD writing wizard writes files to CD. I get the message 'Your files have been successfully written to the CD'. The tray opens upon completion. When I close everything out an try to read CD contents from Windows Explorer it shows empty! I have tried the trouble shooter, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the CD driver all to no avail. When I burn files to the CD from Nero Express everything works fine. After this burn I can read the file OK from Windows Explorer. What gives? Am at my wits end. Any help appreciated.

Then, why can't you use Nero Express? Sometimes. when more than one burning software is installed, their drivers conflict.

Have you installed any other CD or DVD software? Have you uninstalled any?

I installed a used TDK (24/10/40) CD drive in my Dimension 8100 machine and then installed the Nero 5.9x version with InCD. Once in, my CD wouldn't read/recognize other discs, not even commercial text discs. It only recognized InCD formatted CD-RW discs. I uninstalled Nero but now my CD ejects any disc except the specially formatted InCD discs. I've run System Mechanic (a registry repair tool), I've checked the device manager and the system information but cannot find anything that works.I installed a used TDK (24/10/40) CD drive in my Dimension 8100 machine and then installed the Nero 5.9x version with InCD. This is a long story...

I had a new Teac CDW and an old HP CDW on my machine.
Both were working perfect with Nero 5.5.
Until I realize that my new Teac W552E had a manufacturing defect. So I removed it and sent it back to the service center.

Now I'm left with the old one. At first the computer said ATAPI uncampatible at every reboot. I connected to the secondary master cable, in place of the new Teac drive, then I changed the BIOS to set secondary master (the HP drive) to Auto and Non-installed to secondary master where the old HP was previousely.
Now, I don't have this Atapi warning.

My HP drive is detected and is able to read CD-R(W) from any application, including WExplorer and Nero.

When I started to burn to CDR-W, Nero shows "HP drive time out" (or something like that), then Nero freeze.
It doesn't seem to write anymore...

I don't think it's a problem of software since it's exactely the same system/config/installation as 2 weeks ago when I removed the new Teac drive.

I'd rather think that it can be a BIOS or a cable connection problem or that the HP drive is dead...

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance for help someone might offer!

I have a hunch my secondary drive is dying (been with me through 2 systems/5+ years) and would like to move all the data from it to a CD. Using Easy CD Creator it tells me something about the data being written too fast so it could not be written to the CD.

Any idea that I have a CD/RW problem or something else? I replaced the power supply last night hoping the terrible loud noise would go away (didn't - must be the hard drive), and will try the CD write again this afternoon. But I thought someone might have another idea for me in case this doesn't work.

Happy Saturday!

A:CD/RW problem - writing too fast?

the horrible loud noise is likely a fan clogged with dust and chattering, though it could be the HDD and if it is, you should attend to it before you lose everything.

As for the CDRW, try burning at slower speeds, also check the cables, disconnect them and reconnect them to make certain they have proper connection. Might also be a buffering problem, or it could be a problem with the burning app.

It's could be simple problem but solve me. It's irritating me.

Hello samrat and welcome to TSF !

We'll need more informations. What kind of data are you trying to write ? Did you make sure the file wasn't too big to hold on a DVD ? Were you able to burn other DVD's properly ?

What's the brand and model of the DVD writer and what burning program do you use ?

I have an OPTORITE 48x16x48 CD-RW drive, CW4802, running Win ME. It seems to write to CD-Rs and CD-RWs that are the regular density 650MB, 74 minute types. However, it balks a lot and gives me a generic error telling me the media is damaged or has scratches or the software is bad, etc. whenever I use 700MB CD-RWs.

I updated the firmware to the latest version, but it wasn't far behind anyway.

I am using new (never written to) Memorex disks. Any tips or fixes on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

hi guys i have encountered with a problem while writing a DVD(data) with NERO

i was not able to change the speed of the DVD writing with nero 6(i even tried 7 n 9) the max speed of writing was always 12x..along with 2x,4x,8x being shown. it shows tht 12x is the maximum... so when i write data in DVD the process starts reaches 1% and a failure message is shown..n the process stops.
i even tried writing at different speeds like 8x.when i started the process its the same result the process was a failure. now the writing speed options are limited to 8x,4x,2x..i wonder where the 12x option has gone!!!!

Please help me guys!!!
