Outlook 2010 Search Highlight and Views problems

Q: Outlook 2010 Search Highlight and Views problems

We have several computers all running the same versions of Office 2010 here, and it seems there was an update of Windows 7 this week that mucked something up, and while I stretched my GoogleFu as much as possible, I can't find any pointers. So last resort, gotta ask people directly.

Two things happened after the patch (maybe more, but this is the most visible).

-The view panes resets itself to a default setting that I can't even explain. I usually use a 'right' reading pane and close up the calendar on the right side, but it doesn't save, it returns to a 'email list' only pane and expands the calendar.
-The search function seems much slower, it used to show results immediately as I type something, but now it REQUIRES that I push enter, and it does not highlight the options. Everything is checked in my search options, and it was working before the patch, it simply stopped.

My Googling produced these results, which I have attempted already :
-Tried checking off and back on the search options, no dice. Even closing Outlook in between.
-Tried running as Administrator and Safe Mode, no changes.
-Turned off and back on Windows Search in the features.
-Turned on Windows Indexing in the features.
-Used the Windows Index Option to rebuild Index (Outlook was checked in the list of programs, but I tried removing and reenabling it for good measure).
-The Indexing option in Outlook itself is grayed out, so I couldn't use that, I even tried to search how enable it and nothing worked.
-Used ScanPST to backup and repair my PST files.

Short of reinstalling Office/Oulook and trying to feed it my PST files, I have attempted everything I could find. I was trying to avoid that since these are work computers of course. We can still receive emails, so it's not a vital thing problem, but an inconvenient one, especially for the highlighting, which makes it easier to scan over emails.

Thank you for your help!

Preferred Solution: Outlook 2010 Search Highlight and Views problems

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

Use what is called an Advanced Search. Select the Inbox and press CTRL+SHIFT+F. After this select "browse ..." and choose subfolders.

I know this is probably an easy question, but I've searched repeatedly on the web and I can't find advice there or in the forums because I'm missing some kind of terminology.

I want to be able to highlight multiple words in Excel and see the home toolbar open every time I open a spreadsheet.
Longer explanation:
I'm using Microsoft Vista 2007 with Excel 2010. I use Excel to make quite a few spread sheets to study for school, and I often have to selectively highlight multiple certain words by hitting ctrl and holding ctrl while highlighting the words. Next I would underline all of the highlighted words. About a month ago it was working fine.
Suddenly out of the blue whenever I try to highlight multiple words by holding ctrl in Excel it won't work. Also, previously when working in excel 2010 the top menu bar would stay on home toolbar with all the option listed, meaning I could keep tinkering with the font uninterrupted. Now after underling just one word at a time the toolbar keeps disappearing with the File tab highlighted green, and I have to keep clicking back to the home tab, then click underline. Have to repeat highlighting each individual word,, clicking home tab, and then underlining. Ugh!
I would love to hear some advice before I tear my hair out in frustration.

I am running Office 2010 Professional (32-bit) on Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).

I have read all the previous posts on Outlook Search but nothing seems to help me.
CP Programs and Features shows a single entry for Microsoft Office Professional 2010 so I can't uninstall just Outlook. I have tried Repair but that made no difference.
I would welcome any advice or suggestions.

A:Problem with Search in OUTLOOK 2010

Microsoft Support helped in the solving of this problem. In retrospect it may have been solved by running SCANpst.exe on the Outlook Data file. SCANpst.exe is found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14\ or in Program Files (x86)\... if using 64 bit Windows 7.

I hope this helps someone else with an Outlook problem.

Hi everyone,

I am using Outlook 2010. Its searching was working fine until 3 weeks ago. I was not able to search new contacts that I added a few weeks ago. However, I could search the old contacts I added years ago. So far, I had tried to rebuild the indexing, repair Outlook and the .ost file, but they all didn't work.

I just rebuilt the indexing one more time 2 days ago. I now can search the old contacts now but not the new ones. Same problem!!!
Does anyone have any clue or solution? THANKS!!!

A:A global Search in MS Outlook 2010

MPREv Not perfect solution but if you have a manageable number of PSTs and reasonably static search criteria this can work well:
Set up a custom search folder in each PST with the same search criteria you seek.
Add them to Favorites View - Must be in Favorites view to add a favorite.
Set folder properties to show either "Unread Items" or "Total Items" as needed
At a glance you can see if any of your PSTs have the desire search results
I use it to check for unread emails and deleted items in 4 separate "delivery" PSTs. Also OL opens, the unread item count and total item count for deleted are shown and you can action each quickly.

Hello Everyone,

In Outlook, I just started maybe within the past month or two using the search very heavily. At first, it worked without error, but then all of a sudden it stopped. I don't know what happened. Now, when I search nothing comes up.

I did a Google search and tried to rebuild the index, the inbox repair tool, Office 2010 Home & Business Repair and restart of the computer. Still the search is not working.

Should I uninstall and re install outlook? Should I start a brand new .pst file? Any other methods.

Thank you all for your help.

A:Outlook 2010 search not working

Here is an update. Since, the options I discovered from doing my research didn't work. I decided to start from scratch. I started a brand new .pst file, deleted my mail profile and started a new one. I also use iCloud for my iPhone and I signed out and removed. I then imported all my content from the old .pst file and just re setup my email accounts again. Then re installed iCloud.

The Good news is, it fixed the problem and my search works flawless. Here is the bad news, the search doesn't work at all for iCloud. Both options under Search Tools: Locations to Search, Outlook and iCloud are both selected, but with still no luck. Since I don't use iCloud for email that is why it is working for email, but I do use iCloud for Calendar, Contacts and mixed tasks.

Is there a way to fix this so I can search Contacts etc. for iCloud?

Thank you for any answers.

I wonder if this is what you are looking for:
There is a drop down menu from the 'font' tab on the ribbon - however, this will highlight text in a document.

If you mean the highlight selected text to, say, 'copy' or 'cut' and paste, then it's not necessarily the answer. As you can see from my illustration below, the selected text is highlighted in blue, which was automatically applied.

The instant search function on my outlook 2010 has stopped working.
I have previously had and then repaired this issue after the initial install of office 2010.
To solve the issue before I did the following.
Search tools > Search options > Indexing options > Modify
Deselect all selected options
Delete and rebuild index (advanced options) and restart machine
Reselect the folders to be indexed.

I have tried to repeat this process but I am unable to delete the MS outlook location
I cannot see the documents and settings folder in the C drive and therefore cannot navigate to User name / appdata / local / microsoft / outlook

I have tried changing the view setting in folder options (to show hidden files)
and I have tried opening outlook as an administrator

I cannot see how to to delete this indexed location

As I keep my PST file on a different partition this means that the search functionality has for the time being stopped completely.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

My Outlook search is not working properly. I cannot search any messages i have received in the last three weeks. If i search a certain recipient that i know has sent me emails both prior to and since Sept. 11th, the only results are from before that date. Anything since that date will not show up in any search. I have checked the indexing options, rebuilt the index, repaired the .PST file (SCANPST.EXE). I can't figure it out. Nothing changed on that day, I did not install any new software or make any changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This post was orginally in the OutLook forum but I was ask to move it to a Windows 7 forum.
Our users are using Windows 7 with Office 2010 delivered using Citrix Xendesktop virtual desktops.  We are using roaming profiles and folder redirection and was wondering if there was any way of changing the Outlook index file locations from C:\ProgramData\Microsoft
which is set by default to a users network home area.  The reason we need to do this is that when a user logs on the index is created but as the Windows 7 image is readonly when the user logs out and then logs back in Outlook 2010 has to re-create the
index files (most frustrating).  I have found the option to change the area but it only display local drives and not network locations.
Is there any way I can do this to achieve our goal.

Tried doing a search and noticed that the instant search in Oulook 2010 has stoped working. Tried this fix below, however it did not work. The rebuild finished in less then half an hour, which is unusual because I ran this on my computer and it took most of the day. Questioning if the computer experincing the issue has cache mode turned on or if their mailbox size is too big. The size of the mailbox is more than 10GB. The email account is an MS Exchange account, so I wonder if it could be an issue on the server.
1.       In Control Panel go to Programs and Features.
2.       On the left pane click on Turn the Windows features ON or OFF
3.       Look for Windows Search and remove the check mark .  Windows will make some changes (configures features) and then ask for a reboot
4.       After restart open Outlook . You will notice that Windows will reconfigure Office. Try some search terms in Outlook. It will complain that Search function is not working, which is correct because it was just deleted
5.       In Control Panel go to Programs (note that you cannot search Control Panel  for Programs and Features !)  and click on Turn Windows Features on or off

A:Search Feature in Outlook 2010 stops working

Doublecheck to make cached mode is turned on. if that doesn't correct it, scroll down to the section on making sure indexing options are configured properly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2769651
The size of the mailbox will make searching more difficult, but it shouldn't disable it. However, mailboxes that large will run into problems of file corruption. You may want to move what's not absolutely necessary into a pst file, or turn on archiving and move older emails into the archive.

We have a bunch of users who are using Outlook 2010 and their Outlook search function is no longer working. This happened just yesterday which there is no coincidence this
is after Microsoft's big June 2017 patch tuesday. I believe one of the updates has
broken the search. I am trying to determine exactly which KB.

for a couple users i was able to rebuild the entire search index on the computer and
that seemed to work. For others that did not, for those users i even tried restoring the computer before the updates and that also did not work.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

I should add that they are all running Windows 7 64bit and Outlook 2010 32bit.

The search function using the search box on outlook is very slow or sometimes leading to no results. This is noticeable even after testing using a different PC setting up my email and having the same size of PST file. Searching takes more than 60 seconds where it should only be maximum 5. The image link will show you that the search options on the ribbon is greyed out.

As per the help, i should go to services.msc and confirm that the Windows Search service is running and automatic. And it is. Even tried stopping and starting again, and restarting the whole PC. So hopefully there is another solution.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1
Office: Office 2010 x86 SP1
Outlook Hotmail Connector: x86 Version 14.0.5139.5001

I believe I have the latest Hotmail Connector installed.

Despite "include messages from the deleted items folder in each data file when searching all items" being ticked in Outlook's Search Options (File --> Options --> Search), it does not include the Deleted Items folder when clicking "Try searching again in All Mail Items".

I know the e-mail is in Deleted Items. Deleted Items (i.e -Bin) is included when searching All Mail Items using my Gmail IMAP account, so I know this setting generally works.

Any idea why it's not working when searching from my Hotmail account? Thanks

If I click on the root folder above Inbox, search and include "subfolders" deleted items is included.

p.s - In case anyone asks why I would do this, some times I delete e-mails I wish to retrieve and currently I need to search "All Mail items" and then "Deleted Items" separately.

Also tried to rebuild the SRS file (as per instructions here: http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner-user/srs-file/)

Is is possible to either delete or hide the "search folders" and "deleted iems" folders that appear in each pst file created?

We use individual pst files to file our emails per current job. But the folders above take up a lot of visual space in the toolbaro it would be preffered to hide or delete them.

We do not use either to "file" emails so the compact now option in the data file managment dialog box does not really apply since I believe this is really a benefit when the file is archived.

A:Search and Deleted Items folders in Outlook 2010 pst files

Annoyitated - Try this:

There are two "Navigation Views" which can be displayed in the OL 2010 Navigation Pane.
"Classic tree view": All open PSTs are listed in alphabetical order and, when expanded, display meaningful folders as well as the folders you want to hide but can not.
"Favorites view": The favorites view has two sections. Favorites appear in a flat tree in the top half and PSTs appear in the bottom half and behave just like the classic view.
Toggle between Navigation Views Select any Top level PST folder | View Tab | Navigation Pane (there are other techniques to toggle between layouts you can explore on your own)

Adding a Favorite: Any Folder or SubFolder, of any Type, can be added to the favorites view. NOTE: You Must be in the Favorites View to select a folder to Show in FavoritesToggle into Favorites View
Right select a folder from your various PSTs
Click "Show in Favorites"
Favorite Folder will appear at bottom of Favorites section
Drag Favorite folder into a desired ordinal position
Collapse all of the PSTs in lower half and you see a clean looking folder navigation list
Problems: I have some 40+ PSTs of which more than 20 of these are generally open. Sometimes Favorites view does not show all of my Favorites because the PSTs consume too much real estate. I haven't tried to understand why - could be memory constraints. I find if I close some PSTs and then reopen OL, they magically reappear.

This is on my office computer for a Gmail account. Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.

Early this week, I started having problems with instant search not providing all results. Same searches I have previously used. Before contacting our IT guy, I changed search options to include results from all folders instead of current folder. That was on Tuesday, now I don't recall if that worked for all folders or not, but I know it still didn't work on current folder instant searches. Our IT guy suggested deleting history in Google-Chrome, which I did and re-booted, no change. I then found suggestions to run "conversation cleanup" and to archive, which I did. Neither have fixed my current folder instant search issue.

No matter whether search options is set to all or current, when searching in current folder only, only items since 11/1/16 are found (when this started, none were being found). If I remember correctly, 11/1/16 was the day I cleared by history in Chrome. Could it be that conversation cleanup and/or archiving did work but that having cleared history is actually the problem? If so, can that be fixed; if not, other suggestions please?

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with MS Office 2010 Professional, MS Office Pro 32bit.

I have 3 problems which I have been unable to solve. Non of the 3 makes Outlook inoperable but cumulatively they are annoying.
In order of importance.

1) I attempted to set up a POP3 account in Outlook using the auto configure setup. The setup failed so I tried install using the manual configure. It tells me that an account by that name already exists-use a different name. The original failed account setup is not visible. How do I find it and delete it and then re-install using the original name.

2) The send/receive button on the main ribbon does not work. I receive email fine when I open outlook or the auto send/receive is activated every 30 minutes. Nothing happens when I select the ribbon button or the quick access bar. I know it is not active in the background since I click the show progress button and there is not activity.

3) Mail 32bit does not work on the control panel. On a search for fixes for the first 2 problems many suggestions are to change or altering the profile. When I try to access the profile through the control panel nothing happens when I click on "Mail (32bit)" .

There doesn't seem to be a repair function for outlook 2010 as with previous versions. I don't want to completely re-install unless I have to. I have 4 PoP3 accounts set up (can't get that 5th installed) each with its own pst file.

Has anybody had problems with Outlook 2010 slowing down so much it hangs up and you get a "Not responding" error? It will stay in the "Not Responding" mode for 30 minutes and sometimes hours . Also, I can't click to delete anything. Once and while it will let me click on sometime, but goes dead again.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times, but still does it!
Any idea to get it back to normal ?

I'm asking for my aunt, not myself, she only sent me a screenshot. I hope you can help anyway (the language is Slovenian):
She would like to merge together the two "accounts" (it's really only one account - the one she uses) that are pointed with the two-end red arrow. I think this happened because she saved some old stuff from her older version of Outlook (I'm not sure about that though). She has some other problems too, but that's the first one.

What to do to fix this? Thank you!

I have a friend that just purchased a new HP computer with Windows 7. He bought MS Office 2010 and installed it, I helped set his email up for him in Outlook. I exported all his folders and WAB from Outlook Express from his old XP computer, imported everything into Outlook and everything worked fine. When I sent emails, none of them showed up in the Sent folder. I sent emails to my account and revieved them, so it is sending the email. Also he dosen't recieve mail at all, he recieves mail fine on the old computer with OE. We called his internet provider to make sure eveything was set up properly, they use POP 3. I would certainly appreciate any suggesions to resolve these issues.

Thanks, rjacobsen

Hi everyone!

I am looking for a way to search a text for a list of words and to have those words permanently highlighted in the text.

I`d like to use this for language learning. I have a list of 6000+ words that I need to be familiar with. I would like to be able to search a text (a video game script, a news article, a book, etc) for these words and have them permanently highlighted at the same time. Does this make sense?

Is there something like this out there?

Thanks for your time!

A:Search for and permanently highlight multiple entries

Only thing I can think of is Ctrl + F each time you open the file and enter the words as your search string . not really what you are looking for though .

Yes, can anyone help me figure out how to use the Find and Replace command (Ctrl-F) in excel to highlight the cells that's been found in yellow or any color.

Sometimes, I would have to verify and match serial numbers from a hardcopy and file that was sent to me. It would be great (and would make life easier) if I could have excel or the Find and Replace command to automatically highlight each cell that is found. Thanks

I am currently having problems with Outlook 2010 - when I try to open it, I get the message. "Not Implemented" - when I try to uninstal the program, I get another message which says "This product installation has been corrupted. Run setup again from the CD, DVD, or other original installation source"
I have done that (34bit) and still having the problem. So reinstalling it over the previous copy doesn't work, nor does trying to uninstal it, to start afresh. It doesnt matter if I try to repair OR uninstal, I still get the same message.

I have been running both 2010 and 2003, as I prefer Word & Publisher 2003, and for some years they have been troublefree.

Can anyone suggest anything?

I have two Hotmail accounts -- one I use for work-related, and one for personal. I usually access them from home with Outlook 2010.
About a week ago, the one I use for Personal stopped getting new messages. I later found out I couldn't send any either, they were just being stored in the "Out"  box. When I checked the status bar, I saw the "#80041004 - Error in Synchronizing Folder Hierarchy" error. I was able to log on, however, through www.hotmail.com
I immediately started searching the web for answers, and I tried everything that was suggested:
 - Checked the date/time on my computer
 - Checked the "Proxy Server" settings in both Firefox and IE
 - Making sure all the folders were in the root directory
 - Removed the account, and tried to re-add it
 - Removed the entire profile and tried to create a new one
Here's TWO funny things:
1) A few days ago (can't remember which day,) I had Office open (for my other email acct) and all of a sudden, the "broken" email account downloaded a few messages. I was glad, thinking it might have just been a temporary glitch, but the next day, it stopped again.
2) I got the bright idea to open "Windows Live Mail (which I used to use), but when I entered my password (it's changed since I last used it) it tells me it's not valid. It's the same password I use on www.hotmail.com, so I don't know why it won't work. Ever since I tried it, I'm not unable to re-add the Account in Office -- I'm getting a "0x80041059 ... Read more

I'm running Office 2010 Professional Plus on Win 7 32.

Starting after yesterday's MS update, I've been having a strange problem with auto-correct:

If I'm writing a new email, everything works fine. However, when replying or forwarding an email none of the auto-correct actions work with the exception of capitalization (e.g., convert -- to m-dash, ... to ellipses, smart quotation marks, etc).

I have tried the following, with no success:
1. Repair office
2. Run scanpst.exe
3. Started outlook in safe mode

I'm pretty sure that all my outlook settings are correct.

Any suggestions?

Hi ,
New software - old problems Clear the messages from the server (not leave them on the server)
On a new account creation , take messages from a specific date and further(not all the messages that were prevously opened and now are lying on the server)
Unopened items directory is missing
Integration with AV software (i.e NIS or KIS) - they don't recognize the mailbox and their addons are not visible in it (wild guess maybe because oultook is x64 and they are x32 ?)

A:Outlook 2010 beta - 4 problems - NEED HELP

1. To change the behavior of the messages to server,
Select File
Account Settings
Double click on your account from the list
Select More settings on the right
Select Advanced
At the bottom, change how you want messages to be handled.

2. Don't know if this can be done.
3. Never saw this directory. If you are speaking about the "evelope icon" in the system tray, it is not included in the beta but is in the final Outlook 2010.

4. If it is x64 Office, then connections to x86 (32bit) functions do not work as you suspect.

I have had about one week of frustration and I am hoping someone can help with this.

I had Outlook 2010 on a hosted exchange with Apptix. The cost was 35.00 per month so I changed to Office 365 )business essentials I think) with GoDaddy. This is where the problems started.

When ever I try to get Outlook 2010 and Office 365 to work together I can't do it. I think it has to do with old data files or something which tries to redirect my to the Apptix exchange which I no longer have.

Talking to support at GoDaddy is like talking to a rock.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2010 3 times today and it still does not work. Could it be that it finds the old data or .pst or .ost files or something else?

I desperately need this to start working.

Any help highly appreciated.

Thank you
