Microsoft/Windows Update Install: Fails Manually - Works Automatically

Q: Microsoft/Windows Update Install: Fails Manually - Works Automatically

Windows XP SP3 [32-bit] Internet Explorer v8

Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

NOTE: It is only the install that fails - "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". I have no problem selecting and downloading updates.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

Preferred Solution: Microsoft/Windows Update Install: Fails Manually - Works Automatically

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Run ALL these. If that doesn't fix it, hit the tool button and reinstall BITS.

You may also try to download the updates in clean boot state and check if that helps in resolving the issue.
Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may have to contact the program manufacturer for any updates or uninstall and re-install the program.

Refer the following Microsoft KB article for more information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:

Hello all! Hoping I can get some help here, this issue is driving me totally insane.

I have a Gigabyte G41M-Combo motherboard with an Atheros AR8151 ethernet component.

I re-installed Windows 7 today. It failed to automatically detect the ethernet component, so I couldn't get online. No big deal, I just used Google Translate to painstakingly navigate Atheros' website at a friend's house until I could find the driver files, download them to a cellphone, and take them home.

Yet alas, when I open Device Manager and point it to the drivers I want to use, it tells me it won't, because Windows has cleverly determined that I'm already running the best drivers for that device.

Weird. So I totally uninstall the drivers (from Device Manager), scan for hardware changes, then update the drivers again, pointing to the files I downloaded.

Again, within 10 seconds -- "Windows has failed to install device drivers!" "Windows has determined that you're already using the best device drivers."

How can I force it to listen to me, and just install what I ask it to? I honestly have absolutely zero idea of anything else I could do. It won't let me install new drivers, and it won't install its own.

A:Windows fails to auto-install network card drivers, then won't allow it manually.

if it's a brand-name PC, you must use only drivers from the PC manufacturer's website.
On brand-name (OEM) computers, drivers direct from the device or motherboard manufacturer will usually be the wrong ones. OEM hardware is custom-made, hence custom drivers are required. Only the PC manufacturer has these.

So, Secunia has just told me that the versions of Microsoft Outlook 2002, Word 2002, and Excel 2002 I have on my computer (Windows XP Home SP3) are unsecure and need to be updated. Secunia provides direct download links to Microsoft for these updates, but there are some hassles (I know! Hassles? With Microsoft?!).First, it opens IE -- it apparently won't work with Firefox. Second, all the update links lead to a page that signs me up for a Microsoft Update service that gives Microsoft even greater access to my PC.Unless it's absolutely necessary, I just have no desire to provide more access to my computer to a bunch of strangers.Does anyone know if there's a way to update these programs without signing up for a service? Even today, not all computers are hooked up to the internet -- I figure there must be a way to just get the updated files. Thanks!Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

A:Update Microsoft (Windows XP) programs manually?

Try this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enThat's the service pack... so it updates the whole shi-bang. If this wasn't what you were talking about, just reply and I'll keep looking. Hope that helped!

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Microsoft: Manually Installing Windows 10 Creators Update Could Break Down PCs

Microsoft pushed the go-ahead button for Windows 10 Creators Update on April 5, allowing experienced users to manually download the new OS version on their PCs.

One week later, on April 11, Microsoft also started the official rollout of the Creators Update as an automatic upgrade via Windows Update, but in this case, the release takes place gradually, and some users need to wait more than others to receive it.

As a result, more and more users are tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update manually, but Microsoft says that you shouldn?t do this unless you are an experienced user.
Critical issues
The reason is that the Creators Update might be hit by compatibility issues, either hardware or software, and when you manually install it, the upgrade process bypasses any checks that could prevent critical problems. On Windows Update, on the other hand, Microsoft is only making the Creators Update available for your system when it is 100 percent sure that all problems are gone.

?It?s important to note that when customers use the Software Download Site to manually install the Creators Update they bypass many of these blocks,? Microsoft explains.

?Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless you?re an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you. When your device becomes eligible for the C... Read more

Anyhow, I wish to try to install it. Can't find how.
I didn't put this post in the Windows Update forum because I'm not ready to troubleshoot yet. Just want to find out how to install the failed update.

I have an OLD computer with a 2.4 GHz processor and 1 GB ram, running XP 32 bit. I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7, So I tried to install 32 bit windows 7, knowing my computer couldn't handle 64 bit. However, at the end, it simply told me "Installation Failed" and reverted to XP, with all my files. I tried multiple times, then I tried installing 64 bit windows 7, and surprisingly, it worked. However, it is laggy beyond belief, so I tried installing 32 bit again. Again the installation failed. Now I'm thinking of reverting BACK to XP. Please help!

A:Windows 7 32 bit install fails, 64 bit install works?

You should have run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which would clue you in advance to any issues you must resolve.

If you're willing to immediately upgrade RAM to max, at least 2gb might pass muster. I run 32 bit Win7 on old hardware with 2gb fine. Of course it would be better to have more.

Greetings fellow Windows enthusiasts,

I was asked to update our Windows 2008 R2 server from IE 10 to IE11, and it will not install properly.  I have looked up several solutions to this issue, so far nothing has worked.

I disabled McAfee HBSS in safe mode, restarted the PC and tried to run Windows Update managed by a WSUS server.  The update gets approved and pushed out to the 2008 R2 server.  It downloads IE11, tries to install, then fails/errors-out at the last
second.   I have tried this a few times, rebooted and either get error code 9C47 or 9C49.

Some of the fixes I have tried:

I turned of internet connectivity and the anti-virus, that did not workI tried the Windows Update repair tool, that did not work  I tried the Windows System Readiness tool, that did not work   I tried to scan the system files for errors with sfc /scannow
and that did not work  I tried installing the other updates first, restarting and it still fails I removed the server from WSUS and re-added it and it will not update   I tried the stand-alone IE11 installer, and it fails at the very last step and then gives me an error with a link to troubleshoot IE installations   I have uninstalled IE10, and now am totally stuck with the absolutely horrible experience of IE9 SURT returns no errorsSFC returns no errors

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

That update means it is for .NET Framework 1.1-SP1. SP1 refers to the NET Framework, not your XP version.
Go to the Windows Update website, let it scan your computer for updates and this update shows again, try to install it there. If it fails again then don't worry about it.
Have you checked your"Add/Remove Programs" to see if you have .NET Framework 1.1 installed on your computer,or .NET Framework 1.1 SP1?

Sorry for the short title, I didn't know how to word my issue.

My problem started when I had started getting BSOD's. To fix I had de-fragmented (didn't work) and then I had to do a system restore which appeared to fix it although it didn't keep my files instead deleted them. I tried installing a game on steam that required framework 3.5 but It failed to install giving me this error code: '8007371B'. I had researched and found no luck with finding any fixes, it's not even heard of. I tried doing a factory reset with comes up with the same error code, I have also tried upgrading to win 10 and using a media (installation disk) to install which had no luck and come up with the same error code.

I am desperate as soon I will not be able to upgrade to windows 10.

I'm using Windows XP, SP3. My computer is a Dell Optiplex GX270 (full tower, not the smaller horizontal things), 3.20 GHz processor with 1GB RAM.

I tried to use Windows Update today after finding out that I 11 critical updates. They all downloaded, but when it goes to install, it just fails. I've turned off my anti-virus, and my firewall. I've restarted, and nothing is working. I'm stumped.

A:[SOLVED] Windows update fails to install?

Is this right after you installed SP3?

Try this:

1. Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run. or Windows key + R (faster)

Copy and paste each of the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Restart computer.

Then run the update again . .

Hi,

I am trying to install Windows Update KB3074543 but it fails over and over. If anyone has any suggestions/thoughts, please let me know.

Thanks,

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions
and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Hey guys,
I am having this problem quite a long time now. Whenever I want to install updates from windows update in order to be able to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, it shows me message while rebooting: Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes, Do not turn off your computer. Then showing me couple of these multiple times:
and yes, you guessed it, I am once again where I started. I tried literally everything I found on the internet, and nothing ever worked. I just want to upgrade to Windows 8.1(which I can't aswell but I think the reason why, is Windows Update). My last chance is reinstalling Windows but I would like to solve this with different option. Thank you for any tips or anything that could eventually lead to solving this problem of mine.

First of all, I'm new here, so try to be patient as I stumble through the rules.
Normally I'm pretty good at fixing software issues, but this one has me stumped.

I have a machine running Win7 h/p which seems to have installed any other updates fine, but always chokes on IE10, throwing "Code 9C59 Windows Update encountered and unknown error."
(As a side note, I've *never* seen it encounter a *known* error.)

What I have done with no success:
Renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder.
Turned off Norton's 360.
Uninstalled IE9 and reinstalled (it said I had a newer version of IE9 installed *after* I had removed it and rebooted!)
Tried downloading and running the redistributable installer for IE10.

All failed. I have since downloaded and run SURT, run an sfc scan, and checked the Windows error log while I waited. There are loads of instances of this in the event viewer:

"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems."

I compressed a copy of the CBS folder and attached it.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Greg

Any solution ?

A:Windows update KB974431 fails to install

I've read here and elsewhere that this is due to an invalid key, supposedly you need to remove your bad key, extend the trial period if necessary, and then you can install the update

A:Windows Update KB2592687 fails to install

I just ran across this with a user and after some research it ended up being that the Windows Firewall Service was missing.  Please confirm that your "Windows Firewall" service is listed in "Services.msc".  If not see: (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprosecurity/thread/5366225a-46e7-4d6c-a389-8bd18a5c3aad).
There is a link inside that post that resets the service.  Once you run the tool to fix the service restart the computer and ensure the "Windows Firewall" service is listed and proceed to try your update again.

The user I worked with had McAfee Firewall installed and I can only assume it removed the default Windows one which is apparently a prerequisite for this patch.

For more than 2 weeks I have been trying to install windows security update KB2564958 and i will fail to install giving error code 0x80246007. I looked up this error code online and it means “NOT DOWNLOADED” but I am sure it was downloaded because I went directly to microsoft.com and looked up the stand alone of this update and downloaded it and my download manager showed the progress bar downloading 744 KB which I saved to desktop but when I tried to onstall it the setup was interrupted at the beginning saying “Setup was cancelled”.

I have scanned my pc with Spybot, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Norton Security suite and they found no viruses or troyans at all (note that I don’t have any antispyware actively monitoring on task-bar I use all of them manually to scan so there is no conflicts).

I ran Chkdsk and found no errors. I ran Registry First Aid and clea-ned the registry to no avail, this up-date will not install. There must be some bug or this update was corrupted since they offered it. I have tried several options that I found online and did not solve the issue. My Norton protection and all other softwares never interfered with Microsoft Updates.

I contacted Microsoft support and after they gave me a list of several options to solve the problem that I followed to the letter to no avail they asked me to use (and pay) phone support and I replied to them that Microsoft offers FREE complete support for problems related to Windows security updates and I refuse to ... Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3197954 Fails to Install as Well

Windows 10 cumulative updates are certainly pretty helpful for the majority of users running Microsoft?s latest OS version, but at the same time, they are turning into sort of nightmare for others who can?t simply install them successfully.

Issues with Windows 10 cumulative updates have been around for a while, and Microsoft has tried to fix them on several occasions, but for some reason, they keep coming back pretty much in the same form.

KB3197954 makes no exception, and after being pushed to Windows 10 users last week, it appears that it fails to install on a number of machines due to a cause that?s yet to be determined.

More than just installation issues
Posts on Microsoft?s Community forums are pointing towards various problems experienced with cumulative update KB3197954, including system freezes, but in most of the cases, it?s the typical ?failing to install? issue that makes it impossible for some users to deploy the patch on their computers.

?Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3197954) keeps failing to install on my system. The install starts fine but while restarting claims the install has failed and reverts everything. Windows update history only tells me that the update ?failed to install,?? one user is reporting, adding that the error that he gets is ?Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F... I just downloaded 102 updates for Windows and Office it is approximately 600MB and above. After downloading, some updates maybe, 23 failed to install and 3 were said to be not needed. And I restarted my PC, after restarting, Windows Update prompts me to install the remaining updates which is not installed for the first time. Then It installs the 90% then restarts the machine, after restarting the remaining not installed updates installs successfully. What maybe the cause of that problem?

Hi. Because I recently formatted my computer's hard drive, I have had to go online and redownload all of the critical and other windows updates for my Windows XP Pro computer. When I first started to download the updates, I had 19 Critical Updates to download. Now I think I have 10 or something like that. Well, these last 10 or whatever absolutely refuse to install! They are apparently downloaded though because I attempt to redownload them and they "download" at speeds way faster than what dialup is capable of. Well, then it proceeds to install the updates. However, every single update fails. During the attempted installation of these updates by Windows Update, my computer accesses the floppy drive for some unkown reason. It does this only once or twice. I believe that during these downloads I am running programs such as Norton Internet Security 2002 (but I don't know why this would affect it because my other downloads completed fine with this and the rest of the programs mentioned here running). I was also running Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger (I think), Kazaa Lite (I think), and Norton Antivirus 2002 (with Autoprotect enabled). I have not tried downloading these files with any of these programs disabled. Oh yeah, I use AOL for my Internet connection but I use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 to do most if not all of my web browsing which does include Windows Update. Please help me with this problem!
