Internet Explorer Search Function

Q: Internet Explorer Search Function

I'm using IE v5.5, Windows 95 and my search function seems to have been taken over by a search engine I'd never seen before. Instead of searching using the Search Assistant and previewing results from all selected search engines in the side preview pane; I just get results from one site (ixquick).

Can anyone help me get rid of ixquick and return to the regular function?

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer Search Function

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First you can make sure your system is free of spyware/malware.
Follow these instructions please.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

After those Run the System File Checker

Hello, a couple of days ago I visited http://www.warez.com and now my computer is acting up. When I click the search button on my explorer a lot of strange stuff happens. First, instead of getting the usual search engines popping up on the left of the screen, a porn site pops up instead. Second, my home page is automatically changed to another porn site. Third, three porn/download sites are added to my favorites list. And finally, numerous windows with porn sites pop up every once in a while. This is really pissing me off and I have no clue whats going on. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks

Windows XP Pro SP3, Avira, Comodo FW. Since the end of last week, if I try to use the Windows Search function in MyDocs it runs all right until it gets to a particular folder with a name beginning with "G," and just keeps chasing its own tail in that folder. Explorer.exe immediately goes ape and uses 100% of CPU. Even if I stop Search and everything else running, explorer.exe won't quit, and I have to reboot to be able to use the computer at all.

Search identifies directories it is looking in, but not files. So I transferred all of the files in the G folder one by one to a new folder, doing a new search each time I moved one, and got to the file that set off the weird behavior. I eliminated this file and tried again. This time it got as far as another file, this time beginning (appropriately) with "F," and the whole problem came up again. I shut down, restarted, and now it goes crazy in the original "G" folder.

Avira, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, and McAfee Stinger find no malware. While any of these programs was running, the computer was v slow.

Where do I go from here?

the start menu program search still works, but when I search in explorer for files I know exist, I get 'no result' ...usually. I mean, it's weirdly inconsistent. I can get results if I type in one or two letters, and I get incomplete results on other things (after finding a file myself, it showed up in search, while others with the same name didn't; a result got a hit as a folder title but not as all the files inside with that name).

I know [for some reason] Win7 search would never find "searching.doc" if I type in "rch" or "hing", so that's not the problem--I'm typing in the beginning of words.
I can only think of one correlation with this discovery of malfunction...

the other day I installed 'AbiWord' (from the '92-free-great-programs-windows-7' list) ...didn't like it, so I went to uninstall it.

...but it seems to have also been responsible for dumping a bunch of files on a non system partition (how it chose that directory, I have no idea!) -- what the files belonged to was listed on the CP uninstall list as Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistibutable blahblahblah (another one such thing is on the list currently, but with a different number at the end) ...because it had no business being there in my data partition I got rid of it. ...no idea if search was broken before I did that.

third-party search program Agent Ransack is able to yield the proper results (i.e., listing everything that fits the criteria)
is anyone familiar with this prob... Read more

A:search function in explorer yields no results?!

It may be simpler just to use Everything Search and turn indexing off. That's how I'm running. When Everything first comes up it takes a few seconds to scan. Once it's running it gets notified of new files. The notification system is better than what Windows uses.

The problem....

Typing anything into the search box on the start menu or in windows explorer/control panel has no effect, no results are found. It doesnt say no result are found it just displays nothing. This extends to everything, searching for files as well as things like 'cmd' and 'regedit'.

Example - If i search for 'notes', the name of a txt file on my desktop, it finds nothing. If I then click see more results I get the following message. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"
I am the only user on my laptop and am of course the admin so this message makes no sense.
Solutions tried....

- Doing a full reindexing of everything from the indexing options.
- Turning the search feature off, restarting and turning it on again.
- Using the inbuilt troubleshooter to find problems (none found).
- Using the downloaded troubleshooter from microsoft (found two problems and corrected them, still not working though).

So now i'm out of ideas. Can anyone suggests any fixes?
Thanks for your time.

I have recently been tasked with upgrading my office to Windows 10 Professional from Windows 7. For a few weeks we encountered just minor bugs mostly caused by software compatibility. Recently however, I have found that some computers in the office (not all) generate a Visual C++ runtime error when one attempts to use the search function in file explorer. However, this error does not occur when the computer searches its own C drive, but rather when it tries to search a shared drive on our server. The server runs Windows Server 8 (2012). The odd thing about this problem is that it seemed to develop over time. At first, the computers would display "Working on it..." while they attempted to search the shared drive for minutes before the user prompted to back out. But now, the search function produces the runtime error and kills the file explorer, as well as causing a black screen for a brief moment.

I have tried using autoruns to disable all the extensions to the file explorer shell to no avail. I have also attempted to search in safe mode and the same error occurs.

Thanks for your help.

I have Windows 7 (upgraded from Vista). At first I was able to use the (Windows) Explorer search function with success. Now it is not working. But here is the strange thing: it works in some folders, but not others. Does this mean that the function is turned off somewhere for the folders where it is not working?

I am able to use Google Desktop to locate what I am looking for, but I want Windows Explorer's search function to work in any folder I need to search.

Win XP (sp2)

Last night I decided to perform maintenance on my computer, which included:

-uninstall any programs that were outdated or that I did not use (via Revo Uninstaller)

-update/upgrade existing programs

-clean temp folders and junk files (CCleaner)

-remove leftover registry entries (Ace Utilities)

-perform a defragmentation (PerfectDisk)

In a nutshell, I encountered problems uninstalling a few programs including Kaspersky Internet Security, XP Smoker PRO and Java RE. During the uninstall process of one of those programs....it messed up my Windows XP.

When I try to access the search window....it's blank and only the yellow dog in the corner is visible. When I open up IE7.....I can only access yahoo.com and a few other sites. Any other site I try going to doesn't load (white screen). When I go into the "My Documents" folders, there's a moving flashlight for a couple of minutes before it opens up the folder.

Also when I reboot, I'm getting a blue or black (color changes) background screen with a large box in the middle with weird characters on the left corner and an "OK" button towards the bottom. The ONLY way to get back into my desktop is to click on "OK."

I ran "CHKDSK /R" twice and it did not fix this issue.

I do not have my Windows XP CD to repair or reinstall the OS and I need to find an alternate method of resolving this issue. Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Most of the time when I try to access the browser I get a blank

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Included in that message is a statement that says: "To see what data

the following error signature:

"AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16441 ModName: kernel32.dll

Hello everyone!
Last night I installed Bitcomet (latest version). Well I'm done using it and I uninstalled it via programs and features. Then I rebooted. Now when I find a file on Internet explorer 7 (any kind of file really) that I want to save or open, nothing happens.

If I click on a file to download the usual Windows Prompt opens and asks me to Save/Open/Cancel and if I click Open or Save, nothing happens. This use to work fine before I installed BitComet.

I figured out the problem. When you install bit comment it ties itself to I.E. browser extension during the install. So it kinda becomes the download manager for I.E. So I need to figure out how to set this back to default since I uninstalled Bitcomet.
I set programs to default. I looked in file extensions and that looks normal. Crap this sucks!
Any ideas?

A:Internet Explorer Save/Open Function

You could try opening Internet Options in Control Panel. Click on the Programs tab and select Manage Add-Ons. It is possible that removing BitComet did not remove the reference within Internet Explorer.
Other than that may be worth checking your File Associations and make sure BitComet is not set as the default application for opening specific file extensions.

I've never seen anything like this. Okay, here's the system rundown --- Running win 7 pro sp1 64 bit on a Dell xps 8000. Replaced hard drive one month ago, and I've used Seagate's diagnostic tool to check out hard drive, which didn't find any errors with the hard drive.

So, here's problem 1:
Computer was running great up until four days ago. It wouldn't wake up out of sleep properly. It would freeze. I would have to reboot to wake it up. It won't even let me LOG OFF correctly because when I go to log back on, I don't get the prompt to choose the user or enter my password. When I reboot --- that I can only do by shutting on and off the power, it's fine. The computer starts up fine in SAFE MODE, so I'm not detecting any issues there.

Problem 2:
Internet explorer 10 (got it with one of the updates two weeks ago) simply would HANG and not open. Even with I would click it once and open task manager to see what was happening, it showed multiple instances of explorer open. So, what I did was turn OFF Explorer 10 in the "turn windows features on or off" section. But when I when to turn them back on to see if it would reset, I not only lost the default windows icons from the start bar, Explorer refused to initialize when I tried to start it from "Programs" or from clicking the explorer.exe icon in both Programs (64 bit) and Programs (x86).

To this point I've done the full scan disk, and also run SCAN NOW. I also have anti malware software ... Read more

If anyone can figure this one out, they are a better man than I. The "Search" function in my History file in Explorer (5.0) will not seem to clear. When I click on the History icon on the tool bar, I get a split screen on my Explorer window showing the contents of the History folder. If I have cleared the contents of the file in internet options and cleared temp. internet files, the file is clear. But, when I hit the "Search" function in the split screen display and type in a letter and then hit search, there are a few links which still appear. Even if I right click and try to delete them, they will not go away. Thus, they still appear when I have auto complete on even though I cleared my history file. I even tried uninstalling Explorer and reinstalling it (they must get saved in the older default Explorer which will not go away). When I go to the history file by way of the c: drive, they do not appear since there is no search function in it. I'm baffled. If anyone has any ideas, I would be happy to hear them. I assume another way to solve this is to delete the back up explorer which came with Windows 95... but I don't know how to do this either since there is no uninstall option for the earlier version. If someone knows how to uninstall it, I would appreciate info on that too.

PS: This person is using Verizon Online DSL, and the software is installed... we have cable... would that have anything to do with it not being able to connect? IU checked all the connections and the cables do work on other computers.....

Just recently, my Windows 8.1 desktop seems to have developed two issues. Not completely sure they are related, but upon doing some research on the internet, it seems that they may be.

First issue I noticed is that I cannot open any of my pictures using the photo app. Normally I open images with Windows Photo Viewer, which still works, but occasionally, I open them using the "open with" function with the photo app (Photo) for quck editing, like cropping, etc. Today, when I tried to open anything in the app, the app comes up, thinks for a second, then goes black and minimizes itself to the tray at the bottom of the screen. If I click on that, it simply goes through the same process. No error messages, just no image and it won't stay up on the screen. So in googling this problem, some mention the Windows Search indexing may not be picking up the photos. I go to the "start" screen as I normally do and simply start typing services.msc to bring up that services window, but nothing happens, and instead of getting a list of search choices as normal, the screen just freezes for a minute. I then clicked on the little magnifying icon to bring up the search box, and again, nothing happens and the screen freezes for a minute.

So I manually went to Services and checked to make sure that the Search service is on, and it is, it is set to "automatic (delayed start)" I tried switching it to just the automatic start, but that did not make any difference. ... Read more

I have run into a nasty problem, when using the internet and using any search website, google, yahoo, bing, etc.. , I click on a result and it will redirect me to a seemingly random page or a site with similar things that I searched but on a totally different site from where i searched from. This happens no mater which browser i use, IE, firefox, opera, etc..

Another problem is that internet explorer will randomly start up and will not even pop up on my taskbar but sounds( music, advertisements, etc..) will be playing and iexplorer.exe will be in my process, ending the process will make the sounds dissappear. if left running i will eventaully get a message saying IE needs to close.

I am running Windows XP and have tried malwarebytes, superantispyware, and avira antivir. Needless to say, this is very annoying. Anything you can do to help me?

Also, it appears programs cannot detect that I am connected to the internet, I tried running a setpoint 6.30 install for my wireless mouse and it says I am not connected to the internet. Sorry to string together problems like this.

Is there a way to search for a file name (like in previous versions of Widows) rather than searching for anything containing that word? For example,
I want to search a for files with the word 'Pension' in the title, but intead I receive thousands of results for files called containing the word pension as well as those with 'pension' in the title.

A:Make Windows 7 search function search file names only

Feel free but you could also try using keywords in search filters. See this page under the heading "Using keywords to refine a search"
More info here
Please also read the comments at the bottom of that page - esp the one titled "Lengthy discussion of a related topic "

I have IE6 with XP and SP2. I can access websites as normal, but today I noticed that I can't use Google or Yahoo etc. (I could yesterday, and suspect the kids have changed something but they deny it)

If I put a value in the search parameter field and click the "Search" button, nothing happens - no search occurs and there's no error message.

Eventually I've realised that IE isn't processing any url that contains parameters (as in a search), but it will process those without. For example, on the current google.co.uk home page, clicking on the hyperlinks for Images, Groups, News, etc doesn't work (they have parameters, shown in the status bar), but clicking the More>>> link does work as this is a simple link to a page.

Can anyone tell me what to do next ? (Can't find anything at MSoft)

A:Internet Explorer - can't search

Offhand I don't know what would cause this other than a possible search page hijacker.

The quickest solution might simply be to do a System Restore and see if that corrects it.

If you have different User Accounts on the machine (and with kids you probably should, just giving them limited privileges), you can check whether the problem exists in more than one profile.

Welcome to TSG!

First do the following:

Go here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and download Adaware 6

Install the program and launch it.

I strongly recommend that you read the help file to familiarize yourself with the program.

Before running the scan look at the top of the main window and you will see a Gear Icon. This is where you configure the settings. Click on that and then in the next window that pops up click on the "Scanning" tab on the left side. Under "Drives and Folders" put a check by "Scan within archives" and below that under "Memory and Registry" put a check by all the options there.
The click on the "Tweak" tab and under "Scanning engine" put a check by "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then......under "Cleaning engine" put a ckeck by "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot" then click "Proceed"

Next in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on "Check for updates now" and get the latest referencefiles.
After getting the latest referencefiles you are ready to scan.

Click "Start" and in the next window make sure "Active in depth scanning" is checked then click "Next" and the scan will begin.

When it is finished put a check by and let it fix everything it finds.

Restart your computer.
Then go here http://spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?...n&pag... Read more

Hello boopathis, Welcome to TSF!

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow …please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Hey guys, a few days ago I installed cyberdefender, but it was a bad program for me so I uninstalled it. What I didn't expect was, cyberdefender created a new search provider for my IE. So now, everytime I type something in the search box for IE, it automatically become the address. For example, if I type "how to get cookies" in the search box, it became "http://www.howtogetcookies.com", and ofcourse there is no such site; therefore, everytime I uses the search box, the page become not invalid. So it is very frustrating. Please help me get rid of this stupid search function. (I think this search function uses the web ws.infospace.com) I also tried to manually detele this by going into tools, manage add-on, and detele the cyberdefender search function but it did not work.
