XPS 13 (9343) sound popping, esp. when streaming

Q: XPS 13 (9343) sound popping, esp. when streaming

Ever since upgrading to Windows 10, the sound on my XPS 13 pops, particularly when video is being streamed (i.e. Netflix, Youtube). I hear intermittent crackling sound that will temporarily stop (for max 1 minute) if the video is reloaded or paused and played again. This noise is not apparent when I plug in my headphones. All of my drivers are up to date. I've turned off enhancements, updated any video streaming software/plugins, and no change.
FYI, I'm having exactly the same problem on an Alienware M15x circa 2010.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello all,
I have had noise cracking/popping on my XPS intermittently for the last few months soon after I updated to Windows 10 Pro. The cracking seems to occur when I'm streaming something (i.e. YouTube, Netflix, Twitch, etc.) whether for one minute or several hours.
I have tried restarting the computer, updating drivers on the Dell website, disabling audio enhancers, disabling add-ons in Firefox. I can't seem to find any solution. It seems like a lot of people are struggling with this. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Opening a new thread since the other is marked as resolved.
Since receiving the laptop on Friday I noticed that audio was not working - to begin with the speaker volume was very quiet, even when on max, and then the audio device would 'disappear' from Windows periodically and audio ceased to function entirely. I had assumed that this was a one off and so rebooted and all seemed well - however the issue has returned and seems to be worse.
Audio tests fail, and there is no sound from any applications - seems to be hardware issue; I removed the Intel SST & Realtek drivers and then reinstalled the driver package from Dell, no change.
Then I rebooted, went into the BIOS, turned off audio, rebooted, turned audio back on from BIOS, booted to Windows and audio was working again. However, following a reboot, the issues returned. And subsequently audio functionality comes back and goes away as it pleases.
I'm quite disappointed to be honest, I had waited a couple of weeks for the laptop and now it's looking like I'm going to need to send it back for repair. Also I've just managed to get everything set up the way I want it and now I'm pretty sure I'm going to be forced to do a factory reset, which I'm adamant is not going to resolve the issue!
Can anyone help me out here?
Have contacted Dell support and am waiting to hear back, just interested to know if there's anything I can try in the meantime.

Hello Adam. I have removed the "verified" from my answer to Zof (he is the person who marked it as the answer, probably because I answered his audio driver question).

Both you and Zof mentioned the BIOS. You could try updating to the latest revision, which was released yesterday. The revision before that was released just a week ago, so it looks like there are a lot of bugs in that model that are being caught. However, under the "Fixes and Enhancements" notes, I don't see any mention of fixing audio in any of the revisions. However it could be fixed but not noted.
Other than that, I repeat my advice to Zof:
"...you should perform a system recovery and return the laptop to the exact state it was in when you took it out the box. Then test the audio immediately before you allow any updates (turn off Microsoft automatic updates before you go online).
If the audio does not work at that point, consider returning the laptop, because the problem is caused either by faulty hardware or a problem created at the factory."
The reason for performing a system recovery is because Dell no longer provides a self contained audio test. The tests available piggy-back on Windows and its drivers, so since they are not removed from the equation the tests are inadequate. A system recovery is the next best test because it fixes Windows and the audio driver, so any problems leftover are due t... Read more

I have the i7 256GB touchscreen and used to get about 6-8 hours battery life but it's declined to about 4 hours after 6 months of use.  I finally contacted Dell and according to their tech, this is "normal wear and tear" and the average life span is only "a year to a year and a half".  He then proceeded to install a battery management software on my system and said that my battery health is good even though the performance has dropped about 50% in less than a year!  I asked to speak to a supervisor and the supervisor said that I am "lucky to be getting 3-4 hours backup battery"... I asked him to tell me where on the Dell website does it say that it should be like that and he in return asked me to tell him where on the website does it say that I should be getting more!  I was so upset by the supervisor that I forgot to mention the annoying buzzing sound that has plagued my laptop since I received it. I just emailed support and hope that they can be more helpful than the tech that I spoke to on the phone.
Has anyone else had a similar issue/experience?

Hi,
I have the XPS13 (9343) laptop for almost a year now.
In the last week i'm suffering a weird issue, in which my speakers suddenly like "change their quality" to a very low one. Whatever sound I play (windows chimes / youtube music) - the sound is distorted and metallic. The even stranger thing is, that the problem consists also when I plug in headphones, so it should be a software issue I suppose.
After restart, the problem is solved, until the next time.

I have latest Realtek drivers and ran the Dell Support checkup few times.
Thanks in advance!

try turning down the master volume in the mixer, adjust the individual devices up a little or just turn the speaker volume up. Sometimes overdriving the master volume will cause pops, etc.

I have an HP dv6000t laptop, XP, the sound card is Conexant HD Audio. For the dv6000t model, the audio jacks (there are two, for two headphones) are at the front of the laptop, below the touchpad facing you.I tried connecting a DELL sound system that i got default with my dell desktop years ago. It comes with a subwoofer that connects (black plug and green plug) to the two audio jacks and you connect two speakers to the subwoofer. When I plugged in the green plug from the subwoofer to the right audio jack, there was a popping sound. I quickly pulled the wire and from there, no audio would play from my laptop's speakers.I can only play sound through headphones, and through the subwoofer to the speakers.I looked at the device manager, checked the "sound, video, and game controls" and it said everything was working properly, updated, and there were no red X's or exlamation points. My laptop speakers can't play system sounds, or any music. When I open the "Volume Control" window, click on advanced, under Tone Controls, there Bass and Treble are greyed out and I cant slide the bar left or right. I used to be able to.Please help. Thanks in advance. I'll try to make some screen shots asap.i made ms paint diagrams and uploaded to imagebeaveri made the above images using ms paint and google images. this is my first time using imagebeaver but hopefully its uploaded correctly.

A:How can I get sound output from sound card when streaming video?

Hello green,

You get sound from your microphone? I don't think I am understanding. Sound should come from your sound card. You plug the speakers into the back of the computer and into the sound card (green jack). The mic receives sound. My mic is USB so it doesn't use any jack other than the USB port, but if you use the sound card, it goes into the purple jack

Do you have the audio driver installed? This should be right: http://support.acer.com/product/defa...x?modelId=2192

Hello,

I'm currently getting some popping and crackling. The issue occurs when I am scrolling through a website like reddit. As I click the scroll bar and slide it down, the sound gets worse the slower I scroll.

I am using two sound cards: Creative Labs XtremeMusic and Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1.

I upgraded my ram to 4 gigs DDR 2 6400 when I purchased Windows 7 and upgraded from my 32 bit XP Media Center Edition. The issue is pretty much resolved on my Creative Labs after the additional RAM, but the AK1, which uses heavier duty drivers, still gives me issues. It pops less when I disable my anti-virus (Avast), but I can't seem to get rid of it entirely. Crucial.com says my ram can't be upgraded beyond 4 gigs. I don't know if this matters, but when I look at my system specs, it says there is 4 gigs installed, but it's only utilizing 3.5.

I've disabled all of the visual effects and run pretty much every tweak I've found out there. The only additional upgrade I've yet to perform is on my video card which is an old ATi Radeon X600.

Will upgrading my video card help at all? Is there anything else to do, or should I just look at upgrading my entire system?

A:Popping Sound

It's probably a capacitor or voltage regulator from the card OR your motherboard. Sometimes there is a high pitch "whine" too. See if you can hear that. Try to distinguish where it's coming from and replace that part. Hopefully it's not the board.

Get in close while it's happening and see if you can tell where it's coming from. It could be something else....this id just a suggestion.

Hope it helps a little, and welcome!

I had a similar problem about a year ago. This is just a stab in the dark, maybe we'll get lucky.

We found that the monitor had sound capability and the volume was set to > 0 we got this annoying popping sound. Spoke to the monitor manufacturer (Philips), and even sent it back and they couldn't fault it. We weren't running sound through the monitor, just having the volume turned up was enough to cause the problem.

When we set the monitor volume to 0 the popping stopped.

If not, sorry to have wasted your time.

Alright, so I've found answers to this all over the internet but none of them seem to work for me so here we go:

I purchased a new pc last month with the following specs: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/HsN2GT6LtZqwt1My6IKmenl .

Whenever I have a media player open, the sound is crisp and clear but the moment I open a second application (net browser/game/etc.) I get a horrible and consistent pop and crackle noise. I've tried different HDMI cords, bitrates, updated all of my drivers and nothing works. I'm pretty much at my wits end. From what I've gathered online, the fault is that the audio and video both share the same HDMI cable. What do you think?

Hi
I've just downloaded the new Nvidia graphics driver 270.61. Before I downloaded this, the sound was perfect. Afterwards, yeah, not so good. I hear popping noises when playing music (and I'm not even doing anything at all on the computer while it plays) and while playing games. My Realtek sound driver is up to date btw... It only pops about twice, then after about 30 seconds it will pop again and so on. When I'm playing a game, any game, no matter how demanding, the game would stutter a bit while the sound pops - as if the computer is loading something - then back to normal again once the popping is gone. The games all run at a decent frame rate. I uninstalled the graphics driver, put on the older one (260.99) and the sound was fine again. I'd really like to have this new graphics driver, without these sound issues. What should I do?

Sorry if I posted this on the wrong topic...
Thanks

A:Sound 'popping'

There many posts on here (and other forums) on the popping, crackling, etc. Video drivers are one potential cause of this and looks like it was yours.

I had a gaming problem, not sound, that was related to video card drivers. I had to wait for 3 revisions before the problem I had was corrected. You may have to do the same thing.

One thing you can try is to uninstall the video in the Device Manager, also uninstall the drivers and reboot. If you are on line, Windows should get the latest video card drivers and install it. Sometimes the uninstall and Windows reinstall will put the device on a different shared IRQ and fix flakey problems.

First off welcome to SF. Second with sounds I would double check all your connections. Most often this is the pin making poor contact or even the beginning of a wire breaking down maybe from a bend or crimp. Then I would uninstall and reinstall the most current audio drivers and as well go to the mono mfgrs. site to check for other driver updates and lastly read to see if any bios updates deal with sound issues.

I've downloaded the XP audio and video codecs and reinstalled them - no help. I don't have a problem with 3GP video files or MP3 files or YouTube files and the video looks fine on the problem files.

When I use Ulead Movie Factory and burn the files to a DVD they play fine on my TV DVD player so it's just a problem with sound on the PC. Any tips would be appreciated.

Recently I started noticing popping sounds at multiple frequencies (mostly higher frequencies) when playing audio. I don't know what caused it, but this is what I already tried:
Using a different audio port.Updating drivers.Updating BIOS.Disabled all unused sound ports.Installed windows again.Using different headset (regular in-ear headphones and razer kraken pro).Trying to get my DPC latency as low as possible.Bought a new sound card, but I still have the popping sound.Disconnecting keyboard and mouse to see if there was a driver conflict.

What I have already tried after creating this thread:

Disabled built-in soundcard.

I installed the razer sound drivers and now it masks the popping a little bit.

Is there anything else I can try?

I have now got a new graphics card to see if the GPU causes it, but I can't replace it until tomorrow.

Could it be the motherboard (3 year old)?

A:Sound popping Windows 8.1 Pro

Popping, crackling, dropouts, etc. can have many causes. Sound Drivers, Video Drivers, Wi-Fi, power supply are just some potential causes.

Does this happen only with headsets? Do you get this with PC speakers?

As you have a separate sound card, disable the built in sound in the BIOS so there are no conflicts.

Download and run the Resplendence Latency Mon as it may help in troubleshooting. Do not use the DPC Latency Checker as it is not Windows 8/8.1 compatible and will give a false reading.

I am just wondering what is causing it, its quite nerve wrecking lol. Like does it have anything to do with the sound card?.. The computer is a Toshiba Laptop

I've noticed that i get a popping sound in certain games like World of Warcraft. I've tried updating my drivers but windows tells me there are no better drivers for audio. I've also tried downloading the new direct x. No dice. In addition, a couple things will reboot my computer on exit. Windows tells me it's a device drive error. Any help will be very appreciated.

About a week ago, the SOUND dialog box has been popping up on my desktop at intermitten times. (This is the same box that would open if you went to the Control Panel and clicked on SOUND.) We have had SKYPE on our computer for a couple months and never had a problem. I have no idea if this has anything to do with the pop up, but just thought I'd mention it. Any ideas on how to STOP this annoying pop up?

Hi -

Go to audio device manufacturer's support site and obtain updated audio drivers.

All right, so my sound is popping at loud frequencies. For example, if I click on my volume adjuster to hear the different sample levels, little pops and crackles can be heard. I was starting to notice some crackling when I got the Logitech g35. Thinking the g35 was faulty, I got a refund and a got a sound card (Xonar DX) and a non-usb headset (MMX 300). I first noticed the crackles on the system sounds at this moment. So I tried all kind of different drivers for the xonar. But to no avail, the problem still occurred on headphones and speakers. Then I removed my graphic card, the soundcard, all kinds of usb ports, and the sound popping is still happening on the on-board sound which I had never noticed until the g35. So, thinking maybe I had messed some windows file, I reinstalled windows 8 and reset the BIOS. The crackling is still there. I also tried using one of each ram sticks.

This is really frustrating! I am a competitive COD player and the season has already started. Please help me

A:Sound Popping/Crackling

Popping and crackling has been an issue with some. Wi-Fi is one known cause. Old drivers are another, for both the sound and video. Some system monitor and configuration programs can also cause this. The is no "one fix", from what I've seen - on the Windows 7 forum and the Dell users forum. Its not as prevalent as it was but there are still occasional reports of problems.

Sadly, the DPC Latency Checker is not valid for Windows 8 so that very useful tool for trying to track the problem down, can't be used.

I was wondering if there is a way to increase the sound output on a streaming video. Particulary from VeeHD.com and it is a flash player.

Please fill out the My System Specs. We are just shooting in the dark without that.

Also, to clarify, are you trying to record straming audio from the internet or are you trying to send audio to the internet?

Hey, after a leap of faith I finally made the shift to vista. But for some reason, I have sound when I play a local video/music file, but a video, on say youtube/stage 6, will have no sound output. The same problem is happening on both firefox and opera, and both of them have played both sound and video at one point or another.
I have tried:
1) Reinstalled sound card driver, then found and updated version and tried that as well.
2) Reinstalled flash on more than one occasion.
3) Tried the old fix with CCleaner's Adobe Flash scan.

Hello to everyone.

Currently I am trying to use WMP 12 to stream video files from my PC to my PS3. On a minimal install of windows 7 x64, I have ffdshow x86 and x64, as well *** haali x86 and x64, so I am able to stream mkv video files.

The PS3 is only receiving the video from the mkv files, the audio is not being streamed. I have tried streaming avi files, and both video and audio do stream. As well, the mkv files play with video and audio on the pc without any additional codecs.

Looking for any help on this issue, as I am stumped beyond belief. Thanks in advanced to all

A:[Help] no sound on any streaming media

I had to get the vox codecs for windows media player before it would play some video streams. You can find it on a google search. It drove me crazy til I figured out how to fix it. Good luck.
