Lenovo Yoga 920 hard crashes unpredictably

Q: Lenovo Yoga 920 hard crashes unpredictably

Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, it was found unresponsive. All of the same crash behavior as before was present.Thursday-Monday - No issuesMonday, August 12th - Computer was plugged in and on, and was being used, when it crashed again. At this time I decided to try a full re-install of Windows.Installation completed and while Windows set up was running, it crashed again. At this time I left the machine to run Memtest overnight and it found 0 errors in RAM.Tuesday, August 12th (Today) - Computer is running fine again.I completed setting up my new Windows installation and ran Lenovo Bridge and Lenovo Diagnostics Windows again.I ran Prime95 and watched the temperature and it never reached a sustained temperature above 76c.I am at an utter loss to what to try next. The computer is working fine now, but since I haven't identified the issue, and since going days without issue was how it worked in the past, I have no confidence that the computer is reliable this time. I still have a Thinkpad I've been using for 8 years and I've always been very happy with Lenovo products, but to have this happen to me within 2 weeks of the expiration of my 1-year warranty, is disheartening, to say the least. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I know there are several varoius posts regarding the USB C thunderbolt connector but I have not fould one about intermittent un predictable performance. I am using a Dell docking station that has a USB C connector WD15. Sometimes the display will function other times it will not. I have to turn the cable upside down and re-insert into the computer. It would seem to me that the conenction should be the same regardless of orientation. Most of the time I have to choose between charging and second display. It seems to vary based on the orientation of the connector. However this does not seem predictable. Also it seems to be equally unpredictable regadless of the USB port selected. I have updated drivers via Lonovo and I am up to date in Windows. How can I get the display port and charger to work at the same time. The mouse and headset do not seem to be affected. Thank you

I posted this in another user's thread but am starting a new thread just in case any Lenovo tech support see this. My Lenovo Yoga 920 also hard crashes unpredictably, sometimes 3-4 times every day. It will sometimes go a day or two without crashing but then will crash frequently at intermittent times. Like the previous poster, I have tried running the Lenovo diagnostics and found nothing, all my drivers are up to date, and the system records no failures at all before each crash. If anyone has found a solution to this issue, PLEASE post something. It also started happening to my computer a little after the 1 year warranty was up and I absolutely cannot afford a new computer. It is very disappointing and stressful to think this investment is almost worthless.

I've been having trouble with the fingerprint sensor on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga laptop (type 20FR) for the last week. It is now completely unresponsive after working just fine for months. In device manager it says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." I've tried disabling/enabling the device form device manager, uninstalling/re-installing the drivers, and wiping stored fingerprints from the BIOS settings. After wiping the fingerprints from BIOS settings and re-programming the fingerprint sensor from the Windows Hello settings menu, it worked for a day, but then the issue with the finger print sensor crashing returned. What do I do?

I just bought the yoga book mostly for games and YouTube.  One of the main games I got it for was Pokemon go.  When I got it, the game ran fine. After updating it to Android 7.1.1 the game will not load. It crashes and says the game has stopped working. From what I'm reading online it has to deal with the security patch from August 2017. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this without a factory reset?

I had the an issue but with Yoga 530. First of all, the system simply hanging when I try to put it to sleep or shut down. I hunted down the cause and it seems the new audio driver causing it. I rolled back the audio driver to from and the system immediately started to work as desired. I used Lenovo Diagnostics Tool and checked Windows' inbuilt reliability monitor for more details and this helped me to track down what caused the problem. Unfortunately, Vantage software forced to update this driver so I had to switch off this function.

My Yoga 11s laptop almost always crashes when I plug in my external Wesstern Didigital My Passport 500 GB hard drive. As soon as I plug it in, screen goes dark. It sometimes is difficult to power it back on, sometimes takes several minutes of pressing the power button. Once I reboot it, with the external drive already plugged in it's fine. But is very annoying to deal with.  I've also had issues with the Yoga not waking from sleep mode some times, where I have to hard power it down and reboot, maybe related? Any one else see this problem?

Hi Everyone, I'm at my wits end and was hoping someone might be able to help me understand what exactly I need to do, purchase to bring my laptop back to life. Long story short, I have had this for just over 2 years, no more warranty and the hard drive I believe is going out/has gone out. It all started with a failed windows 10 upgrade, kept looping, finally I blew away I guess everything on it. Now when I am trying to re-instal windows 8.1 it tells me that it cannot because the hard disk may fail soon. I can get mostly through the windows setup but it always ends up failing. My question is, can someone help me identify what exactly needs to be replaced? I am fairly tech savy good at following directions and installing things by myself. (garbage disposals, haha). What I am not good at is trying to track down what hard drive to buy would be? I hate to bring it to best buy as its $200 just for a diagnosis and then whatever to fix it on top of that.  Can anyone offer insight and help me become enlightened? Thanks so much, L

Today I experienced 4 times a 'hard shut down' of my Yoga laptop when browsing Chrome.- the screen went black within 1 minute after launching google chrome and browsing chrome --> the laptop then 'died' in without any notifications or error. I did not ever experience this before. I was hoping that Chrome was the issue, so I de-installed it. Unfortunately that was not it ... Now the same happens when I pull out the 'power connection', the laptop then shuts down hard, and will not come alive anymore, I can only turn it on when the power is plugged.- this now looks like a broken battery issue, however with the experience of the multiple 'hard shut downs' on the same day (with power plugged) I am not that sure anymore... Is there anyone that has an idea what could be the issue? many thanks, Jeroen

Hello, Yesterday I bought a new lenovo yoga 720 (15) along when lenovo active pen 2. The laptop is fantastic, but the pen experience is not great. It is not writing smoothly. I had to put some pressure to write on the screen. At first I thought the pen is faulty, however I noticed that at some parts of the screen the pen is able to write so smoothly, whereas in other parts, the pen is facing friction. I don't know what to make of it. I cleaned the screen, changed the nibs, tested on different apps (one note, xodo) but it is showing the same behavior. To be specific, the left bottom and right bottom of the screens are smooth to write on whereas the top area is causing friction.  Any solutions to resolve this?  Thank you

Hey Guys,Im trying to get a laptop working for my brother. He has a Yoga 500-14IBD. The laptop works perfectly fine with the current hard drive running windows 10.He has been sent out a new hard drive which has been preloaded with windows 10 but adapted with specialised software (which shouldn't be too important for the issue).I installed the new hard drive into the Laptop and it won't boot past the Windows Boot Manager. The laptop does recognise the Hard drive and see's it is connected but wont boot into it. Where it gets weird is that I tried this hard drive in my other Lenovo T420 Laptop and it boots into the hard drive no problems. This rules out hard ware issues. Is there something which needs to be adjusted in the BIOS to allow the Yoga to boot up into this hard drive? I have tried switching from UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode but this didnt make any real difference. There was an error showing in Legacy mode regarding PXE-E61 Media Test Failure Error but this occurred when the laptop worked in my T420 so it shouldnt be related.  I have tested another Windows 10 installation Hard drive on the Yoga (the one from my T420) and it worked. Just a note the hard drive that isnt working is not and SSD but the ones which are working are SSD'sAny advice would be appreciated

Hi all, I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 300-11IBR with the 32gb internal hard drive. I thought it would suit my purpose well as I only want to use it to run software to check error codes on my car (not much hard drive capacity required). I'm really disappointed though as I thought it would be super-fast to boot and use with 32gb SSD that only runs the operating software; how wrong I was... Long story short I?m trying to improve the performance and would like to install a 64gb SSD; I have remove the back and found the connector (SATA_CONN1) but it has no cable connector. Does this mean the motherboard will not support a SATA drive or does it mean I need a connector soldered on (this looks very tricky as the pins are so close together). See attached photos of the inside of my notebook and the connector cable I intended to purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated; if I don?t get this resolved the notebook will be going in the bin and I?ve wasted a reasonable amount of money. Final resort is to down grade from windows 10 to windows 7 and free up some disk space. I?d like to do this anyway but struggled for 6 hours already to undertake this task; I keep receiving an Error Code: 0x6 Thanks, Richard

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could help me with an issue I'm having with my Lenovo Yoga 730-15IKB. Unfortunately, my 1 year warrant expired one and a half months ago. My trackpad was working completely fine. All of a sudden, it stopped clicking properly. Once in a while, clicking might work. You can hear the trackpad click. When I left click, it might sometimes work. When I right click, it almost never works. If I soft tap the left side, it usually clicks. When I soft tap the right side, it never really clicks. I'm not sure what is causing this problem, so I'm not sure what to do aside from using an external mouse. I used to have a Lenovo Thinkpad, and I never experienced this issue before. This Yoga is 1 year and 1 month old, and it's already having problems. I've never dropped it, moved it while on, or spilled anything on it, so I'm not sure why it's experiencing problems. Would anyone be able to assist me? Thank you in advance!

Two ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 TabletPCs will successfully boot into Windows 10 just fine from a hard poweroff.  But once in windows, if i choose Restart, it will hang at the "LENOVO" BIOS  level boot up logo with "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter".   Stuck at Lenovo BOOT BIOS initialization screen, right before handoff to the Operating System. "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" At this point, pressing ENTER does not work.CTRL-ALT+DEL causes the screen to change shade for a moment, but effectively does nothing.Changing the UEFI settings to diagnostics results in black screen.Holding the power switch to force a poweroff, waiting a few moments, and then powering on results in a successful windows startup.  DevMGMT.msc does NOT see bluetooth and there is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" entry under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".  I have run all automatic updates via "Lenovo Vantage" and the manual TPM update.   I can boot into the firmware setup and have had it revert to factory defaults and reverted to factory defaults for all security settings.   I even tried the Win10 repair startup problems, but it says it cannot fix this.

A:ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 does not Restart, requires hard power off. Stuck at Lenovo boot logo.

It looks to me like you have a faulty hardware issue or a serious driver issue. Try the Lenovo recovery to put the device back to the factory windows install. If that fails, I would think you have a hardware issue.

The music always plays fine from the speakers.
The music always plays fine from headphones when I'm using a USB DAC.
The music always played fine in Windows 8.1 before this through headphones..
The music always plays fine in Linux, my dual boot along side Windows 10.

My headphones for sure work as all my other devices and OSes are fine with it.
My hardware is fine as everything work(s/ed) fine for Linux and Windows 8.1.
My computer always recognizes the headphones when I plug them in, but won't always play audio through them.

Restarting the computer does not always fix the issue, but rebooting into Linux then back into Windows 10 always fixes the issue.

I have tried 3 different sets of audio drivers; Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Generic Drivers for my device (Eurocom M4). The problem persists in all of them.

I have updated my BIOS to a Windows 10 supported one my manufacturer provided. It didn't help.

It isn't malware for sure as this has been happening since the OS was newly installed.

It persists with all headphones, not just one pair.

Anyone have any possible idea how to fix this issue? I've tried everything I could.

Is there anything I can do to get my Windows clock back on track? It will read correctly for many weeks on end -- or even longer -- but then it will start giving the wrong time. The wrong time may be minutes or hours off.

This unexpected tab openening keeps occurring at random times, for www.software-updater.com  from Air Software, with documentation in the tab saying the software to download is from Google Chrome.    This is very suspicious to me.  How do I stop this unexpected tab from opening?  Is this something genuine from google chrome?  The tab will not close if I click on the x at the right side of the tab label; I need to use Task Manager to stop Google Chrome.

Something you downloaded and installed recently contained adware....a program or browser add-on.
Use the programs below to find and remove the adware. Use all of them.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.

I have tried a number of search terms here, but don't find this reported anywhere-- so here goes nothing:

The machine: HP Pavillion dv8000 (portable), x86, 512M RAM
OS: WIN XP Pro v.5.1.2600 SP2, build 2600

The issue:

I fire up the machine and go about my business. The system works with my chosen keystroke repeat rate (very high) which correctly works after the machine booted. Fine.

But at SOME point-- and it seems to have something to do with simultaneously having PhotoShop, Firefox, Wordpad and the imagining software from my Fuji digital camera open at the same time as Norton is running a "live update"-- all of a sudden the keystoke repeat rate "sets itself" to "snail's pace." I go to the control panel > keyboard and find that the slider control for the keystoke repeat rate is now all the way over to the left (super slow). I reset it to a fast rate, apply, and the system works normally again.... maybe for weeks, maybe for a few minutes.

I am yet to actually reproduce the conditions that cause this "quirk."

If I reboot the machine while the keystroke repeat rate is "slow" like this, the system comes back up with my "fast" preset.

I doubt this is a "security" issue... but it's certainly ANNOYING, when it happens.

Is there legitimate software that examines such things as keystroke rates, and "makes the determination" that it needs to be reset, in order for the software... Read more

Like stated in the description. the Lenovo Yoga Control Service require 3% out of the CPU, all the time. and the only thing the service does is checking the orientation of the screen, and disable keyboard and mouse when flipped. This is absurd, especially since it drains battery constantly. I hope that this will be fixed eventually, until that time, I will turn the service off and use the computer like a regular laptop.
