Preferred Solution: Finding deleted history

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I'm new to this site. I mainly joined to take a look round the web. dev. section.

Anyway, I've wandered into this area and so, in the spirit of sharing info, I though you may be interested in this post that explains why deleting your browser history (or using private browsing) will not stop people seeing your browsing history.

It really surprised me when I read through it earlier!!

Hope this is useful

Hi everyone,
Is there another way to get back your history once it has been deleted? If not is there some other way you can tell where the kids have been besides looking in history? I want to say that I was able to do it one time, but I was mostly just messing around and can't remember all what I did.

Thanks,

In the past I checked the history of websites visited by using the history button on the top bar of the browser. Now, the person I'm checking on, goes into the History and deletes the information before I can check. I know there is a way to see all the sites visited but I'm not sure how.

Please help this is very important. I can't install a spyware to track this person and have to rely on the computer itself to give away the info.

Thanks so much.

You could check the Temporary Internet Files in the Windows folder. Be sure that Internet Explorer is set not to empty TIF when it closes. You can check that at Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Empty TIF Files When Browser is Closed (9th from bottom).

I am desperate to find my computers history going back to May-June of this year. To make it short and sweet, I was given a 100 dollar e-gift card to Best Buy that I am trying to use now. I had it in my email but accidentally deleted it and hotmail will not go back that far to recover it, so that is out. I printed it too btw but the printer ink was too low hince no security numbers printed although the bar code did. So basically I tried at Best Buy today but they can't do anything unless they have the 4 security numbers which means my 100 dollar gift card is useless right now. My question is can someone please help me to go back in my computers history so I can find the link again? I tried system restore but like the email history it won't go back that far. UGH I don't want to lose it and it's appearing that I just might. Thank You.

Index.dat Suite might give you what you need. Your history is never completely deleted. The program can trace it back pretty far! However, the program isn't easy to use or understand. There are a lot of locations where the history can be stored.

My wife and I believe that our babysitter may have watched a less-than-approved DVD while here. I'm not sure which program she would have used. we have HP MediaSmart DVD and Windows Media Player 12 are the two main ones. I don't she is crafty enough to watch it in a movie editing program...

Is there a way in the registry or something to find a history of which DVDs have been played and when?

I have looked through the AppData folder in the user accounts, but didn't see anything helpful. It has to be somewhere because the programs remember where you left off on each DVD and start playing from where you stopped, even if it was months ago...

I appreciate any help

A:Finding DVD History/Cache

You would need to locate the wmdb files at C: \Users\(Your profile name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player and find an extractor that will convert them into text, there are a few out there but you may have to pay. That is all I can give you as this is not the kind of issue we usually deal with and even after converting the files into a readable format there is no guarantee it is going to tell you what you want to know. You may have to do a bit of Googling to find out where the MediaSmart software keeps its cache.

Hi all,

I know this may not be the right place to place a request of this sort but a have a little question. You see, I'm a huge fan of the Short Circuit movies and I got really excited when I read this . Now since the article only includes part of the script, I, naturally, wanted to read the whole script. I'm smart enough to know that the site has since disappeared (Fall of '96 - I was only three!). I tried using the Wayback machine but even back then they didn't have the whole script OR a link to the whole script. I need to search all the sites from around that time to find it. Anyone know how to do that or otherwise have any idea on where to start looking?

Hi guys,

Im wondering if you could help, i cant seem to get my head around it.

Basically i was browsing the internet, visited a site (as much as only half the page managed to load due to lag of some sort?) and then realised i had something to do so would visit the site later on in the day.

Later in the day i returned briefely to check an ebay bid and as you do you select the drop down menu to select the site. I noticed my was listed in the address bar which reminded me to check it when i was less busy.

Anyway, i returned later on to visit the site, went to select via the drop down menu and the site was not listed? Every other site (as i can recall best to) was listed minus the one id viewed.

When i clicked the history button, the site still was nowhere to be found, almost as if i had never visited it?

Trying to trace back my steps i cant remember whether i had opened new browser windows or not which may of explained why i hadnt seen the address on the drop down list but still doesnt explain why it vanished from my history?

Ive tried to reinact it again and it seems to stay in my history now, even when i type the address in, his enter and then the stop button, to see if the reason the page didnt register was because it timed out or was due to lag. Seemed to add to the history as soon as i hit enter however.

An explanation would appreciated very much!

Thanks. :)

A:Self deleted history?

In IE go to tools/internet options, general tab.............at the bottom where it says "days to keep history" what setting do you have? Could this have anything to do with it?

Could someone have right clicked and deleted it from the history for some reason?

Had you run a program such as "one button check up" from Norton or Ad-aware, these both could have lead to the deletion of the history of this site, even leaving others intact depending on the programs findings.

Hope some of this helps, perhaps someone else could shed more light :S

There are ways to do this, but it depends on how expert he is at deleting the history.
Here's a google search with a lot of good results: http://www.google.com/search?q=recov...ient=firefox-a

I'd suggest that you password protect your computer so that your son can only get on when you let him. If he doesn't follow your rules (such as not deleting the history), then he doesn't get on the computer.

I'll assume you're using Internet Explorer.
Search you HDD for "index.dat" files, before searching, you'll need to go to advanced options and search hidden/system folders.
You'll aslo need a special proram to view the file:

I need to recover deleted IE history and have scoured all different sources for recovery and im starting to doubt whether or not it is possible.

What I know wont work:

System Restore- The history was deleted between restore points, and the restore points on either side of it being deleted dont have the relevant history

What I've tried:

Index.dat readers. This is what I'm confused about, everywhere I go say this file holds all IE history unless its been altered, but from everything I've actually tried it seems all the index files I can find just hold information I can pretty readily access already.

So I'm willing to try any suggestions, and also if anyone has a little more info on index.dat that would change what I've found out myself it would also be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know how I would go about checking internet history if it has been deleted from view/history menu, recycle bin and also temp files? Is it stored anywhere else on the hard drive?

Any (easy to follow) advice that doesnt involve downloading any software would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

A:How do I find deleted history?

Nope, it is stored in one location and when you clear it, it rewrites the index.dat file for the folders when you restart your computer and if you open your browser, the new stuff is stored where the old stuff was thus permanently overwriting it so that it is all gone.

Now if you have a firewall it may have a log of sites visited if it was configured to log such activity.
What firewall do you have? Do you have logging enabled?

My kid was on the internet and when I walked in he was deleting the history. I want to see the websited he was on. can I get the history back?

A:is there a way to undo deleted history?

1. The easy and quick way to restore file and activity History is the System Restore feature. Since much history is saved into the Windows Registry, restoring it to a previous state will restore file and program History.

* Choose a date you would like the computer reverted to (see warnings.)
* Enjoy restored History.
2. But the story doesn't stop here! Perhaps System Restore was disabled by a user, or it is inappropriate to use it (see warnings). Well, let's try another tactic. There are lesser known log files that Windows keeps, which are independent of both the Registry and individual Program logs. They are called "index.dat" files. Use the Windows Search Tool to find all occurrences of "index.dat" on your C: drive.

* On XP, click Start, and Search, then For Files & Folders, and All Files & Folders, now enter "index.dat" in the Filename field. Before searching:

o Limit the search to C: drive using the Look In drop-down.
o Check the following options using the More Advanced Options line:
1. Search System Files
2. Search Hidden Files & Folders
3. Search Subfolders
o Click printscreen.
o Be amazed at how many "index.dat" files there are.
o Minimize the Search Results window.
* You need a tool to read the index.dat files. The... Read more

Hello Pinkiestar,

I'm not sure you will be able to view the browsing history since it was deleted, but they are storeed at the hidden C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder. You might be able to use the free program Recuva to restore the files at that location to see where he was at though.

You might keep him on a Standard account instead and setup Parental Controls on it, then enable website filtering to help block what he can access on the internet.

Hope this helps,

A:Recover deleted history

Chances are that you can't. But what exactly do you want to recover? Files, a list of files, or what?

Ccleaner removes many things that can be useful for recoveries. Backup files, though useless if unused, of course, are created for a reason. Ccleaner should be used sparingly, if at all, and never use the registry part.

Is there any free software online that is able to retrieve emails permanently deleted from an AOL account about 3 weeks ago? The email was also printed out that day in case if that helps in locating the lost email in some random sector of the hard drive.
Thanks!

A:Finding deleted emails

If the email was stored on the AOL server, and not downloaded in Outlook or Outlook express, you have zero chance of retrival, as it is stored on a server that you have no control over and would certainly be already written over.

If it did create a temporary spool file in memory while printing out, that will have been immediately deleted when the print operation finished.

If you actually downloaded it in Outlook or similar, then deleted it there is every liklihood it is in your email delected folder. But that is speculation as we don't know how it was accessed.

Hi, I was just wondering if there is a command prompt or anything else you can do to find out when a file was deleted.

I lost a bunch of downloaded files on the 24 of november this year and I was not on the computer that day, I did however have the computer with me and I believe someone I know deleted these files purposely.

I would obviously like to recover but that is not a big deal, however I am much more interested in finding out if the files were deleted on this day or when they were deleted.

If there is a log of when files deleted or something I can do to find out it would be of great help.

Thanks in advance.

A:Finding when a file was deleted

If they are still in the recycle bin then they should have a date of deletion marked .. you should be able to right click and select the column if it's not shown.

If the files have been deleted from the recycle bin then there are some pieces of software that can recover those files .. sometimes but not always the recovery software will notify you of the date and time deleted. It really depends upon the recovery software being used

Hello again,

No matter which undelete programme I try, not one of them will ever find a deleted file.

I copy a file to a directory on C: or D:, delete it and then empty the Recycle Bin. Whatever application I care to use, the file, which is very unlikely to have been overwritten, can not be found. No trace of it ever.

The undelete applications are on drive Z: so that running the undeleter should have no effect on drive C: or D: where the deletion has been done.

Is there something wrong with my discs, or is it the security app ? It worked in XP !

I have another computer with XP Pro SP3 also and it doesn't behave in that manner at all.

I have tried the solution HERE to no avail.

I have Tweak UI and the option Clear document history on exit in the Explorer section is unchecked.

I'm also not running any Cache Cleaner of any sort.

Thanks for your input.

Hi, I recently deleted some files on my computer by accident, without seeing which ones they were. All I need to know is how I can view a log or history of the files I deleted today. Is there a way to see a history of the recycle bin (it was emptied)?
I don't need to recover them, and I don't need any undelete programs (they didn't work anyways). All I need to do is view the filenames to see what they were.

A:view history of deleted files

There is no "history" for the Recycle Bin. The only history you get is to look at the files before you empty the Recycle Bin.

If you have already "emptied" the Recycle Bin, your only recourse is one of many file recovery programs. There is no native "Undelete" in XP.
