Wireless printer no longer works in WinXP (but does in Linux)

Q: Wireless printer no longer works in WinXP (but does in Linux)

My Brother MFC 640CW printer used to work when I logged into Windows XP but now it only works when I log into Linux, how can I make it work again in Windows?

I am convinced the problem is with the printer configuration in Windows but I cannot work it out. I am sure the network and printer are configured correctly because I can both print and access the internet under Linux. And under windows I can use the internet and even ping the printer’s dynamically assigned IP address (allocated: but the printer does not work. It would not work even when I turned off my firewall (ZoneAlarm) so I don’t think that is the problem.

I am not sure if it means anything but when I go into the printer configuration under Windows the Port the printer is set to use is something link “dhcpp0”. Could the problem be caused by a mismatch between this name and the actual IP address?

Here’s some background:

I recently purchased a wireless Brother MFC 640CW printer/scanner/fax and connected it to my existing (DHCP) wireless network. The network consists of a PC laptop and wireless router. The IP address of the router is with DHCP addresses starting at (the laptop usually gets assigned this address).

I installed the Brother MFC on the existing network using Windows XP Home and managed to successfully use all print/scan/fax functions. I then decided to give Linux a go and installed the latest Ubuntu version on my laptop (dual booting with WinXP). I had never used Linux (or Unix) before but eventually managed to install all the necessary drivers.

Now when I boot into Windows the Brother MFC does not work (says not connected). When I boot into Linux the Brother MFC works perfectly, although I have not yet worked out how to run the fax software.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have been living with this issue for a couple of months and wish to now resolve issue with your help.

HP OfficeJet 4630 wireless printer no longer prints with my Dell D531 Desktop computer via WLAN, however works with all other WLAN connected devices, e.g., cellphones, netbook, laptop, and tablets. The print spooler indicates print finishes ok but nothing actually prints to
Dell desktop..

What I have done to fix issue without success:
1) Uninstalled/re-installed wifi printer several times on Desktop;
2) Reconnected HP printer to WLAN couple of times;
3) Properties for both desktop and printer show the same internet address;
4) Tried using MS Fixit printer trouble/diagnostic tools with no success (doesn't find issue); and
5) Read through this and other forums with no help so far.

First i have a optical wheel mouse 1.1a by microsoft. The other night the light went out and it simply stopped working. I thought the mouse itself had shorted out. I plugged it into my laptop and it recognized it instantly and it worked fine. That laptop runs winxp with sp2 as well (same as my desktop it failed on). I tried it on an old win98 laptop i had and it even worked there as well, no problems. I tried it again on my desktop again and nothing happens. I thought "oh great my usb ports went out!" I plugged in my jumpdrive, worked fine.. hrm usb ports work, mouse works on other computer, but not this one? I have a total of 4 mice sitting infront of me (3 ps/2 and 1 usb) one of the ps/2 will not work on this machine either, but works on the laptop. I have no idea what the problem is. I even tried a USB to PS/2 converter on the optical mouse and still nothing. Any ideas what might be happening?

Also i just tried my little wireless mouse i use on my laptop. The reciever is a usb adapter and it works fine in the desktop. Im so stumped.

A:Mouse no longer works under WinXP

Yes well it has stumped me to as you have pritty much trouble shot your own problem! the only other suggestion is to uninstall->reboot-.reinstall driver software for the microsoft mouse as i noticed you have not.

Even though it boots on other p.c (which is good to pinpoint the issue) it shows us that this P.c. driver is suspect as all hardware has been accounted for. download the latest driver if you want from;

I bought a copy of windows xp home retail back in 2005. Until now I have never had issues installing. However MAGICALLY this time its all belly up for no apparent reason.

My original install disk has been messed up for some time. However I have always been able to create a copy disk of it without issues that worked perfectly. Now suddenly no matter what I do I get errors when trying to install. I am using an old copy that I had made a few years ago -> ERRORS. I made 5 more copies today from both the original disk and the copy -> ERRORS!

I can do everything from within the setup utility, partition, format and setup for installation. But as soon as it reboots and begins to install ERRORS!

The messed up thing is that I just installed a fresh copy on my SATA hard drive last week WITHOUT ERRRORS! Now magically out of the blue I am trying to install a fresh copy on my IDE drive so I have 2 bootable drives and suddenly my disks are F***d up.

Is there anything I can do here? I still have my CD-Key and everything, just need to get a good of my disks. Maybe there is a program that can make a good copy out of the messed up ones.

A:Winxp Home Disk no longer works!

It may not be the XP CD.

What is the make and model of the computer?
How are the hard drives being "seen" in the BIOS?

Have you disconnected the sata drive and tried installing XP with just the IDE drive?
Is the IDE drive set to Master?

When the print spooler is turned on I get a message that says the printer queue is full. (The printer queue is empty.)

If I try the printer without the printer spool on i.e. print directly to the printer, I get a message that says "Unable to create a print job."

This printer was working with Win 10 until recently. The scan function works as it should. So the computer does see and interacts with the printer through the usb port.

Something must have changed in the latest Windows 10 release to gum up the works.

I took my printer with me when I moved, so it may have broken because of it. Before the move, it worked perfectly. Normally, it makes some humming warm-up noises after it's turned on, and now that sound starts but stops abruptly after a second. The red light is on and not blinking. I can't print a demo page either. Paper and toner is in properly, and I've tried unplugging and plugging everything. Can anyone help?!

A:Solved: Samsung ML 2510 Printer no longer works

Remove the toner cartridge and shake it side to side to even out the toner, re insert it and see if it will play nice now.

If it has a paper tray, be sure it is inserted properly.

I've got an IBM ThinkPad 600X and I was connected wirelessly to the internet at a WIFI location when I discovered that I couldn't send an email from my ISP's Webmail site. After a google search, I discovered that I needed to upgrade Internet Explorer 6.0 with SP1. So I began with Windows Update and chose the proper upgrade. In the middle of the download, Windows Update stopped and gave me an error message with something about proxy server settings. It wouldn't let me continue the upgrade and now I can't access the internet anywhere. Windows Update placed a "Resume Windows Update Installation" file on my desktop, but when I click on it, it fails to continue because it is unable to find sites to download the update due to proxy server settings. I've checked all my network settings and my wireless is working fine, but when I open IE, it gives me the usual "The page cannot be displayed" and nothing I've tried works. This computer has no other access to the Internet, but wireless (there's no NIC port), so I'm having to research with my desktop. Can anyone help? Please?

Last week the wireless connection on my PC upstairs quit working. I have 2 PCs and 2 PS3s. One PC(my main one) and PS3 are downstairs in my "gaming room" with a wired connection to my router(Linksys WRT54GL). My other PC(connected with a linksys ethernet bridge in bedroom, used just for email really) and other PS3(in living room) had wireless connections.
Everything was perfectly fine for years, then last week the PC in my bedroom no longer would connect. At first I thought that the bridge went out due to it's age and I bought a usb wireless adaptor. That did not solve the problem. After investigating further with my limited knowledge I saw that the IP address assigned wasn't valid for internet use( or something to that effect). I manually changed to IP to one that would be in range( and it did not help.
The lights on the bridge seem correct(power, lan and wlan). I took the PC downstairs and it is able to connect with a wired connection. When I run ipconfig with a wired connection everything looks fine, but when I try with the bridge or adapter the IP is invalid. I tried to ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew but I get an error when trying to renew. I even ran a program called "Winsockxpfix" and it did not solve the problem either. I disabled the firewall and it did not solve the issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, everyone, I just joined and would like some help, please. I didn't find a thread specific to my case (maybe there's one and I didn't see, though). I have a 6 year old Compaq Presario F730US running Vista Home Premium and it has been working fine all these years; yesterday, while online the blue light indicating wireless ON became amber suddenly and I can no longer connect except wired. The wireless adapter is not showing on Device Manager or anywhere else and HP Wireless Assistant won't open. Things I've already tried:
-Update/uninstall/reinstall driver
-Remove/reinstall hardware
-System Restore to at least a week prior
And some other tips from some tech sites around. Of course, nothing worked.

In the process of renovating a VERY old Dell Inspiron 2650 to give to disadvantaged kids, I tried using the USB receiver in that laptop. Didn't work, so I used a wired mouse instead. The receiver had been plugged into my Win 7 Toshiba laptop, but when I re-inserted the receiver back into that laptop, the mouse doesn't work. I've tried removing both the receiver and the battery in the mouse, per some advice I read on the Web, but that did nothing. Have also tried downloading the driver. Regardless, when I plug the receiver into a USB port on the laptop, it "beeps" indicating that it recognizes the receiver. . . but it still doesn't work.

If I plug the receiver into my Win 7 desktop, the mouse works.

I just noticed that this hotkey combination has ceased working .  I don't use it that often, so I'm not sure how long this has been the case.  Other Fn/hotkeys are still functioning properly.  My W530 is running Windows 7 SP1 64bit, and both the Lenovo and the Windows Updates are current. I did search out the following post:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/Hotkey-f9-wireless-radio-control-don-t-wo...but I'm not sure it applies to my case.  In particular, I don't want to re-install the "Lenovo Communications Utility" because I use the Windows function for connecting to Wi-Fi, and I recall that one of the related Lenovo overlays screwed that up to my detriment in the past.  (Generally I stay away from most of the Lenovo bloatware, but some, like the Fn/F5 feature, is very useful.) -- JCW2

I apologise in advance if i irritate you but i litterally have no clue what is what when it comes to laptops.

Ive had my Acer Aspire 5920 for a good few years now, it ran perfectly fine on vista for a good 3 years, not a hitch or care in the system. Then out of no where it goes missing for a week, and my mums ex boyfriend had upgraded it to 'windows 7 extreme edition' and none of the buttons of the sides worked, including the most important one- the wireless.

now i understand that a driver synaptics or something fixed the others, and it did. but still the wireless and all the buttons to the left refuse to work.

i cant ask the ex for help because he left on very bad terms and i have none of my original discs left. My friend has now got me running windows 7 professional 32 bit and i have the glowy buttons working, but not the wireless.

the reason i need wireless is soon im going to uni where i cant plug it into the wall to get the internet-that and the socket for the internet cable has started to melt and warped out of shape.

i cant seem to find ANY advice on this matter, that or i just simply dont understand the jargon. I dont care if it means going back to vista as that was fine to work with anyway - but how would i go about doing that if so?

Sorry to be a pain in the dariair.

A friend's laptop is running Windows XP. He's connected to a TP-LINK wireless router which in turn is connected to the internet through a Juniper WiMax modem.

All websites load fine with the exception of GMail and some google-related sites. Somewhere in the middle of the redirects during authentication it just spits out a blank page and sits there. This happens with FireFox, and this happens with IE. This also happens when I use a SOCKS 5 proxy (which operates on port 29000). Only GMail and the few google sites (like search results) don't work. Everything else works fine.

Network connectivity is fine, DNS is being resolved properly, I can traceroute the google webservers, ping yahoo/everything else with no problem.

This isn't a cache related issue, I have completely removed FireFox - deleted the profile folders, and re-installed. Cleared cache in IE as well - yet the problem persists.

This isn't a firewall / antivirus issue, i've disabled them all and re-enabled them without any change. There's no malware or worms/viruses or rootkits of any sort.

Now here's the crazy part. If i disconnect the laptop from the wireless router and connect it directly to the Juniper WiMAX modem, it starts working fine. Everything works, GMail and all. I connect the modem back to the wireless router, and the same problem comes up again. Other devices on this wireless router don't have any such problem (an iPhone and another laptop).

Hi, my M93p died due to a Failed Bios Update. I tried to salvage the rest of the Hardware from my M93p, among which is also a Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Wifi Card, that I bougth from lenovo for my M93p. I tried using it on my new PC Build, which has a Asus Q170 Board, but every Driver I tried reports  "Error 10 Device Cannot Start". By troubleshooting, I found out, that this is due to a so called Hadware Lock or also know as Vendor Lock. Namely Lenovo not allowing to use the Lenovo Hardware on other Boards. This however is only the case in Windows 10. If I run a  Linux Live CD on the hardware, the Intel Wifi Device works out of the Box. Is there a way to make the   Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 work on WIndows even if it is not running on a Lenovo Mainboard? Please Lenovo be fair. I paid you good money for the Hardware. Please let me use the Wifi card on other Boards too. Its not my fault that the Lenovo Board died. Thanks!

My config is HP G6 1075 SA with W7 Home Premium 64 bit pre-installed. It was working well until last week when I decided to install Debian Linux. I am no N00B to Linux and have installed it probably 100s of times. Debian installed and booted well but Windows BSODed with an error 0x0000225 cannot access drive. I formatted C and attempted to reinstall Windows 7 but it is unable to detect the HDD. I accept terms of license and move on to the point of choosing disks but nothing shows up. (There is an option to choose drivers. Where do I locate them? The HP website isn't helpful and I can't even find my product let aside the drivers)

I have already tried :
1. Partitioning an NTFS file system in Debian. Doesnt show.
2. Deleting a partition in Debian and attempt to see the free space in W7 Installer. Didn't work.
3. Try to do the BIOS setting thing (Change SATA option from AHCI to compatible or something). I could find no such setting in BIOS. The BIOS was severely limited with only option of switching on fan.

What do I do ?
The chipset is Intel HM55 if that helps and harddrive is SATA 5400 rpm 500GB.

I hooked up a brother MFC-790CW fax/scan/printer to my wireless/wired belkin router. I have a desktop that is hardwired to the router and it can access the MFC-790 with no problems and in several different configurations. BUT, the laptop just won't talk to it. WHY? The laptop has no trouble connecting to the router and accessing the internet. I have installed all of the MFC-790 software. The laptop successfully pings each entitiy on my network. So, I'm stumped. The laptop has a Marvel Yukon wireless adapter. Maybe there are some issues there. I don't know. My laptop is using Windows XP. Do I need to upgrade it to Vista or windows 7? I thought that maybe I needed a print server or a residential gateway, but the guys at the geek squad said "no, it should work". I have since found that the MFC-790 has a printer server in it. So that is not the problem. I suspect that the laptop would access the printer just fine if I wired it to the router. So I think that the wireless aspect of this puzzle is where I need to focus. But I can't see why the laptop can access the internet wirelessly through the router but not the printer. Would love any input on this. Thanks.

Because we live in a somewhat isolated area, internet access over dialup is our only option unfortunately and thus far we've only had one PC in the house that served as our main PC.

Now we've got a second PC and would like to share the Internet connection, printer, and files from the first PC. Both PCs have wireless NIC cards.

I'd like to know if it's possible to create a mini-network with the two PCs, two wireless NICs and a dialup Internet connection?

If so, any tips, pointers, or references to websites would be greatly appreciated. It seems everyone and their brother has broadband access (DSL or Cable) & wireless routers and none of the sites I've come across help my particular need.

Thanks in advance of any help you can provide. Be gentle, I'm new at all this.

Hi all,

I'd call myself a decently tech-savvy person, but this one has me stumped. Any help would be appreciated!

Laptop: Dell Latitude D630 running Windows 7 Professional, SP1.

Problem: Despite the presence of available WiFi connections, the system states "There are no connections available." WiFi works when booting in Safe Mode with Networking. The laptop also connects fine when hard-wired.
Troubleshooting so far:

Verified Wi-Fi was turned on via switch on the side of the laptop.
Verified connection was enabled.
Updated drivers via Dell's website.
Ran Malware Bytes and cleaned off any malware.
Disabled all firewalls (only one - Windows Firewall).

A:Ethernet connection works, Wireless does not. Wireless works for other devices.

Depending on the computer, there are two things I'd suggest you check on:
1.  Some computers (like my told Toshiba), has a slide switch on it, that physically turns off the Wi-Fi.
2.  My newer computer has a key combo that does that.  In this case Fn+F12.
Best of luck.

I just received a computer that has the Linux operating system on it. I would like to put XP on it. Do I just put a Xp boot disk in it and go from there.
thanks in advance.

A:Linux to Winxp help

Do you want to have both available, called dual boot?

If so you will need to install XP onto another hard drive or a separate partition. If no, then re-partition and re-format the hard drive with the XP Setup on the CD.

Hey, I've just reformatted my pc, and i went for putting WinXP Pro aswell as RedHat Linux 9 on the computer.

I have 2 seagate 80 gb hdds, and i went in and partitioned them druing the windows set up into 8 or so partitions for varios things, and left 10 gigs at the start of the non-windows drive for linux to go on.

Windows installed fine, and can obviously see all the partitions and access them, it can even see the linux partition, although it obviously cant access that.

When I got around to installing Linux, i went throguh the redhat gui installer, and got it to format the left over space in its file system, and call it the boot drive (i think thats what setting it to / meant), at the time it saw all the other partitons and their file systems just fine. Then linux went ahead and installed, and the boot selector and linux are working fine.

The problem is i cant find the other partitions in linux, so i cant acces that data. I think during the setup i should have mapped the partitions to folders for linux, or somthing like that, but i didnt.

Worse case scenario, i can re-install linux (although it took a while), but i was wondering if there was an app i could use or even a command that would get it to be able to see those other fat32 partitions

thanx for any help

A:Linux, WinXP, and Partitions

Type these two commands into the terminal in Linux:

more /etc/fstab

more /proc/partitions

post the results back here.

However, in the mean time, check under /mnt , I think you might find something there! But you might have to manually edit /etc/fstab, which I can help you do if you post the information that I have asked for.

I'm having difficulty getting the printer which is attached to a Win XP Pro system to be available for use by a Win ME system on the same network.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 697C. It is installed and working on the Win XP Pro system.
Both systems can see each other on the network and transfer files back and forth with no difficulty.
The printer on the XP system is marked for Sharing and File and Print Sharing is enabled.
The XP Firewall is turned off, as we use Zone Alarm Security Suite.

When I use Add Printer on the WinME machine, and try to browse for a network printer, I can expand the network to see the computer name of the XP machine, but the shared printer doesn't show up as a choice.

What are we doing wrong?

A:Solved: Can't Add HP 697C Printer connected to WinXP Pro into WinME printer choices

What is the share name for the printer? Win ME uses NetBIOS for local shares, and has a limit of 12 characters to a share name.

My delimma is this...

Primary system is running WinXP Professional, 2 NICs and ICS enabled.
second system is WinXP Professional,
Third system is a RedHat 7.2 box.

I'm trying to get the linux box on the network and I can't make it happen. I can get the Linux box to see the Internet, but not the other PCs, and vice versa.

Has anyone had success in setting up a home network this way?

A:Linux Machine w/WinXP network

Windows uses SMB, Linux doesn't have this capability by default. For you to see the Linux box on your Windows based machines you need install SAMBA SERVER. Once you have it installed, you can use WEBMIN to help with setting up shares.

Hope this helps.....

Im running windows xp professional on an ntfs partition. I have a sound blaster live platninum and geforce 2 mx 400. My cpu is a amd duron 900.
When i run windows xp I have problems with my sound studdering, such as when I first login to windows or when a get an error chime, etc....
The only modification I have done to my computer recently is I installed caldera open linux workstation 3.11 on its own physical partition, which i made using partition magic 7
I do not think that this would affect the windows partition at all as the linux kernal lacks support for writing to an ntfs volume but i wanted to make sure.
also if anyone knows what the cause of this problem can be, could u please help. Thank you

A:winxp/linux sound problems

yep u r right linux cannot write to the ntfs partiton , not only that but winxp cannot detect the linnux partiton , it is just detected as a healthy unknoen partiton

your problem might be because of corrupted sound drivers, try downloading the latest drivers from drivers.com

Well, I'd opt for a $10-15 broadband router (after rebate), and you're off to the races. I have a bunch of Windows machines, a Linux machine, my TiVo, and an X-Box on my broadband. I'm going to be adding Vonage voice over IP service soon, getting tired of spending the big bucks on Verizon.

As my Windows XP 64 bit systems once agian dies on me and the chore of reinstalling the system becomes one of my only options ( I installed the same system four different times in about two months) I was wondering about Linux. Problem is through for me is that there are alot of them out there. Which one to choose? So I'm asking to all of you why did you choose your linux distribution over another and is there anything you would like to change about your linux distribution or the one you have in your opinion is the best?

A:Which Linux works best for you and why?

Ubuntu, It's the darling of the distros at the moment.

You can install it in a dozen clicks or so, totally with the GUI.

It reads and can write NTFS.

The partition manager can create partitions on an active drive. (Defrag first! Don't try this on a drive more than maybe 25% full!).

The GRUB bootloader is easy to implement (again w/ GUI) (for dual boot systems).

You must not be living cleanly! It shouldn't be necessary to reinstall Windows every other week! What's up?

I have an older IBM Aptiva 333 M Hz that I just upgradedfrom Windows 98 Basic(with all updates) to Windows XP SP2. The Aptiva is hardwired to a router and Lexmark X6100 Printer. A laptop and homemade computer are connected via wireless to the router, both are running Windows 98 Second Edition. The network works properly for File Sharing. Network Neighborhood on both the wireless computers see that there is a shared printer on the Aptiva. To both wireless computers the printer always appears to be OFFLINE. The printer operates properly with the XP updated Aptiva Prior to the upgrade, with the Aptiva on Win98 Basic and the two wireless computers on Win98 Second Edition, all network functions operated correctly, including printer sharing.

A:Printer Sharing on WinXP sp2 always shows the Printer as OFFLINE.

"To both wireless computers the printer always appears to be OFFLINE."

And you can't right click on the printer and change it to ONLINE?

I had Linux Fedora Core 4 on my laptop, but i wanted to install winXP again, that was not easy.

I restarted my laptop from linux an booted with the WinXP cd but it did not find my hd.

So i booted and enterd DOS to delete the non dos partitions in fdisk, so i did, but stil winxp install did not find the hd.

so i boot to DOS and run fdisk /mbr to delete GRUB.

Then i booted the winxp cd but still no HD found.

So i tried to debug the hd to remove all hd info:

A:\>debug <enter>
-F 200 L1000 0 <enter>
-A CS:100 <enter>
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301 <enter>
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200 <enter>
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1 <enter>
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80 <enter>

(80 for hd 0 or 81 for hd 1 )

xxxx:010C INT 13 <enter>
xxxx:010E INT 20 <enter>
xxxx:0110 <enter>
-g <enter>
Program terminated normally

But still no hd in winxp install, i can find the hd with the linux install just loading the "promis SATA driver"

And in bios the HD is caled: Sata 378 TX2Plus D0

Ps. Sorry about my bad language

A:Installing WinXP on a laptop after deleting Linux FC4

You need to go to the manufacturers web site for the laptop and
download the sata drivers and put them on a floppy.
When windows setup is starting,at the bottom of the screen it will
say "to install third party SCSI or RAID drivers press F6".
Press F6 and during the install it will ask for the floppy.
This will load the sata drivers so windows setup can recognize the drive.

A:WinXP Home Edition vs. Linux Network

Welcome to Techspot
I have no experience with Linux networks, so one of the other guys will have to jump on this.
However XP home has networking limitations you can make note of ;
-Home cannot join a domain (windows server)
-Home must logon on to Shares and the logon is not automatic(a Batch file cando this)
-Home uses the 'Everyone" permission level by Default in a Workgroup.
Maybe something in there may help

How to?

I've looked for fdisk, so I can use the 'fdisk mbr' command, but it doesn't seem to be on the machine at all, as it was in previous editions of Windows.

Is there another way? I've currently got Linux and WinXP dual-booted with a GRUB boot manager (the standard for Fedora Core 4). Before that, there was only WinXP. I just need to get the PC back to that state, is all.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Last night with some help from cryptodan,I managed to get ubuntu installed without a problem.
Keep in mind this laptop has a windows 7 sticker so yeah it doesn't have secure boot.
If your laptop or notebook or desktop came with windows 8 its more than likely it has secure boot.
Therefore it will not work due to the security being really really aggressive.
