Now i try and go in the bios and it repeats operating system not found . What do i need to do to solve these problems.

Preferred Solution: Problem with my laptop Operating system not found

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an aged P200 (I think) laptop (Gateway 2000) which I kept for my children to play a Win 98 game which won't play on anything newer - Babyz, if you're interested.

The battery is flat and I only play when connected to the mains. However, on the latest turn on I get the message "No operating system found". Anything I can do about this? The laptop has a floppy drive and cd drive.

A:Ancient laptop "no operating system found" problem

It sounds like the hard drive has failed. If you have the Windows 98 and driver installation disks that may have come with the laptop way back when, you could buy a replacement hard drive and reinstall everything and be good to go.

I have a Sony laptop, I formatted and reloaded Windows XP onto it without a problem, turned it off and when I came back to it and turned it on it came up with the above message. I then carried out a repair install of windows, which again went OK, then I loaded SP2, which again went OK, but when I restarted the pc it came up with the same error again.
I am a little confused as it happily booted onto the desktop after loading windows but as soon as I turn it off and back on again it throws up the message. If it was a hard drive problem I would expect problems with loading windows but that goes OK.
Any suggestions from you guys?

A:Operating system not found on laptop

Usually, this is a hard drive error, where one or more of the first four boot sectors has its magnetic media peeling up. Thus it will load OK, but cannot read the boot sectors to start up, due to the tiny error set. It doesn't take much.
This happens on laptops more frequently than desktops. I suspect this is because the Sony laptops, and others in which it happens are too thin, and air cooling channels are too narrow. The hard drive just gets too hot and the extremely thin magnetic coating fluffs off.
Best test is to try another hard drive now. You can get refurb Seagates at www.tigerdirect.com and others... or new WD and Seagates at a low price and with a long warranty at www.zipzoomfly.com or www.directron.com

Be sure to use canned air to clean our your Sony air channels about once a month..

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

Hi, My old laptop was running very slowly so decided to to a "reset", the big reset that deleted my old files and apps etc.  My laptop originally had Windows 7, but about a year ago I upgraded to Window 10 - which i regret as it slowed my laptop down terribly/ Half way through the reset the screen read that it was unable to do a reset, it gave me the option to try again, so I did and a while later it stated again that is was unable to complete reset and gave me the option to cancel, so I did.   This morning I try to turn my laptop on and got a message that is couldn't find an operating system on my hard drive, it had an error msg, which I failed to write down it also directed me to visit HP.com techsupport. I followed a reboot video, which said to remove battery, replace, turn back on holding F10... nothing happened other than the laptop beeped for a long time and the screen reads that an operating system wasn't found, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart, when I do that I get the same screen back again. Please help Thanks

A:Reset laptop and now operating system not found

 > Half way through the reset the screen read that it was unable to do a reset, it gave me the option to try again, so I did and a while later it stated again that is was unable to complete reset  Any other error-message at the same time as the "unable to do a reset" ? My first guess is that your disk-drive is "failing", and trying to write to it has failed. How old is the laptop?  Is it still under warranty? How old is the disk-drive? Can you turn the laptop upside down, and remove a "cover", to view the top of the disk-drive?The date of manufacture, the name of the manufacturer, the model-number, and the serial-number should be visible. What are the values? Please do NOT post the serial-number here.Instead, access the manufacturer's web-site (www.westerndigital.com or www.seagate.com or ...) and look for a "check warranty" web-page.  Use that page to get more information about the disk-drive.

Hi. My grand childs laptop has just died for some reason, it's a Samsung NP-R20, he says it refused to start so he brought it to me as I have had to reinstall the OS a couple of times, but I have not come a cross this before.
You turn the laptop on and it takes a while for the Samsung logo to display, then after a long wait it then displays, operating system cannot be found, you cannot get into the Bios menu as it is not shown when the Samsung logo is displayed you get, press f2 for setup, which when you press shows nothing, and f12 for network boot but nothing for getting into bios, also you cannot get into safemode. I tried a Windows XP cd to do a repair install but get the error message, that it has prevented a serious opperation and stoped the XP cd from loading.I took the hard drive out and connected it to my own Pc but it was no reconised in my bios or in my computer. I also took the hard drive and memory out and replaced it but still the same problem. I thought it might be a hard drive problem, but before I buy a new one I would like some advice as could it also be a motherboard problem as it is not showing the bios menu.
Thanks for any help in advance Dave.

Hi I have a Sony laptop model PCG-38CP, when I turn it on, all I get is a black screen and message "Operating system not found". I went into F2 mode, checked under the Boot section and the hard drive is listed there, but even after making it first in the line, still the error message persists. Checked the bottom of lappy for possible loose connection, all seems intact. Tried F10 or F11, all I get is an annoying beeping noise and back to the error message. Am I correct to assume that I will need to re-install the OS? It was Win XP Pro. Should I get the proper full OS cd or just a recovery disk? BTW, this laptop was just a hand me down so I don't mind nor care if any data will be wiped out in the process.

I have my laptop running 24/7 to operate a program, and just now I glanced at it and it said the stuff about "operating system not found". I tried powering it off and all of the lights across the top started blinking. It was also pretty hot. I unplugged it and took the battery out which cleared the lights, but it still shows the message. The hard drive is listed in the BIOS when I checked it.

Is it the end of the road for this laptop? Luckily I don't have anything important on it.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this because it seems to be an issue in a few different parts of the computer but here's the problem.
When I start my son's IBM Laptop, the IBM Logo comes up and then some sort of clicking/whirring sound comes from where the Hard Disk Drive on the computer is. AFter this occurs for a few seconds it searches the computer for something and then the following message comes up:
PXE=E6I: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Systems Not Found

After that nothing happens. I'm pretty much a novice with computers, so I'm really not sure about any kind of hardware-related issues, which is what it seems like this probably is. Any help or suggestions that anyone has, I would be grateful. I realize there is a good possibility I will have to take this to a pro to get it fixed, but its a Saturday, so if anyone has any suggestions that I may be able to try before Monday, please let me know.

It sounds like you may need a new harddrive. To be sure, make sure all the harddrive cables are firmly connected, especially the power. If it's an ATA disk, try a different slot on the IDE cable and make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly.

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I was copying my files on a USB, then I took it out ( without safely removing) and went out. When i got back, the laptop has already shut itself. when i turn it on it goes Operatin System Not Found. I use windows 8.1 and only 1 hard drive. When the PC goes into VAIO care rescue mode everything is white with options like start BIOS steup, contact support, start from media .... etc which are not at all helpful, unlike others problems which makes the screen black. but the same thing happens to me when i change boot mode to Legacy, but back to normal when to UEFI. i don't have any disc. from what i know the product key is in the UEFI thingy in the computer.

When I start BIOS setups it still shows
System Memory : 12288mb
Hard Disk Drive : 1000gb ( so i presume the hard drive still works)

Methods that worked for others but not me :
1. Taking out the HDD, give it a blow and put it back in.
2. Changing Boot to legacy
3. Changing the boot order to every combination i could.
4. Use a program called Wondershare Liveboot.
5. Reinstall windows 8.1 using a USB boot media, which was downloaded from microsoft home page.
6. Using command promt from USB boot media /scannow

the problem also lies in my little knowledge about computer matter. I couldn't find out if the HDD still works, what version or name it has, don't know how to update the bios as well. Please help me guys

It all started with a strange error message in XP (SP3) without having done anything in the SW. I rebooted and it said a file was missing or corrupt = cannot boot, keep rebooting.
I checked the RAM, tested it: no problem.
I removed the drive, checked carefully with a diagnostic tool (from Hitachi) and no errors at all. I was able to copy the whole drive for backup, no issue.
I reloaded the BIOS, plugged the HDD into the laptop after I formatted it. 'F2' to access the BIOS, the HDD is detected.
But "Operating System Not Found" appears during the boot.
<HINT> after this message, if I remove the drive and insert it again, no more "Operating System Not Found" the next time I boot.

I installed a fresh XP SP3 on the freshly formatted HDD, I can use all the functions but get several BSOD at times, related to pagemgr.sys or ftdisk.sys or others.
rebooting = "Operating System Not Found". Remove/reinsert the HDD and I can boot and use XP for a while until the next BSOD and "Operating System not found" during reboot. A checkdisk before XP is loaded will always show some errors, deleting, replacing orphans...

However I came to the conclusion that it is not HDD related (btw, it's only 8 months old HDD), but more likely linked to the board. Maybe I'm wrong, but I tried so many things...in vain.

I've been running windows xp sp2 on my sony vaio frv31 laptop for, well, months I think. It's been awhile.

Anyway, just yesterday I'm sitting in my living room and I hear the beeping noise my laptop makes when it's trying to boot (my number 4 key is permantly stuck down and I have to hit escape to let it boot). I hit escape, get the flash screen for about forever, and get "no operating system found".

I haven't even touched my laptop in days... I think the last time I used it was sometime last week to play a game (I just haven't needed it lately). My version of XP is an OEM full professional version. I've got my hard drive partitioned into 2 20g sections with nothing but programs I rarely use on the second partition. I've got two firewalls running at all times (the windows firewall and norton internet security) and I do virus scans every week (no problems there last time I checked). I have auto update turned off because I don't like my computer to install things without me knowing about it.

It had no reason to reboot in the first place, and now I can't understand why it won't find my os. BIOS shows that everything is fine and dandy, I discharged the battery per Sony's instructions, and set all BIOS settings to default (not that I had changed anything in the first place - I generally don't mess with laptop settings).

So, I'm going to try to reinstall xp here in a few days (I don't have tim... Read more

A friend of mine recently made the transition from dial-up to a cable modem. I set it up for her and updated all of her software; anti-virus, windows. One of the updates was via Windows update and included the Microsoft Genuine Software checker. This checker said her copy of Windows XP was not a genuine Microsoft product. The Microsoft update shut down at that time. The computer continued to work properly and I sent an e-mail to Microsoft inquiring about message. This computer was purchased from Best-Buy and has had no alterations made to the OS made since its purchase.

All other updates went without a hitch and several re-boots were accomplished during the updates with no problem at all. She stayed up late checking e-mail, etc that night and had no other problems. The next morning when she went to boot the computer, she got an error message "No Operating System Found".

I'm no computer expert, but I seem to do pretty well with most minor issues. This one exceeds the limits of my "expertise". Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? To date we have received no reply from Microsoft on our inquiry.

The victim computer is an HP Pavillion 7955 running XP.

Hi Good Peoples,

A couple of times, in the last few days, when I have booted my HP Laptop it has started the boot cycle and come back with an error message saying "saying operating system not found." This morning, it did it three times, but on the fourth boot it went into Windows. This afternoon, he did it once and when I rebooted it went into Windows.

I went into (C: ) Properties/Tools and did a check disk; but that seemed to be OK.

Is it likely to be a hardware or a software problem? Any tips on how to fix it would be appreciated.

Hello KjGsme, and welcome to Vista Forums!

Before attempting to reinstall the OS, you really should check out the hard drive because of the "Failure Fixed Disk" error. You can try the Samsung website for a hard drive utility. You would need to download the utility, burn it to a disk as a bootable disk (usually "Burn ISO to disk" will do that successfully) and boot to the disk and run the utility. It should check the hard drive and verify whether the hard drive needs to be replaced or not.

If Samsung does not have a hard drive utility you can download, try one of the hard drive manufacturers especially if you can identify what brand of hard drive is in your Notebook. Go to the web site of that brand and use their utility.

Once you know if the hard drive is OK or not, post back and let us know so we can proceed?

Hi everyone, I have an HP Pavillion 8390 that I loaded with XP. It is all stock including hard drive. It was running great when I tried to put a new hard drive in with a possibly corrupt WIN2k already on it. I was trying to fix a different computer and find a good hard drive by checking it on my computer first. Bad mistake. That didn't work, the little bar at the bottom for WIn2k would load then the computer would restart before the Window screen would start up. Well I tried to put my original hard drive back in with everything exactly as before, then I get the "no operating system found". Checked my BIOS and nothing found under the primary. No discs or anything in the other cd drives or floppy. I cleared the CMOS and still same result. I tried the hard drive on a different WIN2k machine and it found the hard drive in the BIOS but wouldn't start the XP. My computer was running the XP just great then I think that hard drive with WIN2k on it did something to my computer. My HP hard drive is Quantum and the other Win2k drive is a Seagate. The BIOS does see the Seagate, it just doesn't see the original HD.

It sounds like you have either damaged the cable or the drive in the process of swapping them around. I'd start by using a new cable and only the original hard disk with XP loaded onto it. Make sure all connections are tight on the cables and see if that helps.

Hello everyone,

I just used Partition-Magic to partition a hard drive, luckily not my computer, it was a friend's. Anyway we did everything as the manual suggested and when we were done we porceeded to reboot, however the screen read OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND. I have no idea what happened, sadly we can't even find his recovery disks,(This is a Sony Viao with XP on it). Can any one please tell me what my options are other than formatting the hard drive? If I boot up from a floppy drive with a startup disk, is there anything I can do to fix this problem. I guess the reason he wanted to do this was because he was running out room on his hard drive 100 Giga bytes, split 85/15 and apparently everything was being written to the 15 gig side, frankly I don't know anything about partioning and don't understand how the hard drive was split 85/15 to begin with. At any rate I apologize for the long message, hope it makes sense and that someone can give me some advice.
I'd appreciate your feedback on this.
Best regards,

A:Operating system not found!

I have an idea that the drive was partitioned because the "recovery" disk was on the small partition?

More and more big box makers are doing that. Cheap!!! If that is what happened he will need either a set of recovery disks which he would have to get from Sony, or a windows disk. Without the disks you are in trouble.

You can download diagnostics from the drive manufacturer to rule out drive failure . . Most have options to create a CD . . otherwise, Floppy drives are dirt cheap.

I have a Sony vaio, I was just about to backup my files when my computer powered off. When I turnt it back on, I had a message saying ' operating system not found'. I am sure I had a legal version of Windows 7. I've tried to reboot it using the command line, from a usb. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.

A:Operating system not found

Boot into the BIOS and see if the HDD is recognized.

The error you noted has nothing to do with your OS being legal or not. It simply means that the computer cannot find an OS to boot. Which typically means the HDD has failed (or become corrupted).

I have a HP4455 desktop. We were gone for a couple weeks, so before I left I unplugged this computer. Just in case the power went off... Anyway, after I plugged it back in and turned it on, I got message: Operating system not found. This is an older computer. I use it only for my business. I have most of the files on it saved to floppys and zip drives, but not everything. So I really need to get this up and running. I have done some research her on your site. Last night I removed the battery. I just put it back in and hooked the computer back up and turned it on. 3 error messages: One was for the time and date. the other two were: error 0251- system cmos checksum bad-default configuration used
error 0280-previous boot incomplete-default configuration used.. I went in the settings and set the date and time and exited. restarted the computer and still get operating system not found.. In the settings area and in the boot section it is as follows : 1 Removable Device, 2 [ATAP CD ROM] 3 Hard Drive 4 Network Boot Is this the right order? Please help. Thanks

Hi, My HP Mini seems to come up with the "Operating System Not Found" error most times it reboots. The last time was when it had to do a Windows Update. It rebooted to finish but came up with that error. I have found that if I unplug the PC for several minutes and plug back in and the press the power button it boots normally again. How do I prevent this error from happening? Thank you in advance.

I have an acer 5560 notebook with Windows 7 professional installed. I do not have any disks with the laptop as it is a second hand one. I tried to repartition my drive and once i finished, I put the laptop on hibernation. However now when I try to open it, it says An operating system was not found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. I am not sure what to do. Alt+f10 doesnt seem to work either.

A:An operating system was not found.

The error with no OS:

You mean powering it up from scratch NOW or just after this hibernation back to normal attempt?

Remove power to it for 10 secs and then try it again and post results please.

...Making sure first it was not just a snafu on hibernation. [a mode I avoid myself]

If you somehow partitioned your way out of the drive being properly setup to boot, you'll likely need to download a Windows 7 image (same version you are using) on another PC and burn it to a disc, then boot from it.

They can be found here:

You need that disc to do the repairs on 7, see the tutorial on this issue, if needed, found here at Seven Forums:

Startup Repair

Via repartition process, it's possible it trashed the master boot record or boot partion or file, that's most likely what happened.

Worse case scenario is you make it a linux box instead, if the OEM Windows is totally hosed and new OS is needed and you don't want to pay for another Windows install, I am threating to do that to a used laptop I bought 3 years ago, myself, if the HD fails, has Vista 32-bit. 8( hehe

How many partition to you have on your hard disk. Do you have any important files on your computer. Continue to same procedure without the option of back up files in case in you donot have important files on your computer. Or else install on another primary partiton If you have more than one partition on your hard drive.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR220E running Windows Vista. When I turn the laptop on it seems to get hung on the startup screen, which has Vaio Intel Phoenix technologies on the screen for about five minutes. Then a black screen appears with plain text that says, "Operating System not found".

I'm not even able to get to the BIOS. I've pressed all Function keys and the escape and delete keys, but the same text just keeps repeating itself.

Please help. Thanks!

How long have you had this machine?
If not to long and the warranty is still good, give Sony a call.

i need some help. i have a computer and the harddrive is bad. so i tryed booting it up with a window xp disk and i reinstalled XP. but when i turned it on aging no operating system found. and now it wount even load up to anthing and just goes to no operating system found. any ideas

A:no operating system found

Try going to the website for the manufacture of that drive. All of them have some software that you can download and run tests on your drive. A lot of them have ones that will run in windows now but you want the DOS based ones that will make you a boot disk.

Once you boot up there you can run all sorts of tests on the drive. Sometimes you just have to do a full format witn one of those utilities to fix the drive, but if there is a major problem that software will also get you a error number which if your drive is still under warranty you can use to RMA it.

This computer is basically a brick, and I have tried a lot of stuff, so I am on your doorstop now. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Here are the particulars:

Pentium 4
Did have XP PRO Installed

This is an older machine that I had refurbished and I wanted to put a clean install of XP Pro on it. I found the old XP disk, got in, reformatted the hard drive and started the install. Halfway through I got an error message stating that it could not find one of the files. I told it to retry, and it locked up. I tried to be patient but after 30 minutes I figured it wasn't going to get any better, so I shut down and rebooted.

After inspecting the CD-ROM I saw that it had a scratch. Instead of a reboot, I got an error screen. I cannot remember the exact error, but in essesence it was telling me that it was missing a Master Boot Record.

What follows is really frustrating. I tried to boot from the CD to try again, but it would not let me. I have jacked around with the BIOS changing the order of everything, and it would do anything but tell me about the boot record. It would not read from a CD.

And yes I tried EVERYTHING. I tried:
1. Other copies of Windows all the way back to Win 95.
2. Other XP disks and even a Vista Disk.
3. I made a Knoppix CD and that got ignored.
4. Got wise and made a Knoppix Thumb Drive...that never even lit up.

So it refused to boot from the CD or Thumbdrive no matter what I did in BIOS. So, I decided to go to Amazon and ... Read more

It doesn't seem like something that would happen from a current Windows installation, but I guess it's possible. Have you tried booting from a floppy yet? Updating the BIOS may also fix it.
