Q: Problem with my laptop Operating system not found

Now i try and go in the bios and it repeats operating system not found . What do i need to do to solve these problems.

Preferred Solution: Problem with my laptop Operating system not found

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an aged P200 (I think) laptop (Gateway 2000) which I kept for my children to play a Win 98 game which won't play on anything newer - Babyz, if you're interested.

The battery is flat and I only play when connected to the mains. However, on the latest turn on I get the message "No operating system found". Anything I can do about this? The laptop has a floppy drive and cd drive.

A:Ancient laptop "no operating system found" problem

It sounds like the hard drive has failed. If you have the Windows 98 and driver installation disks that may have come with the laptop way back when, you could buy a replacement hard drive and reinstall everything and be good to go.

I have a Sony laptop, I formatted and reloaded Windows XP onto it without a problem, turned it off and when I came back to it and turned it on it came up with the above message. I then carried out a repair install of windows, which again went OK, then I loaded SP2, which again went OK, but when I restarted the pc it came up with the same error again.
I am a little confused as it happily booted onto the desktop after loading windows but as soon as I turn it off and back on again it throws up the message. If it was a hard drive problem I would expect problems with loading windows but that goes OK.
Any suggestions from you guys?

A:Operating system not found on laptop

Usually, this is a hard drive error, where one or more of the first four boot sectors has its magnetic media peeling up. Thus it will load OK, but cannot read the boot sectors to start up, due to the tiny error set. It doesn't take much.
This happens on laptops more frequently than desktops. I suspect this is because the Sony laptops, and others in which it happens are too thin, and air cooling channels are too narrow. The hard drive just gets too hot and the extremely thin magnetic coating fluffs off.
Best test is to try another hard drive now. You can get refurb Seagates at www.tigerdirect.com and others... or new WD and Seagates at a low price and with a long warranty at www.zipzoomfly.com or www.directron.com

Be sure to use canned air to clean our your Sony air channels about once a month..

Hi, My old laptop was running very slowly so decided to to a "reset", the big reset that deleted my old files and apps etc.  My laptop originally had Windows 7, but about a year ago I upgraded to Window 10 - which i regret as it slowed my laptop down terribly/ Half way through the reset the screen read that it was unable to do a reset, it gave me the option to try again, so I did and a while later it stated again that is was unable to complete reset and gave me the option to cancel, so I did.   This morning I try to turn my laptop on and got a message that is couldn't find an operating system on my hard drive, it had an error msg, which I failed to write down it also directed me to visit HP.com techsupport. I followed a reboot video, which said to remove battery, replace, turn back on holding F10... nothing happened other than the laptop beeped for a long time and the screen reads that an operating system wasn't found, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart, when I do that I get the same screen back again. Please help Thanks

A:Reset laptop and now operating system not found

 > Half way through the reset the screen read that it was unable to do a reset, it gave me the option to try again, so I did and a while later it stated again that is was unable to complete reset  Any other error-message at the same time as the "unable to do a reset" ? My first guess is that your disk-drive is "failing", and trying to write to it has failed. How old is the laptop?  Is it still under warranty? How old is the disk-drive? Can you turn the laptop upside down, and remove a "cover", to view the top of the disk-drive?The date of manufacture, the name of the manufacturer, the model-number, and the serial-number should be visible. What are the values? Please do NOT post the serial-number here.Instead, access the manufacturer's web-site (www.westerndigital.com or www.seagate.com or ...) and look for a "check warranty" web-page.  Use that page to get more information about the disk-drive.

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

Hi. My grand childs laptop has just died for some reason, it's a Samsung NP-R20, he says it refused to start so he brought it to me as I have had to reinstall the OS a couple of times, but I have not come a cross this before.
You turn the laptop on and it takes a while for the Samsung logo to display, then after a long wait it then displays, operating system cannot be found, you cannot get into the Bios menu as it is not shown when the Samsung logo is displayed you get, press f2 for setup, which when you press shows nothing, and f12 for network boot but nothing for getting into bios, also you cannot get into safemode. I tried a Windows XP cd to do a repair install but get the error message, that it has prevented a serious opperation and stoped the XP cd from loading.I took the hard drive out and connected it to my own Pc but it was no reconised in my bios or in my computer. I also took the hard drive and memory out and replaced it but still the same problem. I thought it might be a hard drive problem, but before I buy a new one I would like some advice as could it also be a motherboard problem as it is not showing the bios menu.
Thanks for any help in advance Dave.

I have my laptop running 24/7 to operate a program, and just now I glanced at it and it said the stuff about "operating system not found". I tried powering it off and all of the lights across the top started blinking. It was also pretty hot. I unplugged it and took the battery out which cleared the lights, but it still shows the message. The hard drive is listed in the BIOS when I checked it.

Is it the end of the road for this laptop? Luckily I don't have anything important on it.

Hi I have a Sony laptop model PCG-38CP, when I turn it on, all I get is a black screen and message "Operating system not found". I went into F2 mode, checked under the Boot section and the hard drive is listed there, but even after making it first in the line, still the error message persists. Checked the bottom of lappy for possible loose connection, all seems intact. Tried F10 or F11, all I get is an annoying beeping noise and back to the error message. Am I correct to assume that I will need to re-install the OS? It was Win XP Pro. Should I get the proper full OS cd or just a recovery disk? BTW, this laptop was just a hand me down so I don't mind nor care if any data will be wiped out in the process.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this because it seems to be an issue in a few different parts of the computer but here's the problem.
When I start my son's IBM Laptop, the IBM Logo comes up and then some sort of clicking/whirring sound comes from where the Hard Disk Drive on the computer is. AFter this occurs for a few seconds it searches the computer for something and then the following message comes up:
PXE=E6I: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Systems Not Found

After that nothing happens. I'm pretty much a novice with computers, so I'm really not sure about any kind of hardware-related issues, which is what it seems like this probably is. Any help or suggestions that anyone has, I would be grateful. I realize there is a good possibility I will have to take this to a pro to get it fixed, but its a Saturday, so if anyone has any suggestions that I may be able to try before Monday, please let me know.

It sounds like you may need a new harddrive. To be sure, make sure all the harddrive cables are firmly connected, especially the power. If it's an ATA disk, try a different slot on the IDE cable and make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly.

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I was copying my files on a USB, then I took it out ( without safely removing) and went out. When i got back, the laptop has already shut itself. when i turn it on it goes Operatin System Not Found. I use windows 8.1 and only 1 hard drive. When the PC goes into VAIO care rescue mode everything is white with options like start BIOS steup, contact support, start from media .... etc which are not at all helpful, unlike others problems which makes the screen black. but the same thing happens to me when i change boot mode to Legacy, but back to normal when to UEFI. i don't have any disc. from what i know the product key is in the UEFI thingy in the computer.

When I start BIOS setups it still shows
System Memory : 12288mb
Hard Disk Drive : 1000gb ( so i presume the hard drive still works)

Methods that worked for others but not me :
1. Taking out the HDD, give it a blow and put it back in.
2. Changing Boot to legacy
3. Changing the boot order to every combination i could.
4. Use a program called Wondershare Liveboot.
5. Reinstall windows 8.1 using a USB boot media, which was downloaded from microsoft home page.
6. Using command promt from USB boot media /scannow

the problem also lies in my little knowledge about computer matter. I couldn't find out if the HDD still works, what version or name it has, don't know how to update the bios as well. Please help me guys

It all started with a strange error message in XP (SP3) without having done anything in the SW. I rebooted and it said a file was missing or corrupt = cannot boot, keep rebooting.
I checked the RAM, tested it: no problem.
I removed the drive, checked carefully with a diagnostic tool (from Hitachi) and no errors at all. I was able to copy the whole drive for backup, no issue.
I reloaded the BIOS, plugged the HDD into the laptop after I formatted it. 'F2' to access the BIOS, the HDD is detected.
But "Operating System Not Found" appears during the boot.
<HINT> after this message, if I remove the drive and insert it again, no more "Operating System Not Found" the next time I boot.

I installed a fresh XP SP3 on the freshly formatted HDD, I can use all the functions but get several BSOD at times, related to pagemgr.sys or ftdisk.sys or others.
rebooting = "Operating System Not Found". Remove/reinsert the HDD and I can boot and use XP for a while until the next BSOD and "Operating System not found" during reboot. A checkdisk before XP is loaded will always show some errors, deleting, replacing orphans...

However I came to the conclusion that it is not HDD related (btw, it's only 8 months old HDD), but more likely linked to the board. Maybe I'm wrong, but I tried so many things...in vain.

I've been running windows xp sp2 on my sony vaio frv31 laptop for, well, months I think. It's been awhile.

Anyway, just yesterday I'm sitting in my living room and I hear the beeping noise my laptop makes when it's trying to boot (my number 4 key is permantly stuck down and I have to hit escape to let it boot). I hit escape, get the flash screen for about forever, and get "no operating system found".

I haven't even touched my laptop in days... I think the last time I used it was sometime last week to play a game (I just haven't needed it lately). My version of XP is an OEM full professional version. I've got my hard drive partitioned into 2 20g sections with nothing but programs I rarely use on the second partition. I've got two firewalls running at all times (the windows firewall and norton internet security) and I do virus scans every week (no problems there last time I checked). I have auto update turned off because I don't like my computer to install things without me knowing about it.

It had no reason to reboot in the first place, and now I can't understand why it won't find my os. BIOS shows that everything is fine and dandy, I discharged the battery per Sony's instructions, and set all BIOS settings to default (not that I had changed anything in the first place - I generally don't mess with laptop settings).

So, I'm going to try to reinstall xp here in a few days (I don't have tim... Read more

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

Report back what happens as you go as there may be more steps.

Do you have an EFI BIOS? Enter BIOS setup to see if HD is detected, and if there is an EFI Boot disk in BIOS Boot order listings.

Make sure the hard disk is properly inserted in the laptop and has not come loose. You will need a screwdriver to remove the hard disk panel to check. That would be the first thing to check. Post back after you have done so and we will provide further steps if needed.

Hello everyone

I booted my laptop up today but after a long time on the opening screen it went to a black screen with the words 'operating system not found'

I'm not sure why it's suddenly done this? It worked fine yesterday and I haven't been installing or doing anything with it other than word documents and going on the internet. I'm really worried the hard drive is fully dead and I won't be able to get music and pictures off it

I bought it in 2008 and have had no problems with it before. It has been restored once when the CD drivers weren't working due to a bug with itunes and windows vista. It's worked fine since then until today!

Is it terminal?

I have searched the forum and have come across similar issues, but no solution for the specific situation I have.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEH laptop. Original HDD was a 320 GB SATA Western Digital Scorpio Blue. This hard drive crashed, and would not load Windows, just gave an error message saying to insert repair disc. I made a repair disk and a clean install Windows 7 ISO boot disk. Neither would work.

I purchased a new, blank Seagate 500 GB SATA HDD. (I'm not really too computer-savvy, but it wasn't difficult to remove the old hard drive and insert the new one-also there is only one HD space). Now I am trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (which came with the computer and I have a product key for). When I power on the computer, I only get the error message "Operating System Not Found". I cannot get into BIOS or any other boot screen.

I briefly put the old hard drive back in (I can at least get to BIOS with it) to make sure the BIOS boot order was correct (optical disk drive is the default first boot option). But with the new hard drive, it sounds like it's trying to read the disk, then I just get "Operating System Not Found". I have tried all F keys (usually F2 gets me to BIOS), delete, enter, escape, ctrl+alt+del, escape, shift+ F10 and I just get a repeating "operating system not found". I downloaded the Windows 7 ISO from Digital River after finding the link on this forum. I burned it to a DVD. I have tried two different ... Read more

Hi all,
A friend just dropped off a computer that suddenly stopped booting. All she gets is "operating system not found". There is no hard drive activity at all so, I thought it was the drive and swapped it out for a known good one. But that did not work either. There was activity but it would not boot. So, I tried swapping the cable. Also no luck. A boot disk diagnostic said there is nothing on the drive ( no partitions) Is there something else I can check in the bios or is there a program that I can run from a diskette to see what the heck is going on? Tell me it's not the motherboard.

You need some kind of bootable media.

On a working pc download and burn to cd PW free boot cd. Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Boot it up on the sick machine.

If you have 100mb partition, rt click it set as Active, ok , apply.

If you don't have 100mb partition - then try setting the main windows partiton Active instead - if that doesn't do it, set the manufacturers recovery partition Active.

I've a laptop using Mandriva Linux 2010.1, and i'd like to install Windows Seven, not on dual boot, i want just Seven. Problem is i receive a "Operating System Not Found" message when i try to boot from the install-DVD, and Mandriva launches from HDD.

I thought it was a broken DVD but he runs well on my other PC.

By the way, i was using Mandriva 2010.0, i've installed 2010.1 yesterday with a DVD. That DVD does not run anymore either. But i can read audio CD or DVD movies so it's not an hardware issue.
Can you help me please ? Thanks in advance. =)

PS : i can't use USB-stick.

Hello Eshelia,

You will have to format the drive to NTFS first. Because Linux is on it now, windows will not see a partition.

Now that i re-read your post i dont know if thats your problem. Sounds more like a disk problem.

This is my first time on here so I hope I am in the right location for the problem I have.
I have a Dell XPS 8300 with i7-2600 CPU @3.4 ghz.  It came with Windows 7 but upgraded to Windows 10 before I seen a Dell post saying not to upgrade the XPS to Windows 10 so I am not sure if the error I am getting has anything to do with it.  It worked fine till about a month ago.
I have never had any problems with my PC till I plugged in a friends U-drive to help him with a resume. I was using Word 2013 when it froze, then my PC froze so I did a hard reboot. Everything came up as normal but I couldn't find the word document I was working on. MS Support said to do an all files search using   .wbk files   and to click on the file and search for the missing word document. I did that and a program started loading called    adware.bp . I click don't install and conducted a search again for the word document and the same program popped and started loading again. I again clicked don't install and then all my problems started.
I found the document and I started working on it. I closed Word and came back to it and it said Word was not initialized. I clicked on Excel and it said Excel was not initialized. I did a normal reboot and I got the error ' No operating System Found ', I did a complete Dell Diagnostic check and everything came back as normal operating condition. Both hard drives are working, ram is working and everything else check... Read more

so now when i when to the bios..i found that the HDD : none..

if i understand it correctly this may due to the loose connection to the motherboard or the faulty in hard drive.. despite knowing that, i still don't know what to do...

i try loading the default setting..but still no change...

A:operating system not found, HDD/SDD : none

You recycled the %temp% folder? Did you delete the contents inside the temp folder or delete the temp folder it's self?

Try opening up the computer and make sure the HDD is SATA cable is seated properly.

Or the drive is failing. Does your machine of a hard drive diagnostics tools?

I have an hp g6032ea laptop with vista home premium.
it was recently dropped and now on start up all we get is a black screen with operating system not found.
I suspect that the hard drive is either scratched or cracked as it makes a rather ominous clicking sound.
I have a brand new 160gb hard drive which i have fitted and a recovery disc which i purchased from HP as the machine did not come with one.
when the new drive is inserted if I boot from the recovery cd it starts the process then puts up a message stating that the laptop is not supported by the recovery disc and switches itself off.

does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?
this is driving me nuts and it will shortly be leaving by the nearest window

Message Operating System No Found all of the sudden appeared on my DeskTop.  The computer has not been moved and the only changes that have been made to it is recently supgrading to W10 from W7. about 2 weeks ago. I have exhausted all of the HP self help steps with no success as well as internet searches for the issue. I am unable to do a system restore because it says No Restore Points Found.  System Recovery does not work as well. Can anyone suggest what my next step should be.  The only things I can get when I start is a black screen with No Operating System.  I have run my W7 repairs disks which do not work, as well as my back up discs.  Nothing is working. Thanks.

> Message Operating System No Found all of the sudden appeared on my DeskTop.  Does this appear within a few seconds of powering-on your computer? Before that, do you see a message like "press <BLAH> to enter BIOS SETUP" ?If so, press that <BLAH> key.  You'll see the basic screen, showing the hardware characteristics,e.g., amount of RAM, CD/DVD drive connected on port SATAnn, <brand-name> disk-drive connected on port SATAmm. If you do not see a listing for your disk-drive, either:* there is no electrical power reaching the disk-drive ("loose connector"),* one end of the "data" cable is not properly connected to the disk-drive,* the other end of that "data" cable is not properly connected to the disk-drive,* your disk-drive has failed, and the motherboard cannot communicate with it. > I am unable to do a system restore because it says No Restore Points Found.  Installing Windows 10 caused the creation of System Restore Points to stop. It's easy to enable it, going forward, but that's no help to you. > System Recovery does not work as well. Did you boot the "System Recovery" from CD/DVD media, or from a partition stored on the disk-drive?If the latter, then at least the disk-drive was detected by the motherboard, and that partition is accessible. > I have run my W7 repairs disks which do not work, as well as my back up discs. Do the W7 disks find the partition on your disk-drive, and l... I am trying to help a family member fix their Presario 700 Laptop using XP. When I attempt to boot up, I receive the message ?Operating System Not Found?. I am able to get into the BIOS screens. It has been suggested by my research that I first check whether the hard drive is recognized. Where in the BIOS screens do I check for this? The title is PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility. I see verbiage that says:

Parallel Port is enabled
Base I/O Address: 378
DMA Channel 3

The next screen lets you choose from where to boot up from. The Hard Drive option will yield the ?Operating System Not Found? message?

A:Operating System Not Found

if you can get into bios, in the first section or option you should see the hard drive, and opposite it you should see auto, click on it just to make sure it is registered by bios, then press Esc and then go to the second section "advance" in there you should see boot order click on it then make sure the order set is first your hdd , you can disable other options. then click on Esc then save and exit . if prob still persit then it is likley you had partition and the boot order has been corrupted

Hi there.

I have a Vista 32bit installed on my Brand new Dell Inspiron 1370. It came with Windows 7 64bit but that was a Japanese version so i formated my HDD and installed my Vista 32bit on it. Everything is working great, except that mostly whenever i restart my PC, a message pops up at start showing "Operating System Not Found". So i have to go to BIOS and in boot window, there is always an Exclamation mark besides hardisk and DVD Drive, so i hit SHIFT + 1 key and exclamation marks go away, and then PC restarts fine.

This doesnt happen all the times but it does happen very often.

Anybody else facing this problem?

Asif_Ahmed_Joy Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about Operating System Not found since the failed Win10 Upgrade and wanted to help. One of to things happened during the Upgrade:1) It mostly completed but failed in writing the new boot loader files2) It failed early into the Upgrade, trashing your PC as a result Lets deal with 1) first -- by recreating the boot loader files. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  While you CAN change these settings, do NOT. If you do, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.htmlYou will need to go to the Advanced Options screen and click on Startup Repair.  You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. If that does not work, then we're on to option 2) -- which is not good news. Whi...
