Unable to move file from desktop - Security Tab - Unable to Display

Q: Unable to move file from desktop - Security Tab - Unable to Display

I had a folder on my Desktop that just won't delete. I tried deleting it and moving it to another location. It deleted everything within the folder, yet the folder still remained.

I've been having the problem of my Desktop not updating when files/folders are deleted, so I have to manually refresh after a delete to show it gone. Well, the folder decided to stick around. I tried Renaming, Deleting, changing Folder Permissions, Reboot of the Computer.....Nothing seems to help.

If I try to open the folder, I get a "Location is Not Available" along with the "Access Is Denied" error. Going to Properties>Security prompts me that I don't have permission to view or edit permission settings. Under Advanced says the same thing and for Owner it says "Unable to Display Current Owner."

I'm running Windows 7

I have tried looking as some of my questions seem silly most of the time - I looked at the link - Take Ownership Shortcut

I hope that I have done it correctly.

I have trialled it on my desktop and it comes up with a CMD screen and then moves the file. When I extracted the .reg it warned me that it would alter some .tmp files - I read the tutorial and I thought that what I did was fine. I know not to take ownership of Windows 7.

I hope the following information assists and I just want assurance that I did it correctly or if I should have tried another means.

I would rather know that I have done something or I will try extracting to remove the .reg.

Thanks people

I was reading this, but way too hard Runas

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try Unlocker. It's always good to have anyway. I've found it very stable and safe to use.

I have a new problem. I am running Windows XP home edition on an HP 5280 laptop with 1.5 meg of memory. I had installed a program called "Registry Cleaner 4.0" , and the icons were suddenly locked into their positions; I could not move the icons, and cannot insert a desktop icon into a desktop folder. The icons will launch their respective programs, and when right-clicked, the menu appears as it normally does. Thinking that the problem was with the new program, I then uninstalled it. The uninstall process appeared to proceed normally. However, after uninstalling, the icons remain "frozen", are unable to be moved, do respond to a right-click, open their respective programs, but cannot be moved with the cursor. Anybody got any ideas as to what to do? Thank you.

Did they some how get put in "Auto arrange"? Right click on the desktop, look at Arrange Icons by and make sure the auto arrange is not checked.

Just auto updated to the latest version of windows 8, and now I can't move my desktop icons, after they were automatically moved out of place after the update.  I have already tried to select and deselect auto arrange icons, but this just moved them
all to the left end of the screen, and didn't solve the problem of me being able to move them.  I have since changed my settings to no longer automatically install pointless updates that do nothing but waste my time and mess with my settings, and would
just like to access this simple feature that I've always had.

I have Windows 7 SP1 enterprise on my office machine and all of a sudden I am unable to move the desktop icons anymore. When I click on them I am able to select them but can't drag and drop, very weird behavior. Second time this happens. First time I rebooted

Hi Fadi.D,
Thanks for the post!
I susgest you enter into the Safe Mode to check if the issue persists.
Meanwhile, do a Clean Boot, disable the startup items and non-Microsoft services to find if there's any conflicts.

Welcome to the forum, Are you moving them by right clicking on the folder and choosing "location" enter new path, then click move, then apply?
Drag and Drop may not work when doing this.

Dear Forum,

I am in the situation where I can not cut and paste some files and folders from my desktop to other destinations.

It comes up with the message 'File Access Denied'

It also says that I require permission to move it. It says that I require the computers permission to move the file to another location.

I am in the situation that I am trying to move some files to another location. In some cases there is one instance of the files - as per what I am posting.

I just wish to move one file as per the items on my post. I am not too sure if it is the 'take ownership' instance of which I do not know what to do.

Can some one please assist me so that I can remove these items from my desktop to my external hard drive? I am not that crash hot on computers

A maddening problem and one I can't work out.
I've always been able to move desktop icons around as needed or in groupings. I was clearing lots of un-needed icons tonight, and also clearing a crowded desktop by moving icons into a shortcut folder. There was one Word icon document I wanted to read first as I didn't think I would need to save it. It was nothing critical to the machine anyway. Well, it turned out to be something saved or to be opened by IE. I hate that damn browser and ran into the usual problem with things on IE. Namely, freeze ups and even hitting Cntrl/Alt/Delete wasn't much help. The damn thing sat there and then a message box kept opening telling me it would end program but never did so I did a hard shutdown. On reboot afterwards, I could not manually move the icons that were left. Grrrrr!

Oh well ... I have a cleaner desktop but damn it, right click on desktop doesn't give me the option to arrange manually.
What did I miss here?

Have XP with SP3

I'm certain someone here knows the answer.
Much Thanks in advance.

PS: Hope I have posted this in the correct place.

For the life of me, I can't move the pagefile on windows 7 HP 32 bit.  I have unchecked "Automatically manage pagefile" I told one one on c to have "No pagefile" and the one on D to both "Allow system to manage pagefile" and set the min and max to 1500 mb to try both settings.  Windows always creates a "Tempory paging file" on reboot.. On c.  And when i go back into the settings, it tells me the size of pagefiles on all frives is just over 700 MB..  The size of the temp pagefile I created.  I THINK that may be because I am putting the pagefile on a SD card (Dispite the fact no one will listen, it IS the best case in this circumstance.  Don't really wanna go over it) and the drivers don't load.. But why when I create a 16 MB pagefile on C, and a 1.5 GB on D, does it show the total pagefile for all drives at 16 MB?  Windows should have loaded the drivers by then and decided to use both drives, should it not have?

Even single photo does not move into the newly created folder named '2014 photoes.' It appears to me 'lock' or some issue being unable to move.

I'm sure that there is a real simple solution to this problem, and I'll probably kick myself once someone replys with the answer here, but I just can't think of how to do this.

When I double click on "My Computer" off the desktop, the window that pops up displays the contents, grouped by type and contents. See attached file for picture. The problem that I'm having, is that there was another file on there listed with "User's Documents, Mark's Documents and Shared Documents", called "Grandma's Documents". While I was playing around, I accidently moved that file, and can't seem to get it back to where I got it from. The file "Grandma's Documents" is still on the computer and I can access it if I go into the "Documents and Settings" file and choose the appropriate path, but I can't seem to move it, or copy it out of there. Not having it there doesn't really effect me that much, but when my Mother uses the computer, she has to click a thousand different things before she can get to her files.

I was going to just use the system restore function, but funnily enough, had forgotten to turn that function back on after getting rid of the my doom virus the other day.

Any suggestions???

Vio.

ps. I'm running WINXP here if that helps.

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

A:Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

I've bought a 7300GS for my friend's HP A1737C-B Desktop, he bought the computer back in 2006. We put it in, set the bios option "primary video" to PCI-E and nothing shows up on screen when we boot up with the VGA cord connected from the graphics card to the monitor. We've tried the other bios option "PCI" and "On-Board" and the board refuses to use the video card! I've cleared the pci-e slot for dust and cleaned the pci-e contacts, but we get the same results, computer turns on, computer monitor says "no signal" even though the video card fan starts works. It uses a A1737C-LA NodusM3-GL8E motherboard. The specification page for his desktop is here.

We've also tried booting up with the card in but using the onboard graphics, it works just fine, but the problem still persists, we even trid installing the drivers for the card whilst using onboard graphics. The driver installation states that we have no NVIDIA card installed. I looked in device manager and found that there were several items that were unknown, each one was has the name PCI in it. So the computer detects something, but I'm guessing the board must be the problem.

I've been trying to get that this problem for months now, so I'll try to answer as much questions about this problem to help get this fixed.

Thanks.

Hi,

I was hoping that someone could help me out with this as it's slowly but surely driving me ever closer to insanity.

Basically I until recently had this nasty spyware that amongst other things locked me out of my task manager as well as the desktop tab in the display properties menu.

I removed the spyware and managed to get into the task manager by disabling the disabling function in the group policy menu (by running gpedit.msc).

However am still not able to get into the Desktop tab.
The options in the tab are simply greyed out (as was previously the same with the taskmanager button). When I tried the same trick in the group policy menu by going into User Configuration/Administrative templates/Control Panel/Display option - It made no difference. What I have tried is to simply disable all the possible settings there were (in the User Configuration/Administrative templates/Control Panel/Display option).

Is there a different section in the group policy menu which I have to alter or is there some other solution?

I would be very grateful for any help or possible ideas any of you guys might have as i'm completely stumped on this one

Ta,

Paddy

If you utterly trust the source of a file attached to an e-mail you receive, then you can do the following in order to unblock it in Outlook Express.

Go to the Tools menu -> Options -> Security tab.
Uncheck the box "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".
Press Apply.
Save the attachment, and then (this is important!) go back and check that box again, pressing Apply once more.

I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. Hi,
Can anyone suggest a way to delete a file from Desktop! I'm not joking.. I unzipped a folder that had a file with a really long file name... I have no idea how it got there.. I'm unable to open/ move/ copy/ rename/ delete that file.. In short it is unrecognized by the Win 7 file system itself...!!! I can only see that file but cannot do anything else with it. Pls suggest a way to delete the file..

Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to delete a file from Desktop in Win7

Hello Ginoy and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may just be a ghost file. Right click on the desktop and click on Refresh to see if the file goes away. If not, then see if restarting the computer will get rid of it. If still unable to delete the file you could try a couple of free tools. One is called Unlocker and the other is called FileAssassin.

UNLOCKER 1.9.1 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB

Malwarebytes : Remove any locked file with FileASSASSIN

If you still can't get rid of it it may be malware. Suggest you run a full updated scan with your installed anti-virus suite. No AV program is 100% effective 100% of the time (if there was such a thing we'd all be using it.) So I'd also run a couple of free on-demand scanners. The more scans you run that come back "no malware found" the more likely your computer is without malware.

Windows Defender Offline (must be created on a malware free computer)

Malwarebytes

ESET Online Scanner

SuperAntispyware

HitmanPro

Please post back if anything helped or not.

I'm banging my head on my desk trying to figure out why I cannot delete this file that appears on my desktop. Originally, it was a youtube video that I downloaded with one of the available sites that allow you to do so. Anyway, I've since then deleted the file but this 0byte file continues to be displayed by explorer. I've refreshed explorer, rebooted, and even gone into safe mode in an attempt to delete it. However, when trying to delete the file it says that the file does not exist. I've opened up the command prompt, navigated to the desktop, and got a dir listing and the file appeared in that list as well. I tried using rm to remove the file from command prompt and it said the file does not exist.

I tried setting HiJackThis to remove the file on reboot but apparently it checks for the files existence before accepting a filename. (as shown in the attached image)

I've never had a problem of which I've not been able to solve on my own after doing a bit of research. However, this seems to be a rather unique issue... Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on?

Thanks

-------
Edit:

After spamming a few people on my messenger, I provided a solution to this matter... The following command worked to successfully remove the file:

del "\\?\C:\Users\Devon\Desktop\videoplayback.flv."Click to expand...

Thanks anyway.

Hi,
I have a pc running on Win XP in office. As part of testing, i had to try and install an activex control packaged in a .cab file on a Windows 7 and Internet explorer 8 from an application we built. I connect to this Windows 7 machine using the remote desktop connection from my PC running on XP. But the install DOES NOT happen on the Windows 7 remote desktop. It just refreshes the screen and nothing else happens.
If i try to install the same thing on another Win 7 PC ( to which i connect directly and not through remote desktop ), i am able to install the activex control.
This issue is hurting me bad. Can you please help me with this and provide me a solution ?
I can give you more details if needed.

I ran into this too... there are several things Remote Desktop doesn't let you do... like intalling unsigned software, changing services, etc. ... you know, the stuff a hacker might do....

Hello - this morning I clicked on an image online and ended up with the My Security Shield infection. I successfully went through the removal process as recommended by bleepingcomputer - but have been unable to complete the last step - deleting the HOSTS file. Can someone help me with this? I just went to the cmd prompt and typed in del c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS and was denied. What should I try next?

Thanks so much!

A:My Security Shield removal unable to delete HOSTS file

First off any time you use the cmd prompt you have to right click cmd.exe and choose Run as AdministratorYou can navigate there manually by following the path you typed which is:c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTSIf you delete this you can make a new hosts file in note pad.create a note pad file inside of it copy and paste the following text.# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.## This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.## This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one# space.## Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.## For example:## 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.# 127.0.0.1 localhost# ::1 localhostName the file HOSTS without an extension, in other words it does not need .txt in the name.Place the new HOSTS file in your etc folder.Bruce.

Hello,

My girlfriend's computer has been bogging down a lot lately. It is sluggish and there seems to be a severe issue with her desktop.

Whenever you save a file to the desktop, the whole explorer/desktop seems to freeze up as soon as the download is finished. To make matters worse, whenever you try to delete this file from the desktop, the computer freezes up as well. I am unable to remove this file.

Also, when you run a virus scan, the scan hangs up whenever it arrives at the part to scan the items on the desktop. It also frequently freezes up when browsing the net and opening extra windows/links.

I have removed all spyware, run chkdsk over night but the problem persists.

Does anyone have any idea besides a completely reinstall of Windows XP?

Thanks a lot.

I'm really have a time in my Windows 7 Embedded development environment. If it not WEDU, or the AnswerFile.xml, it's something else. This time the DISM command fails to build my WIM file. I discovered information about the log entry I receives in the diam.log.
DISM MSI Manager: PID=1248 Failed copying from C:\Windows\System32\Msi.dll to C:\$WINDOWS.~LS\PackageTemp\3a98f774-60af-4876-8e01-ac3e32caf53c\2C5C4631-A82B-4BE0-88F4-E01582D61C18\Msi.dll
- CMsiApi::Initialize(hr:0x80070002)
My error is similar to the above statement which I found referenced at Use Log Files to Diagnose Image Builder
Wizard Installation Problems. The missing Msi.dll appears to be the issue. The only thing is, the URL specifies the error but no solution is provided.
What possible steps can I take now?

I have a Gateway MX6920 that had Windows XP preinstalled on it, I formatted and installed Windows 7. it only has the basic Windows 7 programs on it +Firefox, Google Chrome, TeamViewer, & an Anti-virus, but I have an ongoing issue where the computer completely freezes. the mouse doesn't work, no programs open, and I cannot bring up the task manager. if I press ctrl+alt+del it will still be frozen for about 5 more minutes, then give me the following message the "logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed" and then just keeps being frozen until I cold boot shut down.

I scanned for viruses, ran sfc /scannow, with several programs but they all report clean

I am at a loss and this is a daily issue

Googling this error message brings up limited but unresolved issues

A:the logon process was unable to display security and logon options whe

according to the following link:

Failure to display security and shut down options. The logon process - Microsoft Community

it looks like the windows winsock needs to be reset. Hopefully doing that will solve the issue: to do that; do the following:

open a elevated command prompt(click start, programs, accessories, then right click on command prompt and select run as administrator) type netsh winsock reset hopefully that will help. If not that then in the same command prompt; type the following: netsh winsock reset

try one of the above commands and see if that helps to resolve the issue.
netsh winsock reset

Operating System: Windows XP, SP3
MS Office: 2007 Pro

In the past, if I had the window open to open a document, I was able to move a file by dragging & dropping into the new folder (within the orig location). When moving a file on a network drive. However, if I try to do this now, it looks like it will be moving the file, but when I release the drag & drop, the file isn't moved. It is still in the orig location.

If I go through "My Computer" I am able to move by using the drag & drop method, but I do get a security warning.

I am thinking that since the security warning comes up, that is why I'm not able to move.

File orig location: S:\Finance\Feb 2012\file.XLS
New location: S:\Finance\Feb 2012\Complete\file.XLS
S: is a network drive

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this would have all of a sudden started. In the past, last year for example, I was able to do this move.

Thank you for your considerations.

I've been having serious issues with my folders in the last few days. Recently I have found myself inable to move, or re-name any folder on my computer, or even on a flash drive for that matter. So as it stands, I can't do anything with any folder. I also found out earlier today that I can not recover files that have been deleted into my recycle bin.

I also, can not move any folders, I can copy them all I want, yet I can not move them to another location either on my comp, or onto a flash drive.

I use Vista an an only two month old Compaq CQ60z.

I found a "solution" to my problem, and that was to repair my registry. This aparrently works for other people, but it does not work for me. What it did was to re-make the registry entries for Folder Descriptions. This did nothing.

As a last note, I at one time turned of UAC, but after turning it back on, and off, and on, and off, it hadn't helped in the least. I really hope you guys can find whats wrong, thanks ahead of time for any ones help.
