'Protected Mode' and 'Run As Administrator' in Internet Explorer

Q: 'Protected Mode' and 'Run As Administrator' in Internet Explorer

I'm trying to understand how these two options work together.
If 'Run As Administrator' is unchecked
on IE shortcut, does Protected Mode in IE Option work or not?
If 'Run As Administrator' is checked
on IE shortcut, does Protected Mode in IE Option work or not?
In my assumption, the Enable Protected mode in in IE internet zone only works when IE process is launched with a standard user access token the user uses . If IE process is launched from a administrative user token (run as administrator), will this
IE Option still work if it's checked and restrict access to securable objects like system files and registries?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Win 7, 64 bit with IE 8
I went into Internet Options, Security Tab and turned Protected Mode off for each of the Internet zones (I don't remember why) but then later turned Prot Mode on again for each of the zones.

But the status bar at the bottom of IE 8 window says Protected Mode is Off.

How do I get the Status to indicate properly?

A:Internet Explorer 8 Protected Mode On or Off

1.) Launch Internet Explorer.

2.) Go to 'Advanced tab' in 'Internet Options' Pop up window.

3.) Down below 'Settings' clcik on "Restore advanced settings"

4.) Now under "Recent Internet Explorer settings" click "Reset..."

5.) Restart IE.

Thank you :)

Since August 28th Automatic Download from Microsoft, I've been unable to print documents in Internet Explorer which concern mostly finance. This includes Intuit payroll check stubs, my bank statement, and sometimes a recipe. The webmaster at the USPS consulted about the inability to no longer do Click N Ship labels suggested Internet Explorer 8 as the villain and suggested I change browser. Should I go back to Internet Explorer 7 and if so how. Using a different browser like Mozilla's would be difficult because of my vision. I have to stick with what I know. Or should I delete the update if that is where 8 replaced 7?
If you can help please e-mail me at [email protected]
PS If I disable protected mode even for a few minutes, my computer just goes crazy with security warnings... and this doesn't work in all cases such as Click N Ship.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

I was checking the Internet Explorer default security settings for the different zones. I haven't changed anything and mine are showing Protected Mode is Enabled for the Internet and Restricted zones.

If I want to reduce the level of access that a malicious website might have on computer, then I can turn on Phishing filter and that takes care of this problem.
I just came to know that , I can enable IE Protected mode and that will reduce the level of access a malicious website might have on computer.

Are both these solutions used for the same purpose ? Which one is better option ?

A:Whats difference between Phishing filter and Internet Explorer Protected Mode ?

In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program. By ensuring the user consents to these kinds of actions, the likelihood of automated or unwanted software installation is reduced. This feature also makes you aware of what a website is trying to do, giving you a chance to stop it and take time to double check the trustworthiness of the website.

Phishing is the technique of convincing a user to send personal information to a bogus (or potentially malicious) website that is designed to appear legitimate. The Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer combines a local system scanning for suspicious website characteristics with an online service.

Hope this makes sense.

In Internet Options under the Security tab, click on each zone icon at the top to double check that the Protected Mode option is checked in each zone. Be sure to close and reopen all instances of IE8 to apply the changes afterwards. You may not have it checked in one of them, or did not open and close IE8 afterwards before.

What does the internet Protected mode do and shouldn t it be on if possible? - thanks . . .

A:Internet Protected Mode

From the Microsoft website: "In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program."

The first thought that comes to mind is the browser reset function that restores IE7 back to facorty defauts. This tends to clear up alot of thoses things like this that cause strange problems. You can find the Reset in the Internet Options under the Advanced tab.

Thank you

A:Internet Protected mode has changed by itself!

Go to Tools / Internet Options , Security Tab.

Click on each icon, then for each icon's page, checkmark Enable Protected Mode ....
It doesn't do any harm to enable protected mode for all types of sites.

IE classifies web sites you go to, and detects whether they are local on your hard drive, on your intranet etc. and turns Protected Mode on or off accordingly. After setting the checkmark as per above, it will always be on.

Since a few days back a strange problem started ocurring for some users in our domain. Some have IE9 others like me have IE11. Problem is that IE can't browse Internet pages (it just keep loading with the white screen) when Protected mode is ON. Previously
there was no problem with this. Other browsers don't have this issue. OS in the company is Win7.
Thank you.

A:Can't browse Internet zone when protected mode is ON

Hi Leo,
Could you please include a link(s) (copied from the IE Address bar) to any website you are having problems with, in your questions. This will enable us to visit the sites to make some tests and guesses.
Protected Mode, on Win7 forces the IE tab process to use a x64 process, so x86 activex controls will not run and are blocked.
For IE11/Win7 there is also ActiveX filtering which will stop x86 or x64 ActiveX controls from running.
IE11 also has depreciated the ActiveXControl object which some sites may use for feature detection. From memory, I don't think IE9 had ActiveX filtering, but there are Addons for all versions of IE (Flash block for example) that have a similar functionality.
Use Tools>Manage Addons>Show all Addons to locate and find the properties of your installed ActiveX controls and whether or not they have been disabled.
So I await your re-post with some sample web addresses where the problem is occurring.
Also, the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in noAddons modeRob^_^

I'm finding that our users are experiencing issues accessing full functionality from multiple web sites and when I disable Protected Mode, their issue is resolved.  I have some specific cases that I would like to share:
1. A website which is secured.  The Windows security dialog appears and prompts the user to enter credentials (Not an HTML form...this is a windows dialog).  If protected Mode is enabled on the Internet zone, then this prompt never appears and
therefore the users cannot sign-in and gain access to the site.
2. OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online are accessed using ADFS for authentication.  The sites were attempting to load but simply timing out until I disabled Protected Mode on the Internet site.  Then the both sites (accessed via
https://portal.office.com) would completely load and be usable.
3. There are others but now that I think of it, they appear to be redundant.  It seems with Protected Mode enabled, authentication does not function properly on multiple sites.  We have tried circumventing this by adding some of these sites to
the Proxy Exceptions List and also configuring policy to treat all Proxy exceptions as Intranet Zone.  Protected Mode is disabled on the Intranet zone.  However, it seems counterintuitive to have Internet sites added to the Intranet Zone or to Bypass
the proxy server to access them.  So I would love to know where I'm going wrong with our configuration of In... Read more

I don't know for what reason but running 32 bit Vista and Internet Explorer 8 RC1 it only works when I right click and choose run as administrator, but unless I do this it freezes and nothing loads up. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

A:Internet Explorer 8 only works when run as administrator

I could be wrong about this, but have you tried logging into the computer as admin and reinstalling internet explorer? Make sure you remember to enable access to other users as you see fit. I had a similar problem on my 32bit vista system with my internet explorer and also my world of warcraft. this actually solved the problem with my internet explorer.

Something else to keep in mind; vista uses virtual storage for settings for each profile on the computer. I found that i could use totally different mods for my different programs based on the login to the computer. Just remember there is a difference between altering these settings in admin mode and editing them in another profile that is LIKE an admin. I hope your issue works out and i hope maybe something i have said might be useful and accurate

Hi, Internet Explorer 11 will only open if I right click and then select Run As Administrator. If I don't do this, the window opens, then closes straight away without doing anything. Links in Incredimail will not open in it either.
Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox work fine (and with the Incredimail links).
I have not added any programs recently. I have tried a clean boot, I have disabled all the add ons, I have checked/unchecked Enable Enhanced Protected Mode, I have made Google Chrome the default browser, then changed back to IE11, I have run Malwarebytes Anti Malware, Super Anti Spyware, Windows Defender and CCleaner, checked for Windows updates...all to no avail. Tried a system restore as well, but no joy.
Could anyone please shed any light on this problem?
Many thanks.

-Do you have a check for it in the firewall? Just like you have to give Google Chrome access in the firewall it's possble somehow IE11 lost it's access.

Hello !
I am running Windows 7 Home premium.
My Internet Explorer 10 hangs on when launched, even if my account is in administrator group; it works fine when I right-click on the icon, and click Run as administrator: then it works OK.
When I use in the "normal" way, the one that is locked, I also noted that many items in settings are greyed, I can't access Internet options.
I disabled all add-ons and plugins, and the behaviour is the same. I tried to run without add-ons, nothing changed.
I tried to reset Internet Explorer, nothing changed.
Finally, other infos: I use Symantec Endpoint Protection, and MalwareBytes antimalware, and the PC seems clean.
The solution could be to change browser, and in fact I had to install Chrome, but... I don't like that PC doesn't do what I want that it should do !

I just did a reload and went to use IE7 and saw that the protected mode was Off.

I double clicked on it, lower right side of screen, and a Security box came up indicating that it was in the Protected Mode, with the upper Internet Icon being assigned to the setting.

I unchecked the box and clicked Apply and a couple warning boxes came up and I clicked OK on them. I then got off of IE7.

Later I came back to IE7 and went to the Security box again and clicked to Enable the Protected Mode. I then got off of IE7 and then later came back, I did not do a restart, and it still did not take. I am still in the Protected Mode: Off status.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get this change to stick?

Is your User Account the Admin account or a standard User account?

If you are the Admin-Windows is most likely corrupted, and no longer sees your User as having Admin Priviledges.

If so, then most likely your problem is due to User corruption, you can attempt to take ownership, or log into the hidden admin account to see if it works there, If it does, or you are prevented from accessing it through elevation prompts, you may need to repair/re-install Vista.

ps- do you use reg cleaners? Windows corruption is usually a result of either malware or user error (i.e., reg cleaners)

Hello and welcome to TSF.

You will need to download the required analysis tools, and transfer them to the affected machine vis USB flash drive, or other removable media, if you cannot directly download it on the affected machine.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt

Save both reports to your desktop.

Download this version of GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable. Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double click the exe file.
The program will begin to run, and perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.
In any case, after the initial scan is complete, click on the Save button, and save the log file somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

The subject says it all. We have all the
PCs in a domain. Via GPO
is "Enhanced Protected Mode"
Under Win 8.1.
everything works perfectly.

Update on Win10: domain user
(with roaming profiles
- but should not matter ...) are not able to open any page in IE zone "internet. If I type the URL manually and press ENTER, nothing happens. When I click on a link tp any external page on our
intranet page, two new tabs open with
the URL "res:
//ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm#,about: blank"

Intranet and Trusted Sites
(also via GPO defined) works fine (because protected mode is disabled for them by default).

By trial and error I found out that it
is the "EPM" that causes the problem.
If I switch it off, IE works again.

But why does it work
under Win8.1 and no longer
under Win10?
(BTW, when I try to start IE like this "iexplore -extoff", it opens with an empty window, stays for about ten seconds and then closes again. No error message, nothing ...)

Can anyone confirm this behavior?

Sounds as though the document is not active until selected. But, this is only a guess on my part.

Hello. Looking for some advice please. Since I`ve had my Advent 2001 laptop for around five years (and still working well!) I always log in using an administrator password. Now I don`t actually need to have this activated because nobody else in my household uses my laptop (mum is 76 and has trouble returning her TV!) so what I wanted to ask was:

1. Should I get rid of using a password every time I want to use my internet/laptop? And if so, how do I disable it?
2. What would my screen then look like on boot up? Instead of a screen with a box to type in my password, would it just show the windows icons for me to click on/open?

I can`t remember if was asked to set this password up when I originally set up my laptop when new, but also can`t remember if it was optional or not, hence my asking about it now. I`d really just prefer to boot up and click on my windows symbol to connect to the internet rather than going through a password every time I log off. x

A:Administrator - password protected

Actually....I don`t think it`s easy to do after googling some answers and others have asked how to disable their windows password and can`t. It seems as though it was a default thing when the system was set up. I use windows 7 home premium. I might just keep it if it means messing up my laptop! If it was a matter of clicking a button to switch it on/off, simple. But I think it`s more of a settings nature and command prompts.

I am a technical support engineer and  i know its an old question but even after 3 days of searching for the solution i could not find the answer. we use a proxy script (lets assume its www.xyz.cgi) to access non intranet sites. but in some computers
we dont have connections tab in internet explorer settings due to restrictions. is it possible to enable that use automatic configuration script option without having the connection tab? i know we can set the proxy server from registry key "auto config
URL" key. but there is no registry key to disable the "automatically detect settings" and enable the second checkbox.

Hi guys,

Have an issue and ive searched and searched with no resolution ( maybe the words im using if there is a fix)

The issue a client is having is they need to be running 32 bit browser to run in order to use a check scanner with a local bank. when they try using IE11 it run 64 bit and will not run 32 bit no matter where you launch it from. Confirmed that enable protected
mode is turned off as well. They can use google chrome eith a add on called IE tabs but it hasnt been playing nicely so would rather they use internet explorer if we can get it to run in a 32 bit mode. anyone have a suggestion on what else we can try

This is my 1st post, so hello to all Windows Users.

How do I turn on the compatibility mode in IE 9 Beta, so that it will work automatically for every website that has icon with it?

Thanks in advance.

A:Internet Explorer 9 Compatibility Mode

Hello Nenes, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you want all sites to use compatibility view in Internet Explorer 9, you will need to press ALT to be able to click on the Tools Menu bar item instead to. Afterwards it's the same as in IE8 in the tutorial below.

Internet Explorer Compatilbility View - All Websites

If you only want specific sites to use compatibility view, then you will still need to manually click on the compatibility view icon to turn it blue when it appears in the IE9 address bar, or manually add the website to the compatibility view list.

Internet Explorer Compatibility View - Turn On or Off

Hope this helps,

Help Needed!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop, running Windows 7, 64 bit. Two weeks ago my Internet Explorer began running slowy, and then after a few days, the program would open but after about 30 seconds, would start clocking and give a Not Responding error message. It runs in Safe Mode just fine. I downloaded Firefox and experienced the same problem.

I have been trying to find an answer for the past week. I tried several things from different forums and posts.

1) msconfig; Disabled add-ons - restart - problem remains
2) Malwarebytes - 0 problems were found
3) CCleaner - no help

I saw one of your posts that said to run HiJackThis ....I would really appreciate anyone who can read it and tell me what needs to be done so that my Internet Explorer will run in Normal Mode.

I am a computer novice, so will need the Dummies explanation.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

A:Internet Explorer will only run in Safe Mode

May not be the same problem, but I recently had a similar situation with my neighbor's PC. They'd been using Norton Internet Security for years. All of a sudden about a month ago they had sporadic and then no internet connection. But they had connection in safe mode. I tried everything I could find online to no avail but eventually led me to uninstall NIS using their Uninstall utility. With NIS uninstalled, everything was fine. I tried twice reinstalling NIS (after Uninstall utility) and couldn't get it to work. So, I replaced NIS with Komodo and everything's fine again including their Internet access being much faster than it had been in a long time according to them. Thought I'd mention this just in case you're using NIS or, maybe, some other AV is causing a similar problem.

A:Internet Explorer In Safe Mode

i am not much more than a newbie, but i might be able to help you. safe mode has an option menu. i think you may want to choose "safe mode with networking". if you chose the first option "safe mode", the connection to the internet is disabled. some safe mode options direct you to "pages" that don't appear to have any way out. there is a flashing underscore like a command prompt, and you're supposed to type "quit", "stop" or "exit" (then hit enter) to leave. there is no red X in the upper right hand corner. i can't remember which word it is.

I am quite a novice with computers but my pc has internet connection but I was unable to access internet explorer it just said address not valid or page could not be displayed. I was told to do a reset on internet options which I have done and nothing happened. I was then told to try and access it in safe mode. I am now in safe mode and can not get out of it! Help please how can I get back to normal mode and get my Internet Explorer page back. Kind regards,

A:safe mode and internet explorer

Hey, to get out of safe mode (if this is windows safe mode you're talking about) then when booting:
- Tap F8(Before the windows image and loader comes up)
- Choose "Normal..."
- Press enter.

As for the IE problem, is this on every page?

I have been having problems with internet explorer the browser and explorer.exe on my windows. when i right click on my computer and go into properties from the start menu i get the windows error message "problem caused explorer to stop and restart your page" then it makes my taskbar and desktop icons go poof then come back. a similar thing happens to my internet explorer browser when i tried to use it...but it would reopen the page 3 times then stop from a loop. even with no add on enabled it does it. ive done the sfc /scannow and reset and disabled addons.

today for some reason i put it in private browsing mood and it is behaving itself...no more pop up error box loop or error. what is different about private browsing mode that makes it work and can i use this as a clue on how to fix it.

Okay, first of all I'm running Windows Vista. I recently got a virus called "System Tool" which is a fake antivirus. In normal mode it seems to block any executable file. I am working towards removing this annoyance.

So that being said, i went into safe mode with networking. I connected via Ethernet cable to laptop. It does connect locally. But, when i open up ie 7, it does not connect, it gives me the default "Diagnose connection problems" screen.

Please help me out,

A:Internet Explorer not working in safe mode.

The issue was solved. It was actually the router i was using. It was defective.

Thanks anyway!
