Do all ransomware files require an active Internet connection in order to encrypt your files?

Q: Do all ransomware files require an active Internet connection in order to encrypt your files?

Last week I have been messing around with Windows Firewall Control, and have enabled Medium Filtering.
This denies all apps from accessing the internet, unless I allow them manually, one by one.
Is this boring process going to increase my ransomware protection (refer to title)?

PS. Please don't hijack this thread with recommendations of anti-ransomware protection like CF, I already know them. Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Do all ransomware files require an active Internet connection in order to encrypt your files?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am under the assumption that Ransomware encrypts files upon execution.

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

http://www.symantec.com/business/theme.jsp?themeid=pgp

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

Do/can behavior based anti-ransomware solutions block a ransomware threat before it can even encrypt 1 file or they block it after they have encrypted atleast 1-2 files?

A:Do behavior based anti-ransomware solutions block a ransomware threat before it can even encrypt

Difficult to answer, it depends on BB patterns/algorithms and ransomware type.
Many ransomware use native Windows encryption APIs thus making difficult to recognize the malicious behavior.

A few days ago, I noticed a popup saying computer wanted to reboot and would if I didn't postpone it. I wasn't doing anything, so I went ahead and did it. The windows updates (running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit) applied and I got back to the desktop. Adobe put up a box saying there was an update for it too, so I clicked on it. Before I could start it though, I got a windows box that said "Encrypting File System" and told me to backup my file encryption certificate and key. After some searching on google with a different computer, I found that this sometimes come up even if you have never encrypted anything as I have not. So I went ahead and let it save the key to a flash drive. I did the cipher /u command to find if any files were encrypted. It found thousands of files in 7 directories. Mostly pictures (.jpg) on the second hard drive and they weren't viewable.

Error: "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location."

Filenames were green in explorer. So I tried using the backup of the encryption certificate and key. It seemed to restore just fine, but all the files were still encrypted. I tried the decript command "cipher /d" but that wanted to either be in the directory or specify the directory/filename and the list from the /u just flew by and would only scroll back so far.

After some more searching, found a .vbs script to find all the encrypted files... Read more

A:decrypt files files that I didn't encrypt

Well, from what I've been able to find and try, looks like those last two directories are simply not recoverable. Since I didn't encrypt them in the first place, I don't seem to have a key for it.

So, for the future...
What made it encrypt those directories so I can not do it again?
What should I do now to prevent problems like this again? Just backup my encryption key and try and remember where I backed it up to? The current one should be good for a while. One of the many things I tried was extending the expiration date to 2113.

Hello,

I am a technology consultant helping my client with a very infected pc- I have full remote access to the box and he is available if I have to run something on the box with no network.

His pc became infected with some ransomware scam - the main txt file reads:

Your documents, photos, databases and other important files have been encrypted
with strongest encryption and unique key, generated for this computer.

Private decryption key is stored on a secret Internet server and nobody can
decrypt your files until you pay and obtain the private key.

If you see the main locker window, follow the instructions on the locker.
Overwise, it's seems that you or your antivirus deleted the locker program.
Now you have the last chance to decrypt your files.

Open http://43qzvceo6ondd6wt.onion.cab or http://43qzvceo6ondd6wt.tor2web.org
in your browser. They are public gates to the secret server.

If you have problems with gates, use direct connection:

1. Download Tor Browser from http://torproject.org

2. In the Tor Browser open the http://43qzvceo6ondd6wt.onion/
Note that this server is available via Tor Browser only.
Retry in 1 hour if site is not reachable.

Copy and paste the following public key in the input form on server. Avoid missprints.

A:Help! Hijacked Files Encrypted - all files renamed with .askyneh (ransomware sca

Hi there,
It appears that you have been infected with CTB-Locker - and unforunately it is a very real ransomware.
Please read below for more information.

The newest variants of CTB-Locker typically encrypt all data files and rename them as a file with a 6-7 length extension with random characters. The newer variants also do not always leave a ransom note if the malware fails to change the background, like it generally does. Compounding matters, the newer CTB-Locker infection has been seen in combination with KEYHolder, TorrentLocker (fake Cryptolocker) or CryptoWall ransomware. Unfortunately, there is still no known method of decrypting your files without paying the ransom and with dual infections, that means paying both ransoms.
A repository of all current knowledge regarding this infection is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this tutorial: CTB Locker and Critroni Ransomware Information Guide and FAQ
There is also an ongoing discussion in this topic: CTB Locker or DecryptAllFiles.txt Encrypting Ransomware Support & Discussion.

If you have any questions, it is best that you post in the discussion topic mentioned above.
To avoid confusion I have asked a Moderator to close this topic. Good luck.

Hello,
System is a Toshiba Satellite L755-S5353 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Intel Pentium CPU B950 @ 2.10GHz 4GB RAM.

This laptop came into my shop with the FBI screen. After making full backup and scanning with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Symantec Endpoint Protection on my "Server" I was able to actually use the laptop again. But when i go into my documents everything has a .html file extension.

If it is a word document, the file looks like this: "xxxx.docx.html." When I try to open the file it opens up Internet Explorer with a Decrypt Protect screen. Which I know is fake because it is asking me to pay a fee. The link it opens is http://mblblock.in/index.php. I tried to remove the extension but when i try to open the doc or jpeg is says it is corrupted.
Also ran rkill which found nothing. The Antivirus on the machine is McAffee.
I have looked at the backup i made before i did anything and still can open those files from the backup.

I completely reloaded the machine because my customer was in need of the computer. I do have a full backup and still have access the files I want to get back.

Any help would be appreciated!

decmblblock.exe Download Link!!!! This tool fixed the problem!!!

I downloaded the tool and ran it. I removed all the folders it wanted to search except the external i have the back up on. Took around 30 minutes to complete and could view those files again. All word docs, jpegs, and audio files work again.

I notice now i have duplicates of all files. One with the file extension .html(BAD) and one with the actual file extension(GOOD). Now all i have to do is delete the bad files and everything will look like normal again.
:NOTE:

I ran this tool from MY computer. I plugged the backup drive into my computer via USB Adapter

Essentially you cannot do this with the software/programs these companies provide. They are designed to upload and download while storing on the hdd. In order to get copies into the cloud and off of your hdd then you should use the websites of dropbox, google drive, etc.. and sign in there, following with what you want uploaded. If they are pictures/videos/text documents you will be able to view them in the web browser, but for editing purposes and the such you would most likely need hard drive access. If your computer ever becomes permanently unbootable and if you didn't back up your key with those files then Windows encrypted files will be lost. Beware of that. Accordingly people recommend True Crypt instead.

A:Don't want others see your files. Encrypt them with XP

Blade Jones makes a good point regarding NTFS encryption. It is a very valuable feature but you must understand the implications of using it. On this forum and others I have seen many cases where a user has reinstalled the OS or upgraded to a later version, only to find that important encrypted files are no longer accessible. This is a serious matter. NTFS encryption scrambles the contents of a file using a key that is a part of the user account. If that key is lost, and it will be when the OS is reinstalled., it is almost impossible to decrypt such files. Creating a new account with the same name and password will not create the same key.

It is possible to backup the encryption key before an OS reinstall but few people do so, or are even aware of the need.

With any encryption method involving a password be very sure you do not forget it! Forum rules do not permit help with lost passwords.

I believe it is becasue when you originally encrypted the file, it used the original user account information to create the hash, etc for the encryption. When yoou reinstalled, did you recreate the user accounts with the same names as originally created?

I am attempting to encrypt files on a Windows 7 OS using EFS.
Receiving an error that states "The File Recovery certificate being outdated or expired is the most frequent cause of this invalid recovery certificate message".

I have located this to an expired certificate under RSoP, belonging to an account called sysadmin. The problem is that this laptop was a computer that I was given when I left my previous job. I'm presuming that account belong to the tech support team. It no longer exists under user accounts.
I've logged on with the Administrator account and recreated a certificate and generated the DRA, but still receive the same error. The certificate for sysadmin under RSoP still remains.

A:Unable to encrypt files using EFS

You're up a creek without a paddle man. EFS is non-trivial and you need the original Recovery Agent to access it.

Consider this scenario:

disk is EFS
user X has a password
user X account is deleted, but the data is kept
we discover, oops, we need something
recreate user X and even reuse the same original password
ACCESS DENIED results.
The encryption key is created such that it is unique to

the HD
the partition
the user
his/her password
time of day the password is created
The ONLY choice is to have created the Recovery Agent while the account was still active.

if you want to encrypt without 3rd party you need to get higher version of windows 7 because i think home premium doesn't have that functionality

Whether you need to protect internal or removable drives, BitLocker in Windows 7 makes that protection easy because it works with almost any drive. Windows 7 simplifies the encryption of internal drives by automatically creating the hidden boot partition
necessary to use BitLocker to protect the OS volume, eliminating the need to manually select that option during installation or to repartition the drive afterward. Best of all, BitLocker can be enabled on drives running Windows 7 with a simple right-click...STEP
BY STEP GUIDE FOR SIMPLE ENCRYPTION IS:-
1.To enable encryption you would right click a folder or file and then choose Properties from the displaying menu.
2.Once the Properties page appears you would click the Advanced button on the General Tab and choose the Select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box, and then click OK.
3.Another dialog box will come up to give you the option of applying the changes to the folder only or to the folder, any subfolders found and the files within.
[NOTES FROM THE FIELD] – It is important to note that once you start encrypting information that you should back up your encryption certificate which is the “key” to lock and unlock the data. If your certificate and
key are lost or damaged and you do not have a backup, in most cases where a local system is involved, that encrypted information is lost as it remains forever locked.

A:what are encrypted files ?? do we have any way to encrypt or decrypt and file ??

An encrypted file or folder is a file or folder that only someone with the appropriate permissions can view.

If you are the administrator of a computer with folders or files on it that you have created then you can encrypt them and only someone with the appropriate permissions i.e you and anyone else you give permission to can see and view the contents of that folder or file.

You can only do things with the file if you created it or are the administrator or have the appropriate permissions.

Hi,

When I got my Flash Drive today it came with a small application called SecretZip which runs from the drive and allows me to encrypt and password protect the files on there, Of course I could use WinRAR but as I use it for College and other places i cant install WinRAR on them PC's.

I have used our friend Google to try and find this program but I cant.
Does anyone know where I get it or a application like it that runs from the drive?

Thanks.

A:Does ransomware encrypt all CDs which are inserted in the infected pc?

Hello-
Can you please add more information, and not just one line. Is your system infected ??

Why would you want to place CDs in a compromised system to begin with, unless it included a method to repair the infection ??

First you would need to repair the compromised infection (or problem), and then resume the use of that computer.

How do I get back the files that were in an encrypted folder in Windows XP? I went to the User I used to encrypt them (right click on folder->encrypt folder and subfolders) and undid that option, but even though the folder and subfolders are no longer listed in green color (the color of encrypted folders) the files themselves are still gone, just the folders themselves remain, but no files at all that used to be visible in those folders. I hate encryption. I never thought it meant "hide these files from everyone, including ME." It's so stupid. How do I decrypt my folders, or, perhaps more accurately, how do I decrypt the files that used to be visible inside the folders and subfolders in the previously-encrypted folder? I even did the lengthy thing related to Certificates and still the files themselves are hidden from me. And they're not simply "hidden files" because I tried that option in options->View but it didn't do the trick. There's gotta be another way.
Thanks

Hi everybody,

I am new here and actually after I checked different contributions, I liked the place, it's really helpful, and I hope to be a permanent member. Well, I am new to VBA, and I just got a macro that runs on active open sheet, then I need to run the same macro, but this time on more than a file/ sheet (actually it's a big number, like 1000+), closed and already saved in a folder. I would pretty appreciate if anyone helps me to add the necessary code ( which will direct the macro to : focus on a specific folder in a specific location (e.g. E:\myfolder) , then run on every excel file in that folder, and to save every file before close , doing that until the last file in that folder .. that's it .. Any help?

Many thanks

Hi,

I am running IE8 on Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit). My Temporary Internet Files folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5. I have enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders and removed the tick for Hide Protected Operating System files.

I've noticed that streamed .wma file appeared as .dat file in the temporary internet folder. I've tried copying it to the desktop and changed the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. In Windows XP platform, I have no problem retrieving the streamed files as they are saved in the original file format (i.e. .mp3 or .wma) in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Please advise.

Thank you & regards

I've noticed that I am no longer able to run certain applications that require an internet connection, such as Google Earth and Limewire. Even Firefox doesn't work (although IE does, which is strange). In each case, I get some sort of error message saying that I am not connected to the Internet or that my firewall is blocking the application. My internet connection is fine and I've already added those applications to my firewall exceptions list (I also tried disabling the firewall but that didn't help either).

It seems that this came about all of a sudden but obviously something must have changed. I'm running Vista and using Symantec AntiVirus.

Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

My computer has been acting weird lately. I use the Zune marketplace and Playon for my PS3 and whenever I try to sign in or use the programs they say that they cannot connect to the server or the bandwidth is low even though I'm getting 3mps. Even when I try to download templates for Microsoft word within the program. I can get on the internet just fine though, that's the weird thing. I've tried all of the troubleshooting that various tech support people have walked me through like allowing the programs on my AVG, disabling my firewall, etc and even getting rid of it completely but no luck. I can use the internet just fine and have run all the virus, spyware, and malware programs I have and like normal everything comes out clean. My computer did do something weird the other day though, it wouldn't get on the internet but then I got rid of my proxy and it was fine again but my programs still don't work. I've also called my ISP and there's nothing wrong with the line but whenever I use AT&T's self support tool it says that there is a problem with my connection even though it doesn't show it on their end. It also says that my line state, DSL state, and Ethernet status is down whatever that means.
I am running windows Vista 64 on an HP Pavilion m9340f.
I am OK with computers but not great and would appreciate any help y'all can give,

Thanks!

-i setup the Outlook email account -no problem -but can i now access this mail account without the need to be connected to the Internet? IE just click to open from the desktop tile -sign-in and send mail ?
Reason i ask... If no internet connection is required via a browser for Outlook and for any reason i couldn't connect to the internet, could I still use Outlook email to send/receive emails until whatever problem would be causing a non-connect to the internet .

* i have gmail/aol/roadrunner email accounts but first must launch my Google Chrome browers (or I.E.) inorder to access those accounts ... thanks in advance edythe

A:Does Outlook email require internet connection to use?

No. You just tell it that you do not want to set up an account, when initially setting up the profile. Or set the email to not retrieve at all, unless you retrieve it, and set for leaving the email on the server.

For email from the browser, I use mailto: in Chrome, to allow me to do have my Yahoo email pull up when I need to compose. With Firefox, it can be changed from the hidden advanced properties.

Thunderbird is the same was as outlook, but I like it when using with multiple email providers then Outlook. Not too heavy and very easy to control. You would have to add Sunbird for the Calendar.

Hello everyone,

I am extremely frustrated at this point, so any help would be extremely appreciated. I'm no computer genius, so please be patient with me. The problem I am having all started when I opened a virus on Facebook. It was sent from a friend in the form of a video, however it wasn't sent by him and when I opened it it said I needed to upgrade my flash, which I did, and hence the virus. Upon finding out this was a virus I went online and tried downloading some antivirus software(I had AVG installed, but after performing a complete scan it never picked up on it) anyways, I googled free antivirus scan and tried one of the programs which (dont remember which one) but this opened up a whole new can of worms. When I performed the scan it found some viruses but unless I paid for the software it wouldnt allow me to fix it. So I tried removing this software from my computer and then whenever I went to google a different antivirus software, a popup kept popping up for different types of antivirus software.. I finally was able to get AVIRA installed on my laptop and successfully scanned and removed 14 viruses, I also ran EUSING registry cleaner in safe mode. Now when I start my computer normally, 1.) I cant use any programs which require the internet to work (even though my wireless is connected and working) for example, when I try opening internet explorer, the window opens up and it says connecting, but it just freezes up with a blank screen. Also my Yahoo IM won... Read more

Hi guys, I have just recently upgrade my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7, but since then I haven't been able to install most games.

During installation, each game has a different error message but generally, the problem seems to lie in games that require unpacking large files, such as *.bin. For example, while trying to install Assassin's Creed 3, this message appeared:

An error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -7. ERROR: archive data corrupted(decompression failed)Click to expand...

or

Decompression failed with error code: -12. Bad CRC in the archive data0.binClick to expand...

Please help me, I'm going mad.

Computer's spec:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
RAM: Elixir DDRam 3 2GB x2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX 11
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
BIOS: 9/24/9 Ver: 08.00.15

What I've tried so far:

Updated drivers of graphic card, mainboard, etc.
Ran as Administrator.
Installed in safe mode.
Tried installing these games in another computer (everything's fine)
Reinstalled Windows 7.
Formatted entire HDD, reinstalled Windows XP (now even Windows XP has this problem)
Bought a new HDD

I'm attempting to copy files from one HDD to another. The tens-of-thousands of files in question are in a complex hierarchy system, and windows file copy dialog isn't helping me identify the specific culprits, since many files share names within the hierarchy and the dialog doesn't show the path.

By skipping files to see the many offending files, I see that at least some of them were created by another individual from whom I acquired them. I have already used windows advanced security dialog to grant myself ownership of the parent folder and subfolders and children. Then I used the popular registry addition called Take Ownership Shortcut to attempt to take permission. Neither approach gave any indication of failure, yet I still cannot copy these files.

If it matters, I do not care about taking any action with these files besides copying them to another HDD, because I'll be formatting the source location's drive afterwards. I am at a loss - the message I receive informs me that I need permission from Administrator or my own account name, whomever I gave ownership to. (But that's me, obviously.) It's as though, despite owning the file and being logged into that account, I cannot access the culprit files.

Any assistance from others who've seen this specific dilemma before would be greatly appreciated. This is my livelihood I'm dealing with - if these files are lost, I'm out thousands of hours of work. So, safe suggestions first, please.

Many thanks for your time... Read more

Greetings,

I recently had Internet connection problems. Disconnected the modem and router, shut down the computer and waited for a minute for it to recycle; then rebooted. No luck. Went to network center and found no icons in set-up connections or network adapter. Called provider and was informed problem not on their end and I should go to the local fixit shop for a new network card.

Was informed by fixit shop that it was not a network card problem but corrupt files. The tech at the repair shop uninstalled the AVG Anti-Virus, repaired the corrupt files and sent my PC back. I reinstalled AVG and everything fine. Then the problem started the same exact way with network connection and the icons.

I uninstalled AVG and tried to locate the corrupt files. Tried chkdsk, scannow, and system restore but these functions give the same message that "does not appear to be functioning correctly."[

Thank you for your time.

A few days ago, I began to have some issues connecting various applications to the internet. I've just now decided to ask for help but am somewhat pessimistic about my ability to be helped.

All of the sudden, the majority of my internet-based applications did not work. Internet explorer did not connect, nor did Chrome. My VATSIM server monitor application could not find servers, nor could my mail client, Thunderbird, or Windows Live Messenger 2011. Finally, I was able to get Firefox to work by disabling proxy connections in the settings. The only web-based App to work nonstop was AIM.

I started my troubleshooting with MSN Messenger 2011. When I looked up my error message (800488eb), one of Microsoft's explanations was this:
Files that are required to make a successful Internet connection are corrupted.

This hit me as a very possible scenario due to the strange assortment of problems I'm having.

Microsoft provided the following troubleshooting technique:

7. Reregister SSL security libraries. To do this, click "Start," click "Run," and type in each command below and hit ENTER.

Note: After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before you continue to the next command.
