Internet Explorer 11 Shows " Unable to connect to the site" intermittently after patching done for period Nov 2016 to May 2017? Are there any known issues in any month's patches?

Q: Internet Explorer 11 Shows " Unable to connect to the site" intermittently after patching done for period Nov 2016 to May 2017? Are there any known issues in any month's patches?

We have recently deployed patches from Nov 2016 to May 2017 in out environment.
After these updates, the internet explorer 11 starts working weirdly.
It is intermittently not able to connect to the internet. All the intranet sites are connecting fine.
Has anyone faced similar issue?
A solution would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)
Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

If anybody can solve this, I will cry. I'm not joking. I will break down and cry because I've been struggling with this for 6 months...

So here's the issue in a nutshell:
My internet is connected to a laptop downstairs as well as mine (sometimes but rarely). I often cant connect. It comes up with a box that says "Connect to a Network" and for options, "Troubleshoot problems" or "Tell me more about Internet connection problems". I click "Troubleshoot problems" about 5,000 times a day (no joke) and about 20 of those times it fixes the problem. The other times it does nothing and I have to go shut off the downstairs computer and unplug and plug back in the router about 10 times. Then sometimes is works for 10 minutes or so, and sometimes it doesn't. If I ever do get it working, it never ever stays working.

Most times when the internet does connect, it works for about 30 seconds then shows a yellow triangle warning said with an exclamation mark stating "limited access".

My SGS2 phone connects just fine. So does the laptop downstairs and any other gadgets except for my desktop! This is frustrating as anything!

I've tried various commands from different websites to fix it and nothing works. I've even tried booting in safe mode with networking (NOTHING ELSE RUNNING) and the internet still doesn't connect. It ALWAYS shows the network with full bars, but never connects.

Please, let's put... Read more

Hi Guys,

I let my mate borrow my server yesterday, and I got the internet up and running for him fine, He's installed a few programs since then. They include:

Adobe Photoshop
MSN Live Messenger

and he left the computer on over night and restarted it this morning, and the default gateway has disspaeared and all he seems to get when going onto internet explorer is a "Page can not be displayed" error message.

I tried having a look at it, going in to Start > run > cmd > ipconfig

and it showed his IP and subnet mask, but the default gateway did not appear.

I couldn't figure out how to get it back.
Can you guys help at all ??

Thanks in advance

Just wondering if this is expected behavior, we've just completed upgrade from v1.7 to v1.8 (all gateways successfully updated) however we notice that we are unable to open our console site.  Not sure if this is expected because we intentionally
ran a "partial" update and will not see new data for 3 weeks (- but we'd expect to at least see our splash page for ATA, we don't just a blank white page) or if we need to take further steps.

Recently, a freind brought me their computer to look at. At first I thought it was a straight forward issue relating to some minor spyware or something. But soon I realized it was a full blown infection. There were tons of files in the system32 that I knew were crap and all sorts of viruses/worms like Netsky and Kaboomface (the facebook one).

It seems I cleared it using most of the steps I found one line and on sites like this. But now I have one final issue. Internet Explorer closes as soon as it loads and prompts you to either save the site it was visiting or run the site. <--- puzzling..

I noticed it started prompting me to save or open STS<random number>.tmp and fwlink (this is that site IE often defaults to). These are the two I got the most.

I am not sure what to do at this point as it just seems to be some permanent damage to IE? I even uninstalled and reinstalled IE but got the same result.
Also, the ability to access internet options is locked. But I checked the registry and couldn't find any entry in there thats causing it.

Anyone ever experience something like this? I am going to update the Malware Antibytes and give it another full scan. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any help!

My computer that had been running the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium since early 2009 had become an appliance:  It worked every time it was turned on and it handled every network transaction that came through my DSL line.  I had set the "Windows
Update" program to check for updates periodically, every month or so, and then to inform me when ever any update was available.  I could tell when the "Windows Update" program had been checking for updates, as the CPU usage went up to 100
percent with the used memory amount "sawtoothed" up and down for about 15 to 20 minutes.   The "Windows Update" then would tell me about the available updates and it would ask whether it should load any of those.

This  worked until about January 2016.  At that time, the "Windows Update" CPU usage would stay at 100 percent for more than an hour.  After that, it gradually got worse:  Around June 2016, it held the CPU at 100 percent usage
for about 14 hours.  In August 2016, the CPU is held at 100 percent usage by the "Windows Update" for more than 45 hours with no end in sight.  It did find some updates to load, but it would not load them as the CPU had no time to do that.

"Windows Update" is currently holding the CPU at 100 percent load  this every time the machine is booted up until all of the updates are loaded and it can not do this as the C... Read more

I have Comcast cable internet in Atlanta and use a Motorola SB6121 modem and a Linksys wireless router. The wireless network has been up and running for over a year and I have never had any problems with it and I have never made any changes to it after the initial setup. I connect to the wireless network using two smart phones and an Apple laptop. I live in an apartment so the signal strength is always high and I am never more than one room away from the wireless router.

It was working fine one night like always and then in the morning I was unable to connect to the wireless network. I can still access the internet via wired ethernet cable so I know the internet is online and it is downloading at full speed. I can access the internet via wired connection directly from the modem to the computer. I can also access the internet via wired connection from the modem to the router to the computer. Comcast shows no problems with the connection on their end.

I have purchased all new ethernet cables so I know the cables aren't the problem so I figured the wireless router might have a problem. I bought a new wireless router (Apple Airport Express) and created a new wireless network. I can see the network name is available and it has full signal strength with WPA2 encryption just like it had always been with the old router.

When I try to connect from my phone or laptop it will say "Unable to obtain IP address" and "Network disabled because the internet connection i... Read more

A:Unable to connect to wireless network. "Internet connection is too slow."

if the router is working with a cable connection, then its unlikely to be the modem , unless thats also a router and you are using it for DHCP

you say the modem is connected by cable to the router
and any device connected to the router by cable works perfectly - is that correct

on the old router - have you removed the wireless security and see if you can connect ?

carried out a full power cycle - see below

also it would be worth making a note of the router configuration and do a factory reset on the router and re setup and try again

with a PC connected by a cable direct to the modem can we see an ipconfig /all
now do a power cycle and connect the router
with a PC connected by a cable direct to the router can we see an ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

My daughter got a virus on her laptop and after getting rid of it (I think all the way, it's hard to tell until I can update the anti-virus software) I can no longer connect her laptop to the internet.

I have had a problem in the past with having to reboot the server and all the computers in order for the computers (all of them in the house) to register new ip addresses. Normally, if I have one computer that refuses to connect even after a reboot of the entire system I can connect it thru LAN and it, bang, fixes itself. However, this time it is not working.

Not only will her wireless not connect but neither will the LAN. I have opened the cmd prompt and done an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. Every time I do this I get the message:

"An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I tried the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" and it seemed to work fine.

I also tried the "netsh winsock reset" and it seemed to work fine as well.

I rebooted each time I attempted a fix. Still I am unable to connect to the internet. It says it is connecting locally, but will not connect to the actual internet. When I use the repair option it gives me the same messages over and over that do not work. It always leads back to the IP address.

Here are the specs on her computer and as much information as I can think of. Please let me know what else I can try to get her compu... Read more

About three weeks ago, I built a desktop PC and it ran fine for about a week and a half, but then it would sometimes not start and go into "startup repair", which never succeeded in actually finding a solution. The cause of this was a blue screen error which reported the following:

STOP: c000021a
The Windows Subsystem System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x
The system has been shut down.

This would occur perhaps a third of the time after powering the system on. In order to try and stop this, I opened Windows with "last known good configuration". The computer now does not find any internet connections, even though it is connected via ethernet as before.

How can I fix this issue? Any help is appreciated.

(I do not know if the startup repair issue is fixed, either)

Hello I have an HP Envy 17 Laptop. I've recently been unable to connect to an unsecured wi-fi connection that I have been able to connect to perfectly fine in the past. Since yesterday though, when I tried to connect, I kept getting a message saying, "Windows was unable to connect to blank internet".

If anyone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

A:Windows was unable to connect to "select" Internet

Yes, I do, however, it's not my own connection I'm trying to connect to. Our internet ocassionally goes down, so whenever that happens, we use our neighbors network. I'm guessing they have a router. Another point to be noted is that, my laptop is the only device that is unable to connect to our neighbor's network, my sibling is able to connect his laptop, along with his Ipod Touch, without any problems.

""Unable to Connect"" to internet

I desperately need someone’s help.
I am having great trouble using my internet browsers to connect to the intyernet.
I am on a broadband connection, which is set up on a small home lan. I have 2 computers connected to a hub/switch, and then the modem also connected into the hub/switch to connect straight to the phone jack. So both my computers use the modem to access the net.
***Comp 1 connects to hub/switch
***Comp 2 connects to hub/switch
***Modem connects to hub/switch
***Modem connects to phonejack
Now to my problem assessment;
I am unable to connect to the internet with either of my internet browsers (IE, FIREFOX) as well as via msn or gaim. My MSN diagnosed the problem, and said it had something to do with my key ports. But I have disabled all my firewalls, and closed them. (Zone Alarm, Symantec client firewall, and the default windows SP2 firewall). I can still ping addresses, they reply. So what’s the problem?!?! My internet works but it doesn’t work?!?!?!
My other computer on the same LAN works perfectly fine, using the same connection settings. Like DNS, Default gateway, Subnet mask are all the same. Except for the IP, Of course.
Comp 1 IP is and the other Subnet is and DNS and default gateway is
Also, my bit torrent client is screwed. It no longer connects. I use Bit-comet. Connection error 10061 with all torrents.

This morning my internet stopped working on my computer, and stays at "Limited or No Connectivity".

My computer is hooked up to a router with an ethernet cord, and that router is hooked up to my modem. There is also another computer hooked up by ethernet cord to the router, and I use the wifi a lot for my iPod. Both work fine, it's just the internet on my computer that doesn't seem to work.

So far I've ruled out any problems with the modem, router, ethernet cable and network card. I even went out and bought a new ethernet cable to see if that might fix the problem, but it didn't. Right now I'm in safe mode on my computer and the internet works fine, so the problem doesn't appear to be with my ethernet card.

I've tried unplugging and leaving both the router and modem for a few minutes, changing the cable to a different port on the router, hitting the reset switch on the modem and router, and ipconfig release/renew, but when I try ipconfig /renew it tells me "Unable to Contact Your DHCP Server".

After searching for quite some time and trying various things, my internet still won't work.

Seems there is a problem with adding a search provider via Internet Exlorer gallery as all the links for the search providers are not working. Whether you I try to add google, yahoo, wikipedia or even bing (although bing is the default search provider

saying the page does not belong to microsoft which is really weird since "©2015 Microsoft" is written at the bottom of the page. I got other colleagues including some at different locations and they seem to have the same problem.
I found a resolution to the problem on my own though and it looks like everything may have been moved to a different webpage. If you go via http://www.iegallery.com/AddonsIE7 instead, all the links seem to work just fine and I was able to add google

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi Guys, any ideas how to access my external hard drive [TOSHIBA MK3029GACE] device manager can see it but it does not appear in disc management.

I use this HDD perfectly in my car HDD player. But when I try to connect it to my Laptop, it does not show up in disk management.

Please check the attached screen shot..

Thanks for the help....

A:HDD shows in "Device Manager" but not in "DiskPart"or" Disk Management

Specs show that drive has a ATA-6 interface (P-ATA, or IDE). How are you connecting this drive to your laptop? Does the laptop have a PATA or SATA connection? Does it use an adapter?

I've inherited a Windows 2008 R2 server (no snickering and let's stay on topic please).

It's on a closed, flat network.

There's a webserver elsewhere in this closed, flat network.

All the other hosts in this network can go to the webserver and see the landing page.

EXCEPT the W2K8 box.

On the W2K8 box:

I've turned off IE ESC
Made sure port 8000 is allowed through the Advanced Firewall
Added to
the trusted sites
I can indeed ping
* telnet 8000 just hangs

When I go to, it throws this error, "Internet Explorer cannot display
the webpage"

What am I missing?

I am opening "My Computer" shortcut from the desktop, in the taskbar, the pinned "shows desktop" is getting highlighted. I restarted and stuff, still the same. Does anyone know why?

A:When I click Windows Explorer, it shows on "show desktop" shortcut

Hello, in the right side of the Win7 taskbar is a built-in show desktop shortcut. Just wondering why you have a pinned one?

Since my free upgrade to Windows 10, I see the message "Working on it..." whenever I try to open My Computer/File Explorer. It stays this way for a few minutes and doesn't show the drives during this period. If try to click anywhere or close the window, then the window switches to "Not Responding".
Other problems that I am seeing seem to be related (or not) are:
1. Right-click menu takes a LONG time to appear when clicked on an icon.
2. The "Open File" and "Save As" menu from inside any program also takes a LONG time to open (just like File Explorer). If I do try to click or try to close it, I again see the "Not Responding" message.
I've been try to get rid of this problem since the upgrade, but no luck yet.
Would anyone have a fix for it?

I've been using both Firefox and Hotmail for a long time without a problem, but for the past couple of days whenever I try to access Hotmail I get a very long message entitled "Web Site Certified by an Unknown Authority."

It goes on to state "Unable to verify identity of cb1.msn as a trusted site," and says that one reason may be that the site I've accessed is no longer the one it purports to be, but is instead a hacker. (This, after entering "http://www.hotmail.com/")

Furthermore, although the box gives the options "okay," "cancel" and "help" at the bottom of the dialog, clicking on any of them only results in looping back to the same box. Clicking on Back, Home or anything else has no effect-- nothing changes. In order to get rid of the dialog box, I have to close the browser (Firefox) using Ctrl+Alt+Del.

If I then reopen Firefox, everything seems to be okay-- UNLESS I try Hotmail again. Then I'm back to all of the above.

I tried e-mailing the Hotmail Webmaster about this, which I figured would be useless and it was.

I've now notified most of my Hotmail contacts to use my Yahoo! address, but I still have lots of stuff stored in Hotmail, some of which is pretty important.

Anybody know what's up with this? Thanks a bunch!

P.S. Forgot to mention that I'm running Windows 98SE with a high-speed DSL connection through an Actiontec GT 701-WG modem that has its own router/firewall. ... Read more

Hi everyone,

I need some help with process explorer. I'm in Hungary now
My process explorer has 86 processes, when I activated VT checking, it showed "The operation timed out". It rarely succeeds. I tested it with my main PC, w10 x64, and also in a windows 7 32bit VM (which has much less processes)

The only solution is to use a VPN and change the location to anywhere else other than Hungary. In this case, it rarely fails

What is the problem here? How can I fix it without changing my VPN?
Thank you so much

Beneath the quick access list in navigator, all I have is 'desktop'. Everything else is under that. But all the pics I've seen of windows 10 show 'this PC' as the top level link. I would much prefer that. "desktop' ends up being twice in the tree, and removable media twice as well. Well, actually desktop is right inside my user folder too!

Anybody know a fix? It's impossible to search for, as all the search terms bring up much more common problems.

I wish I could just decide in a simple way what is shown in this pane and in what order!!!

A:Explorer pane shows desktop as root, instead of "this PC"

I unpinned the File Explorer icon from the Taskbar then created a new shortcut to My PC and pinned it to the Taskbar.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

I have been facing this problem for a long time.
In Win7, I leave IE11 (version 11.0.17) open (at various sites) and after some hours the page disappears (at some sites) and a message is shown:
"We were unable to return you to <site name>.
Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem."

I already know this:
This problem occurs because of an issue with Java Version 6 Update 22 and Java Version 6 Update 23 that was exposed by recent changes in the Internet Explorer 9 rendering engine.

But the problem is I uninstalled Java a long time ago!

What can I do?
(I don't want to reset IE settings)
(I don't want to disable the addons one by one until I find the culprit)

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I have Windows XP Home with Outloook Express (OE)

For some unknown reason, intermittantly, my previous OE "sent items" change a block of emails to the date of the next month, that is, a block of emails that were 1/Nov/2010, 2/Nov/2010, etc., become 1/Dec/2010,2/Dec/2010, etc., and this causes current sent emails to seemingly dissapear, until you realise they are bundled back behind the date of the incorrect next month that has been incorrectly generated on previous emails.

Has anyone come across this peculiar anomally, found what causes it and how to fix it?

PS I just noticed the same thing is happening in my OE "Drafts" section - I have a block of November drafts that have been "post dated" to next month (Dec)

However, out of the blue my laptop stopped connecting to the wifi at location A and B, and still connects fine at location C. Other laptops and phones still connect fine to the wifi at location A and B, there's been no change in the software on my laptop since before the problem and I've run a system restore too to back when it was working, with no luck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter driver, also cleared my saved network locations and tried to connect again. Any other suggestions?

I know this was an old post but I am currently having what appears to be the exact same problem, although running Win2000 on an older (PII) machine. IE6 simply appears to be slow. I've disabled protection added via Spywarblaster, Spybot, etc, and deleted all history, temp files, etc.
Once a site is up it appears to run normally., Download speeds are normal (hi-speed Cable). When opening IE6 it takes over a minute to open the page, all the while the indication in the bottom left is "Finding Site:" and whatever the address is, even something as simple as www.google.com.
Unsure what has caused this relatively recent slowdown. Any help?

Started last week, all working fine and suddenly all browsers (IE6 & IE7 & Firefox) take forever on requesting any webpage. Running xp on broadband 3mb. Have multiple computers on same network and perfect speeds on them. PC in question is fast and new.

When any page is requested the browsers take about 60 seconds to request the page. In the corner it says "finding site" or "waiting for". Once it starts to download the page flys up instantly. Same with all pages. A bit fast obviously second time on any page.

Connection is fine speed wise, once anything starts downloading it goes instantly to full speed. Network monitor shows it reaching & maintaing full speed on downloads (tested by downloading media player) but very long pauses between requests for websites. Network speed is fine between this computer and others. The computer pings fine.

So far I have, Ran ad-adware and norton scans ( all clear )
Cleared all caches and temporary files
Uninstalled firefox and IE 7 and reinstalled IE7
Changed broadband connection to USB and other ethernet connections
Released and renewed ip
Switched to fixed IP and back to automatic
Enabled and disabled proxy settings
Ran repair tool on connection
disabled all security (Nortons and Windows, normally use just Nortons firewall)
Set internet default security to low
Run network wizard to create new network

Cannot find any articles related to such a problem online. As mentioned I feel security isn't a prob... Read more
