Turn off Cortona's "Memory List." (Build 1803)

Q: Turn off Cortona's "Memory List." (Build 1803)

Hey Guys,

I have a local account as a default on my machine. I disabled the Timeline feature, no problem. But, no matter what build 1803 has this "Pick Up Where You Left Off" as a part of Cortona/Search and it shows a list of Recent activity things you do on your computer. Even non-related Microsoft tasks. I have attached an image to illustrate. Is there any way to turn this off, and just use Cortona like the search in previous search builds?

Apparently, turning off timeline doesn't make a difference to Cortona.

Preferred Solution: Turn off Cortona's "Memory List." (Build 1803)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I solved this on my own. Thread going up shortly.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

I have encountered the message..."Failed to build the list of regular subfolders under..etc". I t arose when I was trying to assist a friend, and the history is that he had a PC with a single 80GB PATA hard drive, with XP and a separate data partition.
We added, in a dual boot arrangement, W7 Home, and relocated My Documents to the Data partition. He then had the use of this partition for storage and opening of documents when using either operating system.

Recently space became a problem, so a second PATA 60GB drive was installed. When trying to relocate My Documents from the existing data partition to the new drive, we got the "Failed....." message. We then cut all from the old partition and pasted in it the new drive, so that if we tried to return to the default location there would not be a problem of trying to fit too much back to the C drive. Then tried Restore Default - same failure message.

The process of relocation seems similar to the first method in your tutorial on Restore the default location. My questions are:
1.Does the arrangement of having the data location for two operating systems cause this?
2.Would method 2 work?
3. Would a repair-install return the location to the C drive - although involving quite a bit of time.

I am assuming that when the folder location is back in C, It can then be relocated to the new drive, and new saved files would then all go there.

Would very much appreciate advice.

A:"Failed to build the list of regular subfolders under..etc"

I see that this was moved to a new thread 5 days ago, but I haven't been able tom find that thread. However

This problem is now solved. It did not involve any of the three questions I posed. The answers to these are
1. That two operating systems shared the same folder location for My Documents did not cause this problem.
2. It was not first necessary to try method 2
3. Did a repair install on a test machine with W7 – the change of location of the My Documents folder was treated as a user setting, and the default location was not reset.
The following is what was done. The start point was a setup with two drives, in the first there were two OSs, and a data partition E, and the second was an empty drive, J.
The first step was to create a folder My Documents in J. Then cut all folders/files in E and paste into the new folder in J.
In Windows Explorer, expanded Documents and then right clicked My Documents, selected Properties, Location, Restore Default and Apply. When the option to move all contents opened, selected No instead of Yes.
Clicked OK, and the location of the folder changed back to C,
Right clicked again, and then chose Properties, Location and the Move. Browsed to J, and clicked Apply, OK.
All the existing content (already) in J was accessible, and new items were saved there.
The E partition was deleted, and the resulting unallocated space merged into C

The things i've tried include; everything in the following - FIX Blank or Empty List in Vista Turn Windows Features On or Off (OptionalFeatures.exe), sfc /scannow, reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty, and making sure Windows Modules Installer is running and set to manual. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions, thanks!

I really hope someone can help on this.

New build. MSI H81i mITX MoBo with Celeron G1840 (Socket 1150) and 1 stick of Corsair 4gb DDR3-1333 memory. 300watt PSU. One 500gb HDD and 1 DVD drive (both sata-3)

When I switch on the computer, all I get is 3 long beeps. No display. Nothing.

MSI uses the AMI BIOS, and according to their website: "3 beeps - Base 64K memory failure - bad memory".

Memory is fine (brand new and tested in another build). I removed and reseated it to be sure. Memory is in DIMM1 (of 2) closest to CPU.

There are separate Beep Codes for "memory", so I'm wondering what "Base 64K memory" is? If it were the CPU, that has its own Beep code as well, so I don't think it's the cpu cache.

I'm trying to build a HTPC for Mother's Day, so time is of the essence. Please help! TIA.

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

I have a default install of IE 11 running on Win 10 build 1803 which cannot save any favorites or do any kind of bookmark functionality. IE is running fine this only occurs when attempting to create a bookmark. It gives this pop-up error:
"the process cannot be accessed because it is being used by another process".
There are NO IE PLUGINS or ADD-ONS. All are disabled or uninstalled.
There are no errors in the Windows Event Viewer.
I have run SysInternals ProcMon to see if there are any file access denied messages, there are NONE.
I have run SysInternals Process Explorer to see what, if any, processes are locking IExplore.exe, I see NONE.
I have gone through each Process running and shut them down one by one with no results. Still receive the same error.
If I attempt to save a bookmark I get the above error, then 2 bookmarks are created, one works, one does not and is blank.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING THAT MICROSOFT HAS RECOMMENDED, from resetting IE settings to turning it off in Windows features and back on again. The usual support fixes do not work.
If anyone has some suggestions on how to determine where this error message is coming from I'm all ears.

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/756093-flash-drive-s-active-light.html

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). AS the last discussion degraded into useless questions about hardware and other OS's let's get a confirmation that someone out there actually has a flash drive that turns its activ... Read more

A:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

I just had the Windows Update version 1709 Build 16299.71 automatically downloaded and installed on three of my Windows 10 computers today 5-9-18 - I assume the "Spring Update" version 1803 will be pushed out automatically next, right?

I realize that the "Spring Update" Version 1803 OS Build 17134.5 to 17134.48 can be manually downloaded now but what is your best guess when it will be pushed out automatically to it's customers as I'd rather wait for it to be downloaded and installed automatically rather than me manually downloading it and installing it. This this "Spring Update" will be pushed out automatically soon?

A:Best guess when "Spring Update" ver 1803

It varies,

When I got Anniversary Update, it took five months. When I got Creator's Update it took about a month and a half for it to come through automatic updates. I would say 1-4 months. It depends on the age of your computer, and how many reports Microsoft gets about the new build errors. They always do the newest computers first. You have to look at the age of your computer, and the level of success or failure around the world of a new build update.

I would like to add the "D" drive letter to the drop down menu of the "Send To" button.
Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you very much.

A:add a "drive letter" to the "send to" drop down list

Place a shortcut to the drive (or folder) you want to be the target in c:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\SendTo folder. That is the directory from which the Send To menu is loaded. I'm looking at a win2000 system and the XP location may be slightly different but it's somewhere in there. If you put the shortcut in the "Default User" folder then whenever you create a new user, that user will have the same option.

NOTE: If I do a "list volume" in a non recovery console command prompt the drive letters are shown as they are shown in disk management.

A:Drive letter in "list volume" WRE is different from "My Computer" Fix?

I believe that is normal since the recovery console assigns letters based on which partition it sees first. It is not aware of the fact that the System Reserved partition doesn't get a drive letter assigned as does Windows.

I first thought it was the temperature - Memtest95 and GPUtemp said otherwise.

So I started testing the RAM (taking one DIMM out) with Memtest86- It passed 4 cycles, so I shut the PC down and put the other DIMM in.

When I turned the PC on again, there was no signal sent to my screen, and none to my keyboard (and the HDD light on the front of the case did not start blinking like usual). The fans were running, so I figured something might be wrong with the DIMMs I put in. I removed the graphics card and plugged the screen into the motherboard.

Now the screen gets a signal, background lighting starts up, and then it shuts down to hibernation again. This repeats itself until the machine is shut down manually.

I got no idea what to do.

System specs: http://pastebin.com/DQwejZLx
I can not post the Minidump folder, since the PC can't start and I did not back it up. Sorry.

Thank you for your help.

I am running Windows 7 in 32 bit mode. When I go to create a folder in documents or on the desktop I right click and select "New". This opens a dialog list of functions. Everything is there but "Folder". What am I missing? Is there a Windows update missing? Is this normal for Windows 7???? There is a box at the top of the Documents page that says New Folder. When I select this box nothing happens?????? Where do New Folders go????

A:"Folder" does not appear in the dialog list when selecting "New"

The menu you are talking to is called the "Shell Context Menu", there is not a built in windows feature to change the contents of this Menu as it is generated from the registry.

go to NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities and get "ShellMenuView" and/or "ShellExView" which provides a simple interface for viewing and editing entries on this menu. The tools do not need to be installed, you just run them!

Actually I found a way to step back, but I can't seem to find it consistently. How do I do it?

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Not much in your log, but you should have a security analyst look it over

In the meantime, Run the System File Checker to see if it resolves your IE issue.

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

I recently had a virus on my computer. During the time of cleaning and removing infected files my computer came up with a error message that I can't seem to find help on. When my computer starts up, the first thing that pops up is an error message stating that there is a rundll32.exe - Application Error. The message says, The instruction at "0x010017f1" referenced memory at "0x01000003c". The memory could not be "read".

I have downloaded and run just about every program that I can find to attempt to fix this error. I have searched my computer and registry for any of the numbers in the error message with no results. I have installed and run multiple antivirus and maleware removal programs, but have not been able to remove this problem. I sure hope you can help me with this final problem in cleaning up my computer issues.

Thanks in advance for all of your assistance.

Hi Chuck McD and welcome to TSF.

When did you first notice the issue? Is it the same when you start in Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly when starting up your computer and choose Safe Mode from the options. It could very well be a program that you have recently installed that caused the issue.

Geekgirl had some good advice on this forum for another user that may help here. Can you try some of the advice that she gave and report back

I would also suggest you start a new thread in the ' Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help' section and give then all the details they require to help you as you had a prior infection that may not have been fully resolved.

Hi there,

Is your computer a desktop or laptop computer? What is the brand/model of your computer may I ask? Please provide your computer specs when you get a chance. By knowing your computer specs, we would definitely be able to troubleshoot your computer issue more efficiently. Have you installed any software or updates recently?

Try this, download "MEMTEST86+" and put the program onto a bootable media(e.g. CD). Afterwards, reboot your computer and boot your computer to the Memtest86+ CD. Then, follow the on-screen instructions, and scan your computer memory for any errors.

Did this error come up all of a sudden? The error titles "Application Error", possibly a program error conflict somewhere.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I am running Windows 8 64 bit

Apparently I scanned my system using full system scan (AVAST) and left my computer on thinking it would take for many hours. When I came back, my computer automatically shutdown because it was left standby for about 4 hours. I don't know if the scan was finished. When I try to boot, the screen gets stuck on "please wait" screen or "configuring windows. Do not turn off your computer".

I already tried going to System Recovery Options screen, then going to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, but I tried everything there and still the issue persists even when I tried to boot in safe mode. I tried going to command prompt, and type sfc/ scannow but it says it can't scan right now. I also tried chkdsk / R but it says the same. I don't know how to run cmd as administrator from the System Recovery Options.

So now I tried to use system restore but I am stuck to the windows logo for about 1 and half hour. I don't know if I should wait for this or it is already stuck. In other forums I read, they used system restore with only the "C:" disk group connected. Should I also do this?

I am thinking to remove AVAST or somehow disable it.

Please help me.

When I look into the "Performance" tab of my TaskManager then there are the following values:

Hmm, What is the difference between available and free space?
Shouldn't this be the same?

What means cache?

From my point of view there should be a value "occupied by running prgms" and "free".

A:Diff.between "available" and "free" physical memory?

Available is the only one that matters. Available shows what is capable of being used by Programs. Without paging other lower priority processes out of memory. It is a combination of both Cache and Free.

I recently received a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad P70, ordered with the basic 8GB of memory. I also ordered an additional 8GB of memory from Crucial, purportedly compatible with the P70. The P70 has four SODIMM memory sockets and can support up to 4x16GB=64GB total non-ECC DDR4 2133MHz storage with its 6th-generation i7-6700HQ/6820HQ Intel CPUs. It also can come with Xeon E3-1505M processor, which can handle 4x16GB=64GB of ECC memory.

I installed the 8GB of Crucial memory into one of the three remaining available memory sockets, not seeing anything in the documentation that it must be in a specific "paired" slot for best performance. In other words, the Lenovo memory came installed in what was slot #3 (located under the keyboard), with what I'm guessing is actually "paired" adjacent slot #1 next to it (also located under the keyboard). But I installed my additional 8GB of memory in what turned out to be slot #4, in an instantly accessible location on the underside of the laptop gotten to immediately after removing the bottom cover. The second adjacent "paired" (to #4) slot on the underside I assume would have been slot #2.

So I ended up with 8GB of memory in each of [what I believe to be] UN-PAIRED slots #3 and #4.

The net result is performance behavior shown by CPUZ as "single" rather than "dual" as I would have expected and certainly wanted to obtain.

The question is why? Is the issue that I didn't add the second 8G... Read more

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more
