I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Two Basic Question

[1] I don't see one, specifically. Right-click and choose Call contact. I don't see anyway, even customizing the toolbar since putting a "Call Contact" button just provides a drop-down button anyway. Seems this would require scripting, and you'd have to decide whether work or home would be the number you'd choose to call when you hit the shortcut key. You can also try this website: http://www.outlookcode.com/

[2] Tools-->Options, Other tab. Advanced Options button. Choose "Startup in this folder" to be Contacts.

Hi. Not sure how I should ask this, but please let me know what you need to know other than what I say below, thanks!

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook that they issue us from school that we can take home. At school, I can connect fine. However, when I'm at home it's a bit different. Once I'm connected at home, I'll open up Firefox and the loading icon just sits there forever, and all of the sudden, whatever I'm trying to load will come up quickly, as fast as it does on the desktop computer we have that connects wirelessly fine.

This period of regular-speed internet will only last for around 5 seconds or so, everything loads fine in that time. Right after though, it resumes doing nothing and things will pretty much not load at all until that 5 second period decides to come back. It's really useless and I hope you can help me find a solution.

If you need any specs or anything, please post and let me know. Thanks in advance.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

Have you tried to do a system restore to before the problem occurred?
If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
For wireless connection issues, have you removed all the stored wireless network profiles and then searched for the network?

I intend to purchase a new PC, my 2nd & although I appreciate I must reload my software, operating system & ISP, I do not know how to transfer the stored info on my hard drives. I am worried that by being a "PC inadequate" I might lose the lot!! Please help.

A:New PC - Basic Question!

One way would be to temporarily load your present hard drive as a secondary on the new machine and transfer things as you want.

The other is to use XP's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard found in the System Tools. It can be used on both the old and new computers.

If there are specific things you want to save, there may be more explicit directions for them.

Also, software like Acronis TrueImage allows you to image your entire hard drive onto CD-RW's and then browse the image for files after the old machine is long gone.

I want the DSL access on both computers, but don't need wireless on the desktop. Am pretty sure it is too old to have a card, and don't want to have to buy one if there is a way to avoid it. I found myself with some free time today so I decided I might aswell start learning C++. Needless to say i got stuck at the first error i encountered.

int y = 7;
1 cout "\n";
cout << x + y << " " << x * y;
2 cout "\n";

}
While trying to compile the above code in ms visual c++ i got 2 errors saying that i should have a semi colon in points 1 and 2. Why is this and is it correct? I took the code straight from the tutorial.

A:Very basic c++ question

You're missing an operator.
Code:

#include <iostream.h>
int main()
{
int x = 5;
int y = 7;
cout << "\n";
cout << x + y << " " << x * y;
cout << "\n";
return 0;
}
but why code extra lines when this
Code:

#include <iostream.h>
int main()
{
int x = 5;
int y = 7;
cout << "\n" << x + y << " " << x * y << "\n";
return 0;
}
does the same thing?

My pc was continually shutting down so I did a reinstall of win 7 home basic 64bit. Prior to this I bought a seagate ext hard drive and borrowed a wd external hard drive. I backed up my c drive to both using the seagate acronis and the wd smartware software.
Using the seagate drive I recovered the files to a new g drive partition on my hard © drive and this shows a volume of 200+gb yet when I click on this drive the folders are only showing a few thousand kb of information and I cannot access any of my original files.
What am I not understanding please?

A:Basic question

When you say you can't access any of your original files what is the error message that you are getting?
Is it possible you have hidden files? Enable viewing of hidden files?
When it says a volume of 200+ GB this could mean the total capacity of the partition and not your files. If you right click on the partition and click properties it will show you the used space versus the free and total space.

Howdy, I'm new to the forums and am not sure if this is the proper topic to post this in. I've been having some trouble with an email account that is associated with a particular game I frequently play. I've regularly scanned after each attempted hack or hijacking attempt and am not sure if my computer has ever been secure since these attempts. This problem has been persistent for nearly a month or so. I've scanned with malwarebytes a few hours ago and it hasn't turned up anything suspicious. I guess my general question is if my computer is possibly infected that previous scans have shown nothing suspicious. Another thing worth noting is that the only email that has been successfully taken over is the one that is linked to that game. I've created more than my fair share of back up email accounts and those have been left alone. I was also curious if I could get some help in determining if I have any programs that are not necessary for my computer to run properly.

Sure, you most likely be able to select whatever files you want off the disk and email them. Are you sure you are going to be able to know which files are the images you want to send?

Also, depending upon the type of file and if the viewing software is exclusive to the vendor that made the disk, the image may not be viewable without the viewing software on the CD as well. We don't have enough info here to tell you anything specific.

But you asked if it was possible. Yes, it is.

ok i uped thee fsb on my athlon xp 2400 from 133 to 140 at 1.65V times 15. when i try to get 144x15, my comp crashes. i asked my friend this but he doesnt know cause he doesnt use AMD cpu's, but when do i lower the multiplier and up the vcore. i mean, how will i know when to do these?

A:basic question about oc'ing

Ah man be careful! You cant fry your cpu by lowering, uping, chaning, the multiplier or FSB on your cpu in the BIOS, but you can and easily fry your cpu by making the vcore too high. the vcore is the voltage going do the cpu. You'll notice its real fine, as the selection only ranges from like 1.6 to 1.8.

CPUs all vary, some can overclock more than others, some less then others. Yours (cpu) is crashing when you make it too high because it cannot handle the speed, it may just be the cpu not liking it, or your cooling may be insufficient.

The fsb speed in your bios shows up as 133MHz and up/lower. Well you have DDR RAM, which is double data rate, and so PC2700 ram, which runs at 333MHz, shows up as 166 in the bios. Notice 166x2 = 266mhz, since its double data rate/DDR ram.

To get the speed of the cpu, its FSB (times)/x/* Multiplier.

133(fsb)*12.5(multiplier) gives you 1662.50MHz

You can make your cpu go faster, by raising the multiplier, raising fsb, or both.

Lets say your stock fsb is 266MHz, and your ram is PC2100. That means your ram runs at 266MHz stock. The ram operates at the same speed as the front side bus. When you raise the fsb to 270mhz (from 133 to 135 in the bios), your overclocking the cpu, and the RAM! so your cpu may be able to take the overclock, and the temps may be fine, but because of your ram, it may not be able to take the overclock, and thats making the system unstable/crash.

So what some people do to get around that, is they ke... Read more

A:a basic question

Hiya

I'll choose the Newsgroups one

Okay, first off, do you have a paid newsserver that came with your ISP or not. If you do, then can guide you in the setting up. If not, its easy anyway

For the free one:

Go here http://freenews.maxbaud.net/ and type in anything in the Search Box at the bottom. eg virus or whatever you want. Next it will come up with a list of newsservers. Click on one of them and your Outlook Express will open. It will say you are not Subscribed to any groups. Do you want to download.
you do, so go for it. If you get a NNTP box popup saying error, then this server has timed out or has too many connections.
If this happens, just rightclick the server in the left and choose Remove Account.

However, you may find one that works and downloads groups. make sure that when you were in the above site, you checked to see if you can post or not. If you cannot and you want to, you can go here http://groups.google.com/groups?group=*&hl=en

For the above link, copy/paste into your Search bar as the *&hl=en gets missed off
and search for your group and post. You will have to join (free)

Now, to keep it running okay, you need to ensure that the timeout is set to 5 mins.

rightclick the server on the left and choose Properties. Advanced tab and move the slider bar to 5mins. Apply

Also, Tools | Options. Read. Under News, it has how many headers to get. Put that to 1000.

If you have any problems let me know.

As to the pics, have you moving onto onto ... Read more

It's complicated, and difficult to figure out. There's too many variables, and many XP versions have no documentation that I can find. This subject is currently my primary interest: How to reinstall XP on a computer that was either shipped without a reinstall disk, or the disk has become damaged or lost, without having to pay an exorbitant price for the disk.

First, you need to know what was installed. XP Pro or Home, what service pack level and what OEM (Dell, HP, etc...) or custom-built (retail, OEM, upgrade) etc....

You also need to know your Product ID, and have it written somewhere safe, because that is the only thing you have that is of value. When you lose that, you've lost your legal copy of XP and you'll have to purchase another.

That product ID will only work with certain XP disks. Which disk(s) is the primary issue. There is some interchageability, but there's not comprehensive documentation that I can find; some kind of "roadmap" that you can look at and say "I have this kind of XP, and so I need that kind of XP disk."

Finding a disk that will work with your PID is the goal.

On the Desktop side you can make the system feel more like Windows 7 by using a software that enables the Start Button. See this tutorial:

I have Comcast as my ISP and use their modem for cable TV, internet and phone service. I have a Netgear router with wired connections to two Dell Win 7 desktop pcs and a wireless connection to a Win 7 laptop.

I recently installed a small app called "Who is on my wifi"and on running its scan it detects my pc, my daughters pc, the router and the laptop.

I guess I lack fundamental knowledge of wifi networks and am confused by the scan findings.

When I first installed my Dell pc, it automatically detected the router and connected wirelessly. I later was informed that better download speeds would result if I used an ethernet wired connection to the Netgear router. Some time later my daughter installed her new Dell pc and I connected it to the router with an ethernet wired connection. So both desktop pcs now have wired ethernet connections.

Here is my dumb novice question: if the two desktop pcs have wired ethernet connections why is the "Who is on my wifi" scan showing them to be wifi devices? Is it possible that the two desktop pcs are somehow still connecting to the internet wirelessly despite the fact that they have wired ethernet connections?

Any insights would be appreciated,

Frank

Hi
I've tried to find the answre to this, so far unsuccessfully. When you open your IE browsing history:
1. If a site is there, does it mean it has been intentionally opened? As in, someone clicked on a link, or typed in the URL?
2. If under a site there some wmv files listed, does that mean that they were actually downloaded, or viewed?
Thanks!

A:basic history question

I really didn't know the answer to these questions either, so I did a bit of experimenting.

It appears a site (or page) does not show in history until it has been actually visited. In other words, clicking on a link or typing in a URL doesn't seem to register in history if the user clicks 'Back' for example before anything is displayed. Once anything is displayed, the page is in history even if it does not complete download. "Behind main page Popups" are registered in history even if you do not actually view them (e.g. close IE without viewing popup). So, in answer to your 1st question, I would say the page has been viewed at least partially whether intentional or not, though popups might be the exception.

As for your 2nd question, I tried clicking on a wmv link but stopping Windows Media Player before it actually started playing the video. That link did not show up in history. I also tried downloading (saving) the video instead of playing it. If I interrupted the download, it would not show in history. I had to let the download finish. So, my take is if a wmv shows in history, it has been viewed or saved, probably intentionally.

Now, if your purpose in asking these questions is to discipline someone , I'd be careful with only one or two history sites. Personally, I would have to see several days of suspect activity before I would confront the individual - at least from some official position.

So my questions are;
1.can i perform a clean install(i.e boot from DVD)

A:Basic activation question

1) Yes - but you must have an activated and validated qualifying OS installed on the HD first
2) No - Win8 *requires* that the qualifying OS is installed - but if you boot from the DVD it will offer to format the drive as part of teh upgrade process.

Win8 has some pretty hefty self-repair capability, so hopefully you won't need to reinstall.

Hello,

Have been using email for quite long now. However just wanted to ask that what timestamp exactly is applied on the email messages which are sent out via IMAP/SMTP. Is it the time stamp on the local PC from which it is sent or is it the time stamp of the servers which are responsible for routing the email message.

Just asking that if in case the time on the local PC is incorrect and set to a date earlier than the current date, the would it affect the email being sent. If the email carries a timestamp of past then would the SMTP server accept and handle it, and if does arrive in the receipeints email box, then it would appear on a past date and hence would not be shown in the top of the list sorted via latest messages on the top.

Thanks for answering.

A:Basic Email Question

I guess the short answer to your question is yes. But, note that all the servers that touch/forward the mail apply their own time stamps. View a full header and read from bottom up to see the servers and times involved.

Usenet Gurus -

I have a basic understanding of how newsgroups work, but one question I have not been able to confirm...

When you access the newsgroups and read messages or view binaries, is any of the full text of the message or the .jpg viewed, etc. stored on the computer anywhere? Basically, I would like to know if there is a Newsgroup cache that stores actual files (other than which newsgroups I viewed, read/unread message numbers, headers, etc)? When I am done reading newsgroups, are the messages I viewed stored anywhere on my hard drive if I have not manually 'saved' the message/image.

If this question is newsreader dependent, I typically use Free Agent or Xnews to read.

Thanks in advance.

D.

A:Basic Newsgroup Question

Hi ddelmoni

I use Outlook Express to access the newsgroups.

The newsgroup file reflects what is currently on the server, though if I wanted, I could save that file and restore it on another computer or at a later date.
I just have to be careful not to be online so that the server is unable to update the file.

I usually copy/move the newsgroup posts I want to keep to another folder in Outlook Express.

If I unsubscribe to a newsgroup that file is usually eliminated from the directory.

I have not used Free Agent or Xnews, so I do not know how it saves the files.

Are you wanting to access some old newsgroup posts?

Hi-
I've been meaning to figure this out for a long time. My wife & I use different laptops - she uses VISTA and I use XP. The problem we have (on both) is that when we proceed to shut down the systems at night we are presented with options such as Sleep, Hibernate, etc...and Shut Down. We just want the screen to default to "Shut Down". However, the default selection is "Sleep". This may seem like a petty issue, but when we accidently just hit the enter key without toggling down to the "Shutdown" option (this happens a lot, especially when we are tired) we run into all sorts of headaches - we really just want to "Shut Down". Can you help us with fixing this ? I realize this is the Vista forum, but, as mentioned, I have this problem on XP as well.

I recently found a Keylogger Trojan on my computer yesterday. I ran Spyware Doctor and it picked it up, I selected the Trojan and deleted it. I re-ran Doctor again to double check and it was clean
Then I went to all the sites and changed my password, so the information he got wouldn't be the same.
The hacker that sent me the Trojan told me online that if I clicked on my recycle bin, it would come into my computer and if I shut down the computer I was screwed. Me being curious did this and this is how the Trojan got into my computer.

My question is, Is there a possibility that I can get the same Keylogger Trojan if I re-click on the Recycle Bin??

I know you guys help a lot of people out and my question isn't an emergency but I would like an answer

How do I access "FindWhat" for purpose of the query (this is for a Domino server but that shouldn't matter)

document.location="http://notes-c02/webapps/phonebk.nsf/ByName?SearchView&Query=" + document.Forms[1].FindWhat.Value

What should document.Forms[1].FindWhat.Value be?

I have a Belkin F5D6230-3 Wireless Cable Gateway Router. It has 1 Port for the Cable modem connection and 3 additional Lan ports. I'm assuming that limits me to a maximum of three wired or wireless client connections. If I get a Wireless Access Point and connect it to one of these three available ports, will I then be able to attach multiple wireless clients to my network. Sorry if this is obvious, but I am new to wireless but benefitting trmendously from this forum.

Thanks,
MIke

Hi,

I'm trying to zip a folder on my desktop containing jpegs using winzip. The folder before zipping is about 12mb. i have right clicked the folder and chose winzip-add to zip file. I chose maximum compression. When i looked at the size of my zipped folder that to was showing 12mb.

how do I zip this folder so that it will reduce its size to the original unzipped one? i've only used winzip in the past for unzipping files. this is my first time at trying to zip.

Thanks

New to DSL here AND wireless. Been on dialup since the beginning of internet (- 80's) so I am used to just running a phone jack to wherever I needed a computer. I just went with Bellsouth's DSL. (lying thieves - got their $58 a month service & they charge me $80.. but I digress). They sent me one router which I have hard wired to the ehthernet outlet on my old desktop HP. Now I realize that I need to get a laptop for backup, etc. Assuming that the laptop will come with the 802.11 wireless stuff, would my best bet be to buy a couple of the ethernet tranciever things .... One to plug into the eternet port on the router & another to plug into the ethernet port on the desktop? I live alone, so i'm not really trying to start a LAN for a family. I just want to be able to use the laptop in different areas of my house / still use my old dsktop PC & do it the easiest, cheapest, least likely to give me problems. Thanks.

A:really basic DSL/ethernet question

Not real clear as to what question you are asking!

If you decide to go with a laptop, most come with wireless adapters built in, but not all. To have this work with your existing setup, you will need to have a wireless router. You didn't state if the router you received from Bellsouth was wireless or not.

This would allow for roaming capabilities in your home provided you don't try to stray too far from the router.

First of all, thanks for having this excellent site to solve my PC problems! Anyway, I have been running Norton Systemworks 2003 for 2 years now but my subscription expires on 6/23/05. I was going to get Norton 2005 until I read all of the bad reviews. It appears that I should download the free AVG antivirus according to the forums. Is this the right way to go or do you recommend another antivirus program? I am only concerned about an antivirus program. I didn't use much of the other Norton utilities on Systemworks. Thanks in advance for your help.
