WiFi Connection Getting Worse Over Time (2-4 days)

Q: WiFi Connection Getting Worse Over Time (2-4 days)

Hi everyone.

I recently bought a custom-made computer from a well established business in the UK.

The computer arrived and as I was installing everything onto it, the internet dropped out a few times. I thought nothing of it and continued. After a day or two, the dropping out happened more and more until after about 4-6 days, it become unusable.

I contacted the business, and they sent out a new network card. Whilst I was waiting for this to arrive, I tried using a USB adaptor instead of the installed card. This worked fine, until again, after 2 days or so, it started having the same issues and then stopped working completely after a similar amount of time.

The new network card has now arrived and after 2 days, the errors seem to start to be happening again. It has dropped out 3 times now and looks as though to be getting more frequent like before.

I have tried numerous attempts to fix the errors - resetting the adaptor, reinstalling the adaptor, pausing anti-virus, and all the other methods I could find online - but none have made any difference. Using the troubleshooter works okay for the first few times, but as the issue gets worse, it becomes less and less effective. The errors it reports change but most often it is related to a gateway not being available, or there being some form of IP issue.

Perhaps worth noting is that I use my phone as a hotspot as the internet signal is terrible where I have the computer. However, I've tested it, and it works absolutely fine with other devices and whilst the issues are happening on the computer, everything else runs fine. The computer is the only thing to run off the hotspot normally, and the phone has full signal.

In terms of what happens with the computer when the error is happening - the webpage refuses to load, shows no connection, and after a few moments the little yellow triangle appears over the WiFi signal. For the first few days, it will reconnect after troubleshooting, however as time goes on, it refuses to reconnect and just sits there trying.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

The basic computer specs are as follows:
Windows 10 PRO
AMD Ryzen 5 2400G with Radeon Vega Graphics

Thank you for your help,

Preferred Solution: WiFi Connection Getting Worse Over Time (2-4 days)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From Google, the sound distortion appears to be worldwide and has been around for a long time - but Dell tech support appears they know nothing about it. I'm using Windows 7 SP-1. The distortion will stop if I reboot. Without rebooting, the distortion returns anywhere within a few hours to a few days and, as time goes on, the distortion gets much worse. If you have any ideas on how to fix this issue, I will provide as many other particulars about my computer and software as you need. If there is no known solution, I believe a class action suit may be warranted. Thank you in advance.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron that came w/Win 7 installed NO disk, but I grabbed the product key from under battery.
I backed up all my files to external hard drive.  Wanted to do a factory reset,  to get 7 back. (Numerous issues with 10, and I didn't realize I was past the 30 days)

1st issue- Nothing I did would make my F8  key work.. to do it the simple way.
Since I COULD  get to F2, F12..I was initially able to get to a safe mode via F12.  Ran Diagnostics..all good

Then when it rebooted..I no longer see the words  safe mode...there is NO command prompt (Win +R does nothing) , and there is NO start menu.

So now I'm in a continual loop of seeing the Windows logo on a blank screen besides that..with an option to shut down or restart...No commands, no start window     Heeelp?

I'm running windows 8.1 on a HP computer.

When trying to connect to any WIFI network, my computer has a hard time finding the network i'm looking for, but eventually after a few minutes it does find the network. Than I enter the password and press connect and it doen't connect most of the times: "cannot connect to the network". But sometimes it does work for some reason. It's pretty random! Usually it takes me between 5 - 15 minutes to connect to the internet. The frustrating thing is that I know it will work in the end but I don't know when it will work. With my mobile phone I can connect to all the networks I want instantaneously.

I need some help. I have no idea why it takes my computer so long to find the network and to connect with them.

Thank you so much

First, make sure you have the latest wireless driver from HP's web site (assuming that you are using an integrated adapter).

I recently posted in this forum about the problem I was having with proficient hackers. I subsequently received really useful information which allowed me to secure my PC just a little bit better. Since then though the hacker has targetted my NAT router and compromised it.
There is a reason for starting a separate thread today.
What I found is that I can't browse anywhere on the internet using HTTP and still be safe. Very quickly my traffic is detected and so the PC hostname and my live IP address become known. Forexample, my presence on this site is something that can be used to identify me. The number of concurrent users is not that high at the present time.
And if my IP becomes known, apparently my router can be successfully attacked.
Of course I can browse using a proxy but I've found that I can't log on to BC and post a reply if I'm using a proxy. And the same is true of other sites.
So what does this tell me ? Well, most of the internet is being monitored by an unknown number of hackers who can ignore or use that information as they see fit. So this is a serious problem.
And therefore, here's my question: is there any plan to implement SSL/TLS on the BC site in the near future ? 'Cos I'd really like to continue posting here.
And is it possible to increase the formatting options if you choose to post without using javascript ? I found that if don't allow scripts to run you can't even use <CR> in your po... Read more

I guess only the site owner can answer the question about HTTPS. ENTER

Anyway, here's a comment from Mssrs Gibson and Laporte on the subject ENTER
"Leo: Yeah. In our business we're constantly coming across new victims of
cybercrime. And in thinking about it one day we realized that if we - the industry,
really - simply followed your advice of HTTPS-only everywhere, we would have
stopped every single financial cybercrime we've ever been called in for on a post-
mortem. Unfortunately, we were never able to share much event detail with the
public. Suffice to say, if secure HTTP had been the only allowed protocol, not a single
one of the crimes would have been possible. So [quoting listener question] 'Why not simply block all non-secure HTTP traffic, attempt to automatically redirect it to HTTPS to minimize
inconvenience? I'm asking rhetorically, of course. Thanks to you and Leo for all your
efforts each week to put together a world-class podcast. Thank you.'
Steve: So this was a great question."
"You need to have a security certificate on your server."
... "So, I mean, there are still too many barriers to HTTPS. It's getting better all the time. "
"So this is a perfect example of slow evolution in our understanding of the importance of
security on the Internet. I know we'll get there someday. I mean, there will always be
sites that are HTTP only. But I think that'll end up at some point b... Read more

I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate section for this thread because my problems are wide-ranging.

My old laptop (an Acer Aspire 7551G) suddenly stopped being able to run a certain game (Aion) a few months ago after a routine patch for that game. It no longer progresses past the initial loading screen. The developer's support agents have not been able to figure out the problem.

In the process of trying to fix this I have used the "Reset this PC" option, and after that didn't solve the problem I used the Windows 10 media creation tool and booted from a USB stick to wipe the C drive from the command line using the "clean" command in diskpart. I then installed Windows 10 again (there was a hiccup in the OS installation process where I was stuck with the "just a moment..." screen, after a few restarts, running diagnostics and disabling the wifi chip, I was able to get past this although I'm not sure what specifically fixed it).

With the hard drive wiped and a clean installation of Windows 10, the very first thing I did was install Aion and attempt to run the game, and ran into the same issue. This was a few days ago.

Today, the trackpad stopped functioning even though it had been working in this new Windows installation. I usually use a USB wireless mouse (which does still work) so I don't know when exactly the trackpad stopped functioning. I have updated the Synaptic drivers to both the older driver recommended on Acer's site, and the ne... Read more

Hi all, I always had problems with wifi stability on my S40 Thinkpad but after the last lenovo solution center suggested updates the wifi no longer finds most of the networks around me.  This is not an hardware problem, since I use W10 and Linux in a dual-boot scheme. When I boot to Linux, lots of networks are listed, as usual. But in Windows 10, most of the networks are gone, and to have a good signal I have to be very near to the AP. (screenshots attached) Any ideas on how to solve this? Are there any newer/older drivers around to revert this behaviour? TIA Fernando

My computer is a custom build, it is a bit old now, at least 5-6 years. But for the most part it has worked well and is still viable for most gaming. I have always gotten some BSODS while gaming in the past, like maybe one a week, but i always just chopped it up to probably bad drivers or some fluke and it wasn't a big deal.
But more recently, like in the last 6 months, it has started to get worse. It was happening to me about 3-4 times a week a few months ago; and now in the last month or so its been BSODing on me about everyday, and only while i am playing games, never while browsing the net or watching youtube or anything else.

Starting about 6 months ago as well, i notice my computer started to fail its POST. Which means "Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information."

At first i was worried about my video card, but upon further research i realized just because it cannot initialize video doesn't necessarily mean its a GPU problem.

I often have to turn my computer off and on and off and on several times (sometimes up to 10-20 times) before it will pass the POST. It seems that if i Power Cycle my computer, i get more success at booting. (Turning if off and then back on again as quickly as possible before the power completely leaves my PC.)

So, as of the last week or so, i can only play a game for usually between 10 minutes and an hour before the game either randomly crashes or my enti... Read more

To begin with, my desktop PC just couldn't connect to my wireless network that was installed yesterday by the Virgin Media technician in my house. I can connect to it via my laptop but not my desktop which has been the case with other wireless networks so I'm fairly confident it is a problem with my desktop.
But now I cannot even get a connection to check for 'available wireless networks'. The network adapter I'm using is a Realtek RTL8185 54M if that helps at all.

I'm kind of new to this forum, but I've had this problem for several years now and I can't find an answer. My HP envy m6 is working fine whenever my power cord is unplugged, although, as soon as I put the cord back in, my wireless internet connection becomes so bad that I can't visit any websites or even load my home page. I've tried to restart my router (obviously) and even handed the laptop over to my retailer, only to be told that there was nothing wrong. I'm kind of desperate for an answer, since i cant really use my computer normally.

All of the attached DMP files are of the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a) bug check.

This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high. The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

Hello I have a DELL XPS M170 Laptop. I used to run an ebay business which I would sell INSTANT DELIVERY items. I used Outlook Express to send emails once I had received payment. Outlook Express has an option that it will automatically send emails if it picks up key words. The problem was that my laptop had to be on with Outlook Express running in order to instantly send emails. I used to leave my laptop on for days at a time, not only that but I had it on a bed so there wasnt any airflow. I know im a IDIOT for that and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. My laptop doesnt have any problems like shutting down or anything like that. It actually still runs perfectly except that it gets so hot I could barely touch the bottom of it. After leaving it on for a couple hours i could feel the heat coming through the top. I need your help guys what can I do to fix my very hot laptop. What part do I need to replace (because I know I need to replace something) in order to get my laptop back to its original condition? All the replys from other people about this type of situation always say use air to blow out dust but that is clearly not the case for me. I left my laptop on for days and it wasnt on a flat surface. Is this okay? I usually shut my laptop off every night before bed. But lately I have been having shutdown and start up problems. Something is causing Windows to hang during shutdown, and therefore I have to hold the power button down for it to turn off.
Doing this at night, then causes Windows not to want to boot up in the morning. It eventually boots up and loads fine after a few attempts. So instead of having to deal with the frustration of doing this every night, is it acceptable to leave it on for a few days at a time?

(And in regards to the problem my laptop is having, My CD-ROM is also broken..so at this time, I'm unable to use the Windows recovery disk :/)

A:Leaving Laptop on for a few days at a time.

It won't hurt it as long as it has enough ventilation. Don't stuff it into a corner or anything. You could also set it to hibernate, which basically turns it off without shutting down Windows. Of you could just put it in standby, which uses more power but basically does the same thing.

I just watched a YouTube video of a Win7 Image Restoration.
The author indicated he had trouble restoring a System Image that was over 30 days old, due to the fact that the 30 day activation period for Win7 had expired from the time the System Image was made. It returned an error message for an Image that was over 30 days old, whereas an Image that was restored within 30 days of making it did not. Can anyone definitively shed some light on this? Do I have to create a new System Image each 30 days to remain protected due to Microsoft activation requirements?

This guy did not activate his system with a valid product key. Else there is no such restriction.

Hi guys.

Since installing the recent updates for Windows 10, every now and then my Wifi will just disconnect... Turning it back on is as simple as clicking on the Internet icon and clicking "connect" again, though I'm a gamer and when the connection drops out during games it becomes a real problem. My Wifi is set to connect automatically, but that tool seems to be ignored as it disconnects and stays disconnected until I manually click "connect".

A:Wifi disconnects randomly since windows 10 update 2 days ago.

Hi Earless, just want to let you know that, although I don't have a solution to your problem, I've had my wifi icon change to show I'm always in "airplane mode" even thought I'm not. In other words, others are having similar problems, and the solution must go beyond simply "turning system icons on and off" and "restarting the system." Those don't work. For any and all reading this thread, this is an issue of consequence, for indeed we all know that at times our wifi does go out and it'd be nice to simply verify that at a glance at a functioning icon rather than to have to run several test web pages to see if, indeed, I am still connected to the internet. Does anyone have a solution? My experience also came immediately after the recent (Dec 19th, 2015) update to Windows 10.

You can postpone it indefinitely I think by just ignoring the message and closing the window. If you want, you can uninstall the KB3035583 and simply upgrade via the Media Creation Tool whenever you are ready.

If you can, post any minidumps created by the BSOD's by going to C:\windows\minidump and select all the .dmp files. Right-click sending all the files to a compressed(zipped)folder. Upload this folder as a file here.

in this video Laura E. Hunter from Microsoft describes behavior analytics: https://youtu.be/hNZdboDvnuU?t=1251
She says that ATA will analyze the behavior in a domain for 21 days and declare this as normal behavior. After the 21 days ATA will report unusual user behavior based on the 21 days analysis.
I have two questions about this:
1. Can we see the progress of the analysis somewhere? I searched through the ATA-center but there is nothing. Is it possible to see it in some kind of logfile or the Mongo-DB?
2. We have started ATA with one DC. What happens if we add our other DCs later? Will the analysis recognize behavior from those, also when the 21 days are already over?
I did not find anything about this 21 days analys period in the documentation. I'm more than happy with a hint if I have overseen something there.
Thanks in advance

Yesterday I took the advice of some thread online and updated my Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter which seems to have fixed the wifi problem. But the VPN and broadband is still not connecting. I've tried everything on command prompt including pinging which comes back as trasmit failed general failure and ipconfig commands which return as "no operation can be performed... blah blah... it has its media disconnected".

Please, explain this to me like a 7 year old. Don't use any technical terms and be as condescending as possible. Thank you.

I just got a DSL connection (SBC Yahoo) set up on monday, and on the modem (speedstream 4100) there was a sticker that said "To maximize connection speed, leave this modem on for 10 days after DSL installation is complete." After doing some googling, it appears they need to test my line during this period, but not 24/7. I read somewhere that they test it from 10pm till 2am, but that was just one person's opinion. I also figured it may not be at the same times for every person, so I'm not sure when mine is being tested. The reason I'm curious about this is because I can't just simply leave my modem on the whole time. That was already blown when my power went out for a night. I also want to disonnect it on purpose so I can move it over to my xbox. I guess my questions are: If I disconnect during a test, will my modem begin the test again immediatly after reconnecting? Also, how long does this test take? Finally, how affected will my speed be from the night when the power went out?

A:Solved: New DSL Connection: First Ten Days

might be a conversation to have with the ISP and see what they actually intend to do with the test.. I ould be surprised if they open boxes and stick labels on all there modems - tese would be standard modems from a manufacturer - unless they have a deal with the manufacturer to stick labels only on modems they use and ship to customers ...

Hello everyone,

I am currently facing a network issue at my home network. I have a Cisco X1000 (Linksys) router which is dropping out like once every two days. Looks like my DHCP isn't working properly since I am getting a 169 IP-address and no other devices (smartphones and tablets) can connect either. The only resolution is to reset the router by plugging off from the AC power.

My DHCP is set to automatic. Could anyone help me please? I have added a picture of my basic network setup as an attachment. Also, I would like to know what's the difference between a Hostname and a Devicename.

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

I've had experience this problem for a while now on my newly built windows 10 rig. Every few hours, my Wifi simply stops working; the connection is lost. Sometimes it reconnects after a minute or so. Most of the time, I would need to manually disable/enable the wifi adapter in my Network Settings to get it back up again.

It happened with a relatively expensive adapter that I bought not to long ago - Netgear A6210 USB 3.0 dual-band wifi adapter. I found a thread about this issue here. I've not been able to resolve it with any of the tips provided (including downloading a generic 3rd party Mediatek driver). I've used this same adapter without this problem on my older Win7 machine. I thought maybe this adapter "went bad".

So I tried to replace this adapter with an older Wifi adapter made by Rosewill, using older Rosewill drivers. The same issue occurs. (Again, this Rosewill adapter worked perfectly in my Win7 system) So I have a hunch the problem is Windows 10 itself. Does it not place nicely with existing or older wifi adapters on the market? Would I need to buy a new adapter specifically certified for Windows 10?

Anyone have any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Tech Guy Forums!

I've got a Compaq Presario 2410 laptop running Windows XP Home Ed. (SP2) that's seen a gradual decline in performance over the past several months. Boot-up time has increased to about 5 minutes now, applications load very slowly, even alt-tabbing between two windows can take me on the order of 15 seconds. I've been running Lavasoft's Adaware compulsively, but I'm concerned that it's missing something that's causing the slowdown. I am not seeing an popup windows, but the processor seems to be working quite hard even when no programs are open.

Also, I've had a Windows Update yellow shield popping up regularly for awhile now, which is trying to install Office XP Service Pack 3, but it gets halfway through and asks for the Office XP CD, which I misplaced during my last move across the country. Office works fine (except for the overall slowdown). I have no idea if the update I can't get and the slowdown are related.

I've attached a Hijackthis log in the hope that someone here might be able to help me locate the source of my problems. I'm not literate enough to interpret everything in the log, but I do know better than to start deleting system files willy-nilly. Any help given is thoroughly appreciated!

Every 2 days my cable internet connection is completely lost. At first I thought it was my DHCP lease expiring - except when I try to run ipconfig after the connection is lost, I get a windows cannot initialize error, same with task manager. Once a restart, I have my connection back and am able to use task manager and ipconfig just fine. there is usually a period of about 5 minutes between when the connection is lost and when ipconfig and task manager no longer work. I have searched EVERYwhere for this problem and haven't found anything similar. I was thinking maybe it's a worm or virus of some sort since it keeps happening so regularly. Although I am connected to our wireless network on the Folio 13, there is no internet connection. I can, however, connect to the internet via Wifi on two other household laptops, both of them HP, so I believe the problem is with the Folio itself. I can also connect to other computers on the network on the Folio, but something is preventing it from getting on the internet. I can only get the internet via hardwired ethernet connection on the Folio. I have tried the following fixes, multiple times, without success: -Run the Windows troubleshooter for Internet/Network. It says the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken. (But not on other wifi computers here--works fine.)-Reboot/Reset the modem.-Disable/Renable the wifi adapter (Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030)-Update wifi adapter driver (it says driver is up to date)-Uninstall/reinstall wifi adapter-Remove Wifi Network from list of available networks; reboot, add this network back in-Roll back all Windows updates from the past month-Searched self-help forums for a possible solution And yes, the wifi keyboard light is blue, not orange. Can someone help please?

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

I have a Sony Vaio desktop computer running XP with SP3 installed.

I accidentally picked up Antivirus Soft on Tuesday night and thought that I repaired with Malwarebytes in safe mode that evening by removing the 6 infected files that were found. However, some issues appeared after running MBAM: there is a serious hang upon loading the desktop when I first turn on the computer (only the wallpaper appears and it stays there for ~5 minutes); when the desktop finally appears, a "service manager" box pops up and runs something that I can't catch because it goes by too fast; when I try to open internet explorer (8), that also hangs for an eternity before telling me it can't open my homepage; my internet connection is wonky (no connection at all, when I try to release and renew my IP it says that "RPC server is unavailable").

Tuesday night I limped through my homework and somehow (I really do not know what I did that allowed access) connected to the internet. I left the computer on overnight and Wednesday continued using the internet. I was attacked by Antivirus soft again (by opening what I thought was a pdf file), swore, and attempted to use Malwarebytes to fix a second time. That repair found more infected files than the fix on Tuesday night (10 I believe), which I removed. For good measure I also ran AVG antivirus. Both scans reported a clean computer. The desktop hanging issue, service manager script and inability to connect to the in... Read more

Hi,I have a new Aspire ES 13 (ES1-331-P4C1) with Windows 10. I can connect to my wifi-router and access the internet, but the connection randomly drops after a couple of minutes. I can reconnect (sometimes), after running the windows troubleshooter. The wifi-chip is a broadcom BCM43142. It seems, that there's an issue with the driver and/or Windows 10. Wifi works perfectly on Ubuntu-Linux booted from USB. Here's what I've already tried:- reboot of router- turn off all the energy-saving stuff in the device-manager- uninstall old drivers- install new drivers from the Acer site- install all windows updates- install driver in compatibility-mode (windows 7)- reset windows 10 (delete everything and reinstall windows from recovery) The question really is, if this is a known problem with the driver or the OS. If so, then I could install Windows 7. But I'm very close to sending the laptop back, because I really don't want to waste my time fixing a newly bought, preconfigured laptop. Thanks in advance

A:Aspire Es 13 - unstable Wifi connection / Wifi ran...

I had similar problem with ES15.  It started by dropping wifi after about one hour of use, then got worse...Also was plagued with the infamous "red x" over the network icon down in tray at bottom. After slight improvement when I updated the firmware (it was out of date), problem degraded to point that I could not connect at all, even with re-booting. Finally, even no internet with ethernet!   Problem finally solved by doing the following: press "control/alt/delete" all at once, select "Task Manager",click "Services Tab" at top, click "status" tab on line just below the tabs: this will re-sort the services alphabetically together according to their status's (ie running, stopped)...click again on status until all the services in the top  of the list you are seeing all say "stopped". Carefully begin going down the list top to end of services that are stopped, any stopped service that contains a reference to network, connection, connectivity, discovery,x-box,wireless, LAN, WAN, homegroup,:click on it (memorize the service name), right click on it: select "open services" find that service in the alphabetical list,(notice the descriptions here are very detailed now) RIGHT CLICK IT, select "Properties" select "Start", If startup type is not "Automatic", select "Automatic", click apply. Go back to the previous services page, continue down the list from previous service (that you just changed) and find the next one, repeat above steps. It may be fast...
