No sound from headphones on HP Envy 17" laptop windows 10

Q: No sound from headphones on HP Envy 17" laptop windows 10

I have an HP 17" ENVY laptop. Numerous problems with sound since a windows 10 upgrade. Finally got it all working then sound stopped coming out of the headphones. Briefly, it came out of headphones and speakers at the same time, now only speakers. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: No sound from headphones on HP Envy 17" laptop windows 10

First you need to verify your headphone is working well or not . If it's working well,Try to replace the headphone. In control panel, you can find an option "Sounds". And you will get an option related to microphone and please test it. Please try to update your driver also. Hope now your issue is solved.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Windows 8.1. When I first plug my headphones into the audio jack it works and it's initially silent. However, after I finish playing any sound from any app through the headphones, a static sound constantly comes through them. It doesn't sound like the noise from a loose connection or anything. It sounds more like the sound of ocean waves. It lasts for about 30 seconds after having played any sound, and then it goes silent again. I've tested it with multiple headphones and I've also tested it with the speakers itself and it doesn't happen. It only does it when something is plugged into the audio jack.
The only clue I have is that when I had Windows 7, it used to recognize devices plugged into the audio jack as "headphones", but on this computer it lists it as "speakers." I'm not sure if this is just a Windows 8 thing or if it has something to do with the problem. I can still return the computer so I'm wondering if this is a malfunction or if it can be fixed through the OS.

A:Static sound coming from headphones on Windows 8 laptop

The headphones not being identified as headphones is standard on many sound systems. Both my Win 7 and Win 8.1 systems do not identify headphones when plugged in.

Do you have different headphones you can try or can you try the headphones you have on a different PC? That will tell you if its the PC or the headphones. As it doesn't do it with the PC's speakers says its not a program causing it or some sound enhancement. Also with the headphones plugged in, wiggle the headphone plug to see if you hear any noise.

I just bought this hp pavilion dv6-2162nr laptop, and suddenly the speakers stopped working.

I removed the driver and reinstall it, I tried plugging in and out the headphones, I tried different solutions from different forums (including from this forum HP laptop no sound from speaker but there is sound through headphone), and couldn't get it fixed.

I have win 7 home premium 64-bit.

I don't think it is a hardware problem, because when i play with the headphones volume control (from the taskbar), suddenly i hear sound from the speakers (when i stop playing with it the sound stops).

I also tried hp support, and they couldn't help me.
please have some answers for me

Brand new laptop from pcspecialist.co.uk.

I'm not getting any sound through my headphones.

Have tried different headphones - both of which work on other devices.

Sound works fine through speakers, when headphones are connected sound stops coming from speakers and there is no sound from speakers.

There is a pop noise when i plug headphones into jack

Not muted / volume levels are up.

When plugging in headphones, they are not recognised in control panel>sound>playback but speakers are.

I will try to be as detailed as possible. I am pretty experienced with drivers and sound settings but this problem has me stumped.

I have a Fangbook III made by Cyperpower PC. I am unable to play sound via the on-board speakers for the laptop. I am however able to play sound through the 3.5mm auxiliary jack input. I have speakers set as default device under the playback settings.

This is where is gets strange. Whenever I attempt to delete the Realtek audio driver, whether it is through windows or a 3rd-party driver uninstallation software, Realtek always comes back within a few seconds. Right before it does come back, under playback, it separates speakers and headphones with both having the driver High Definition Audio Device. If I hurry before the Realtek driver comes back the speakers seems to work! But once the Realtek audio speakers comes back, the default speakers and headphones goes away and I continue to have the same problem with the Realtek driver.

I attempted to reformat the computer with windows 10 and erase all drivers but Realtek was already installed. I assume it is required for this specific laptop? Any ideas on how to direct the Reaktek High Definition Audio driver to use the speakers instead of the auxiliary jack?

Thanks for the help and let me know if there is any more information that you guys need.

I got my HPg61-429wm laptop back from the computer shop, I had a problem with my fan. Before that, my headphones worked like normal, so I don't know if taking the computer apart to replace the fan might have messed with the headphone jack somehow or what. My headphones worked for my mp3 player, so I know it's not them. When I plug my headphones in, the sound plays from the speakers instead.

I've tried going to sound in control panel -> sound, setting independent headphones as default with the green circle by it, nothing happened, yet this seems to solve most other people's problems.
I tried using Everest and under PCI/ PnP (no idea what this is) I have two "High Definition Audio Controller [NoDB]" listings. I google that, and someone mentions to download Realtek AC 97, so I do that, install - nothing.

I tried uninstalling the sound drivers from device manager. The ones I have are ATI High Definition Audio Device and IDT High Definition Audio Codec. I tried right click -> update, going to HP's audio drivers and installing them. I went to IDT's page, and they just redirect you to the computer brand manufacturer for audio drivers. I have no idea where to find audio drivers from ATI.

I used dxdiag and this is what the sound tab says:

Also in control panel>sound>manage audio devices, there is no option for headphones. Hello All,

I have a very interesting problem on my laptop. I am unable to get any sound through my internal speakers and headphones. I also am unable to set the headphones as my default device, even if I disabled the speakers.
I have tried the troubleshooting for both speakers and headphones, but to no avail. While troubleshooting for speakers, I get no issue found. While troubleshooting for headphones, it asks me to set the default device as audio. I say yes to it but at the end get the error "Not Fixed. Unable to set the default device as headphones."

Here is a very interesting part. If I enable both of them and the internal speakers are set as default (can't change it), now if I do a test on Headphones in the "Playback devices". I am able to hear sound through my laptop speakers!!!!!

Does anyone have any idea what is going on???

Please help...

A:No Sound through Laptop and Headphones. Interesting scenario..

Sound is such a pain to troubleshoot. First thing I suggest is get a screenshot for us to see all your devices. Next try to reset everything to default and work from there. Disable everything you don't need. Also do you have any third-party software that controls sound like SoundMax?

If nothing seems to be working you can try to uninstall/reinstall the sound drivers. Check Device Manager.

Used my computer after work to listen to music with headphones in and it sounds rubbish, bearable but rubbish. I have Sennheiser headphones that usually sound fantastic, they still do sound fantastic on my phone listening to the same song on Spotify.

Anyway, tried Spotify and YouTube and the music just sounds rubbish, kind of flat and no bass. Tried using the audio adjustments and it's not really made a difference. It was fine this morning.

The laptop's built in speakers sound as bad as usual, better than the headphones though which isn't right at all.

Really am stumped as to why this has happened.

I have a HCL laptop with Windows 8 Pro x86 installed. Whenever I connect my headphones I don't get any sound from it. I have gone to my "Playback Devices" and selected "Show Disabled Devices" and the headphones are not listed there. What can I do to work around this problem ? I need my headphones to play sound. Should I update my audio driver? I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8 with migrating all my settings. I am using VIA HD Audio Deck as my default sound driver. Thanks.

A:Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

Check with the PC vendor for any drivers. The PC vendor's drivers are the preferred drivers. Drivers from other sources may or may not work correctly.

However, since up upgraded, Windows may have installed the generic basic function HD Audio Codec drivers, either alone or in addition to the VIA audio drivers. If this is the case, the HD Audio Codec drivers could be conflicting and cause problems. Go to the Device Manager and Display what Audio Devices are listed. The VIA should be listed and if you have HDMI audio that will be listed. If the HD Audio Codec is listed, Right click on the entry and then Left click "Uninstall". Restart the PC and check for headphone operation.

I have looked quite a bit for my problem, and perhaps a fix to my problem and I have never been able to find one. I've tried Microsoft fix-its, they do not work.

Basically my problem is at random times, my headset will just stop working and it will switch back to my laptop, as if my headphones are not even plugged in. It happens multiple times a day, seemingly at random (lately its been this way, but I have had it go longer than a day without doing this to me). As I am browsing the internet, as I am turning on a game, when I am away and the computer is just sitting there.

I've tried checking my device manager for differences when it is working and when it is not, I've tried updating all software, I've tried setting default devices. None of it has helped.

The only thing that fixes this is logging off, or restarting the computer. This then returns it to normal.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 windows 7 home premium x64.
Headphones in question are Razor Carcharias.

I am using an Advent 5303 laptop with sound connected to external speakers via the headphone/line out socket. Recently the audio output via this socket stopped working and now a red light is constantly shining from the socket. The internal laptop speakers work fine, just headphones or external speakers do not work. Full spec of the laptop can be found here:

The laptop uses the Realtek High Definition Audio software which used to lauch a pop-up when speakers were connected. This pop-up still launches when a microphone is connected, but not with headphones or speakers. I have tried reinstalling the drivers and the light does go out but then comes up again and the speakers stop working.

Hoping this isn't a hardware fault, but would appreciate some guidance from anyone who has seen this before.

Hey all, I'm new here, very frustrated, and hoping I can get this solved.

My computer is a HP dv7-2185DX in total stock form.

I have no sound coming from my speakers. I don't know of any specific trigger. A friend ejected my iPod and walked off with it, but that's the only action I can think of done on the computer for a while.

Looking in the IDT Audio panel it says the following:

With no headphones in - it shows that I have a pair plugged in my middle jack.
With headphones on the left (mic) jack - it shows a mic plugged in and nothing else
With headphones in the middle - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)
With headphones on the right - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)

EDIT: More symptoms:

Now it shows the wrong front panel in the IDT Audio screen. It shows as 2-jack layout with mic (L) / headphone (R)

When I plug in phones in my PC into the jacks on the front, it shows as follows....

R side headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
Middle headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
L Mic - shows in screen as the left side mic

** When my phones are plugged in the Mic jack sound is produced under both situations. **

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I already tried rolling back the IDT Audio CODEC (one of the few things I can think to do in this situation, hoping it will help.) I'm going to re-update it and see if that helps, but anything beyond, I'm cluele... Read more

I've got a Thinkpad T430s (Windows 7) here and it's acting strangely. Namely, if I play a clip through the laptop's speakers, I hear no sound, but when I plug the headphones, everything works nice and neat.
One thing I noticed, is that computer actually recognises the sound, because the volume mixer/application, at the lower right/tray, and it's volume bar shows me the green indicators jumping up and down, as the music plays.

Of course I've tried reinstalling the drivers, I've uninstalled the audio device in Device Manager and restarted the computer. And yes, the obvious things are also checked - nothing (the applications) is muted in the volume mixer, default device is correct under playback devices.

Some have reported on the web, that it might help to use toothpick for example and "un-jam the sensor", but that didn't help either.

I've also tried booting up the newest Linux Mint (has pretty good multimedia support) from the USB and I heard no sound through speakers.

So I'm out of ideas here. It looks more and more like a hardware fault, but how can I be absolutely sure?
Thanks for helping out,

Please can someone advise how to fix this or is it just faulty?

@fundif? Try these 2 drivers. "Then reboot." http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74569.exe http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73001-73500/sp73302.exe REO

As in the title, the issue is that I most often have no sound from headphones on my laptop. I plug the headphones in, they are discovered by the system (I might even get pop up saying I plugged a device to the audio jack), but I hear no sound form them.

The fun part is that:
This isn't persistent. Sometimes Windows boots and I have sound from headphones till I shut the laptop down. Most often, however, Windows boots and I have no sound from headphones till I switch the laptop off.
The issue is limited only to headphones. Built-in loudspeakers work just all right all the time.
I also have Linux Mint installed on my laptop. No such issues are present in Mint, I always have sound from my headphones there.
This was not always happening. The laptop is pretty old, it came with Windows 7 HP 64bit preinstalled, and no such issues were happening. But then I installed Windows 10 Education from Dream Spark, and I bumped into the problem of having no sound from headphones. A few months ago, however, I did factory reset and again installed Windows 7 HP 64bit (thinking it was a Win10 specific issue), this system is installed on my laptop now, but to my astonishment the problem persists.
Any chances to somehow fix this?

The laptop is Asus X54C. It was in the warranty service a few times, always because of faulty HDD and/or RAM.

I am running 64-bit Windows 7 on a Dell XPS 17. I have never tried to use the headphones before today, and now I remember why.

I cannot get any sound out through the headphone jack to my headphones. I know these headphones work, but I have no clue how to change the sound settings so that my wireless USB speaker will mute when the headphones are plugged in.

I never experienced these problems in Windows XP, it was always dead simple. But with Windows 7, everything has to be hidden or just not work as expected.

I tried unplugging the USB speakers to see if I got sound through the headphones, but that didn't work either.

Have not tried changing drivers; am using the stock drivers that came with the system.

Tried searching here for solutions, but it seems like people with my problem never got answers.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Klisiewicz

A general troubleshooting option is to reinstall the device and see if that helps. If nothing else, it will eliminate one possible problem.

Go to device Manager and uninstall the "device"
Windows 7 should install the device and driver again. See if that changes anything.

Hello everyone, I recently updated my laptop to windows 10 and stopped having sound to my headphones. (standard Sony headphones without mic, 3pin 3.5mm jack) Obviously, tested the headphones in some other device and they are working fine.I realized that the beats audio controller was also missing so I went to the HP support website and downloaded the windows 8 version of the driver, since there was no Windows 10 version. (Driver version in 6.10.6423.0. 14-Aug-2012) After that, the computer speakers changed to the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and a Communications Headphones appeared in my playback devices. It now detects when I plug in the headphones and cuts the speaker sound but there?s still no sound coming in to the headphones. I tried changing the both speakers and headphones format settings for all possible rates and frequencies, nothing changed. Also tried another headset with 4 pin jack, and a speaker with 3 pins like the original headset without changes. I read somewhere only to change the driver to the High Definition Audio Device but that causes the headphones to not being recognized and turns the beats audio control off. Running the troubleshooter didn?t produce any results. I have also noticed that I used to hear a faint beep when I plug in the headphones to the computer and I can?t hear that anymore. That has to be something on the headphones because they do that everywhere. I am wandering if there is actually no p... Read more

Hi. I recently bought a new pc and for the first few days the sound was working fine. This morning, some sound is not working, and some is working fine. Some youtube audio appears to be working and other youtube audio does not work at all. It seems like sound on certain frequency or band is working but other sound is not and when it does work, it often sounds fragmented (Forgive my ignorance with correct terminology/explanation). Thus far I have tried:

Testing different headphones (I don't have speakers atm only earbud headphones being used through the front panel headphone input)
Tried multiple browsers (I mainly use firefox)
Tested different audio (some mp4 files don't work properly in windows media player either)
Checked device manager, no issue and audio drivers are up to date and device is apparently working properly
Restarted my computer and basically followed any sound troubleshooting methods I could find

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

A:Windows 8 sound issue when using headphones

Update: I borrowed a friends speakers and they appear to be having the same problem although it is hard to tell because they are so crappy (old, static and humming). I also went into playback devices, right clicked and did a sound test. The test sound comes through perfectly, especially with the earphones.

I have volume set around 8% and for some reason it is way louder than on Vista. On Vista I usually have it around 22% when I use headphones. On Windows 7 RC it's extreme loud when I set it to 22%. Anyway to fix this? I tried everything in the sound properties.

A:Sound Very Loud With Headphones On Windows 7 RC

I have the same problem. Think the scale is ridiculous, because everything I will ever need is between 0-20%. Even 10% can be too loud at times.

Edit: My soundcard is Creative X-fi XtremeMusic. XP there was two sliders for volume (wave and normal) and that way it was fine in that. But 7 only has one slider.

This feature worked fine in Windows 7.  At work I keep the sound muted, except when I plug in my headphones.  Windows would automatically unmute, and if I unplugged the headphones it would mute. I just upgraded to Windows 10.  I've made sure all of the drivers are up to date using Lenovo's web-based scanning utility.  This feature doesn't work - audio stays muted when plugging in headphones.  I've looked into Windows 10 forums and they blame the issue on the OEM, so here I am.  How can I fix this?

One thing I don't see mentioned is to make sure they're set as default. Try right clicking the little speaker icon and clicking playback options. Make sure that the headphones are set as default devise.
