Windows 7 Home Basic partitioning

Q: Windows 7 Home Basic partitioning

There is a problem with a partitioning process. Firstly, I've installed Acronis Disk Director Suite and in manual mode I've started to create a new partition. My notebook had 3 partitions: main partition of ~300Gb with Windows installed, unknown "System" partition with "boot" flag of ~1.5Gb and recovery partition of ~8Gb. So I tried to create a new partition using the free space from the first one. After rebooting Acronis started to work, created a new partition and started to replace "HDDRECOVERY" partition. During this process, notebook had been shutdown (it was plugged into the socket) and after turning on, I noticed the next: after turning on and booting BIOS, the laptop is going to reboot again and again and again. Any ideas? P.S.: sorry for the very muddled description

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently bought a Lenono U310 laptop with 32 GB SSD and 500 GB HDD with Win7 Home basic OS.

When I tried to use windows disk management to partition the HDD, I kept getting the error message about converting the primary disk to dynamic. The Lenovo service center also tried but could not do it. They certified the HDD is defective and are arranging for a refund.

My question is does Win 7 home basic OS not allow disk partitioning?

A:HDD partitioning with Win7 Home basic OS - Possible or not possible

If you already have 3 primary partitions, windows will warn you about turning your disk to dynamic, don`t do that.

You can use Partition Wizard to make another partition.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

I recommend using the bootable cd.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Can you post a shot of disk management ?

Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

And I`m not positive, but I don`t see why you couldn`t use disk management in Windows Basic.

The problem which I faced is the same as the one given below:

partitioning problem

I bought a new HP laptop which came with 4 partitions all of which are Primary partitions. The c: drive came with a massive 445GB. But I do not want to use the same partition for all my needs so i was thinking of creating another two partitions. So i shrunk c: from the Disk Management leaving 320GB Unallocated space for usage. But when I tried to create a partition from I got the "changing to Dynamic disk" warning. Basically it's similar to the problem faced by the other person in the link posted above.

So I followed the post #8n by "Bare Foot Kid" and it went fine, the restarting and all till I tried creating a new volume. See the screenshots below:

BTW, I have no idea how it happened but Q: suddenly popped out of nowhere after the "max partitions error".

So now I'm clueless. :/

Just ignore Q which is a virtual drive configured by Microsoft Office suite for various purposes and will go away if you uninstall Office.

Hi
Please advice on the performance comparison between
- Windows 7 Home Basic versus
- Windows 7 Home Premium
assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM.

Just a hearsay...that Windows 7 Home Basic is lagging behind Windows 7 Home Premium in terms of performance assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM. Please confirm whether this is true or not.

By the way, how to activate the Windows Aero in Windows 7 Basic???

A:Performance comparison btw. Windows 7 Home Basic versus Home Premium

Hello cheesum and welcome to Seven Forums.

Last question first. This tutorial may help enable Aero. Please note that there is no way to enable transparency on Windows Home Basic.

Aero - Enable in Unsupported Editions of Windows 7

As far as performance, I have not been able to find any specific "speed" tests to say one way or the other.

Difference Between Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium | Difference Between | Windows 7 Home Basic vs Home Premium

But if Basic and Home Premium are run on two identical machines (not just identical RAM, but also identical hard drive/hard drive speed, identical CPU, identical programs and apps installed, etc) I would give a very slight performance advantage to Basic simply because it doesn't have the same amount of features that Home Premium has. Fewer features to load usually equals faster performance. But I think any performance advantage would be so slight it wouldn't make any appreciable difference.

I did find some comments comparing Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

performance difference 7 home premium vs. 7 professional? - Microsoft Community

Of course, others may completely disagree with my thoughts and that's cool. Healthy discussion and debate is welcomed.

I have recently purchased a new Acer Aspire 5535 laptop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium (WVHP) installed.

The computer came with a number of programs that I am not interested in having on my system. In addition, I was not provided a restore disc. I do own a copy of Windows Vista Home Basic (WVHB).

I would like to keep WVHP as I appear to be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 . . . but I would like to reinstall to get rid of all these worthless programs. Can I use a WVHB disc with my new WVHP product key?

Could I install WVHB with the WVHB product key, then use the WVHP key supplied by Acer to upgrade?

Thanks for your time in answering my question. I hope it isn't unclear.

Thanks,

Jeremy

why partition? the other day i was at my fahter-in-law's and we were talking about his computer. he has a 120 gb harddrive which he had partitioned into 4 drives....it got me to thinking. i have never partitioned any of my hard drives since owning a computer. i have a 20gb and a 40gb harddrive and neither one of them is split up into virtual drives...so what is the advantage of say taking my 20 and partitioning it into say 2 10gb drives? the only thing i can see is that it could make accessing information on a larger drive easier, but with computers as fast as they are....so what? is this a dumb question?

Hello,

I have a 1TB hard drive with a lot of free space, and I would like to use some of this space to set up a home server that I will eventually publish a web site to. I'm very new to setting up home servers but I read something about setting up a storage pool in order to set up a server.

I'm looking for advice on how to accomplish this, I'm pretty lost.

Thanks!

A:Partitioning Hard Drive to Set up Home Server on Windows 8

I would use a Linux distro that is set up as a Server, if you want something quick & dirty. If you want to build the server from the ground up so to speak. Then use Ubunutu Server and just install the modules you want.

Keep in mind that setting it up is not for the faint of heart. I would only use Windows 8 as a way of testing webpages, by running a server inside a VM, for test purposes only.

There are all kind of tutorials out there in how to do it with Linux. You just need to find the right tutorial that gives you the best info.

Windows desktop OS is not really meant to be used as a Server, but you can do it by installing Apache, turning on IIs, and then go from there.

ClearOS or aka Clark Connect, is always a good one to play with. I have used it in the past, when I was in school working on my Business degree, with a minor in Computer IT. ClearOS - Linux Small Business Server - SBS Alternative

Hi all,
I am running into a trouble while using the VMWare workstation. I am trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on Windows XP-SP3 using VMWare Work Station. After I choose the iso file for the RHEL-4 cd's iso, it takes me to easy install and just asks me the total hard disk space I want to dedicate to the Virtual Machine. But I need more space to be allocated to my "/" partition rather than /home partition. But every time I allocate more and more sace to the total virtual machine so that I can install more programs to my VM, I don't get any benefit, as most of that gets allocated to /home partition. How can I stop this and allocate the sizes I want to give "/" and "/home" according to my preferences? I am using the latest VMWare 7.
Hoping for some positive solutions,

I have had this HP G62 laptop for almost four years. It has always had Windows 7 Home Basic on it. I had to format my hard drive a few weeks ago due to viruses corrupting my graphics (OpenGL), so I did this and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic.

Before I formatted my hard drive, I used a program to obtain my Product Key for Microsoft Office and I also made a note of the Windows Product Key which was different to the one on the Certificate Of Authenticity on the bottom of the laptop. I downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 (which apparently is legal) and put it onto a flash drive and used it to reinstall Windows. I don't remember entering the Product Key when installing, so cannot confirm this.

I received a message saying that the Windows is not genuine and I must activate it. I tried to do that using the Product Key on the COA and it says that the product key will not work with this edition of Windows. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop says it is for Windows 7 Home Premium, but my laptop came to me with Home Basic.

I also tried the Product Key that I obtained from the program before formatting and this key gives me a message saying "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license." (Error Code 0xC004F063)

Please could you assist me, here is the MGADiag report.

From the looks of it you did a repair/reinstall using a Retail disk.

If the Key on your machine is for Windows 7 Home Premium - then that is what the machine is licensed for (and why anyone would wish to downgrade it to Home Basic is rather beyond me) - and you need to upgrade to the Home Premium install to get the Key to work. From what I can see of the Spec for the machine, the default is Home Premium.

From where did you purchase this?

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! Before formatting the C drive, did you have a Windows OEM version - Windows preinstalled by HP with your computer. When you bought the computer initially, did it have Win 7 preinstalled OR you installed WIndows later ? If you have a product key, you can try to download WIndows 7 installational ISO image from Microsoft >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 Then, burn the image to a DVD and use to install Win 7.Post successful WIn 7 installation, you can download and use HP Supprot Assistant to get the latest updates from HP such as drivers updates.  Let me know if this works for you.

Hi everyone,

I am using Windows 7 home BASIC edition, 64 bit OS. My C: drive had 465 gb. I wanted to partition it and went to disk management. OS suggested to break 250gb only and I partitioned it. Now when I nall"New simple volume" on this unallocated space, everything went fine and on pressing finish button I was prompted the message:

"The operation I selected will convert basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s). If you convert the disk(s) to dynamic, you will not be able to start installed OS from any volume on the disk(s) (except the current boot volume). Do you wish to continue?"

Please let me know what should I do? I want to partition C: I also want to know how to increase the partition size of the partitioned size? and how to partition of my drive.?

A:Partitioning Error: Basic disk will be converted to dynamic disks

Hello cpsattawan. Welcome to the forum.

Don't convert the disk to Dynamic!

The are two drive file systems used for hard disks: legacy MBR (Master Boot Record) and the newer GPT (GUID Partition Table).

MBR disks can only have 4 Primary partitions. Any primary partitions added after 4 will require the the disk to be converted to a Dynamic Disk. Dynamic Disk is a supplemental system that lays over MBR. Windows can't boot from a Dynamic Disk. This system is used for data disks.

If you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window we can confirm this.

The easiest solution is to created an Extended Partition which will then contain Logical Disks. You can have many Logical Disks.
Partition / Extended : Logical Drives

Another solution is to delete one of the existing partitions. A common one to do this with is the Recovery Partition installed by computer manufacturers. What people do is burn the backup CDs of the Recovery Partition to keep on hand and then delete the partition, freeing a 4th Primary Partition for personal use.

A more complicated solution would be to convert the hard drive to GPT. But this process will delete all data on the disk so you need to be prepared with system Disk Images and personal data backups. You can practically have all the Primary Partitions you want on a GPT disk.

Windows Home Premium is your first level of the Windows family. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare

Below Home Premuim is only preinstall in factory Home Starter and Home Basic. These version arent very common because its a strip version of Windows 7 Home Preemuim. I think that you cant buy Home Basic or Starter at retail shops they only sell the Home Premium
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions#Main_editions

I am suggesting Home Premium because its commonly for Home User or Professional is Business environment

32 bit is for 86 bit processors
64 bit is for 64 bit processors
OEM disc tie to your motherboard to that disc. Retail disc dont have that limitation

Depending on your hardware you can buy 32 or 64 bit version of Windows

I think if you buy retail has both versions 32,64 while OEM has to specified 32 or 64 versions

Will it boot?
What is the error that you are receiving?
Disable defragging before it runs..possibly making this more difficult

Hi,

I have recently bought LENOVO Z560 with pre-installed 32-bit Windows 7 Home Basic.

I want to know:
1) How can I upgrade to 64 bit Home Basic
2) How can I know/ get the PRODUCT KEY of my pre-installed 32 bit Home Basic
3) Do I need to pay extra amount if I upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit (as, I have heard that if I purchase, I will get 32 and 64 bit OS in a single pack only)
4) Will my existing set of drivers work fine with 64 bit Home Basic. If not, from where can I get the drivers

Thanks In Advance.

Regards,
Ajoy

Over thanksgiving, i was called in to help my aunt's Thinkpad connect to the printer. She mentioned that she'd like windows 7 so i helped her get Windows Ultimate Steal using her .edu email address. It downloaded well, and we opened up the setup file. I was just leaving, so i told her to click upgrade when the prompt came. i received a call saying a dialog box popped up saying it could not upgrade from Vista Home basic, which she was apparantly running. Does anyone know of a solution or workaround to let her upgrade to Windows 7?

A:Windows Vista Home Basic

Which version of Win7 did she buy?

According to the upgrade matrix:

http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/windows_7_upgrade_chart.png

Vista Home Basic can be upgraded-in-place to Win7 Home Premium or Ultimate.

That only applies within the same addressing type: 32 bit can only be upgraded-in-place to 32 bit, 64 to 64.

An upgrade license can be used in other ways, but only with a custom (clean) install.

A:Installing SAS in Windows 7 Home Basic

Welcome to Seven Forums ann16. It should install. Try downloading the installer again. Download to your desktop, and right click the installer and choose Run as administrator. If you are trying to install from a non administrator account, that would also be an issue. A Guy

You need to change the Product Key to the oneon the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the batterycompartment), using the Change ProductKey link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need toactivate by phone.

I would like to tell you that there is no Windows 7 Home Basic trial version now, but you can still download the Windows 7 Enterprise 90-day Trial instead.

In addition, if you have already buy Home Basic from Microsoft Online store, you can contact Microsoft Online store customer service.

Downloading installation discs can be risky . . there are no legal sites to do so, and the illegal ones will often include things you do not want.

You can request a replacement disc here:

I want to get a better version of windows 7 ie windows professional and want to sell my home basic edition Disk. How do i let windows registration know that I have replaced the old one so when the buyer registers it it doesnt come up as a copy. I don't want to do the upgrade online route as it costs the same as getting a new disk here so it is hardly an upgrade price. BEsides I need to reformat my drive as the motehrboard was faulty and had to be replaced so I will be reformatting anyway.

A:Can i sell my windows 7 home basic 64-bit once i have replaced it

Hello Dragonfire, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It all depends.

If your Windows 7 Home Basic copy is a OEM copy or a factory OEM copy that came preinstalled on your computer, then you will not be able to sell it since it is permanently tied to the first computer (yours) that is was activated on and can never be activated on another computer.

If it is a retail copy, then sure you could sell it if you like since it will no longer be installed on your computer. Since it has been activated on your computer, the new owner may have to do a phone activation for their computer though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi bapusaheb and Welcome to SevenForums

Try this:

When you boot from the Windows 7 DVD to start installation, select the Custom installation.
On the next screen, select Drive options (advanced)
Delete any partitions found and click on the single unpartitioned space.

Ran twice tweaking.com windows repair in safe mode.

The problem still exists.

Help please!

A:windows update not working (win 7 home basic)

Hi Ash,
Nothing wrong in that report at all.

The server referal error points towards a lack of access to it, is it your ISP's?, have you reset your ssid and password.

The Update error, service not started is spp??

For starters can you run the Windows update Troubleshooter, try updating again.

if that fails can you run/post the results from this link,
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

and from the Windows update log the last day entries

hi, I have just installed windows 7 home basic RTM (7600) on an old and slow pc. I chose home basic not starter edition. when it was done, it has all the home basic logos, and it thinks it is home basic, but it is missing all the features that home basic has, and is performing like starter edition. the "personalize" menu is not there when you right click the desktop, nor is it in control panel. I can install any other version of windows 7, but Ultamate is too heavy for this compute. I have starter installed on a different machine, and it is no different than this home basic installation? a bad disc? or an install error? or is it suppose to do this. thanks in advanced.
