Cant get elevated privileges

Q: Cant get elevated privileges

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and there's an account that had Administrator privileges but it doesn't show on the login screen. The two accounts available are a Standard user and the Guest account. I reboot into safe mode but the only two options are the two mentioned. I can't do anything in safe mode as far as the User Accounts applet is concerned, but I ran a "net user" command and it showed that the Administrator privileged account is active.

I can't edit the registry, and the UAC doesn't have any options of selecting an elevated account (it's completely blank).

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Cant get elevated privileges

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think I understand how Linux handles the elevated privileges, but I'm not sure how Microsoft does it. Did they try to reinvent the wheel or just use public domain code from Linux (A rhetorical question).
When I installed W7 Pro on my PC, it had me create a profile. I then customized the profile to have the basic apps that I would need to administer the PC. I want to demote this account's privileges to better secure the PC. What is the best way to enable
elevated privileges with a password and keep the highest level of security.
I have seen methods (copy profile to a different account) on the web and followed them, but they seem to have issues. I don't know how Microsoft intended this to work, but I would like to know what method the Technical community believes is the right way
to handle this.
Thanks in advance.

I need users to be able to do "net file" in a cmd window to see who is using a file as this stops them from getting their work done. Unfortunately only administrators can do this.

Hello Mark, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What system file are you trying to move?

If you like, you could enable the built-in "elevated" Administrator account, then sign in to it to have full elevated rights when needed. Do note, that Store apps will not work in elevated accounts.

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a WiFi Hotspot on my Laptop running Windows 7.
When I enter the command:

Code:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow "ssid=myssid" "key=mykey? keyUsage=persistent
in an elevated command prompt, it says:
"You must run this command from a command prompt with administrator privilege."

I have an administrator account and had never problems with it.

Does someone has an idea what the problem could be?

A:No administrator privileges in elevated command prompt

Hi Bones, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The message you get shows absolutely clear without any doubts that you are not running the command from elevated Command Prompt. That message is only shown when a command requiring administrative privileges has been run from a normal Command Prompt.

When run from an elevated Command Prompt, your command syntax is OK (highlighted yellow) and runs as it should, the output (highlighted green) showing it's working:

Anybody has any idea, how to obtain a complete list of EXEs that have the setting "run as an administrator" enabled? Obviously checking them manually one by one isn't a solution. Just point me in general direction (registry path, group policies, file attribute...). I'm stuck. Thanks.

A:Obtaining a list of all programs that are run with elevated privileges

Welcome to the forum.

Most executable files, including exe, cpl, msc, and more, will have this option. The context menu provides the option based on the file extension. This includes old DOS executables that predate UAC.

Hi to all
I have recently taken delivery of a new computer which has WIN7 Pro SP1 as the OS, and after downloading all critical/important security updates I tried to run a few commands only to discover I did not have full administrator rights/privileges.
After being somewhat led down the garden path elsewhere, I was directed to this forum. I have looked through the 'tutorials' and have found my solution. I would prefer to have the elevated rights to my computer rather than have to ask every time I want to do something or access certain files. I do not download or install rubbish. I have as yet not set a password - will add later - but I have removed the default nag UAC.
I have read through the tutorials and for my computer usage it looks like the below is what I need to follow - possibly all options - could this be confirmed?
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html?filter[2]=User%20Accounts
I am the sole user of this computer, now and in the future. I am not on any 'home group' nor likely to be. It was brought to my attention that after a reboot my desktop and display settings may be altered. I will be setting a manual checkpoint in system restore in case I do something wrong following the tutorial.

Hello,

Re-posted without the HJT report ... sorry I didn't realize we weren't supposed to include them in this forum.

I have some strange stuff going on and my attempts at researching them have not helped me to resolve it. Here are the symptoms.
I have XP home SP3 installed so I do not have access to XP pro tools if they are needed.

I have installed Comodo firewall and every time I open a new program, it asks for elevated debug privileges.

background activity happens when these happen (hourglass appears in the cursor)

I also seem to have a lot of stuff on my computer that would more properly be on a server even though I am a home user and connecting through a router (no network)

I have disabled every unneeded service that I could think of that could cause these and still no luck (using this site, black viper, and the elder geek).

Hiya

Who should read this bulletin: Administrators of Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0, Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP systems.
The Windows kernel is the core of the operating system. It provides

allocates processor time to processes and manages error handling.

There is a flaw in the way the kernel passes error messages to a
debugger. A vulnerability results because an attacker could write a
program to exploit this flaw and run code of their choice. An
attacker could exploit this vulnerability to take any action on the

For an attack to be successful, an attacker would need to be able

I recently had a problem where my graphics driver decided not to install the update after it removed the working version, now I can't get any version to install. But, that's a different issue (maybe connected though). I just went through and did a full virus scan using pretty much every boot cd I have at hand, as well as malwarebytes (oh, and that's another issue to work on later) and superantispyware. None found any problems except the usual tracking webpages ... nothing major. Ok, so after rebooting after all of that, everything is running in Admin mode! I'm still logging in with my normal username and the Administrator account is still disabled. But if I go to open a cmd prompt I see that the command will run with elevated privs. I can't figure out why. Does anyone have any ideas?

Please help. My computer is running extremely slow and it is almost brand new. I have scanned for viruses using Spybot and Spyware Doctor. Nothing unusual pops up. However, when I look at the CPU usage in the Task manager it will go from 5% upwards of 100% and change by the second. Since the CPU usage is so high I imagine this is why my computer will stall or be very slow opening up programs or executing any functions. I had help once where I used HiJack This and someone showed me what to delete to clean my computer. Can someone walk me through this? Or ss there any freeware available to help with this problem or does anyone have any suggestions. I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 which is using Windows XP operating system. Thank you very much in advance.

A:elevated CPU usage

Hi jmontcri,

Check what programs are running (cntr-alt-del) will
bring up the task manager. Check "applications".

You should also check completely for spyware and
virii.

And your virtual memory is probably "thrashing", constantly
re-sizing. You should set it to what would be a "static"
size.

Right click on My Computer. Hit "Properties". In the upper right
you will see "Advanced", then hit "settings", under "virtual
memory". Go to "Advanced". You can choose which drive
to use and you can re-set it manually. Hit "change"

If you have lots of RAM, set it for 400 Meg low, 400 meg
high. Hit set, apply and go out. You will need to reboot.
This should improve speed significantly.

Hello sparhawk,

If you didn't have the user account when the image was created, then that would be why the account doesn't exist now.

If the Reset to defaults option is grayed out in Winaero User List Enabler, then that means you already are using the default settings. You may have undone your previous setting when you did the system image recovery.

Hi All,

I am writing a dos batch file for windows7 and it has many commands which need elevated access to run. For elevation I am using elevate.exe. I am doing like below -

set Elevation=elevate -wait cmd.exe /c
%Elevation% "cd /d %CD% && xcopy /E /Y ...."
%Elevation% "cd /d %CD% && command 2 .."
%Elevation% "cd /d %CD% && command 3 .."
%Elevation% "cd /d %CD% && command 4 .."
.....

My script calls elevate for cmd and then "cd /d %CD% for each command as elevate changes the working path to /system32 I am forced to change the directory every time I run elevate. It also prompts user for "UAC" dialog for each elevate command, so for ten such command UAC prompts will come 10 times . Commands I am using are mix of DOS command(like xcopy, diskpart etc) and some other 3rd party executable. So there is two problem for which I need some help-

1. How to call elevate for cmd.exe once and run rest of the command in same elevated console.
2. How to change working directory once instead with every command. I think solution to first one will take care of this also.

When I am logged into a "standard" account, and choose to run a program as an "administrator" with the "run as" choice. Does it leave me running at an administrator level until I relog in or does it just run that program at that elevated privelage.
Thanks, Scott

A:[SOLVED] elevated privelages

Using the "run as administrator" option only runs the specified program as administrator. It does not change how you are logged in but only effects that one program. But note that by default programs inherit the rights of the parent process. If that one program you run as administrator opens others they will also have administrator rights that continue as long as they are running.

The purpose of the "run as administrator" option is to allow you to run an application with elevated privileges without the need of closing all open applications, logging out, then logging as an administrator.

There you see the command prompt shortcut as the first of a list of shortcuts. Right click it, choose properties from the list.
The property list will open, now choose Advanced and tick the "Run as Administrator" checkbox. Click Apply, Close. Done.

Now every time you run a command prompt you'll run it with administrative rights.

I have been trying to register a program I bought and they tell me I must be logged in as Admin.

When I try to get to the elevated CMD prompt I am entering: net user administrator /active:yes

I have also tried to use the other method using the Computer Management | Users method and enabling the account there. I don't see anything happening when I do this unless I have to reboot the machine, which I haven't tried.

The admin account is simply administrator and has not been renamed to something else and there is no password. I have used the CMD prompt method before and it worked fine now for some reason it won't.

This may/may not be relevant: I had a some major problems several months
ago with viruses - I tried to repair them on my own - I accidently
deleted part of the MasterBootRecord, so I had to re-format my drive
and start over.

Gringo helped me through that.

A:infected with ZeroAccess - need elevated help

Hello and welcome.  Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.”  Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I have a gadget that has buttons for hibernate and standby to run a shortcut. If I run the short cut directly by clicking it, it works, but if I try to run it from the html button, it will not acknowledge the run as administrator setting. I have tried it with VBScript and cannot change the powercfg - h state.

Here is the html:

HTML Code:
<a id="hibernate" onMouseOver='ShowTip(1,"Hibernate");' onMouseOut='HideTip(1);' href="../core/Hibernate.lnk" >
<img src="../images/Hibernate.png" border="0" width="20" height="20" >
<span id='tooltip1' class='tooltip'></span>
</a>
Here is the shortcut:

Code:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c powercfg -h on & rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

Here is the VBScript:

Code:
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.Run "%COMSPEC% /c POWERCFG /Hibernate ON"
WshShell.Run "rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll SetSuspendState Hibernate"

You are really going about it the hard way. Why reinvent the wheel. If you are just going to use Metro/Start, use Ctrl-Alt-Del, to pull up the Start Button. If using 8.1.1, it is already on the Metro/start screen. If always using the desktop, use Classic Shell or Start8 from Stardock.com

This is going to sound like a question from the Twilight Zone.

My comp was starting to run hot ( 45 - 55C under normal conditions.).

I was about to open case and do a thorough cleaning, but first cleaned the keyboard thoroughly.

I have been using the comp for over an hour and it now doesn't go over 35C!

I know it has to be a coincidence, Right??!!

A:Question about elevated heat

That's one of the weirder problems that I've seen, but yeah, I would chalk that up to coincidence.

Way too many Windows Explorer crashes and numerous odd behaviour for a relatively fresh clean W7P install. Just popped up after having went from free av to SpyBot's Pro having BitDefender as their flagship av aand used it for 3 days until oddball behaviour spooked me and so I unistalled SpyBot. Now poking around to see wuz up wit dis infernal machine. Tried trouble-shooting via clean boot, nothing pointed to nuttin. Went to use elevated command prompt (from me as admin) and yet the command or 'DOS' window seems to indicate I'm not an Admin, ref. see scr-shot. As I read and recall, the resulting command line (as an Admin) is supposed to read as C:\Windows\system32, no? Any wisdomeers out presently here?  Will hang a bit and den check back every hr or so.  Best regards and happ-e-trail otherwise, wguru

Hello- I started out just thinking I had Scorpion Saver on the computer and started a thread here.... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616295/scorpion-saver/page-2#entry4014917

After getting some assistance from Broni- he advised me that "There are some signs of ZeroAccess rootkit so you'll need elevated help."  And that I needed to follow this guide : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/
As he advised I started at step six on the guide posted above.

My computer is running rather slow.  I need my computer for work as I am working from home for Uhaul.   Whatever is going on is interfering with the VPN connection I have to have for work. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Not sure if this is the proper forum for my question, but here it goes.

I'm using a SSH server to remotely access my notebook from work. It works well for SFTP and remote command line access using a dedicated, non-admin, user account.

Problem is when I want to run something that requires admin permission under that connection. The server runs cmd.exe under the context of a non-admin user I've created for it, so I'm limited in what I can do. Question is, how can I "elevate" that remote command prompt to execute admin-only programs and commands? UAC of course will not help under that conditions.

Thanks!

A:Elevated command prompt over SSH

before you enter the command you can use the runas command first. You can also save the credentials so you dont have to enter them in every time.

Runas

Example:

Code:
runas /noprofile /user: username "command"
