New Lenovo X1 Extreme + Docking Station nightmare

Q: New Lenovo X1 Extreme + Docking Station nightmare

Hello, I'm an independent Software Developer and a new project required to buy a new notebook. Because I depend hardly on it I decided to buy one of the best I could find - I really can't afford any computer issues. So I ordered on 21 July a custom build Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen1. Unfortunately the notebook arrived DOA (could not be charged via power supply). I returned it immediately but still had to wait till 19. September to receive a replacement unit. This very long delay had a big drawback on my work. The new notebook seems to work good and I really like it. So I decided to order a Docking Station because I need 3 extern monitors, Lan cable etc.I ordered the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 230W (40AN0230EU). I connected both power supplies (230W AND 65W) and connected the Docking Station to the X1 Extreme. 3 Monitors worked well but the Notbook will not charge via Docking Station (but it charges using the notebook power supply). I got the Windows message that not enough power is delivered to the notebook. I installed the new Firmware (3.1.64) to the Dock and all new drivers, Firmware and Bios to the Notebook. Again I called the Lenovo Support. They sent me a new Docking station (without cables and power suplies ?!?). Still the same issue.Because the issue could be caused by a damaged power supply I returned the first ordered Docking Station to the vendor and purchased a new one from another vendor. Still the same issue.... I again called the Lenovo support and they sent me a new mainbord for the X1 Extreme. It was yesterday replaced by a Lenovo technician. Still same issue. He also could not give any solution for the charging problem. BUT we noticed that when replacing the 65W Docking power supply by the 135W power supply of the X1 Extreme the notebook will be charged. But the Docking station was delivered with a 65W supply and I don't want to replace it each time I have to take the notebook to a customer. The Docking station should work totally stationary and with the delivered components Today I called again the Lenovo Hotline (again about 1 hour waiting to be connected and telling the issue). She tells me that I should send the notebook to a service center.... It seems not to be possible to speek to a Lenovo technician to explain the whole issue. And the first level support seems not to be qualified to handle this issue. I cannot send the notebook again to a service center. I need it urgently and I don't think that there is any issue with it (charging perfectly with its power supply and/or the docking station when switching the power supply like described above). I already lost a lot of time (first order on 22 July) and I cannot explain the customer that he has to wait for more time until I can begin to work on the project. This issue already costs me a lot of money. And I initially orderd one of the best notebooks in order to prevent problems... Any ideas? I'm really absolutely desperated

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My X1 Extreme is experiencing an issue when re-connecting to a thunderbolt docking station (the one with two power adapters - 65W and 230W). I am unsure if this is a patch/firmware related issue, but my system is fully updated (Windows 1903) if that help. The problem only becomes apparent when the system is re-connected to the docking station. When the system is first booted, no problem at all, when undocked, also no problem. The problem comes on when I reconnect to the dock. Everything starts to lag to the point where even moving around an empty Notepad window is very choppy. The cursor, and input (typing) lags, opening and closing windows, etc. The system becomes so laggy that each time I reconnect to the docking station, I need to reboot to get back into a usable state. Does anyone experience a similar issue? Any idea how to resolve the problem?  I  appreciate any input.

Community: we just recently purchased a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme laptop and Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock. The Laptop is awesome but unfortunately we're on our second dicking station and wondering what we're doing wrong--or if we have a defect.  The docking station came with a 230W and 65W AC power cord, and the dock has both a 230W/170W port and 135W/65W power port. When the 230W cord is plugged into the 230W port, the dock doesn't turn on (nothing plugged in). When the 65W cord is plugged into the 135W/65W port, it lights up but no network when a laptop is plugged in or charge. The only way I get a light on the station is to plug the 230W cord into the 135W/65W port, and then when a laptop is plugged in I get network and charge. We contacted Lenovo and they sent a replacement as they admitted it was not working as it should. The second one also exhibits the exact same behavior and we are at a loss and ready to return for a refund.  I also don't want to plug a 230W power brick into a 135W/65W port for fear of overheating. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas, we'd like to hear them.  Thanks.

Hi, I read a lot of threads and tech dunce like myself is a bit overwhelmed. So please talk to me like i am a golden doodle  A week ago, I purchased the following:https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Yoga-720-12/p/88YG7000919i7 processor and 8 gig RAM I need a docking station recommendation for the following set up. 1. I am planning to buy a Tiny series desktop from Lenovo. This will be my at home stationary workstation.2. The link above is my mobile laptop as I commute in and out of NYC I need a powerful docking station which can take both the Tiny and the Yoga at the same time. Ideally, the tiny stays put forever and the yoga gets plugged in and out. And I am planning to deploy three monitors or if it is too complex, two.  So when both laptop and tiny desktop are docked, I want to be able to share the mouse, keyboard and the dual/triad monitors between both devices. I'm assuming there is a control which helps you shift from one device to another. Please recommend a docking station for this.

Hi,I have just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 720 with an accompanying Thinkpad USB-C dock. All is working wonderfully, including HDMI and USB ports, with the exception that the connection from the dock to the laptop is not charging my laptop. I understand that the Yoga might not be compatible, but I swear I have heard from others that this is not the case. Any help would be appreciated. I've tried to update everything with Lenovo System Update as well as firmware for the dock.

I have a W541 Thinkpad supplied by my employer and have had it for less than a year. Since day 1 i've been having issues with the docking station and I am finally fed up to the point of reaching out. Here are the following issues i have had. on occasion when docking and the laptop is on, it will power off (hard)when redocking and power is on my secondary monitory will have random pixels "sparkle" white on the screen and then about every 5 minutes the secondary display will shut off for about 10 seconds. Only putting the laptop to sleep and back will fix it.when docking (and regardless if power is off or on) one of either the laptops main display or my secondary monitor will not work. Sometimes redocking about 20 times will bring it back, sometimes not. Sometimes restarting the machine will work, and sometimes it will not.when docked, i have a MS wireless keyboard and mouse plugged into the dock. on occassion, they will loose connection with the computer. Unplugging the dongle and plugging it back in will resume operation but it will eventually cut out again. Only moving the dongle to a usb port on the laptop itself will resolve the issue. This is not a good solution as the dongle is not low profile.I recieved this laptop with windows 7 and have since upgraded to windows 10. These issues were happening on both versions of windows. No other modifications were made to the machine or its base software.  Please help as i'm frustrated to the point that I'm about to r... Read more

A:Lenovo Docking Station Problems (W series)

Your employer is going to let you return their supplied laptop for a refund or replacement from another brand for a unit that I am guessing you have used for more than half a year? o.0 On topic, Do you have any issues with the laptop itself when it is undocked?  From the sounds of it all problems appear to be docking related, so assuming the dock connector/port is free of all detrius that might cause issues, would suggest using the warranty to replace the dock as that certainly sounds to be the focal point of all your issues.

Hi there, I am using a Thinkpad T460s in a docking station and I have one external monitor attached with HDMI, the other one with VGA. They have run on 1920x1080 for two years now and all of a sudden one of the monitors cannot do more than 1280x1024 any more. Both monitors are exactly the same brand and type and the configuration has worked for quite a while. When I want to configure the lower resolutions monitor in Windows 10 or in the Intel console, the maximum resolution I get is 1280x1024 at 60p and the other monitor still runs on 1920x1080 at 60p what am I missing? Thank you!Michael

I'm looking for a list of docking stations compatible with my Lenovo thinkpad x240. I've tried a few "universal" ones but they seem to have issues connecting to my laptop (work device) due to, what I believe, the lack of a USB 3.0 connection on the laptop (the drivers seems to attempt to install but fail). So I'm really just looking for confirmation that there are docking stations out there that will work with this laptop. I've had a look at the Accessories and Options Compatibility Matrix (OCM) but that doesn't cover devices prior to 2016 apparently, which my model seems to fall into.

I have a user with a Thinkpad T460 (20FN003FUS) and a LenovoThinkpad Ultra Dock. We are using two external monitors: one going out from the VGA port of the docking station and one going out from the DisplayPort port and going through a DisplayPort - VGA adapter. The system worked fine at first. I had three displays: 1 being the laptop display and 2 and 3 being the dual monitors. The problem we're having is that when she undocks and redocks the laptop, both external monitors show in ScreenResolution as "Disconnected." If I change the multiple displays setting to "extend" I get an error message. If I undock the laptop, reboot it and then redock it, I can extend the displays, but it will stop working after the nextundock-redock cycle.I noticed the Lenovo has it's own multiple dispay management application. Should I be using that instead of Windows own native application?Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am starting a new job where I will b working from home. Before my orientation, I purchased two monitors for my home office. I am currently at my orientation for this week and was just provided my work laptop (ThinkPad T460). My question is: what docking station or stations are available for me to purchase where I can plug my two monitors into the station and be able to use both the monitors AND laptop at the same time. I am not the most techy person, so you may have to dumb down your responses. I've read several reviews on Lenovo docking stations and some people are saying their monitors will only work with the laptop shut or if the laptop is open then only one of the monitors will work. I want both monitors AND the laptop to be able to be used at the same time. Are you able to point me in the right direction to the right docking station or docking stations that would allow me to accomplish this for my home office? Thank you very much in advance!

Hello community, I have a problem with my T580. It is 4 months old, and I use it on my office desk with 2 monitors (the lid is closed) in the 95% of the time. This is the 2nd time now, when I take it home, switch on, but the backlight is not working. I have to use a torchlight to be able to log in. The attached monitor is working after the log-in, but the display is blank. Last time it fixed the problem, when I attached the USB stick of my Plantronics headset. Now it doesn't work. I'll try to attach the docking station later, but I have to pick it up from the office. Is this a known problem in the community, or am I the "lucky one"?

According to https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/docksSearch/ the Lenovo T480 20L6 laptop is compatible with the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station. However the docking station uses an entirely different power supply than the laptop (the old blocky rectangular one vs the newer mini rounded rectangle). The laptop itself fits on the docking station, but does not charge despite the docking station being plugged in. There are two connector slots on the dock that appear to be for the newer power supply, however neither of those provide power either. Is the docking station incorrectly listed as compatible when it really isn't, is there a hardware malfunction, or something else entirely?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P50 with ThinkPad Workstation Dock. There is no right choice for everyone.  I will say that right now, I am using a ThinkVision X1 (4k) and it looks really good to me.  I really like the sharp text.  The speakers aren't great, which is common for thin monitors.  The viewing angles are good.  I removed the stand and am using a VESA-mounted stand, which I like.

I understand that I can only use 2 display ports to do this so I intent to add a USB32DPPRO to achieve this, however my question is will they all run @ 60Hz. I have found this link which confirms I can run 2 displays at the resolution I'm after, but it does not mention anything about the refresh rate. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/migr-76767.  I'm just a little confisued as when you start looking at refresh rates on 4K for example, it says you can only run 1 screen @ 60Hz and if you add another screen the refresh rate drops to 30Hz for both. This is when used with the ThinkPad Workstation Dock 230W. More information here https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/acc100247. If anybody could help demistify this that would be great! I am using a NVIDIA Quardo K1000M as my GPU and the Inter(R) HD Graphics 4000 for the onbaord graphics. It's probably worth nothing that if I can get all 3 monitors to run @ 60Hz and 2560x1440 I would not need to use the lap... Read more

Hello, my two thinkvision monitors don't connect to my laptop using the dock and DP cables (new cables), but work fine when connected to laptop directly using USB-C cables. The dock was replaced and the new one has the same problem. Dock frimware was updated and all system updates have been done as of 09-30-2019 through vantage. Dock is connected to laptop through thunderbolt 3 port and some ports work fine, for instance, the mouse/keyboard I am using works on the laptop through the dongle when it is connected to the dock (so I think the dock hardware is OK, esp. given that it has been replaced- the DP ports are not likely to be both broken on two separate docks). Any suggestions? Equipment:- Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen 20QD- 135W ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station Type 40AJ- Display Port Cables (Insignia - new)- 2X ThinkVision P24h-10 monitors

Hi!
I have a Latitude E7740 that runs Ubuntu Xenial (16.04). I dock it to a "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-port II" docking station.
If I boot it in the docking station, everything works fine, and I find all my two DVI-connected monitors.
However, if I undock, then put it into the dock again while running, it fails to enable the screens. I'm using a script called autorandr for switching between display modes - it uses xrandr. It tries to run:
xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal
But the X server responds with:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)  Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)  Serial number of failed request: 48  Current serial number in output stream: 48
Running this exact command after booting in the dock is doing the right thing, but after undocking then docking, it doesn't work.
Any ideas here? I have updated to the latest BIOS version.
Problem also reported in launchpad with lot's of debug info, here:

Autorandr script is here: github.com/.../
