I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 laptops. My "old" one I bought direct from Dell in 2012, the "new" one, advertised as an "Inspiron 17R 7720 Special Edition",  I bought on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. I still have the original paperwork for the old one from when I purchased it from Dell and there is no mention of "Special Edition" in the paperwork. Both are identified only as "Inspiron 7720" on the label on the underside of the computer, and there are no "Special Edition" markings or labeling anywhere on the new computer.
Hardware is pretty much identical, 1TB Samsung ST1000LM024HN HDDs, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000/Nvidia GeForce GT 650M Video/3D graphics, Backlit Keyboard on both. The only hardware differences are the old computer has an Intel Core i7-3610QM processor (specified by me when I ordered the computer) and a 32GB mSATA SSD while the new computer has an Intel Core i5-3210M processor and no mSATA SSD.
So what makes the "Special Edition" so special? Is there REALLY anything different about "Special Edition" computers, or was that just some sort of marketing hype?

A:What is so special about an Inspiron 17R 7720 "Special Edition"?

The mSATA cache drive was one of the differentiators.  When that system was built, SSDs were appreciably more expensive than they are now.

Hello, I just bought a book on C++ programming (C++ all in one desk reference for dummies) and I've been having some trouble with the included compiler. The compiler is Dev-C++ v.5 and I am having a lot of trouble with it. In the book, they want you to make a new project that is a console application. The code that they want you to type is:

#include <iostream>
#include <stdlib.h>

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
cout << "Hello, I am your computer talking." << endl;
system("PAUSE");
return 0;
}

The problem is, whenever I try to compile it, I get 70 errors( none of which are self-explanatory) Could someone please help me!

You have to stay with AMD unless you switch motherboards because AMD and Pentium use different sockets.

Look at the book that came with your motherboard and that will tell you what processors it will support.

If it was me I would just upgrade the motherboard as well.

-EVGA 8800 GTX
-2GB DDR2 RAM
-74GB RAPTOR HDD
-COOLER MASTER HYPER 212 CPU COOLER

After operating it on xp pro, i tested out a few games "The Witcher" & "Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare". Played well with maxed out settings on a 22"

Now i know almost nothing about ocing,
except that i oced the gtx's fan to run at 100%.

Minutes ago after further reading about all the wonders
of building your own pc, i found out certain components
that i had mismatched..such as the q6600 n the 680i.

Please let me know what are the disadvantages of my new

if they're worth the upgrade in the future.

Thanks in advance for any pointers and advise.

Hi im like just learning C++ and i decided to take a big leap by going from knowing how to use cout to making command line parameters.

So i tried this..
Code:
#include <cstdlib>
#include <iostream>

/* int Add (char x,char y)
{
return(x+y);
}

*/

int main(int argc, int argv[])

{

using std::cout;
using std::endl;

cout << argv[0]+argv[1] << endl;
}
And yes, the commented part was going to be a function but i couldnt get it to work so i just commented it for later experimentation. So when i run this by typing in "adder.exe 1 2"
i get an output of "8013972". can someone tell me what im doing wrong?
its probably something stupid that i missed.

Hi beansbrian1986,

Sorry I cannot help solve the problem BUT I can help you avoid another one I think!
Please edit your post to remove your e-mail address. There are "spambots" that trawl the ether looking for e-mail addresses that they will then bombard with junk.
Anyone who can help you will post their reply in this thread.

Hope this helps?

Hi, 1st timer on here looking so any advice/opinions sorry if this maybe is obvious and i waffle on a bit.
So i have a just got seagate expansions 320gb usb external drive doesnt need software for it to work and i have simply drag & dropped my 25gb music and 35gb vids folders onto it , i just click on external drive from "my computer" and everything works fine it all shows up and plays ok.

Question 1
if i now want to save/add more stuff to these "original" folders that are on my PC, and this is important as i don't want have to create new music/vids folders, how do they update on the external drive without having to copy over previous of data already on external drive as obviously i just want to update the extra new music/vids as i get them?

Question 2
I also tried the vista backup for everthing in "My Documents" and it has saved everything as winRars and just numbered them as "backup files" ie 1,2,3,4 etc etc up to 285 so i have go thru winrar process as i have no idea until i open them exactly whats in them, is this normal or i have missed something

thanks in advance for any replies, remember im new at this so no laughing

hello
I can help with question #1, If you try to put the same file in, then a window will pop up warning you that one already exists and will give options on what to do...

choose the option for "no files are to be moved"(something along those lines).

There is also a little box on the bottom of the warning that says " do this for the remaining files", make sure you put a check in that box!!

good luck

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Is there a way of finding a precise time and date when an e-mail message has been read in Outlook 2000? (does it date stamp a message?)

I need to prove when someone read a message, but the sender didnt use a read receipt! Client is using Outlook 2000, and standard setup using a POP account and PST/OST files.

Any cool utils to read contents of these files, and time date stamp individual messages?

Thanks in Advance.

Hey.
I am thinking of installing another 1 GB of ram into my computer to boost the performance.
I got an ABIT AN8 SLI motherboard that currently has 2x512MB PC3200 sticks of ram.
Should i just buy another 2x512 of the same brand?

Or can i get a 1gb stick?
Im not to sure what to get. Im guessing i need the 3200 DDR ram again?

Will my motherboard accept the 4 sticks?

Some website says my board "The four DDR memory slots support a maximum of 4GB memory at PC3200, in dual channel. ABIT has arranged the slots in a two black, two red arrangement to indicate that plugging your DIMM pair into the same coloured slots will give you a dual channel memory configuration."

I have no idea what dual channel ram is.

Please Help.

Thanks alot.

Hi

Please upload the actual crash dump files with next reply. To do that first disable "User Account Control" and reboot the machine. Then open "C:\Windows\Minidump" folder. You will see several ".dmp" files in there. Copy all of them and compress using "7-zip" ( http://www.7-zip.org/ ) to reduce the size greatly. Then attach them with next reply using "More Reply Options --> Attach files ".

Pardon me if I use the incorrect terms , but I'll do my best .
My computer was purchased about 2 years ago & has been excellent up until about a month ago .
I will include all info i'm aware of & let you sift through to see what's relevant .
I've included a screen-shot of my system & will try to explain as best I can .
I've been told to use only windows defender & firewall & have no other protection .
I let windows do all the updates & cleaning automatically .
I've never run any "cleaner " of any sort until yesterday when ( after reading this site ) downloaded & ran SuperAnti Spyware ( free ) .
This ^ helped greatly !
Is there any other " cleaner " i should be using ?

Problems :
1) Web pages load slowly ( until I used the above cleaner )

Any help will be greatly appreciated & if I failed to include something , please feel free to speak to me as you would a 2 year old . Because when it comes to this kind of stuff , that's what I feel like .

A:Newb to terms

Download, update, and run MalwareBytes Anti-malware. It's an on-demand (this means it does NOT run in the background, it only runs when commanded) anti-malware scanner that is a good complement to Windows Defender. It's found here ... http://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/ . Just download the Free version.

Now, your video card is low-end, but if you're not doing heavy gaming, it's more than adequate.

Hi all

Im coming from a linux background -- just installed a win 7 ultimate 64 bit on my xps studio 16. some basic questions.

1) When I close the lid, then open, i get what i think is a BSOD with a message to the effect of 'windows has encountered an issue and is shutting down' --- is there something left on the disk that i can use to determine exactly what the issue is?

One of the exciting things about coming from linux is that I thought suspend would work better....

2) Is there any must have software? I already installed switcher and dexpot to get facsimiles of some of the UI features I am more used to.

3) Are there any good terminal apps?

Thanx in advance...

If this is a desktop computer then go with the BIOS password and if you're really scared that someone might open the case and reset the CMOS then buy some computer case lock.

The newb has a question...

I am trying to copy a data disk to my hard drive at work. This data disk has some pdf data sheets along with a flash program that serves as a main menu for navigating through the data. It also has software on the cd, and to install the software you click on a button on the flash "main menu" and it boots up the installation software.

Now, I have copied the cd to the harddrive and everything works except for the installation of the program. When you click the button it looks for the installation files, but its looking at the directory C:\data sheets. If I copy the files into C:\data sheets, the setup program will run.

Is there a way that I can trick the setup program into running the files from their new subdirectory C:\my documents\cd info\data sheets? or am I stuck having to copy them directly in the C:\ directory.

My point of this is I want to put this whole cd onto my own cd. Im trying to add several cd's of the same type to one cd, so you can put one cd in your drive and install several of these types of programs.

Sorry for writing a book!! Here's cliffs:

-copied the cd to the harddrive

-everything works except for setup program

-setup is looking for files in c:\data sheets when I want it to look in c:\mydocs\data sheets

-can I trick the setup program into thinking that the files it is looking for are actually in C:\ without actually putting the files there?

Thanks

So I'm assembling my first computer, got the case, got the mobo got the cpu.

2 questions

The case came with a mapping of the chords, however it does not tell me which is the positive wire and which is the negative wire for any of the things. Each plugin has a white wire and only one of them is oficially printed as negative.... are all the white wires the negative side?

2 (probably the more important question) my CPU came with a heat sink. I have taken great care to keep the bottom in the packaging as it appears to have some kind of film on a square inside. Is this pre-applied heat paste? is it okay to take it out of the packaging and apply it directly to the cpu? maybe slide it around a little to make sure that the whole top gets a coating or just set it ontop?

you guys are so helpful ^_^ thanks for all your prior responses!

A:Newb question, sorry

it would be helpful if you described the brand and model of your equipment. Also please don't apologize for posting - it's annoying. All of us were new at one time.

I just moved to suburbia hell and had to change up all my network stuff once again. So when I got here, a friend setup everything for me (or so I thought). The network here works perfectly fine with the 2 laptops on it, they connect whenever they are turned on no problem.

Mine is a diff story, when I search for all the networks in range, it wants to connect to the ones that I cant connect to. The network here has no security or network key, I just made it the preferred network to connect to and I checked everything I thought I needed to. I have a wireless card in my box and it takes forever (sometimes not at all) to connect. Can anyone suggest anything? I really want it to NOT connect to the neighbors stuff...can someone help me fix this and get these two components talking plz?

Good evening all,

I have just installed Vista 64 and am now having trouble connecting to my iMac, I have connected to my sons machine running XP after changing to Workgroup from MSHome.

The Mac picked both machines when they were running XP but now I cannot connect to my PC - it sees the Mac but with no name, just the icon.

The Mac now will connect to my boys machine when I select MShome but not workgroup (I hope this makes sense) but will not see my PC at all, not in workgroup or Mshome.

Any help would be most apprciated but please if you reply please in idiot guide if you can!.

Thanks in advance

Danny

A:Could be a newb question!

Here's a configuration to simply connect two machines and share data between them, This configuration does not include Internet Connection sharing.

Configure the machines as follows.

PC #1:
IP address: 192.168.9.1
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

PC #2:
IP address: 192.168.9.2
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses blank.

Make sure any firewalls are configured to put the 192.168.9.x subnet in the trusted zone.

Finally, you'll have to enable fine/print sharing on the machines and actually share one or more folders or drives.

Here's a page that describes the process in detail: http://www.howtodothings.com/computers-internet/how-to-connect-2-pcs-directly

Hi all, please forgive me if this has been asked 100 times before. Just joined this board and after googling this question a thousand times and seeing topics 3 yrs or older I felt I need to ask you all.

I am in the process of building a new system. I bought an ASUS Crosshair mobo which has 6 Sata controllers and 1 IDE controller. I plan on putting a AMD 64 X2 5000 processor in it (when it comes available with a decent price tag).

My system I have now, I only have IDE drives installed. I have my main and a secondary I use for storage and video editing. I would like to have the same set-up I am currently using with the SATA Drives rather than IDE. The mobo only having 1 IDE port I would need that for my optical drives.

Well, I have been reading about having to use the F6 function in order for the OS to be installed on the SATA Drive. I plan on using XP 64 bit for the install. What I am wondering is, even after a few years of SATA being out do I still need to do this? It would seem that after all this time with these new drives we would be able to install windows without using the out-dated floppy (which I don't own) on newer systems. I don't know, maybe since all the info I have read is rather old it has changed.

If someone could tell me if I would be able to plug in the SATA drive and do a normal OS install without having to go through the whole process of making a floppy disk I would be happy. Just seems to me that the newer systems would allow you to... Read more

In a nutshell, here is the story:

Months ago my machine began a series of involunatary re-boots. It got worse, and at last would no longer boot. The C drive was definitely corrupted, and after some looking about, I realized that all of the outlets in my bedroom (in a rented house) had line faults.

I replaced the HD, PSU, and RAM. Checked things out in the BIOS, and all looked well. Unforunately, I cannot install Windows. After dozens of attempts, including using another copy of XP, I am still without an OS. The install failure is inconsistant, with XP freezing at various points in the "setup is loading files" process.

So, my first question is, what can I do at this point? My plan is to take my CPU, new HD, and an optical drive for testing. If all of these function well, then I would assume that something is wrong with the MoBGood logic?

Second question: If it turns out that the MoBo, one or more HDs, the PSU, and other HW were corrupted, is there enough circumstantial evidence that bad wiring has caused the issue(s) that I could ask my landlord to cut me a deal on rent to compensate me for the amount of money I will have to spend to repair this stuff? I'm not talking court here, just a friendly request based on reasonable evidence.

Thanks,
FF

p.s. - I have tried the following methods for installing XP: removed all non-essential HW. Installing to a HD in two different SATA ports, and two different IDE ports. I have put in new RAM, and a new PSU. I have att... Read more

I've been having a problem for a few days now. When I use IE and type an address I've been to before (e.g. nutraplanet.com) it says its non-existent, even though I can access it on other computers. Also, when I use a search engine, less than half the links work to what they're specified as. When I click on most links, it automatically redirects me to other sites completely unrelated. I tried deleting cookies and temp internet files but it doesn't help. I have avg virus scan, but when I try to scan certain folders, avg for some reason, just stops the scan without saying anything, it just ends. I tried going into that folder to see if I could find a corrupt file or something and I can't see anything amiss. Also, most times when I try to look into the folder (I believe its the Local Settings folder) I get an error report or it freezes. Although a couple of times I've been able to look through it. This is seriously bothering me and I think I have a virus, it sure acts like it, and I can't use avg because for some reason it just stops the scanning process. Any help would be much appreciated before more damage is done...
