Older laptops - Quality Replacement Battery or Alternative

Q: Older laptops - Quality Replacement Battery or Alternative

Hello,
I have a very functional 5-yr old Inspiron 15z 5523 with a dying battery. Sadly, Dell no-longer offers replacement batteries for this unit and the aftermarket sources are hit-or-miss for quality. Are there any known retailers offering reliable products or is there an external power pack that could substitute?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The existing batter will no longer charge. It is a Li-ion PA3191U-5BRS - 10.8V 4700 mAh. I have an almost new replacement battery for my earlier Portege with idenitcal fittings but with 10.8V 4600mAh. It is not a Toshiba model and states that it is to replace PA3176U-2BRS. Can I use it in my M700 without risk of damage or reduced performance?

A:Portege M700 - Battery replacement - will alternative work?

Hello

To be honest I doubt that it will work because the specifications are different.
In your case I wouldn?t try it, in worst case you destroy the computer.

It would be better if you buy a new battery with the exact specifications. Authorized service provider in your country can make you an offer for this.

Hello. I've yet to have an issue with my HP 17 but as all people who use their laptops on a daily basis, the battery will inevitably die. However, ordering this model back in June of 2012, I was excited to have spent the +2000 of money for a decked out laptop I know I could trust for 5+ years. Down the road, no issues and loving it! However its now time for the battery to be replaced cause it can barely keep a charge for 20 min. I order a new HP 17 battery and while it seemed weird in shape, I thought it would fit. Boy was I wrong! It was for a newer HP Envy 17 and returning it here these upcoming days and now I'm searching and seeing there is no spport for this battery anymore. Like, at all. I'm looking and seeing it for astronomical prices and I can't justify that to be honest. It says the spare battery "657503-001 CT: 6CDYHO7BB2TORE" is no longer being made. I find this very frustrating for a company to change the design (apparently it happened in 2014 or so) and abandon those who spent a large sum on their comuter just to have it completely absolete in 4 years. My coverage went out in 2014 when I had no issues with the laptop or the battery and now that the only issue is the battery and I can't even find it, I feel like I seriously don't want to come back to this company for my laptop usage. Especially if I am going to be charged money just to talk to them for just a simple battery replacemnt that takes less than 5 min. I've seen this take WEEKS once sent in due to not fi... Read more

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

After having investigated the situation for the sake of people around me, it appears that the best laptops, as far as quality is concerned, are Asus, Toshiba and Sony. Lenovo dropped a bit after their agreement with IBM came to an end.

Dell and HP are very average today, in the same league as Acer (competition is tough). Packard Bell and Fujitsu are bad.

I agree with Asus and Toshiba but would not put Sony in the same category.

So in a few months I'll be buying a pair of labtops, my main concern is power. I want labtops that aren't going to keel over and die. And aren't cluttered with a bunch of Salesware (All those annoying ****ing programs you didn't want in the first place, that try to activate/force you to pay to get them to run) that come on your comp when you get it.

I'd like to keep one of the labtops below 900$, I'm not necessarily looking for something that can run WoW all settings high, but I don't want absolute ****e either. It has to last a few years.

The second one, would be somewhere in the range of $1000 to $1500

And I'd prefer a long-term warranty on the both of them. Any recommendations guys?

Sites maybe, certain make & models of labtops offered by the big computer corps. Dell/Gateway etc.

Have a L501x that has been great (except for the USB 3 issues (that I knew about before buying thanks to Internet Forums)) but now is time to look around for a replacement.
I can find websites that compare power of processors (i7-740 QM vs today's Intel processors) and I can find the speed of memory (2010 vs today) but can't find a simple metric to compare old and new.
I know there is not one simple number (today's laptop is X times better) but you would think there would be summaries instead of wading thru benchmarks?
On the other hand seem like processor changes have been striving for less power consumption rather than throughput???

A:Apples and Oranges, Older Dell Laptops compared to Newer Models...

That would be correct - there simply hasn't been a major leap in CPU horsepower, but current CPUs are more efficient and run as well or better as older ones, consuming far less power and generating far less heat than older ones did.  There really isn't a single metric that indicates overall performance - just about anything at the i5 or equivalent or faster is capable of most functions in a mainstream system.  Avoid the very low power CPUs (Celeron/sub-i3s) and watch the video requirements and you can't go far wrong with any mainstream CPU.
Now that AMD is fielding more efficient CPUs that run as well or better than Intel's out of the gate (and which will find their way into mobile systems soon), Intel will be forced to follow suit just as it was the last time AMD caught up/surpassed Intel -- so the situation may soon change (again).

I have an eMachines PC which I purchased back in 2001. It has a 600 Mhz Celeron processor in it currently, and over the past few years, I've upgraded the RAM and hard drives to turn it into a fairly nice PC. It has always been very reliable, so I don't see any reason to buy a new one if I could just upgrade the processor in mine. I realize that system bus will limit how fast this PC will operate, but I have also heard that their are limitations on the maximum speed that could be installed, even if you're using the correct CPU format (slot 1, socket 370, etc.). Anybody know how to determine the fastest CPU that I could install in this PC? I know mine is a socket 370, and they make Celeron socket 370's all the way up to 1.4 Ghz, but I don't know if my system would accept a 1.4 Ghz CPU? Please don't respond telling me just to buy a new PC. Thanks!

Howdy...so ive been driving myself nuts researching explorer alternatives.
I love "Explorer XP" because it automatically shows folder size.
Which is pretty much my main thing im looking for....folder size.
Ive got a bazillion folders and subfolders...im a sorting / organization nut of sorts
But i know there's better options...so here i am..

A app that actually offers the option to take over as the default file explorer is preffered.
Like directory opus does. No more default windows explorer.
And something that calculates / shows folder sizes.

Other than those two things, im not too picky.
Dont have to be free, but free is always nice.
But some apps are just worth buying if all goes well in the trial.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Looking for suggestions from people currently using a explorer replacement...no review's and links to blog and whatnot. Ive already when through my fair share the last 3 hours...

I hope this goes here - I guess technically this is a hardware issue, but...

So I found out today that the ACDC adapter for my sister's laptop, an Acer Aspire 5315 ICL50, just... Stopped working. Dunno why. Doesn't work plugged into the outlet from any of the power cords we have that fit. This is important because the laptop is so old, the battery lasts about ten minutes on max battery life power settings with a full charge. Basically, they've used it for the last three years or so just leaving it plugged in all the time.

The problem is, I can't tell what I need to replace it with. The ACDC adapter has a part number of SADP-65KB D, but looking that number up gets me a whole lot of hits for adapters that look nothing like the one that we got with the laptop, all made for different companies/manufacturers. There's another number on the adapter under a bar code sticker - ADT AP0650101373509E5FP101, but searching that on Google gets me no hits at all. I'm confused because the results I get searching for 'SADP-65KB D' all seem to list similar numbers on the list of 'compatible systems', but that number doesn't seem to exist at all.

So until I get a replacement identified and ordered, my nephews are without a computer to use. Can anyone point me to a proper replacement - or at least tell me how to go about finding a proper replacement?
This is the closest I've come to identifying an adapter that has a similar plug, but ... Read more

Is it generally accepted that laptop batteries in 2015 won't crap out if I don't wait until the 10% warning to charge it? The laptop is extremely new, just released in 2015 so all the latest stuff, 5th gen i7 etc.

Ie my iPhone 6 I charge it full to 100% every night, but by the time I go to bed next day its only at 60%, I rarely/never wait for it to die before I charge it... Is it safe to say the same can be done with laptops nowadays?

A:Should I be worrying about my laptops battery?

From what I know and my experience it is best to drain them down to 10-20% about once a month to keep them healthy but the rest of the time do as you want and recharge often to 100%.

I'm just now buying a budget minded digital camera (Kodak CX7430) and I want to buy an SD memory card for it.

The camera will not get a great deal of use.

I am having trouble knowing how much advantage a higher volumn card has over a lesser one. I'm thinking that a 128 or 256 MB card will fill my needs, but I'm having trouble knowing how much advantage the 256 will have over the 128.

And I see that, for example, a 256 MB SD card can cost as little as $18 and as much as $90, maybe more. I don't know how much advantage a more expensive card is over a budget one.

I'm also confused about how expensive a battery to buy. For example, there is one from WalMart, with a charger, that is 1800 whatever the measure is. But I read that I can get as high as 2300 or even 2500. I'm wondering if 1800 is fine for a budget item (one complaint I have is that many of the ads for chargers don't say what the number is for the batteries that come with it.)

I'd appreciate any information you might have. If you know of a source that tutors someone like me on these questions, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Thank, grandpaw7

I have a Dell Vostro A860 laptop (1.5 years old) Vista O/S. Two days ago when attempting to boot it up it showed a black screen and it read "Critical low battery, Hit F-1 to continue". Whe I did, it shut down. Upon hitting the pwr button again, nothing would happen. Removing the battery and re-installing then hitting pwr button allows the start up, however 4 seconds into it, it just shuts down. I have tried with the power cord plugged in, unpluged. Will not boot either way.

Here is a strange thing. I bought 2 of these Dells for family gifts at Christmas 2008. Yesturday the other A860 did the same thing. What are the odds of that? The other one I unplugged the power cord to try on the other to ensure it was not a bad charger cord, and if that was the problem. When I pluged back in the battery icon just kept discharging and then shut off. I rebboted and all came back up for a bit then shut down. It now does the 4 second atempt and then shuts down dead.

Further strange, my next door neighbor called and said that they were having a problem with thei laptop, it was, yes you guessed it, showing Critical low battery, Hit F-1 to continue. Could this be a virus? I know we and neighbor a month ago had that AV Security virus, but we both removed using malware removal tools, and the systems have been running fine. Hi all, just acquired an old hp compaq nx 9020 from a friend who's been upgraded by his employer. It seems to beep periodically but only when it's plugged into the mains. Its a BIOS kind of beep, not windows based. It's 3 or 4 quick beeps rising in pitch.

I'm not sure why but I have a hunch it's something to do with a full battery notice since I can't find anything wrong with the machine. I also think it only happens when the machine is idle, not whilst I'm using it. Could it be a "hey, I'm plugged into the mains and switched on" reminder?

I've fiddled with power settings for mains mode with no effect and there's no BIOS options relating to it, hardly any BIOS options at all in fact. I'd like to stop the beep because I often leave the machine running as a jukebox and keep having tunes spoiled by this random beep.

Any ideas?

Hi,
I have a XPS 13 (9350) and recently discovered that my trackpad & certain keys were slowly being raised out of place due to a swollen battery. The laptop is already out of warranty by a few months. As a precaution, I removed the battery and have been working off AC ever since.
As an alternative to purchasing a new internal battery, would the Dell Power Companion (12000 mAh - PW7015M) be a suitable alternative? Would I be able to plug this accessory into my battery-less laptop? Or do you need an actual functioning internal battery installed? I'm only mobile (without AC) for a few hours per month so carrying an additional accessory around wouldn't be a big concern for me
Thanks,

"Are laptops running Windows 7 known to crash (go to a recovery console) when they reboot close to the end of their battery power?"

I have a laptop that has been experiencing BIOS / SSD firmware issues, and I am now performing extensive testing on it in the form of automatically restarting it every 5 minutes. To achieve the 5 minute restarts I am employing a program called psshutdown, which I have written a batch script for, and set the batch script to run every five minutes after login through the Windows Task Scheduler.

So far the laptop has gone to a "recovery" screen on two occasions - on both of these occasions the recovery console has restored the computer back to the last System Restore Point. On both occasions the battery was very low. On one occasion the laptop was running from battery only, and on the other it was plugged into AC power (but the battery was severely depleted).

I am contemplating performing this test on a known "healthy" laptop to see if it behaves the same way, but thought it best to get some opinions before proceeding.

Any thoughts / contributions are appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

A:Do laptops crash regularly when rebooted with a depleted battery?

If the computer is shutting down because of power issues several times in a row, then it will corrupt the Windows files.
Always run the tests with the power adapter attached. If you battery is depleted, remove it for testing purposes.

In my experience dealing with many Windows 7 machines whose owners aren't too keen on charging
batteries, I haven't seen a recovery console crash as you describe. However, I have seen laptops revert to the "resume.." menu after the laptop was restarted due to a drained battery. A recovery screen reboot would be indicative of a software/OS issue in most cases wouldn't it?

It seems that HP Laptops do not show battery time left with Vista but only percentage %...

Battery time remaining not displayed in Vista on my Compaq f756nr - TechSpot Troubleshooting

Vista wont caluclate remaining battery time : Ink, Windows Touch, and Other Tablet PC Development : Software Development for Windows Client : MSDN Forums

Battery meter not showing time remaining

...maybe HP doesn't want to show how long will their battery last in their laptops?
Why don't they release updated drivers/bios to correct this?

Here is how it should be (Acer, Dell, Lenovo etc. laptops do, I've read):

My ladyfriend is having battery problems with her HP ze4610 laptop running XP Home.
She keeps it plugged into the A/C wall outlet about 99% of the time, so shouldn't her battery be charged all the way when she uses it the other short 1% times that it is unplugged and running on battery? The computer is not that old, a year, maybe.

She said the other night while unplugged and doing some important work on it for a few short hours(2 or 3, maybe), a pop-up message came up saying it was shutting down from lack of power and to save her data, or it would be lost(which she LUCKILY was able to do before it shut down very quickly).

My question is....is there an utility on her HP that can tell her how well her on-board charger is functioning while the laptop is plugged in? (It must not be charging too well, and we'd like to know how well)
And tell her how much the battery is charged at times it is unplugged?

thanks,
jA

Iv recently encountered the dreaded Plugged-In not charging Error
Upon Boot
ALERT! AC power wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Iv come to the conclusion its the module that determines the adapter and wattage type.
As iv tested it with known working chargers and batteries.
Can anyone *** me with this knowledge or allow me to get a schematic for the mother board?

My M3800 touch pad began being very difficult to use about 6mos ago.  I also started to get messages about the battery needs replaced soon.  Then a few weeks ago, my internal clock started to lose time (not only lose time but start going backwards!)
So, I ordered a replacement battery, a CMOS battery to correct the loss of clock time and Dell did not have a replacement avail for the mouse pad.  Good that they didn't.
When I took out the old battery I saw that it was 'ballooning' out or puffy, which is what a bad battery will do somethimes when it needs replaced.  Compared to the new battery I was installing, the old one was approx 50% thicker than the new one due to this ballooning effect.
When I put everything back together, the clock worked (yeah! that was such a pain!) and now my mouse pad works like new!  Apparently the puffy battery was putting pressure on the mouse pad from inside (battery sits just under mouse pad).
Everything's good now!  Although, I won't mention the part about when I first put it back together I got the 4-beep alarm - long story short, one of the memory cards got trashed during the repair.  Not sure how but tested both 8gb cards by removing and switch slots and all worked when only the ;good; card was inserted into either slot and got 4beep alarm when bad card was inserted into either slot.  So just ordered a replacement 8gb card.  Ok, so I mentioned it....
