Windows takes two tries to find Microsoft Word files

Q: Windows takes two tries to find Microsoft Word files

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this problem, but I'll give it a try. I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop running Windows Vista. Very often, when I try to open a Word document (whether from Explorer or from within Word itself), Windows is unable to find it. Then I try a second time and the document opens with no problem.

I have not tried to isolate the specific conditions under which this happens. It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be irritating.

Any idea what to do? Do I need to change a setting someplace?

Thanks for your help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to open MS Word files in Windows 98. I do this by double clicking the file icon in My Computer, the open may fail (though not always) with an error msg saying that 'the file or one of it's components cannot be found'. If I go back to the My Computer screen and use the open command in the file menu it will probably (though not always) open the file. If the open attempt fails again I just keep alternating the open procedures and eventually it will open by one method or the other.
If I start MS Word and the file that I want is in the most recently opened files listed in the File menu, it will ALWAYS open regardless of whether it other open alternatives fail
Is this a registry problem?
Any suggestions how I can permanently fix it?

Hello Guys,

I need someone to help a girl out. Here is what the situation is:

1. I have Windows 7 with Microsoft Word downloaded on the computer.

2. I have a USB drive that has a bunch of reference materials on it and it is on drive G:

3. The name of the USB drive is called "Mary References"

4. When I open Microsoft Word it comes up to a folder called "My Documents" on drive C:

5 What I want to do is copy the USB references from G: drive so it will appear in Microsoft Word in the area that says My Documents. Then I won't have to use the USB drive each time, it will be copied on the C: Windows 7 program instead of being called My Documents.

Can anyone help me? I just can't get this windows 7 working correctly and don't know how to copy it from the G to the C drive.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me out.

I haven't had Microsoft Office 2013 a week now and I already am having problems with opening documents that are in Microsoft Word's native format (docx). The problem lies within Windows and not word it seems. While the icon for docx files show the Word 2013 icon, it refuses to open with Microsoft Word 2013. Windows tells me that it does not know how to open docx files. It worked flawlessly since its install last Wednesday downloaded right from Office.com with the user name that was provided to me by KVCC, the college I attend. Office 2013 licenses are provided to all students as of 2016. Not even a week later, it is messing up. Word can still open .doc & .odt files but not docx files. Microsoft word starter using windows 10 opens my files occasionally in read only format and I have tried just about every suggestion in your forum within my limited skills but I offer this in the hope it might help - I notice it is most likely to occur
if opening a file from within the software, if one steps outside and opens it from the desktop it is more unlikely to happen.  When previously using compatibility mode it did not happen but that did not like files that contained any downloaded pictures
with the hyperlink still active. When re-opening them subsequently they could not be edited until clicking on "edit now" which is why I used the

conversion option only to get this problem which is annoying and not good enough.

Since "upgrading" to Windows 10, I cannot find Microsoft Word.  Yesterday I was able to use "Search the Web and Windows", but search no longer works.   The Word icon under "Programs" is no longer there.   To even shut down the computer, I have to right-click on the windows icon and then click shut down, whereas previously (even for a few days after the upgrade) I would find it with a left click.    I should never have upgraded--this is infuriating!

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.
I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.
I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC.  However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).
I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... Hello, I'm not very good with computers so bare with me please :).

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since turned my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The second was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to delete or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank. I have also checked through the recycle bin, nothing.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have backed up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much.

When I click on a Word file or a shortcut to a file, no matter whether it's a .doc or a .docx file, Word opens and tells me that it cannot find the file (it also does this if Word is already open). However, if I click on the shortcut or file a second time, it opens without a problem. This is totally consistent. It happens every time. With new files and old files. It also happens with file links to attachments in Emails. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening?

Are you referring to AutoSave? This feature does not save your work, especially in regards to closing Word. It's generally there for when Word crashes, or your computer crashes, in conjunction with the Document Recovery aspect. Nothing can substitute a good Save. You could always write a macro to be placed in your Normal.dot ThisDocument module, that would basically save every-so-often for you. Hope I understood you right. Then again, I'm definitely not the foremost authority on Word.

Welcome to Seven Forums Kunwar Bedi. There are many additional ways to sort the files in a folder. You could experiment with those.

Right click an empty are in the folder> Sort by> More

You can choose from the extensive list such things as Date accessed, Date completed, Date created, Date last saved, etc.

Experiment and see if you can't find a choice, or combination that works for you.

I use a `pre-activated` version of Windows and this morning after to have rearmed it a few times in the past months it said that I had reached the maximum of my postpones. So I decided to go with a whole new stuff, then I formatted my SSD and made a fresh installation of W7 Pro 64.

Installation done, as usual my first thing to do is to establish the Internet connection to download AV and firewall. My conn here is wi-fi, so I set it up and the small bars icons told me that I was connected. However when I tried to navigate the browser just kept looking for pages forever. I tried to reinstall my wi-fi driver, removed and re-setup the connection, and nothing. Then my wife asked me to go to the supermarket. As I left computer on, when I came back I had a page not found on my screen, but just in case I pressed F5 and... page loaded!

Then I downloaded and installed my Firewall and AV with a couple other things and rebooted the PC. Guess what? No web browsing again. After a few attempts I figured out that whenever I reboot my computer it is longing around 2 minutes until `find` the Internet. But I don`t get any `!` sign over the small bars or something like that ? apparently everything is fine, it is just that it doesn`t find the web for a while.

One of two things will probably fix your problem:

First, pictures are not viewable in normal view. So make sure you're in Print layout (Word 2000) or Page layout (Word 97) under the View menu.

Second, you can turn the viewing of pictures off. You may need to turn it back on under Tools-Options-View tab (drawings).

Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me or shed some light on a repeated Microsoft Word error that I have received, following which I have lost some documents.  I have had some documents in my 'My Documents' folder for years (things like a journal that are ongoing, which I have worked on daily or weekly for years and have just saved as I have gone along).  A few weeks ago I was working on one of these and when I went to save I received a message that said "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error', and then 'Word failed reading from this file.  Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry", then "Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy' (please note I was not using a floppy disk).  Then my file completely disappeared.  I could not find it anywhere.  Luckily I had most of this backed up on a USB stick, but I was still really concerned.  Today this has happened again with another document.  I'm really worried - does anyone have any initial thoughts on what could be going on?  Please just ask if you have any questions or need additional information.
Thanks very much in advance!

Open Office files are the same as any other files in Windows. Files created in Open Office can definitely be saved and copied to a flash drive. It's very likely the user is just doing something wrong.

To save the file as an Office file:

As an alternative to Open Office I often recommend people simply use Google Docs. Office documents can be opened in Google Docs and edited and saved in any Office format.

source file or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly
installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

Please help me open this file, it is a work-related file, and I've tried so
many times already.

Thanking you in advance.

Was Office loaded on that machine at work?
If so it is my guess that one of two things is happening.

1) The Office dll that displays pictures is resident on the work network and is only loaded when it is needed - thus displaying that message.

2) A similar thing with the document that just the link (and thumbnail) to the pictures were included in the document. The actual pictures are still on the network.

I recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean. I am not sure where to go from here. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:.exe program files opening with Microsoft word by default

Hello Wingsfan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like your EXE file associations has been set wrong. You can download and merge the exe download in the tutorial below to restore all of the default associations and settings for the exe file extension.

A Word document suddenly changes into a 'read only' file which cannot be saved or deleted. I have 'saved' under different file names as instructed, but as a result I now have 10 versions of the document, 9 of which I don't want! The 'Help' file says go to 'Properties' and untick the 'read only' box. The boxes aren't ticked, so I still cannot delete. How do I delete these files?
