I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Office 2000: Work Installation Problem / Excel Read-Only Problem

For your Excel issue: Find the file in Windows Explorer, right click it and go to properties. Uncheck the Read Only box. If this does not work, open the spreadsheet in Excel and do a "Save As" and rename the document or overwrite the existing.

I'm running an HP Pavillion 750n with windows XP home. I'm trying to install microsoft Office 2000, and after working through much trouble with the font file names in C:/windows/fonts I'm now stuck because it cannot find a certain "MAPI.DLL," supposed to be located in C:/windows/system32. I looked there and found a file called "mapi32.dll" and I copied it, then renamed it MAPI.DLL and tried again, but it didn't recognize it. I've searched for a place to download it, and I can't find it. At dll-downloads.com it is only found under the category "windows 3.1." Any suggestions for where to download it? Thanks. If you need the exact error message that it gives, just ask, I'll post it, but I've got to go eat dinner now.

When sending a Excel attachment using Outlook 2000 the following occurs: After clicking on the attachment icon the message comes up indicating it wants to open the Office 2000 CD. Having inserted the CD it will not open. It also does the same if I try to open Excel from the program file.
I have tried to install Office 2000 service pack 3 and it will not complete because it asks for the Office 2000 SR-1 CD and of course it does not recognize the CD and won't open.
Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this attachment problem???

Hello,

I have just installed a fresh copy of XP Pro and am now attempting to install Office 2000 (Neither are genuine copies)

Midway through the installation a window entitled "windows file protection" pops up which reads:

"Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now."

The buttons available to press are retry, more information and cancel.

When i insert the cd i used to install XP Pro it tells me i've inserted the wrong CD- the same message comes up when i press "retry"

After clicking cancel to exit setup, i get the message entitled "installer information"- "Error 1933- The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files"

Any ideas on how to proceed would be welcome- And i would be very grateful if they were as simple as possible....step by step instructions would be perfect!

Many thanks

I get the following error message when trying to install Office 2000 Professional onto a PC running Windows XP Home:
"Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now."
I have tried inserting the Service Pack 2 CD I used to do the Windows install but this does not help. The computer tells me it is the wrong CD but I know it is correct. I have searched the internet with google and the Microsoft knowledge base but can find no solution that matches my problem. what is even stranger is that I have previously been able to run this software package on this PC (though it was orginally installed before service Pack 2 came out). I am reinstalling because I have had to completely reformat my hard drive and do a clean install of Windows XP. I have been able to reinstall all my software except Office 2000.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi all,

Office 2000 installation problem -
I followed the instructions and inserted my Product Key Number and then installed the various components, successfully, I thought.
I checked out each program, Excel, PowerPoint, etc and all were fine until I tried Word.
As soon as I opened Word a box came up requesting my Product Key Number. I entered it and was informed that the number was invalid. So I couldn't use Word.

What's going on? I've already installed Office 2000 Premium on my computer and wasn't asked for the Key number a second time. This time on a new hard disk (the previouse one crashed) with Windows XP I get this problem.
Can anyone help, please?

thanks

Hi ahmeds,

I run MS Office 2000 SR-1 Professional on WinXP Pro SP2, and whenever I have run into problems like this, I use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it, and then reinstall. I may have even downloaded some updates for it at the MS Office 2000 website - you should check it out for just such a problem fix. Goto: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/2484

MS Word should have been installed along with Office 2000, so by the indication you are getting it would appear that the MS Word installation did not complete successfully in some manner.

Need some expertise on this one.

When I launch Microsoft Excel I get a message that pops up

Microsoft Visual Basic Compile Error: Duplicate Option Statement.
Two Windows pop up on the screen.

One window has BdStart.RB This workbook code on title bar and the other one on title bar states BdStart.RBO Module.

Have to close on these windows to get back to the Excel title bar to open a new document.

Have tried numerous reinstallations.

A:Solved: Office 2000 Excel Launch Problem

Most likely, you've got some files in the XLSTART folder that don't belong there. Here's the steps:

1. Close Excel
2. Find the folder on your hard drive called XLSTART. Remove or delete any files in there.

-and/or-

1. Open Excel.
2. Go to Tools-Options, General tab. Remove any folder name under "Alternate startup location".
3. Close and reopen Excel.

One of those should take care of the problem.

Hello, please help, this is really bugging me.

Office 2000 works absolutely fine for quite a while, and then all of a sudden...

When I click on the Office Assistant button or try to use a wizard I get this error message:

There was a problem starting the Office Assistant. Would you like to try reinstalling it?

This happens across all Office apps, and just happened out of the blue, one day, I have no idea why!

I noticed the Office Assistant wasn't coming up, and click on it, then got these problems.

When I click yes to the error, it does try to reinstall, but in the end gives me another message:

The Office Assistant could not be started. Please repair the Assistant by running Office 2000 setup and selecting "Repair Office 2000".

I then try this to no avail. Also I have looked on Microsoft support and have overwritten my oleaut32.dll file, then reinstalled Office as suggested, no improvement. Also tried to set the Office Assistant to run from my computer instead of CD-ROM as shown in another Microsoft support artice, but it was already set to run from my computer, so Office Assistant still doesn't work!!!

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks guys, love this forum.

I have been making daily additions to an Excel worksheet. Suddenly it adopted a "read only" status and I can no longer make entries into same. When I move the cursor around all it will do is highlight. How can I restore this chart to normalcy?

A:Read Only problem in Excel

Close the Excel file, view it in its folder, right click it and select Properties, un-check Read Only. Also, if the workbook is already open by another user you will get the warning upon opening the file that it is in use by another person and give you the option of opening as read only.

The only other thing I can think of is that you are opening this from a CD/DVD drive, whereas you cannot save to; you must burn to these drives and cannot exchange data traditionally as you would on a hard [disc] drive.

hey guys and girls. hopefully you will be able to help me. i've spent all day today googling and trying all suggestions to no avail.

i had windows xp pro sp3 installed on a 200GB SATA drive that started failing. so I added a 500GB SATA drive to the same channel, but as master. i also have a dvd burner and another hard drive, so when i installed windows on the new (500gb) drive this is how it was all setup

DVD-drive (channel 1 master)
IDE 80GB HDD (channel 1 slave) - media files only

500GB SATA hdd (channel 2 master) - empty, new drive
200GB sata hdd (channel 2 slave) - windows xp still installed

i went ahead and installed a new copy of windows xp to the new hard drive. everything went fine. after installation the boot screen showed two copies of windows, and the default (first) one was the NEW installation on the 500GB drive.

after going in i moved all the files from the 200GB drive to the new drive, and deleted all the folders from the old drive, including the Windows folder from it.

i kept restarting as i installed updates and there was no problem...everything working great.

then i realize that in my BIOS, the settings were to boot from the 200GB drive as it had been in the past. i changed that to boot from the 500GB drive (which has the windows files after all!) and i got "disk boot failure, please insert a boot disk and press enter".

if i change the boot order so the 200GB drive loads first, it goes into windows (from the 500gb drive!)... Read more

I have an excel sheet that is set up as a shared workbook. The file is used for scheduling engineers and needs to be constantly updated by multiple users.
I have set up NTFS permissions so that all the relevant members of staff can make changes and update the file as required. I have setup a separate user who has read only access. This user is for a display screen where the engineers can come and look where they are scheduled to be working. I do not want the sheet to be modified by this user.

The problem I then have is that the spreadsheet does not update automatically every 5 mins (as it is set to). If the sheet is exited and re-opened, the changes show up.

Does anyone know of a way around this?
(the engineers need a mouse to be able to scroll around the sheet)

thanks

I'm running Office 2000 under NT 4.0. This happens when I open Help, and each time I click a link, so it's very annoying. I've done a full reinstall of Office, and patched it with SR1, and it's no better.

I have re-installed this software several times with ME and never got this message before. Now I do.
I checked on Google and found some items that did not address this particular problem (upgrading to XP) but did say that one must install a qualifying product if they get this messge. I have no clue wht they are talking about. I am very confused.
I hope you can help. I am not very good with computer jargon but I can follow directions!!

A:Problem re-installing MS Office 2000 SR-1

Your version of Word 2000 is an "upgrade", and not a full install.

It will only install if there is a "qualifying product" already loaded. This means an earlier version of Word, or another package that Word 2000 will recognise as meeting the requirements of the licence.

Reinstalling it on ME probably worked because there was some "qualifying product" already installed.

It may recognise MS Works, or Wordperfect etc?
You often don't need to actually install the "qualifying product" but point it to the installation CD.

The Act! 2000 app that I have used for years and was registered when originally installed was accidentally deleted from my laptop. "This version of Act! cannot be run because it has not been properly installed or it has been damaged."

It installs each time with no glitches or error messages. My cynical quess is that Act! support, which does not last more than a few years at best, adds some coding that prevents installation after a certain # of yrs.

Problem #2: If I minimize all the spreadsheets, I normally get little bars on the bottom of the Excel program. In the case, they disappear from that document but they still show on the taskbar .

A:Excel 2000 Problem

Howdy A,

Problem #1: Whenever I try to minimize one of the spreadsheets, the top toolbar to minimize it disappears . I have to right click on the sheet on the taskbar to minimize it. Click to expand...

A little confusing. Are you saying that the Title bar for a particular workbook is missing? or disappears when you click the minimize button?

Problem #2: If I minimize all the spreadsheets, I normally get little bars on the bottom of the Excel program. In the case, they disappear from that document but they still show on the taskbar Click to expand...

It is possible to have several workbooks open in one instance of EXCEL or several open in two or more instances - depending on how you opened them and what your default is set for. For example: I can open an .XLS and then open another and then open EXCEL and open 2 more. Two will show up in one instance - two in another - but on the task bar there will be 4 buttons - one for each file. The only way of knowing that they are in separate instances is to check where they are when they are minimized.

So you need to see if this is happening. And clarify what is going on in question #1

I've downloaded data from Sharepoint Excel Services into an Excel spreadsheet.

The data ultimately comes from a DB maintained in Sharepoint.

I need to be able to enter numbers into the cells after downloading.

But when I try to enter data, I get an Excel error saying "The {name of column here} is a read-only column that cannot be modified."

The Sharepoint developer and I are both trying to find out why this happens and how to prevent and/or work around it.

I cannot unlink the data because it needs to be re-synchronized back up to the Sharepoint DB.

The Sharepoint developer is trying to find out the correct settings in Sharepoint to prevent the lockout from occurring.

(When she tries it, she *is* able to edit the data in the cells).

For my part I am approaching this from the other end to see if there is any way to unlock it once I've downloaded it into Excel.

Anyone familiar with this?

I have absolutely no experience with protecting ranges or sheets or making things read-only or not in Excel.

(When I view the data directly in Sharepoint I am able to edit the data. I obviously have the correct permissions on that end when interacting directly. It's just the downloaded version that I can't change.)

Hi

I converted a large addin from excel 2003 using DAO to access several workbooks.

Now using excel 2013.

The addin works in both Update and read-only modes. A 2nd user logging on will open the workbooks in read only mode automatically.

The conversion to 2013 went well but DAO will not work when the workbooks are opened in read-only mode. I get the error "external table is not in the expected format".

The exact same code works fine when the workbooks are opened in update mode.

Very puzzling - can anybody help?

I am really frustrated as I have a lot of users depending on the outcome. They have to continue using 2003 for the moment.

The line in the code that fails is ...

Set db = OpenDatabase(myfile, False, False, "Excel 8.0")

myfile is an .xlsx file

help very much appreciated

Welcome to TSG!
Just started using 2013 my self and was experiencing similar problem. While research mine I found this on StackOverflow concerning switching from ace.oledb to jet.oledb. You may need Jet runtime on your box.

My issue is different in that I wasn't swapping from Jet to ACE. I'm doing 2010 vs 2013. Still researching\testing mine as it seemed to work then quit working. Please post your findings.

Hi,

Windows update shield informs me I need to install Office XP SP3. I click on it, but the installation hangs up halfway through asking me to insert the Office XP CD - which I don't have.

Went to Microsoft download page and clicked on full file version (SINCE I don't have the CD), but still get the request to insert the CD halfway through the installation. Since I can't complete the download, the update icon pops up every time I log on. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

If you downloaded the full version you can re-install office using that, or you can disable automatic updates

On every new user computer that I setup (XP Pro), I install Office 2000 on the local admin account w/ run all from my computer selected in custom install screen. After install when I log in with any user name and try to open Outlook I will get an installation error. (cant remember the code) I go to add/remove programs and select the Office program listed and hit "change" button and it will show Office greyed out, like it was never installed even though I selected run all from my computer on the local installation. So I have to select run all again and then update it and it will work....sort of anyways. I will get an outlook error, "cannot find valid source" or something like that when trying to run the program.

The previous technician stated in his notes to add the Data1.msi from the install cd to the root directory and mark as a hidden file. Same with all updates, SR-1 and SP3. Even these steps have not resolved the issue.

Anyone have ideas??? I am getting very frustrated with this situation and cannot locate documentation about this issue. Input is very much appreciated. Thanks!

If this happens all the time, you need to clean up your hard drive.

Let me know if that does not help.

Installed Office professional 2010 on a new dell, installation went smooth. After the install I dragged the office icon from the start menu to create a shortcut. The shortcut that was created was not the one that had appeared on the start menu It was greyed out, etc. Clicked on it, and it said not valid. tried dragging the shortcut back to start menu, but now the grey icon replaced the original MS office icon, and it still would not run. reinstalled it, still didn't work. besides the advice you guys will give me, is there a free ms support number for this type of problem?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

First things first, lets see if Office installed correctly:

1. Click Start Orb.
2. In the search box, type winword and hit enter.

Does Word open up?

Repeat the above, but this time type excel, and hit enter.

Does Excel open up?

Golden

Greetings. I have got a problem with the office 2000 application (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access) on one of my machines here. It started by asking me to sign in at some stage. So what i did was to uninstall Office and reinstall. But when i finished installing from the CD, and opened the application; it opens the applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access) for a short time, just seconds and closes before one can even start doing his work. So what can i do about it. I need to use the applications. I don't know what happened. The applications a running so well on other machines. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,

I've encountered a problem running Word 2000 under W7 Proff 64-bit. Word runs, edits and saves ok but when I try to quit I get a popup "Microsoft Word for Windows has stopped working" (see attachment). I've tried changing the compatibility setting to various earlier versions and also let Windows look for a fix.

The odd thing is that this has only happened since a I did a clean re-install of Windows 7 (after reformatting system partition). Under my original virgin install it worked properly.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

You can try to spot errors with Event Viewer.

Open the Start Menu, and type eventvwr.msc in the search box and press enter.
If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.
In the left pane of Event Viewer, double click on Windows Logs to expand it, then right click on Application and check for errors (see screenshot). If no related errors will be in Application, please check System section.

Please post description of errors occurred within the described time.
