Computer Starts Monitor Wont Come On

Q: Computer Starts Monitor Wont Come On

I cant figure this out, my computer starts up but my monitor wont come on. I have had this problem now 3 times in 2 years. I've replaced motherboard, memory, power supplies, and changed video cards. I currently have a k-7 fsb 400 motherboard with amd sempron processor, 350 watt power supply, geforce 5200 ddr 64mb graphics card, kingston 512 ddr memory, wd cavier 7200rpm hard drive, and a dell monitor. everything starts on computer but monitor wont. yet monitor does on my friends computers. i've reseated the memory twice, tried differant hard drive, tried differant video card and power supply. still nothing. It must be the motherboard right? I just bought motherboard 4 months ago.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

Hi,
I have been using my computer for the last 3 years. The last hardware I changed on it was my graphics card about half a year ago. It was working fine earlier about 12 hours ago; due to a power outage it was off for about 8 hours. The power has since come on, but the computer will not start up properly. As the title suggests, the computer will start up (fans, lights) and the CD drive will open and close but it doesn't seem to acknowledge the monitor, mouse, or keyboard (none of them turn on at all).

So far, I have verified that it is the computer and not the monitor by testing the monitor on a different computer. I have reseated the graphics card and have tried starting up the computer with everything except the monitor unplugged. I'm at a bit of a loss because a lot of my troubleshooting options are limited by not being able to see anything on the screen.

The power outage is really the only thing that has "changed" since the computer was in perfect working condition; I have not installed any new software recently.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

OS: Windows 7 64bit
CPU: (Quad-Core)Intel Core 2 Extreme
MOTHERBOARD: (Quad-Core FSB1333) Asus P5N32-E nForce 680i SLI Chipset LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2 Mainboard
POWERSUPPLY: Thermaltake ToughPower 1,000 Watts Power Supply (about 1 year old)
VIDEO: ATI Radeon HD 5770 (just one)
MEMORY: (Req.DDR2 MainBoard)4GB (2x2GB)

A:Computer starts up, monitor does not

Hi, you can have a try with the method below:
1.Please first check your PC power, maybe the power of monitor, mouse and keyboard have some problem although the fans and lights can work. Because the power outage will sometimes lead to insufficient power supply.
2.you can replace a new Graphics card to see whether the previous card has some problem.
Hope works.
Regards.

Hey all, Im having some issues with my sisters computer. She was browsing the internet today and got blue screened (dont know what it said, I didnt witness it). So she started up her computer again, and it happened again. So now, the computer turns on BUT there is no image on the monitor. I know that the monitor connection and everything is fine, as well as the monitor works fine (tried it with another computer).

Ill provide you with what information I know, I am unable to get more because I cant access the computer.

She has a 2 year old or so HP Pavilion Slimline. It is running Windows 7 32-bit. Has a Intel Pentium dual core desktop processor and 3GB of ram.

Also, I mainly just want to be able to access the hard drive for a few minutes to back up some of her art/writing. Thats all that her and I are worried about.

Thanks if you can help me, I would appreciate it so much!

Hi all first time posting.

My question deals with a problem I encountered while trying to install a new DVD drive in my box. When I turn my computer on it goes through bios and start up, when it reaches the part were I should enter my username and password the monitor goes blank and a video message comes up that says no signal input. I am running Windows 2000 and have tried a bunch of troubleshooting but nothing seems to work.

Thanks for your help

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

My computer freezes many times when ill start it up and get to desktop. It wont take any commands after starting and ill have to shut it down by turning power off. It seems that when ill start my computer in safe mode and then ill restart and go back to normal mode it works normally. All these began after 2 latest updates.

A:Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

tuplad89, Welcome to Seven Forums. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest, starting in normal mode. Hold down the windows key(the one with the flag on it) and push the "R" key. It will bring up a dialogue box. type msconfig in the box and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except your anti virus program, you will be prompted to reboot. Do so. Reboot even if not pompted. after reboot go back and make sure everything is still unchecked. See if you notice a difference in your issue.

Next press the start button and open an elevated command prompt ( Start-type cmd in the search boz, right click the cmd entry there and select run as administrator) In that window that appears type/copy-paste sfc /scannow If you decide to type it notice the space between the SFC and the /. If it says it found no integrity issues, type exit and let us know. If it says it found problems it couldn't fix, exit and restart the computer. Do the same thing again run scannow again. reboot. Keep doing that for 3 or 4 times until you get found no integrity violations. It is scanning system files looking for corrupted or missing files and trying to replace/repair them. It may take up to 3 times with reboots in between.

Please let us know the results of those things.

This morning I turned my computer upside down on my carpet to fix a slow leak at the drain plug of my water cooled computer. I need to use some epoxy on the slight crack at the drain, so after fixing it, I left for work with the computer still upside down. (I still had water in the system and couldn't replace the plug until the epoxy hardened) When I got home from work, the computer was on it's side.
When I set it back up and booted it up, the fans work, the pumps for the water work. the mobo's lights work, the hard drives spin up, but that's is as far as it gets. No beeps, No POST screen, nothing on the monitor at all.
I cleared the CMOS, removed the battery, removed all of the RAM but 1 stick, removed the hard drives that didn't have the OS on it, removed 1 of the video cards, removed the CD and DVD drives and just went with a bare bones set up. Same thing, no beeps, POST............ect. The only thing I noticed when I set the computer back on my desk was that the speaker switch and the power LED switch were pulled out of the motherboard and the pins were slightly bent. I straightened them and plugged everything back in and still the computer runs but doesn't boot the OS. Can anyone think of anything else I should try?

A:Computer starts, no beeps, no POST, no monitor

I removed both videocards and replaced it with the card out of my 3rd computer. That didn't help, so I can rule out the videocard(s) as the problem. I removed the C:/Drive hard disk and put it into the other computer and ran Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from a floppy and after an extended test, the drive passed with NO errors. So I can rule out the hard drive as the culprit. I tested all 4 sticks of RAM with MemTest and they all passed.
So that leaves just the motherboard and the FX-60. The motherboard's LED's all light up when power is connected to it, and pressing the start button fires up the fans and water pumps like it is supposed to.
How likely is a computer tipping over 90 degrees onto a carpeted floor making the FX-60 turn into a worthless piece of silicon????

First of all, I'd just like to say that old technology hates me.

What's usually supposed to happenwhen I start an older computer that I have (2001-ish) is:
1: Fans start spinning
2: Internal speaker give out a beep
3: Monitor switches on
4: HDD starts spinning
Now when I try to turn it on, I only get 1 and 4.

This has actually been going on for a while, but it was only every second time I switched it on, then 80% of the time, but the computer never works.
Is this a problem with the motherboard?
I've tried switching RAM and GPU, as well as resetting the CMOS.

Ok, my computer gives me hard time that I have no idea what to do. Before that my computer was running fine. One day when I got back, I realize the computer was automatically turn off (usually I have it on for days).

Then I restart my computer, but whenever it comes to the moment where we can press the F8 screen, it will quickly turn to the blue screen for 1 second and then the computer will restart again.

I even try to access to safe mode and hope to have the problem fix but it does the same with restarting the computer again and again.

Now it even worse, when I turn on my computer, even the PC is running but there is nothing show on the monitor. I know there is nothing wrong with the monitor because I test the monitor with another computer and it just works fine.

Any one knows what cause the problem or how to fix this problem? This really drive me crazy as I totally have no idea how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/solutions.

My 9 year old daughter was on the kid's Compaq computer using the "Jumpstart" Web site when she says "the computer started doing something and then the monitor went dark." She thinks there was a message that said something about "internet explorer" right before the monitor went dark. I wonder if what happened was that there was a problem with internet explorer so it "turned off" OR I wonder if the computer was just restarting itself after an automatic download in order for the new stuff to take effect. I think it was highly possible that when the computer started "doing its own thing" that my daughter started clicking keys to try to stop the process not knowing what was going on.

So now here is what I am left with. The green power button on the monitor is not lit and the screen shows nothing. I can turn the computer off by pressing the power button on the tower (I hear one ding). I can turn the computer on by pressing the power button on the tower...I hear the computer power-up, I hear the usual "ta-da-ta-da" and then a few seconds later a "da-da," but the monitor does nothing. After the computer has set for awhile and is quiet, I can move the mouse and hear the computer "wake up," but still see nothing on the monitor.

Do you think my daughter pushed something that is the reason the monitor seems to be "turned off," and if so, what can I try? I understand computers very little so ... Read more

A:Solved: computer starts but no picture on monitor

Hi momathome,

It sounds more like trouble with the physical connections on the monitor, but it is possible something changed on your windows settings. Try disconnecting the monitor cable (the cable that runs from the back of the monitor to the back of the computer) and reconnect it on both ends. You can leave the computer on to see if the display comes back.

If that doesn't work, try booting the computer in Safe Mode to see if this will allow you to get the monitor to come up. Press the power button on your computer to turn it off, then turn it back on. Begin hitting the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly (don't hold it down) for about 20-30 seconds. Then press enter and give your computer a few minutes to power up.

If your monitor comes back in Safe Mode, things will look really strange. Right-click anywhere on the desktop that does not have an icon, then click on "Properties" in the menu that appears. This should open your display properties. From there, click on the Advanced tab and see what your monitor settings are. If you have more than one monitor that shows up in that window, make sure Monitor 1 is active and set as the "Primary" display. If so, click OK and try restarting the computer.

Hope this helps!

--- Russ

Monitor shuts down within 6 to 8 minute after computer starts

Desktop machine.
Windows 7 Pro. 32b.

How it happened:
After copying a folder of 1.68GB from my PC to 3 UFD's a week ago, monitor shut down by itself in a short while after the 4th UFD was inserted & the copying was in process.

The early stage of the problem:
After a restart, everything on the desktop looked normal.
Mouse & keyboard were working and could carry out simple test files and save them.
But, all USB ports & optical drive & browser were nonfunctional and the monitor shut down again in a short while.

Current situation:
1. Able to get in BIOS & change settings therein.
2. Optical drive is back to work and able to run disks.
3. I have the recover DVD & it is good (used before).
4. BUT cannot complete the recovery due to the monitor shuts down in about 5 to 8 minutes after the start of the PC.

Notes: Done the following:
1.Have another monitor connected to the PC, same problem.
2.Have RAM sticks cleaned & re-arranged, no help.
3.Have HDD tested by another PC, normal.
4.Have independent graphics card cleaned, no difference.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi all. So I have a custom computer i built a couple of years ago. Yesterday I purchased a new case fan. Before installing the new fan, I blew out the entire computer. I got everything good and proceeded to try and power up. The tower seams to come and run fine but i'm not getting anything on either of my monitors ( i've tried both on their own and still nothing ). This unit was running totally fine until I took it apart for cleaning and the fan. So far I have tried resetting the cmos, reseating the ram, and GPU, trying to boot with 1 ram. But nothing has worked, I cant get anything on my monitor. I have checked all of my connections and it should be fine. I hope we can narrow this down to the GPU so i can just replace it. If anyone could help me in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please post your system specs, To include Make and model System if Big Box, or same info for the following if custom or home built, Mother Board (including Revision number), Processor (Exact Model Number), Ram, Video Card, Hdd(s), Optical Drive(s), Original Power Supply Manufacturer Model, Wattage and Amperage on the +12V Rails, OS, and any other peripherals installed on the motherboard.

Basically what the title says. I have a new computer which I spent about 1300 dollars on. I built it myself and everything ran fine for about 6 months until I tried to overclock it. The bios and overclocking are pretty ***** proof since the motherboard is fairly new. You literally hit one button from normal to overclock. Since then when I boot the computer up the computer comes on for about 3 seconds, the monitor doesn't react at all, then it shuts itself off for another 3 seconds then boots up normally. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? I've seen some similar cases on here but they aren't exactly the same.

I recently came upon this problem. A couple months back my family purchased a new computer and monitor. I unplugged everything from the old computer and placed it in my room. The problem is that when i plugged everything in and tried turning it on the computer would power on but the monitor wouldn't. the green light would just blink.

However when i unplugged the monitor-computer connection the monitor menu would pop up and say there was no connection, so the connection is fine.

After unplugging everthing and replugging it back in in different outlets(surge protector) everythign would work fine. It would work fine for a couple more months until now. Out of the blue the same problem started occuring. However this time the monitor would power on and once the desktop appeared it would power off and the light would start blinking again.

I tried unplugging and replugging again but it only made it worse. Now the monitor wont start with the computer at all, it just blinks as soon as i turn it on.

A:Monitor wont turn on with computer

The first thing I'd troubleshoot is the monitor itself.

Do you have another computer in your house? Attach the monitor to another computer to see if it has any problems. If the monitor is not the problem, then we'll take it from there.

I moved about half a year ago and left my old dell xp desktop in the garage ever since. I just took it out to use it, But it wont show anything on the screen. I tried reseating the ram and cmos chip, and tried two 2 cords on two monitors, with flushing the remaining power by unplugging and pressing the button but no luck. Computer sounds good and i can feel my hdd running but i cannot get anything to show up on the screen. It worked before the move, any idea on what i can do to get it working?

My pc will turn on but will not display on the monitor, very rarely it will switch on like normal. Every time this happens the computer lets off a high pitch squeaking noise and the fans and components sound like they're revving. I have to keep turning it on and off by the main power button on the PC and after about 10-20 times of doing this it will just turn on properly with no weird sounds or nothing like there was nothing wrong with it. Please help me to try and figure out what the issue is and what I need to fix or repair. The squealing noise sounds as if it's coming from the main power box inside the computer. Please help, thanks.

I brought my pc back to school, and hooked it all up and it was all good. Then, when I turn it on it does not recognize my monitor or my mouse and keyboard(usb ports). I tried a different mouse and keyboard(ps3? i think that is what it's called) and had no luck. I just get a black screen and my monitor power button flashes green, it's usually solid when it's working correctly. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try to fix it?

Hi guys,

I have a problem with my HP computer. I was running Windows Vista. Im thinking it was a malware/virus problem. I downloaded some stuff and next thing you know my computer kept shutting down. I was thinking my video card over heated, too. When i took the computer apart i tried too reseat the video card. I then restarted the computer and now it doesnt boot into the motherboard screen. All it shows is just a black screen the whole time, almost as if the monitor isnt getting a signal. So im assuming its the video card.

I checked all the fans and all of them are running. I took the video card out and then I tried to start the computer with the motherboard graphics VGA port but it still doesnt boot. It just shows a black screen the whole time.

I cant get into safe mode either, I tried to hold down F8 and get no response. Is there some kind of boot up CD or a way I can switch back the graphics display to the motherboard graphics without doing it from the BIOS? because I dont think I can get into that either.

Thank you for the help and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

ps. I now bought an iMac and these computer are flawless im loving them so far! I just need to get my other computer fixed and up and running so I can sell it.

Hello,
my sister's computer didn't turn on so I decided to switch the PSU from my computer to hers in order to confirm it was a PSU problem.

indeed it was since her computer worked, but when I returned my psu and connected back all my system components, the computer turned on, heard a beep as usual, however the monitor remained in sleep and even after I turned it on it said no signal and turned to sleep again.

I checked out all the connection and maybe I missed something. I just cant find out what, any solutions to the problem?
(it may has nothing to do with the psu, but it seems connected since it all worked perfectly before today)

I just went with my friend to buy the parts for a custom computer. I built everything for him, everything powers on fine, except the monitor does not turn on/ shows a blank black screen and has the orange "sleep" button lit.

The parts in the computer are:

Motherboard - ASUS Proactive ai Series A8N-SLI Deluxe
Hard Drive - Maxtor 120 Serial ATA Hard Drive
Video Card - WinFast PX6800 GT TDH PCI Express
CPU - AMD 64 Athlon 3200

Again, everything boots fine, except the monitor stays black/off.

Also, the back of the video card does not have an VGA monitor connection. It has 2 DVI ports and comes with an adapter so that you can plug in the VGA type connection monitor into the DVI port. The video card is connected correctly in the PCI express slot and has the power cable connected to the power supply.

Here is the site for the video card:
Leadtek WinFast PX6800 GT TDH

What wattage is the power supply and are ALL of the power leads to the mobo connected correctly? If the psu is only 300watts then u will probably find its not upto running such a power hungry setup. I suggest a minimum of 450watts but bigger is better, also go for the most expensive one that u can afford as cash buys quality.
